INTRODUCTION: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a frequent condition affecting approximately 2% of the population. Medical treatment consists long-term use of intranasal corticosteroids and short-term use of oral corticosteroids, in adjunct with saline solution rinses. Surgical management is proposed in patients who failed after medical treatment. In France, two biologics are reimbursed in case of severe uncontrolled CRSwNP despite medical treatment and endoscopic sinus surgery. Waiting for head-to-head biologics comparison, studies should report the efficacy and safety of biologics in large real-life cohorts. This study protocol describes the aims and methods of a prospective, observational, national, multicentric cohort of patients with CRSwNP treated with biologics. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The BIOlogics in severe nasal POlyposis SurvEy is a French multicentre prospective observational cohort study. The main aim is to assess the efficacy and tolerance of biologics in patients with CRSwNP, with or without association with other type 2 diseases, and to determine the strategies in case of uncontrolled disease under biologics. Patients over 18 years old requiring biologics for CRSwNP in accordance with its marketing approval in France (ie, severe nasal polyposis, with lack of control under nasal corticosteroid, systemic corticosteroids and surgery) are invited to participate. Collected data include topical history of surgical procedures and biologics, medication and use of systemic corticosteroids, visual analogical scales for specific symptoms, Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 questionnaire, nasal polyp score, asthma control test, Lund-Mackay score on CT scan and IgE concentration and eosinophilic count on blood sample. BACKGROUND: Among all studies describing COVID-19 clinical features during the first wave of the pandemic, only a few retrospective studies have assessed the correlation between olfac-tory dysfunction (OD) and the evolution of disease severity. The main aim was to assess whether OD is a predictive factor of COVID-19 severity based on the patient's medical management (outpa-tient care, standard hospital admission, and ICU admission). METHODS: A national, prospective, mul-ticenter cohort study was conducted in 20 public hospitals and a public center for COVID-19 screen-ing. During the first wave of the pandemic, from 6 April to 11 May 2020, all patients tested positive for COVID-19 confirmed by RT-PCR underwent two follow-up ENT consultations within 10 days of symptom onset. The main outcome measures were the evolution of medical management (out-patient care, standard hospital admission, and ICU admission) at diagnosis and along the clinical course of COVID-19 disease. RESULTS: Among 481 patients included, the prevalence of OD was 60.7%, and it affected mostly female patients (74.3%) under 65 years old (92.5%), with fewer comor-bidities than patients with normal olfactory function. Here, 99.3% (290/292) of patients with OD presented with non-severe COVID-19 disease. Patients reporting OD were significantly less hospi-talized than the ones managed as outpatients, in either a standard medical unit or an ICU. Conclu-sions: As regards the clinical course of COVID-19 disease, OD could predict a decreased risk of hospitalization during the first wave of the pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Patulous Eustachian tube (PET) is a condition affecting approximately 0.3% to 6.6% of the population, with autophony being the predominant complain. The management of PET lacks a well-defined standard in the literature as no effective medical treatments have been documented but various surgical options are available. This study aims to report mid-term outcomes following surgical management of PET. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients who underwent surgical intervention for PET between September 2017 and June 2022 were enrolled. Data encompassing general demographics, quality of life (GBI), and procedure-specific data were collected. RESULTS: A total of 30 PET cases (in 19 patients) underwent surgical intervention including 9 injections of hyaluronic acid, 13 fat injections, 6 endoscopic shim insertions, 1 cartilage graft, and 1 injection of hydroxy apatite. After an average follow-up of 22 ± 14 months, 16 cases (53%) achieved complete symptom relief, while 8 cases (26.6%) reported partial relief. Additionally, 11(36%) cases required multiple surgeries. No specific surgical technique demonstrated superiority. Quality of life improved in 77% of cases based on 10 out of 13 GBI collected. Recurrence of PET symptoms occurred on average 10.6 ± 9.7 months after initial surgery, with an estimated global risk of 75% at 3 years. Transient serous otitis media was observed in only 4 cases (13.3%). CONCLUSION: Surgical intervention for PET was found to be effective, achieving complete symptom relief in 53% of cases and significantly improving quality of life 2 years post-surgery. However, a substantial portion of cases necessitated one or more re-interventions. The durability of effectiveness appears to diminish over time.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent dysosmia more than 3 months after SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) is considered as long-COVID olfactory disease (LCOD). The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic management of LCOD in the daily clinical practice of members of the National Union of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Specialists (Syndicat national des médecins spécialisés en ORL et chirurgie cervico-faciale) (SNORL). The secondary objective was to identify factors influencing management within the descriptive survey data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was designed (GoogleForm®) and e-mailed to all 715 SNORL members in January 2022. RESULTS: The response rate was 7.4% (n=53/715). In total, 94.3% of respondents (n=50) had managed LCOD cases, and 56% (n=28) used psychophysical olfactory tests. Specific olfactory medical therapy involved local corticosteroid nasal sprays in 49.1% of cases (n=26) and oral corticosteroids in 32.1% (n=17). Olfactory self-training was prescribed by 81.1% of respondents, with associated speech pathologist therapy in 15.1% (n=8) of cases. No predictive factors for specific management were identified. CONCLUSION: Olfactometry is currently under-applied. Consistent with guidelines, non-drug therapy (olfactory training) is the first-line treatment for LCOD.

OBJECTIVE: Indeterminate thyroid nodules (ITN) are common and often lead to (sometimes unnecessary) diagnostic surgery. We aimed to evaluate the performance of two machine learning methods (ML), based on routinely available features to predict the risk of malignancy (RM) of ITN. DESIGN: Multi-centric diagnostic retrospective cohort study conducted between 2010 and 2020. METHODS: Adult patients who underwent surgery for at least one Bethesda III-V thyroid nodule (TN) with fully available medical records were included. Of the 7917 records reviewed, eligibility criteria were met in 1288 patients with 1335 TN. Patients were divided into training (940 TN) and validation cohort (395 TN). The diagnostic performance of a multivariate logistic regression model (LR) and its nomogram, and a random forest model (RF) in predicting the nature and RM of a TN were evaluated. All available clinical, biological, ultrasound, and cytological data of the patients were collected and used to construct the two algorithms. RESULTS: There were 253 (19%), 693 (52%), and 389 (29%) TN classified as Bethesda III, IV, and V, respectively, with an overall RM of 35%. Both cohorts were well-balanced for baseline characteristics. Both models were validated on the validation cohort, with performances in terms of specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 90%, 57.3%, 73.4%, 81.4%, 84% (CI95%: 78.5%-89.5%) for the LR model, and 87.6%, 54.7%, 68.1%, 80%, 82.6% (CI95%: 77.4%-87.9%) for the RF model, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our ML models performed well in predicting the nature of Bethesda III-V TN. In addition, our freely available online nomogram helped to refine the RM, identifying low-risk TN that may benefit from surveillance in up to a third of ITN, and thus may reduce the number of unnecessary surgeries.

(1) Background: Persistent post-viral olfactory disorders (PPVOD) are estimated at 30% of patients one year after COVID-19 infection. No treatment is, to date, significantly effective on PPVOD with the exception of olfactory training (OT). The main objective of this work was to evaluate OT efficiency on post-COVID-19 PPVOD. (2) Methods: Consecutive patients consulting to the ENT department with post-COVID-19 PPVOD were included after completing clinical examination, the complete Sniffin' Stick Test (TDI), the short version of the Questionnaire of olfactory disorders and the SF-36. Patients were trained to practice a self-olfactory training with a dedicated olfactory training kit twice a day for 6 months before returning to undergo the same assessments. (3) Results: Forty-three patients were included and performed 3.5 months of OT in average. We observed a significant TDI score improvement, increasing from 24.7 (±8.9) before the OT to 30.9 (±9.8) (p < 0.001). Based on normative data, a significant increase in the number of normosmic participants was observed only for the threshold values (p < 0.001). Specific and general olfaction-related quality of life improved after the OT. (4) Conclusions: Olfactory function appeared to improve only in peripheral aspects of post-COVID-19 PPVOD after OT. Future controlled studies must be performed to confirm the OT role and justify new therapeutic strategies that may focus on the central aspects of post-COVID-19 PPVOD.

Background: One of the main symptoms of COVID-19 is hyposmia or even anosmia. Olfactory identification is most often affected. In addition, some cognitive disorders tend to appear following the infection, particularly regarding executive functions, attention, and memory. Olfaction, and especially olfactory identification, is related to semantic memory which manages general knowledge about the world. The main objective of this study was to determine whether semantic memory is impaired in case of persistent post COVID-19 olfactory disorders. Methods: 84 patients (average age of 42.8 ± 13.6 years) with post COVID-19 olfactory loss were included after consulting to the ENT department. The clinical evaluation was carried out with the Pyramid and Palm Tree Test, the word-retrieval task from the Grémots, the Sniffin' Sticks Test and the Computerised Olfactory Test for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease. Results: Semantic memory was impaired in 20% (n = 17) of patients, especially in the 19-39 age-group. The olfactory threshold was only significantly correlated with the semantic memory scores. Conclusions: Similar to all cognitive disorders, semantic disorders can have a negative impact on quality of life if left untreated. It is essential to carry out specific assessments of post COVID-19 patients to accurately determine their disorders and to put in place the best possible rehabilitation, such as speech and language therapy, to avoid quality-of-life impairment.

BACKGROUND: Nasal valve disorders frequently give rise to nasal obstruction. Dermal fillers could be used in the internal valve area to generate valve widening. The goal of this study was to report our "liquid spreader" procedure consisting in the injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) at the internal nasal valve in patients complaining of nasal obstruction. METHODS: The procedure described in this paper is suitable for patients with unilateral or bilateral nasal obstruction related to architectural features resulting in narrowing of the internal nasal valve. HA is injected along the internal valve from a single entry point located at the anterior part of the internal valve, thus creating a volume which will induce nasal valve widening. Rhinomanometries and visual analog scales (VAS) regarding nasal obstruction were collected before and after the procedure. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were enrolled (7 females). Mean age was 44 years (min=24 y-o, max=65 y-o). Thirteen presented nasal valve narrowing without septal deviation while 3 patients had high septal deviation. Before injection, mean nasal resistances were 3.4±5.6 sPa/mL (min=0.55, max=19.8). One month after injection, mean nasal resistances were 0.38±0.26 sPa/mL (min = 0.20, max = 0.85). The difference was statistically significant (p=0.049). VAS scores were improved with a trend back to baseline after 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: The liquid spreader is a useful procedure that can be combined with non-surgical esthetic rhinoplasties. SUMMARY: Nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedures are not without risks: although rare, intravascular injections of hyaluronic acid can lead to serious complications. Very few authors have reported using cannulas for filler injection in the nose. The purpose of this article is to describe how the authors perform nonsurgical rhinoplasty using a single entry point and cannulas, significantly reducing vascular and infection risks. The procedure described in this article can be applied to all indications of nonsurgical rhinoplasty. The key point of the authors' procedure is the definition of a single, medial entry point. Using a 5-cm, 25-gauge, dome-shaped cannula, all nasal regions can be reached, from the anterior nasal spine to the nasion. The authors' nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedure using cannulas reduces complications and provides results similar to those achieved with needles.

Gummy smile has traditionally been treated with invasive or demanding surgical and orthodontic techniques. Several studies have shown that targeted injection of the upper lip elevator muscles with botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for this condition. However, no standardized injection protocol with reproducible results has yet been published. A systematic review of the literature has been performed using Medline, Scopus, and Embase. All articles relevant to the research question were analyzed. After removing duplicates, 162 articles were selected, of which 9 were included in the analysis after applying exclusion and inclusion criteria, for a total of 269 patients. Onabotulinum toxin type A (ONA-BoNTA) was used in 7 studies and abobotulinum toxin type A (ABO- BoNTA) in 2 studies, at various dilutions. The number of sites injected varied from 1 to 3 per side, with variable targeting of the Levator labii superioris alaeque nasalis, Levator labii superioris, Zygomaticus minor, Zygomaticus major and Orbicularis oris. The dose used per side varied from 1.25 to 6 U of ONA-BoNTA and from 2.5 to 7.5 U of ABO- BoNTA. The injection protocol was tailored to the type of gingival smile in one study only, another study compared results of targeting two different muscles, and one study evaluated different dosages of toxin for the same injection site. The average improvement ranged from 24.85% to 99.65% and the effect persisted from 12 to 36 weeks. Very good patient satisfaction was reported in 6 studies. Fourteen adverse events were reported, all of them mild and transient. The treatment of gummy smile by botulinum toxin injection is effective, safe, rapid, minimally invasive and reversible. Protocols vary widely in the literature and no standardized procedure emerges. A patient-specific approach, adapted to their anatomy, type of gummy smile and the severity of the exposure seems to be the most appropriate. Randomized controlled studies are needed to make this approach more systematic.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID-19 Olfactory impairment has a negative impact on quality of life. The Sniffin Sticks test 12 items (SST-12) can be used in quick olfactory disorders screening. Its evaluation in a post-covid-19 situation was the main objective of this work. METHODS: All patient impaired with a post-COVID olfactory loss were included while consulting to the ENT department. The clinical examination included an olfaction recovery self-assessment (VAS), a nasofibroscopy, a quality of life (QoL) assessment, the complete Sniffin' Sticks Test (SST), and the SST-12. RESULTS: Among the 54 patients included, 92% (n = 50) were correctly screened as olfactory impaired by SST-12. We report excellent correlations between SST-12 and SST (rho (52) = 0.98, p < 0.001), QoL(rho(52) = 0.33 p = 0.016), or VAS (rho(52) = 0.49, p < 0.001) assessments. CONCLUSIONS: SST-12 is a quick and reliable tool to screen large-scale population of post-COVID-19 olfactory impaired patients and could be used in a general daily clinical practice.

RESUMEN El síndrome de Down con frecuencia se acompaña de defectos bucodentales que comprometen la función masticatoria y fonatoria del paciente. Las acciones de prevención y promoción de salud bucal, el diagnóstico precoz y seguimiento de estas enfermedades, contribuyen al logro del verdadero enfoque interdisciplinario que demandan estos pacientes, para lograr una plena inclusión social. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica sobre el tema, con el objetivo de estructurar los referentes teóricos relacionados con los principales defectos bucodentales -congénitos y adquiridos- que afectan a la población con síndrome de Down, para lograr la prevención de estos defectos y el incremento de la calidad de vida de los pacientes. Los defectos bucodentales congénitos más frecuentes encontrados en la trisomía 21, fueron la microdoncia, la macroglosia y la erupción dental tardía. La enfermedad periodontal fue el defecto adquirido de mayor presentación, al que se asocian diversos factores de riesgo, muchos modificables. Las intervenciones tempranas en salud bucal pueden incrementar la calidad de vida de los niños y adultos que padecen este trastorno, ayudándolos a lograr un pleno desarrollo como seres humanos (AU).


ABSTRACT Down's syndrome is frequently accompanied by oral-dental defects compromising the masticatory and phonatory function of the patients. Oral health promotion and prevention actions, precocious diagnosis and follow-up of these diseases contribute to achieving the true interdisciplinary approach these patients demand to reach their full social inclusion. A bibliographic search on the theme was carried out, with the objective of structuring the theoretical referents related to the main oral-dental defects -congenital and acquired-, affecting the population with Down's syndrome to reach these defects prevention and increasing these patients' life quality. The congenital oral-dental defects more commonly found in trisomy 21 were microdontia, macroglossia, and delayed tooth eruption. Periodontal disease was more frequently found acquired defect, to which several risk factors are associated, many of them modifiable. Early interventions in oral health may improve the life quality of these children and adults, helping them to achieve a full development as human beings (AU).

Several subsets of dendritic cells (DCs) are present in the oropharyngeal tonsillar tissues and are thought to behave as major actors in development and regulation of immunity by acting as a first line of recognition for airborne and alimentary antigens. We previously discovered in human adult tonsils infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a subset of DCs that expressed langerin/CD207, a lectin usually recognized as a hallmark of epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs). In the present study, we analyzed the content of several child and adult tonsils in order to characterize in more detail the phenotype of these tonsillar CD207-expressing DCs (tCD207 DCs) and to compare it with that of other human DC subsets. We showed that all the human tonsils studied (n = 12) contained significant proportions of tCD207 DCs among tonsillar cells expressing HLA-DR. Moreover, the presence of tCD207 DCs in tonsils from young children free of EBV infection indicated that these cells could be established early in the tonsil independently of EBV infection. We also showed that tCD207 DCs, that were found mainly located within the tonsillar lymphoid stroma, were distinguishable from LCs by the level of expression of CD1a and EpCAM, and also from human inflammatory DCs by the lack of CD1a, CD206, and CD14 expression. Detailed analysis of cell surface DC markers showed that tCD207 DCs were unrelated to CD141(+) DCs or macrophages, but defined a subtype of tonsillar DCs closely related to myeloid resident CD1c DCs. Since it was established that blood CD1c myeloid DCs exhibit plasticity and are capable of expressing CD207 notably in the presence of inflammatory cytokines, it is tempting to speculate that CD207(+) CD1c(+) DCs may play a specific immune role.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out a systematic review of scientific evidence available about necrotizing otitis externa, emphasizing epidemiologic data, diagnosis criteria, treatment protocols, follow-up criteria, prognosis factors, and chronologic evolution. DATA SOURCES: PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for publications in English and French languages, between 1968 and October 1, 2011. STUDY SELECTION: We included publications of all types including at least 6 cases. We excluded publications focused on cranial base osteomyelitis not originating from the external ear and publications limited to a specific population. DATA EXTRACTION: We assessed publication quality according to international guidelines. DATA SYNTHESIS: For each publication, data were entered in a spreadsheet software for analysis. We excluded individual data already published in other studies or reviews. CONCLUSION: Our review revealed the absence of strong scientific evidence regarding diagnosis criteria, treatment protocols and follow-up criteria. This implies the use of highly empirical indexes of suspicion in clinical practice. Our review confirmed the existence of a typical but not exclusive population at risk (aged, male, and diabetic patient) and also revealed major issues: lack of primary prevention in population at risk, delays before referral and management, bacteriologic issues caused by antibiotic misuse (agent identification problems, rise of resistant strains), persistence of recurrent cases. A better diffusion of medical information should help improve the management of this severe disease.

The advent of targeted therapies and personalized medicine in oncology has led in France to the settlement and organisation of a network of hospital molecular genetic platforms under the impetus of the National Cancer Institute (INCa). These platforms are, according to the concerned sites, integrated or not in pathology laboratories. The development of molecular biology methods, the choice of the procedures, the establishment of sample workflow, the quality control and the selection of the genomic alterations to be detected on each platform, have been left to the discretion of the different laboratories. Based on calls for project made by the INCa, hospital molecular genetic platforms were able to adapt their activity according to the assigned budgets. While the presence of some genomic alterations (i.e. KRAS gene mutations in metastatic colon adenocarcinoma or EGFR gene mutations in lung adenocarcinomas), may lead to administration of targeted therapies under the Marketing Authorization Application (MAA), others are associated with therapeutic clinical trials. However, increasing number of MAA for new molecules targeting genomic alterations is likely in the near future. In this context, it is necessary to quickly adapt the organisation of work of the hospital pathology laboratories performing molecular biology tests in order to meet the growing demand of oncologists in the field of targeted therapies. The purpose of this article is to describe the different steps of the settlement of a molecular genetic platform in an academic pathology laboratory (LPCE, CHU de Nice) and to show the experience of this laboratory specifically oriented on the support of the morphological and molecular diagnosis of lung cancer, thyroid cancer and malignant melanoma.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of radiation therapy in rare salivary gland pediatric mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC). STUDY DESIGN: A French multicenter retrospective study (level of evidence 4) of children/adolescents treated for MEC between 1980 and 2010 was conducted. RESULTS: Median age of the 38 patients was 14 years. Parotid subsite, low-grade, and early primary stage tumors were encountered in 81%, 82%, and 68% of cases, respectively. All except 1 patient were treated by tumoral surgical excision, and 53% by neck dissection (80% of high grades). Postoperative radiation therapy and chemotherapy were performed in 29% and 11% of cases. With a median 62-month follow-up, overall survival and local control rates were 95% and 84%, respectively. There was 1 nodal relapse. Lower grade and early stage tumors had better survival. Postoperative radiation therapy and chemotherapy were associated with similar local rates. Patients with or without prior cancer had similar outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric salivary gland MEC carries a good prognosis. Low-intermediate grade, early-stage tumors should be treated with surgery alone. Neck dissection should be performed in high-grade tumors. Radiation therapy should be proposed for high grade and/or advanced primary stage MEC. For high-grade tumors without massive neck involvement, irradiation volumes may be limited to the primary area, given the risk of long-term side effects of radiation therapy in children. Pediatric MEC as second cancers retain a similar prognosis. Long-term follow-up is needed to assess late side effects and second cancers.

Epithelial cell contribution to the natural history of childhood allergic respiratory disease remains poorly understood. Our aims were to identify epithelial pathways that are dysregulated in different phenotypes of respiratory allergy. We established gene expression signatures of nasal brushings from children with dust mite-allergic rhinitis, associated or not associated with controlled or uncontrolled asthma. Supervised learning and unsupervised clustering were used to predict the different subgroups of patients and define altered signalling pathways. These profiles were compared with those of primary cultures of human nasal epithelial cells stimulated with either interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, interferon (IFN)-α, IFN-ß or IFN-γ, or during in vitro differentiation. A supervised method discriminated children with allergic rhinitis from healthy controls (prediction accuracy 91%), based on 61 transcripts, including 21 T-helper cell (Th) type 2-responsive genes. This method was then applied to predict children with controlled or uncontrolled asthma (prediction accuracy 75%), based on 41 transcripts: nine of them, which were down-regulated in uncontrolled asthma, are directly linked to IFN. This group also included GSDML, which is genetically associated with asthma. Our data revealed a Th2-driven epithelial phenotype common to all children with dust mite allergic rhinitis. It highlights the influence of epithelially expressed molecules on the control of asthma, in association with atopy and impaired viral response.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess compliance with fluoride gel custom trays in irradiated head and neck cancer patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: One hundred fifty-five consecutive patients on remission following radiation therapy of head and neck cancers were assessed retrospectively for dental care practices prior to radiation and prospectively for long-term compliance with custom trays from November 2009 to January 2010. A five-item questionnaire was filled in by patients in the waiting room, and a 15-item questionnaire by the physician in charge during the corresponding follow-up visit. RESULTS: Ten percent of patients were edentulous at inclusion. Among dentate patients, 17% had total extractions. With a mean follow-up of 24 months, 19% of patients used custom trays for over a year. Primary stage, age, and tobacco consumption were correlated with compliance with custom trays. More than half of dentate patients developed carious lesions, and 8% had stage 1-3 osteoradionecrosis of the whole population of edentulous and dentate patients. CONCLUSION: Compliance with custom trays was poor in this series. Specific postirradiation dental care follow-up visits and education have demonstrated their utility in the era of 2D irradiation. We currently advocate an 18-month compliance with custom trays in IMRT patients on the basis of the Parsport trial, after which we assess the quality of salivary recovery before recommending prolonged use or interruption. Data with innovative irradiation techniques are however required.

PURPOSE: To propose an automatic atlas-based segmentation framework of the dental structures, called Dentalmaps, and to assess its accuracy and relevance to guide dental care in the context of intensity-modulated radiotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multi-atlas-based segmentation, less sensitive to artifacts than previously published head-and-neck segmentation methods, was used. The manual segmentations of a 21-patient database were first deformed onto the query using nonlinear registrations with the training images and then fused to estimate the consensus segmentation of the query. RESULTS: The framework was evaluated with a leave-one-out protocol. The maximum doses estimated using manual contours were considered as ground truth and compared with the maximum doses estimated using automatic contours. The dose estimation error was within 2-Gy accuracy in 75% of cases (with a median of 0.9 Gy), whereas it was within 2-Gy accuracy in 30% of cases only with the visual estimation method without any contour, which is the routine practice procedure. CONCLUSIONS: Dose estimates using this framework were more accurate than visual estimates without dental contour. Dentalmaps represents a useful documentation and communication tool between radiation oncologists and dentists in routine practice. Prospective multicenter assessment is underway on patients extrinsic to the database.

Salivary gland tumors in children are rare: they correspond to 8-10% of head and neck pediatric tumors. Clinicians of all disciplines should be aware of this diagnosis in front of non-inflammatory mass of the parotid or in the territory of other salivary glands. In children, 50% of salivary gland tumors are malignant which contrasts with a 10-25% risk in adults. Epithelial tumors are the most common, mucoepidermoïd carcinomas of the parotid in particular. Surgery is the treatment of choice in epithelial tumors. Adjuvant radiotherapy may be indicated in case of unfavorable prognostic factors but must be balanced with the risk of radiation-induced growth defects and secondary cancer. The role of chemotherapy is limited in these tumors, but should be discussed in case of an inoperable or metastatic lesion.
