RESUMEN

Mineral oils (food grade white oil or liquid paraffin) have historically been safely used in a number of sensitive end-uses, including pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food. Recent concern that certain mineral hydrocarbons (branched and cyclo-alkanes) may accumulate in human tissues has prevented European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) from deriving guidance values for food exposures. Analysis of human and animal tissue indicate that an unresolved cloud of mostly highly branched alkanes and alkylated cycloalkanes within the C20-C35 range is consistently present in all tissues. This critical review thoroughly assesses the retention of "mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons" (MOSH) in human and animal tissues and evaluates if the presence of MOSH is considered adverse and appropriate to use for risk assessment, generation of guidance values for food exposure and/or generation of derivation of health-based guidance values. An adversity framework was utilized to perform an in-depth weight of the evidence analysis, and it was concluded that mere presence of MOSH does not translate to hazard identification, and is not considered adverse. In light of this conclusion, it would not be appropriate to utilize this endpoint as the point of departure to calculate a health guidance value.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Biometric information obtained from cross-sectional studies works as a mirror of individual and collective life conditions at a given moment and allows assessment of secular trends in growth. AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate growth and growth velocity for height and weight, to determine the BMI and the sexual maturation characteristics of a pre-selected urban sample of subjects from El Yopal and to compare the results with those from others countries. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 2000-2001, 1039 schoolchildren (517 girls and 522 boys) were evaluated in the age range of 6-18 years. Low, medium and high socio-economic status (SES) were determined from monthly family income. Sexual development (Tanner-Whitehouse scale) and age of menarche (status quo method) were also determined. The LMS method was used to establish biometric centiles and the general logistic model was used to establish the median age for different stages of puberty. RESULTS: Height, Girls: 155.4 cm, at 17.3 years with maximum yearly increment (myi) of 6.24 cm, at 11.10 years. Boys: 166.9 cm, at 18.0 years with myi of 6.48 cm, at 13.60 years. Weight, Girls: 52.5 kg, at 17.3 years with myi of 4.92 kg, at 11.98 years. Boys: 59.2 kg, at 18.0 years with myi of 4.88 kg, at 12.99 years. BMI at 18.0 years, Girls: 22.16 kg/m(2), Boys: 21.05 kg/m(2). Female puberty by stage of breast B2 began at 10.21 ± 1.16 years (mean ± SD). Male puberty by stage of genitalia G2 began at 11.53 ± 1.07 years. CONCLUSION: The findings show lower height values and lower weight values, except for the Cuban reference, for both sexes; an early onset of puberty in girls and a prolonged puberty in boys when compared with other Caribbean, Central and South American females and males.

RESUMEN

Intestinal resection, bypass and adaptative postoperative mechanisms developed as a consequence of that surgery, are considered good methods for improving knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology as well as possible effects that the intestine could have on the general metabolism. 50% jejunoileal bypass (BP), 50% proximal (PR) and distal (DR) intestinal resections were performed on rats to compare the influence of resected intestinal segments or bypassed loop localization could exert on different serum lipid parameters. One month after surgery significant increases in total serum cholesterol and cholesterol esters were found. There was no change in free cholesterol. A decrease in triglyceride was observed after distal and proximal resection but no changes after bypass. The cholesterol/phospholipid ratio was increased after resection and after bypass. It has been suggested that the changes in lipid metabolism produced after resections and bypass depend mainly on the loss of absorptive surface rather than on the position of the resected segment. The bypass loop may itself still exert some influence on lipoprotein metabolism, mainly on high density lipoprotein-cholesterol.

RESUMEN

We studied the effects of small-bowel resection and bypass on pancreatic function in rats subjected to a 50% distal resection (DR), a 50% proximal resection (PR), a 50% jejunal bypass (BP) or an intestinal transection (SH) (controls). Duodenal contents were collected after cannulation (under basal conditions). Afterwards, an in vivo duodenal perfusion was made using a glucose/saline solution and perfusate was collected for 1 h. Following this, a cholecystokinin (CCK) solution was injected into the jugular vein (1 U/kg body wt.) and perfusion continued for another 1 h. Basal duodenal volume only increased in rats with a PR, and no significant changes occurred in protein content. In basal conditions, no decreases in amylase, lipase, trypsin, or chymotrypsin activities after DR, PR or BP were detected. When animals were subjected to a perfusion and CCK stimulation, no significant changes occurred in animals with BP; the volume was maintained in rats with PR and DR but a decrease in protein and enzymatic contents was found. We concluded that, in basal conditions, the lack (resections) or exclusion (BP) of 50% of the small bowel does not negatively affect the digestive function. When however, a sustained activity is required, the extirpation of intestinal surface provokes a fall in enzymatic activities and is not modified if only the intestinal transit is suppressed, as occurs in the cases of BP.

RESUMEN

1. Eight hematological values were determined in blood samples from 88 raptors representing 10 species. 2. Means, standard errors, ranges and coefficients of variations were obtained for each parameter and species investigated. 3. The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) showed mean concentrations of glucose lower than those of most of the other species. 4. Concentrations of urea in the buzzard (Buteo buteo) were higher than those of the other raptors studied, and the black kite (Milvus migrans) had cholesterol values greater than the other species. 5. Blood values of individual birds of prey in good and bad states of nutrition were compared, showing significant changes in cholesterol, hematocrit, urea and total protein values.
