RESUMEN

Structural coloration has recently sparked considerable attention on the laboratory and industrial scale. Structural colors can create vivid, saturated, and long-lasting colors on metallic surfaces for optical filters, digital displays, and surface decoration. This study used an all-solution, low-cost method, free of a specific setup procedure, to fabricate structural colors of a multilayered metal-dielectric structure based on interference effects within a Fabry-Perot cavity. The insulating (dielectric) layer was produced from perhydropolysilazane, an inorganic silicon-containing polymer, from which hydrogen was liberated during conversion into silica and applied in situ to reduce metallic nanoparticles on the silica surface. This simple manufacturing technique contributes to the fabrication of large, high-quality surfaces, which could potentially be employed for surface decoration. The fabricated surfaces also exhibited excellent hydrophobic properties with contact angles up to 137°, endowing them with self-cleaning properties. In addition, the antiviral and antibacterial impact of the silver (Ag)/silica (SiO2)/stainless steel (SUS) film was also examined, as Ag has been reported to have antimicrobial and, recently, antiviral properties. According to three independently conducted antiviral assays, the fluorescence expression of virus-infected cells, PCR analysis, and modified tissue culture infectious dose assay, the film inhibited lentivirus by 75, 97, and 99% when exposed to the virus for 20 min, 1 h, and 20 min, respectively. Furthermore, the film had exceptional antibacterial activity with no colony growth observed for 24 and 12 h of inoculation. It is thus conceivable that these structural color-based films can be used to not only decorate metal surfaces with aesthetic colors but also limit virus and bacterium propagation successfully.

RESUMEN

The global demand for nucleic acid-based vaccines, including plasmid DNA (pDNA) and mRNA vaccines, needs efficient production platforms. However, conventional hosts for plasmid production have encountered challenges related to sequence integrity due to the presence of insertion sequences (ISs). In this study, we explored the potential of a genome-reduced Escherichia coli as a host for pDNA production. This strain had been constructed by removing approximately 23% of the genome which were unessential genes, including the genomic unstable elements. Moreover, the strain exhibits an elevated level of NADPH, a coenzyme known to increase plasmid production according to a mathematical model. We hypothesized that the combination of genome reduction and the abundance of NADPH would significantly enhance pDNA production capabilities. Remarkably, our results confirmed a three-fold increase in pDNA production compared to the widely employed DH5α strain. Furthermore, the genome-reduced strain exhibited heightened sensitivity to various antibiotics, bolstering its potential for large scale industrial pDNA production. These findings suggest the genome-reduced E. coli as an exciting candidate for revolutionizing the pDNA industry, offering unprecedented efficiency and productivity.

RESUMEN

Tunable structural colors have a multitude of applications in the beautification of mobile devices, in the decoration of artwork, and in the creation of color filters. In this paper, we describe a Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) design that can be used to systematically tune structural colors by altering the thickness of the top metal and intermediate insulator. Cu and Si3N4 were selected as the top metal and intermediate insulator layers, respectively, and various reflection colors were printed on Al. To protect the Cu surface from scratchiness and oxidation, a number of capping layers, including SiO2, LPSQ, PMMA, and the commercially available clear coat ProtectaClear, were applied. In addition to their ability to protect Cu from a humid environment without deteriorating color quality, ProtectaClear and LPSQ coatings have minimal angle dependency. Furthermore, a bilayer of PMMA/SiO2 can protect the Cu surface from the effects of humidity. In addition, the PMMA/SiO2 and ProtectaClear/SiO2 bilayers can also protect against corrosion on the Cu surface. The colors can be tuned by controlling the thickness of either the metal layer or intermediate insulator layer, and vivid structural colors including brown, dark orange, blue, violet, magenta, cyan, green-yellow, and yellow colors can be printed. The measured dielectric functions of Cu thin films do not provide any evidence of the plasmonic effect, and therefore, it is expected that the obtained colors are attributed to thin-film interference.

RESUMEN

In this study, heavy-metal-free orange light-emitting ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS doped-core/shell (d-C/S) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a nucleation doping strategy. To synthesize high quality d-C/S QDs with high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY), the Mn2+ concentration was optimized. The resulting ZnSe:Mn2+(5%)/ZnS d-C/S QDs showed a high PL QY of 83.3%. The optical properties of the synthesized QDs were characterized by absorption and PL spectroscopy. Their structural and compositional properties were studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. After doping Mn2+ into a ZnSe core, the ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS d-C/S QDs showed a large Stokes shift of 170 nm. The ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS d-C/S QDs were embedded in a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) polymer matrix and the ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS-based polymer film was fabricated. The fabricated ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS-PLMA film was highly transparent in the visible spectral region (transmittance > 83.8% for λ ≥ 450 nm) and it exhibited bright orange light under air mass (AM) 1.5G illumination using a solar simulator. The optical path-dependent PL measurement of the ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS-PLMA film showed no PL band shift and minimal PL decrease under variation of excitation position. These results indicate that the highly efficient and large Stokes shift-emitting ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS QDs are promising for application to luminescent solar concentrators.

RESUMEN

The need for miniaturized and high-performance devices has attracted enormous attention to the development of quantum silicon nanowires. However, the preparation of abundant quantities of silicon nanowires with the effective quantum-confined dimension remains challenging. Here, we prepare highly dense and vertically aligned sub-5 nm silicon nanowires with length/diameter aspect ratios greater than 10,000 by developing a catalyst-free chemical vapor etching process. We observe an unusual lattice reduction of up to 20% within ultra-narrow silicon nanowires and good oxidation stability in air compared to conventional silicon. Moreover, the material exhibits a direct optical bandgap of 4.16 eV and quasi-particle bandgap of 4.75 eV with the large exciton binding energy of 0.59 eV, indicating the significant phonon and electronic confinement. The results may provide an opportunity to investigate the chemistry and physics of highly confined silicon quantum nanostructures and may explore their potential uses in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, and energy systems.

RESUMEN

A super-boosted hybrid plasmonic upconversion (UC) architecture comprising a hierarchical plasmonic upconversion (HPU) film and a polymeric microlens array (MLA) film is proposed for efficient photodetection at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Plasmonic metasurfaces and Au core-satellite nanoassembly (CSNA) films can strongly induce a more effective plasmonic effect by providing numerous hot spots in an intense local electromagnetic field up to wavelengths exceeding 1550 nm. Hence, significant UC emission enhancement is realized via the amplified plasmonic coupling of an HPU film comprising an Au CSNA and UC nanoparticles. Furthermore, an MLA polymer film is synergistically coupled with the HPU film, thereby focusing the incident near-infrared light in the micrometer region, including the plasmonic nanostructure area. Consequently, the plasmonic effect super-boosted by microfocusing the incident light, significantly lowers the detectable power limit of a device, resulting in superior sensitivity and responsivity at weak excitation powers. Finally, a triple-cation perovskite-based photodetector coupled with the hybrid plasmonic UC film exhibits the excellent values of responsivity and detectivity of 9.80 A W-1 and 8.22 × 1012 Jones at a weak power density of ≈0.03 mW cm-2 , respectively, demonstrating that the device performance is enhanced by more than 104 magnitudes over a reference sample.

RESUMEN

Protopanaxadiol (PPD), an aglycon found in several dammarene-type ginsenosides, has high potency as a pharmaceutical. Nevertheless, application of these ginsenosides has been limited because of the high production cost due to the rare content of PPD in Panax ginseng and a long cultivation time (4-6 years). For the biological mass production of the PPD, de novo biosynthetic pathways for PPD were introduced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the metabolic flux toward the target molecule was restructured to avoid competition for carbon sources between native metabolic pathways and de novo biosynthetic pathways producing PPD in S. cerevisiae. Here, we report a CRISPRi (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats interference)-based customized metabolic flux system which downregulates the lanosterol (a competing metabolite of dammarenediol-II (DD-II)) synthase in S. cerevisiae. With the CRISPRi-mediated suppression of lanosterol synthase and diversion of lanosterol to DD-II and PPD in S. cerevisiae, we increased PPD production 14.4-fold in shake-flask fermentation and 5.7-fold in a long-term batch-fed fermentation.

RESUMEN

Structural colors with tunable properties have several applications in the beautification of mobile devices, surface decoration, art and color filters. Herein, we propose an asymmetric F-P cavity design to systematically tune structural colors by changing the thickness of the top metal and intermediate insulator. In this study, Cu and Si3N4 were chosen as the top metal and intermediate insulator layers, respectively, various reflection colors being realized on the Cu surface. Various capping layers-that is, SiO2, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and a commercially available clear coat named ProtectaClear-were used to protect the Cu surface from scratching and oxidation. PMMA coatings can protect Cu from corrosive environments without degradation of the color quality. The colors can be tuned by controlling the thickness of either the metal or intermediate insulator layers, and vivid structural colors-including orange, bright orange, red, purple, violet, light blue, green-yellow, and yellow-green-can be printed. The colors obtained can be attributed to thin-film interference.

RESUMEN

Plasmonic color laser printing has several advantages over pigment-based technology, including the absence of ink and toner and the production of nonfading colors. However, the current printing method requires a template that should be prepared via nanofabrication processes, making it impractical for large-area color images. In this study, we show that laser-induced dewetting of metal thin films by a nanosecond pulsed laser can be effectively utilized for plasmonic color printing. Ag, Au, and their complex films deposited on a glass substrate were dewetted into different surface structures such as droplets, rods, and ripples, depending on the incident laser energy. The resulting morphological evolutions could be explained by Rayleigh and capillary instabilities. For a bimetallic film comprising Ag nanowires coated on a Au layer, a few different plasmonic colors were generated from a single sample simply by changing the laser fluence. This provides a possible method for implementing plasmonic color laser printing without using a prepatterned template.

RESUMEN

Crystalline Mg-based alloys with a distinct reduction in hydrogen evolution were prepared through both electrochemical and microstructural engineering of the constituent phases. The addition of Zn to Mg-Ca alloy modified the corrosion potentials of two constituent phases (Mg + Mg2Ca), which prevented the formation of a galvanic circuit and achieved a comparable corrosion rate to high purity Mg. Furthermore, effective grain refinement induced by the extrusion allowed the achievement of much lower corrosion rate than high purity Mg. Animal studies confirmed the large reduction in hydrogen evolution and revealed good tissue compatibility with increased bone deposition around the newly developed Mg alloy implants. Thus, high strength Mg-Ca-Zn alloys with medically acceptable corrosion rate were developed and showed great potential for use in a new generation of biodegradable implants.

RESUMEN

The effect of microstructural modification on the degradation behavior and mechanical properties of Mg-5wt%Ca alloy was investigated to tailor the load bearing orthopedic biodegradable implant material. The eutectic Mg/Mg2Ca phase precipitated in the as-cast Mg-5wt%Ca alloy generated a well-connected network of Mg2Ca, which caused drastic corrosion due to a micro galvanic cell formed by its low corrosion potential. Breaking the network structure using an extrusion process remarkably retarded the degradation rate of the extruded Mg-5wt%Ca alloy, which demonstrates that the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of Mg alloys can be enhanced through modification of their microstructure. The results from the in vitro and in vivo study suggest that the tailored microstructure by extrusion impede the deterioration in strength that arises due to the dynamic degradation behavior in body solution.

RESUMEN

Nanoporous Pt thin films were prepared by simultaneous deposition of Pt and Si and subsequent dealloying of Si out of the Pt(x)Si(1-x) films. The x values were easily controlled in the range of 0.10 to 0.90 by the distances between the sample position and the target positions and by the plasma power for the targets. With a roughness factor of around 40, the nanoporous Pt films showed enough sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limit for glucose and interfering species. Multiple nanoporous Pt films with similar roughness factors were easily fabricated using this method, which showed good enough and similar performance to other reported glucose sensors, suggesting a simple and quality controlled manufacturing method for nanoporous Pt films as nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

RESUMEN

A condition for multiplex polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) of which outcomes sensitively indicate the actual annealing temperature of thermal cycling is reported. The multiplex reaction was designed to produce four different amplicons of 200, 300, 400, and 480 bp. However, the degree of amplification of each amplicon sensitively responds to a small change in the annealing temperature, by which one can predict the actual annealing temperature of thermal cycling. Deviations between the actual and the designated annealing temperatures as small as 0.5 degrees C were manifested by the banding patterns of the multiplex PCRs in simple agarose gel electrophoresis. For prediction of temperatures in a more objective manner, capillary electrophoresis was also applied to obtain numerical expressions of the relative intensities of the amplicons. By optimizing the multiplex PCR conditions, where concentrations of buffer, dNTPs, and primer pairs were major factors, satisfactory sensitivity and reproducibility of the band patterning were achieved. Blind tests demonstrated the accuracy of the prediction of actual annealing temperatures within +/-0.5 degrees C. The multiplex PCR approach will be further refined and tested for realization of an easily accessible alternative to a physical temperature measurement device in testing the performance of thermal cyclers for PCR.
