RESUMEN

Several organic salts based on the combination of two different choline derivative cations and MnCl3-, GdCl4- and TbCl4- as anions were immobilized in mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) by a two-step synthetic method. Firstly, MSNs were functionalized with choline derivative cations with chloride anions and then the metals were incorporated by the reaction of the chloride with the respective metal chloride salts. These nanomaterials were fully characterized by different characterization techniques such as 1H-NMR, FT-IR, elemental analysis, TEM, TGA, N2 adsorption, XRD and DLS. These characterization data were important to confirm the successful functionalization of the nanomaterials and to access their textural properties and colloidal stability. The final materials were also characterized by ICP-MS that indicated the metal contents. The cytotoxicity profile was evaluated in four different cell lines (3T3, 293T, HepG2 and Caco-2), which shows some relevant differences between the metal organic salts and their immobilized analogues.

RESUMEN

Aiming to implement an analytical methodology that is highly selective for the extraction and quantification of terbuthylazine from olive oil, we successfully achieved: (i) the development of a molecularly imprinted polymer by bulk polymerization using terbuthylazine as template molecule, methacrylic acid as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker, and dichloromethane as porogen; (ii) characterization of the imprinting material using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, and scanning electron microscopy; (iii) their molecular recognition for the template molecule using high-performance liquid chromatography, and (iv) optimization of a solid-phase extraction procedure using as sorbent the synthesized molecularly imprinted polymer for the selective extraction and clean-up of terbuthylazine from spiked organic olive oil and further quantification of the pesticide levels by high-performance liquid chromatography. The suitability of the implemented analytical methodology was demonstrated, as concentrations of terbuthylazine below the tolerated maximum residue limits in the spiked organic olive oil samples could be satisfactorily analyzed with good precision/accuracy with high recovery rates (96%). Overall, the implemented methodology has proven to be reliable and robust and is highly promising in the field of sample preparation, particularly for the isolation/preconcentration of terbuthylazine in complex food samples.

RESUMEN

In this work, we compare experimental results to molecular simulation results of volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption on nonporous silica. We adopted an effective model for the rough solid surface, obtained by a temperature annealing scheme, plus an experimental/simulation nitrogen adsorption tuning process over the silica energetic oxygen parameter. The measurement/prediction of selected VOCs, specifically, n-pentane and methylcyclohexane, is presented in terms of adsorption isotherms, with an emphasis on the angle distribution analysis of the three studied probe molecules with respect to the same modeled surface.

RESUMEN

In this work a novel biomass precursor for the production of activated carbons (AC) was studied. The lignocellulosic material used as precursor is the coffee bean endocarp, which constitutes an industrial residue from the Portuguese coffee industry. Activation by carbon dioxide and potassium hydroxide produces activated carbons with small external areas and pore volumes up to 0.22 and 0.43cm3g(-1), respectively, for CO2 and KOH activation. All the AC's produced are very basic in nature with point of zero charge higher than 8. SEM/EDX studies indicate the presence of K, O, Ca and Si. By FTIR it was possible to identify the formation on the AC's surface of several functional groups, namely phenol, alcohol, quinone, lactone, pyrone and ether as well as SiH groups. The tailoring of the porous and chemical structure of the activated carbons produced is possible by selecting the appropriate production conditions.

RESUMEN

Universal mechanisms of adsorption and capillary condensation of toluene and nitrogen on ordered MCM-41 and PHTS materials are studied by means of high-resolution experiments and Monte Carlo molecular simulations. A molecular simulation model of toluene adsorption in silica nanopores, which accounts for surface heterogeneity, and a hybrid molecular-macsroscopic method for pore size distribution (PSD) calculations have been developed. For a range of reference materials, the PSD results obtained from toluene isotherms are consistent with the results of nitrogen adsorption using the nonlocal density functional theory method.
