RESUMEN

The agricultural professionals are ethically obligated to provide good care for the animals under their care. We analysed Brazilian agricultural science students' profiles based on their perceptions of animal welfare (AW). The survey included 239 students from agronomy, animal science, and veterinary courses in 44 universities. A factor analysis and a cluster analysis identified four students' profiles. "The farm animal stewards" group (n= 79) focused their perceptions of AW on basic health and functioning as a basis for meat, wool, egg, and dairy production, while the "the industrial view" group (n= 15), in the profitability and economic factors. "The animal rights position" (n= 76), in the face of conflicting interests (animals vs. owners), perceive that the animal's interest should prevail and give an equal treatment for all species. "The balanced" group (n= 69) incorporates concepts from animal and human to explain their perceptions. The students' perception of AW is multifaceted and influenced by value-based ideas about what is important or desirable for animals and all stakeholders. Scientific fields focusing on AW need to be emphasized within agricultural science curriculum.

RESUMEN

In the present study, aqueous extracts of Salvia africana, Salvia officinalis 'Icterina' and Savia mexicana origin were screened for their phenolic composition and for antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic properties. The three aqueous extracts contained distinct phenolic compounds, with S. africana presenting the highest total levels (231.6 ± 7.5 µg/mg). Rosmarinic acid was the dominant phenolic compound in all extracts, yet that of S. africana origin was characterized by the present of yunnaneic acid isomers, which overall accounted for about 40% of total phenolics. In turn, S. officinalis 'Icterina' extract presented glycosidic forms of apigenin, luteolin and scuttelarein, and the one obtained from S. mexicana contained several simple caffeic acid derivatives. S. africana aqueous extract exhibited high antioxidant potential in four methods, namely the DPPH• (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging ability, iron-reducing power, inhibition of ß-carotene bleaching and of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), for which EC50 values were equal or only 1.3-3.1 higher than those of the standard compounds. Moreover, this extract was able to lower the levels of nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages (EC50 = 47.8 ± 2.1 µg/mL). In addition, the three sage aqueous extracts showed promising cytotoxic effect towards hepatocellular HepG2, cervical HeLa, and breast carcinoma cells MCF-7. Overall this study highlights the potential of three little-exploited Salvia species, with commercial value for applications in food or pharmaceutical industries.

In Portugal, it is estimated that chronic pain affects 36.7% of the population, constituting a multifactorial phenomenon with great impact at individual, family, community, and social levels. In the fear-avoidance model of pain, one of the most consistent consensual in the literature, the fear arises as one of the variables that can contribute to the development and maintenance of this condition. Thus, instruments for evaluating the fear of pain, as Fear of Pain Questionnaire (FPQ-III), may be useful in the conceptualization of the subjective experience of pain. Accordingly, this paper aims to describe the adaptation of FPQ-III for the European Portuguese. A total of 1094 participants (795 women; mean age=25.16, SD=7.72) completed the web based questionnaire. The results pointed to a different factor solution found in the first study of the original scale (five factors: minor pain, severe pain, medical pain, injection pain, and afflicted pain), good internal consistency (.75-.85) and good correlations (between .30 and .59) between subscales and (between .68 and .85) for the total score and subscales. Given the need to meet the various dimensions of subjective experience of pain, the Fear of Pain Questionnaire is assumed as a useful tool, in combination with other, may contribute to the evaluation and intervention procedures progressively more comprehensive and adjusted to the challenges raised with the issue of chronic pain.

To study the effects of chilling methods and hot-boning on quality parameters of M. longissimus lumborum (LL) of Nelore steers, sixteen left-carcass sides were electrically stimulated and the LL muscles were hot-boned and chilled at -20°C (HBVFC) or 0°C (HBO). Eight control left-carcass sides were cold-boned (AT). All muscles were vacuum-packaged and aged at 0°C for 14 d. Shear force and tenderness of the AT-treated muscles were not different from HBO-treated muscles. The shear force values of the HBVFC muscles were higher after 7 and 14 d post-mortem (pm) compared to those of the AT muscles, but there was no difference from the HBO muscles. Aging did not reduce the shear force values of the HBVFC muscles. The purge losses of the HBVFC muscles were higher than those of the HBO and AT muscles. The HBVFC muscles were less tender than the HBO and AT muscles at 14 d pm.
