RESUMEN

The purpose of the present study was to experimentally assess the synergistic effects of wear and corrosion on NiTi alloy in comparison with Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the most extensively used titanium alloy in biomedical applications. Both alloys were processed by an additive manufacturing laser beam directed energy deposition (LB-DED) technique, namely laser engineered net shaping (LENS), and analyzed via tribocorrosion tests by using the ball-on-plate configuration. The tests were carried out in phosphate buffered saline solution at 37 °C under open circuit potential (OCP) to simulate the body environment and temperature. The synergistic effect of wear and corrosion was found to result in an improved wear resistance in both materials. It was also observed that, for the process parameters used, the LB-DED NiTi alloy exhibits a lower tendency to corrosion as compared to the LB-DED Ti-6Al-4V alloy. It is expected that, during the service life as an implant, the NiTi alloy is less susceptible to the metallic ions release when compared with the Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

RESUMEN

The use of zirconia as an alternative biomaterial for titanium implants has been increasing due to its biocompatibility, favorable aesthetic features, less potential for early plaque accumulation and mechanical properties. Despite the developed efforts, strategies to promote an effective osseointegration are still enough. In this sense and combining the silica properties to improve bone formation with the micropatterning guidance characteristics, silica coatings with micropatterns were designed and evaluated regarding their hydrophilicity and integrity through resistance to scratch and friction tests against femoral bone plates (simulating implant insertion). A combined sol-gel and soft-lithography techniques were used to produce silica coatings onto zirconia substrates and different techniques were used to characterize the micropatterned silica coatings. The results revealed that the production of lines and pillars micropatterns increases the surface roughness (Ra values) and improves the surface strength adhesion. Through the scratch test, it was possible to verify that the integrity and topography characteristics of all micropatterned coatings were not significantly affected after the friction test meaning that their function is not compromised after implant insertion. Additionally, the lines micropattern was the one that presented the highest hydrophilicity for distilled water, thus being a promising surface to promote improved osseointegration. The combined use of different surface micropatterns could potentially be used to guide bone apposition and avoiding peri-implantitis.

RESUMEN

Recently, the production of well-defined patterned surfaces with random or regular micro and nano-features has brought new opportunities for research and development in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Among advanced micro and nano processing technologies, laser surface texturing (LST) stands out due to its simplicity, flexibility, precision, reproducibility and relatively low cost. This work studies the development of patterned surfaces controlled by of LST into biomedical grade V titanium, Ti-6Al-4V-alloy. We present different cross-hatched micropatterns followed by the characterisation of surface morphology and topography. Structural integrity of the produced patterns is evaluated by friction tests against bone, mimicking the insertion of an implant. Wettability is studied as it is crucial for protein adsorption and cell adhesion. The results show that the surface topography obtained using different patterning plans influences the wetting behaviour and the coefficient of friction against bone.

RESUMEN

PEEK is a promising polymer possessing high mechanical strength and biocompatibility and therefore it can be associated to titanium for biomedical applications. This study aimed at producing Ti6Al4V-PEEK joints with enhanced adhesion through laser-structuring Ti6Al4V treatments. Ti6Al4V cylindrical substrates were prepared by two types of surface treatments: alumina blasting and laser structuring. The holes number and size in laser-structured surfaces was varied. PEEK was then hot pressed against the metallic substrate to completely filling the surface cavities. The adhesion of the PEEK/Ti6Al4V joint was assessed by a shear bond strength test. Fracture surfaces and interfaces were investigated by SEM/EDS. Significant differences were found in the shear bond strength between alumina blasted and laser-structured samples. Bond strength improvement (exceeding 300%) was registered for the laser-structured specimens relative to grit-blasted ones. The laser-structuring technique showed to be very promising in the production of specifically designed surfaces for high strength and mechanically stable Ti6Al4V/PEEK joints.

RESUMEN

In dentistry, prosthetic structures must be able to support masticatory loads combined with a high biocompatibility and wear resistance in the presence of a corrosive environment. In order to improve the simultaneous wear and corrosion response of highly biocompatible prosthetic structures, a veneering poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) to Ti6Al4V substrate was assessed by tribocorrosion analyses under conditions mimicking the oral environment. Samples were synthesized by hot pressing the PEEK veneer onto Ti6Al4V cylinders. The tribocorrosion tests on Ti6Al4V or PEEK/Ti6Al4V samples were performed on a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer at 30N normal load, 1Hz and stroke length of 3mm. The tests were carried out in artificial saliva at 37°C. Open circuit potential (OCP) was measured before, during and after reciprocating sliding tests. The worn surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed a lower wear rate on PEEK combined with a lower coefficient of friction (COF), when compared to Ti6Al4V. In fact, PEEK protected Ti6Al4V substrate against the corrosive environment and wear avoiding the release of metallic ions to the surrounding environment.
