RESUMEN

Removal of coherent artifacts is important in the analysis of time and wavelength resolved spectroscopy data. By taking advantage of the strong correlation between spectra acquired sequentially in time, artifact removal can be formulated as a 2D problem for improved effectiveness. This paper proposes a 2D method to remove transient grating coherent artifacts from femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy data based on filtering in the Fourier domain, leading to better estimation of the material parameters from the measured data. The method is simple, intuitive, and light on computation resources. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated with experimental data acquired from a bare gold film with and without coherent artifacts using mutually parallel and perpendicular pump/probe polarizations, as well as with more complex samples (nanostructured gold film on a glass substrate and rhodamine fluorophores in solution). The proposed method is expected to be applicable to coherent artifact removal in other types of time and wavelength-resolved spectroscopy data.

RESUMEN

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing has proven to be a valuable tool in the field of surface interactions characterization, especially for biomedical applications where label-free techniques are of particular interest. In order to approach the theoretical resolution limit, most SPR-based systems have turned to either angular or spectral interrogation modes, which both offer very accurate real-time measurements, but at the expense of the 2-dimensional imaging capability, therefore decreasing the data throughput. In this article, we show numerically and experimentally how to combine the multi-spectral interrogation technique with 2D-imaging, while finding an optimum in terms of resolution, accuracy, acquisition speed and reduction in data dispersion with respect to the classical reflectivity interrogation mode. This multi-spectral interrogation methodology is based on a robust five parameter fitting of the spectral reflectivity curve which enables monitoring of the reflectivity spectral shift with a resolution of the order of ten picometers, and using only five wavelength measurements per point. In fine, such multi-spectral based plasmonic imaging system allows biomolecular interaction monitoring in a linear regime independently of variations of buffer optical index, which is illustrated on a DNA-DNA model case.

In this paper, we describe wafer-scale fabrication and characterization of plasmonic chips-containing different sizes and spacings of metallic micro- and nanoline structures-using deep UV lithography. Using a high dose (25 mJ cm( - 2)) and a proper lift-off process, feature sizes as small as 25 nm are obtained. Moreover, we study the dependence of surface plasmon resonance on the angle of incidence and wavelength for different micro- and nanoline size and spacing values, yielding localized to quasi-propagative plasmonic behaviors. Rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) techniques are employed to numerically confirm these experimental observations. Finally, the refractive index of media around the SPRI sensor chips is varied, showing the angulo-spectral regions of higher sensitivity for each type of structure.

The extended Rouard method is applied to the computation of a multi-absorbing-layer system for the optimization of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors. Specifically, the effect of the properties of a metallic layer on the shape of the reflectivity and sensitivity curve is demonstrated in the case of a Kretschmann configuration. This theoretical investigation allows us to establish the best optical properties of the metal to obtain a localized SPR, given the illuminating beam properties. Toward the development of a sensitive biosensor based on SPR, we quantify the changes in reflectivity of such an optical biosensor induced by the deposition of a nanometric biochemical film as a function of the metal film characteristics and the illumination operating conditions. The sensitivity of the system emphasizes the potential of such biophotonic technology using metallic multilayer configurations, especially with envisioned metamaterials.

RESUMEN

The wavelength dependence of the one-photon absorption-induced photodegradation rate has been measured from the visible to the near IR for a variety of electro-optic chromophore-doped polymers. Systematic behavior is identified. The lifetime of the electro-optic activity is found to increase exponentially over 4-6 orders of magnitude for wavelengths ranging from peak of absorption, typically in the visible, to ~1000 nm. Many popular chromophores developed for electro-optics over the past 10 years are compared.

RESUMEN

The near-infrared absorption of two chromophore functionalized polymers and combinations of seventeen different guest chromophores in seven different organic polymer matrices were investigated to assess the effect of chromophore structure and environment on absorption. The near-infrared absorption losses were found to be dramatically larger by as much as 2-3 orders of magnitude in polymer matrices than in solution. Furthermore, the absorption of the long-wavelength tail appears to be related to the glass transition temperature of the polymer matrix that contains the chromophore. These results are interpreted in terms of inhomogeneous broadening.

The photodegradation of the azobenzene chromophore DR1 {4-[N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]-4(?)-nitroazobenzene]} incorporated as a side chain or as a guest in a poly(methyl) methacrylate host has been evaluated as a function of wavelength, temperature, and the atmospheric environment. The effects of these variables on the lifetime of DR1-based electro-optic devices is quantified.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional quadratic spatial solitons were generated experimentally near phase-matching conditions for type II frequency doubling in KTP by the seeding of a strong second-harmonic field with a weak input at the fundamental wavelength. The self-trapped beams were shown to be insensitive to the energy, phase, and polarization of the fundamental-frequency seed input beam.

RESUMEN

It was shown experimentally for type II second-harmonic generation in KTP that the family of quadratic spatial solitons exists over a wide range of imbalances for the two fundamental wave inputs. The threshold for soliton formation was measured as a function of both phase mismatch and relative input fraction of the energy in the two fundamental polarizations. Launching unequal fundamental inputs led to an imbalanced three-coupled-field output composition.

RESUMEN

Significant improvements have been obtained for solid-state dye lasers with doped xerogels. By using longitudinal pumping with a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd: YAG laser, we obtained as much as 86% slope efficiency and 5 x 10(5) pulses lifetime. Furthermore, newly prepared deoxygenated samples exhibited even greater lifetimes.

The photostability of dye molecules trapped in transparent solid matrices synthesized by the solgel technique was studied both experimentally and theoretically using a model with numerical and approximate analytical solutions. The model is based on a one-photon photodestruction process with the creation of an absorbing bleached molecule. We give the number of photons that different trapped dye molecules can absorb on average before they are bleached. Dyes such as Perylene Red, Perylene Orange, Pyrromethenes 567 and 597, Rhodamines 6G and B, DCM, a Xanthylium salt, and Neon Red were investigated; significant differences were observed. Some dye molecules in solvents were also studied; increased stability resulted when the molecules were trapped in solid matrices.

RESUMEN

Hydrophobic photostable dye molecules such as perylenes or pyrromethenes were trapped in xerogel matrices. Using these new materials as solid-state dye lasers, we have demonstrated efficient laser operation. Slope efficiencies of up to 30% were obtained in the millijoule output-energy range. Tunabilities of up to 60 nm were observed, and more than 150,000 pulses were emitted by the same spot of a given sample when the laser was pumped at millijoule energy levels.
