RESUMEN

This study performed a serological assay to assess the exposure of free-ranging cougars (Puma concolor) to four selected infectious agents, including Toxoplasma gondii, Leptospira spp., the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and the feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Serum samples were collected from 27 free-ranging cougars along the Tietê River Basin, in the central region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The presence of antibodies against T. gondii was detected in 59.3% (16/27) of the serum samples through the modified agglutination test (MAT-t), which was the most prevalent agent. The microscopic agglutination technique (MAT-1) was used to investigate the occurrence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies, showing that 11.1% (3/27) of the sampled cougars were seropositive. The only serovar detected was Djasiman (L. interrogans). A commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) licensed for use in domestic felines was used to investigate the occurrence of retroviruses. The ELISA test kits detected a prevalence of 11.1% (3/27) of FIV antibodies, while none of the samples tested showed any evidence of FeLV antigen. These results suggest that free-ranging cougars are exposed to potentially pathogenic agents. This study presented the first recorded occurrence of the serovar Djasiman in P. concolor.

Abstract Introduction: the study of death involves the exploration in the search of oneself. Medicine tends to deny death and control it through technological advances and medicalization, leading to the thought that the doctor can regulate the duration of the process. Death is full of symbolic meanings and it is an important part of the human development process, often unknown by the medical students, which makes them fearful for not knowing when this meeting is going to happen. It is inherent to the doctor's activities, believing it can be always avoided, being understood as a failure or unsuccessful treatment, or lack of knowledge by the professional, generating anxiety and demands, by the population and the doctors themselves. This research aims to report the experience and perception of death among medical students. Methods: it is a qualitative, observational study carried out with 50 students from three different semesters from a School of Medicine in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, in 2018. It was applied an instrument with an open question: After the experience of death during the course, what has changed in your performance as a student and in your life? The data was analyzed manually during four steps. The first phase consisted of organizing the data, looking for ideas that emerged from the answers to the guiding question, when the pre-analysis was carried out, through a deep reading aiming to define categories, since they had not been previously created; the second phase corresponded to the preparation of the second worksheet that stored the explicit and implicit ideas, the former being the temporary categories and the latter being the focus along with identification of the senses; the third phase sought to answer the study question through the record units, associating the speech to the focus/theme, identifying the sense of inference; the fourth phase was based on two spreadsheets, the first one with the interpretation of the main topics and their record units, and the second one with the creation of the synthesis for each focus. The experience of death may occur in relation to the other or to death itself, with differences between them. This research focus on the death of others and how undergraduate medical students experience it during the course, of which data resulted in three categories related to the experience of death during medical school, reflecting their capacity or not to deal with the phenomenon. Results: the three categories showed two subcategories, as follows: Acceptance of death, with subcategories in personal and professional life; Professional qualification with two subcategories: limits of professional performance and of the course in relation to death. The last category was Humanization, with two more subcategories: medical-patient relationship and palliative care. Conclusion: the research showed that the students modified their views about death during the course, and that they are aware of the topic, disclosing the value of this subject and also the need to discuss it during undergraduate school.

Prenatal care stands out as an essential factor in the protection and prevention of adverse events on the health of the mother and child, allowing the identification and clinical management of timely interventions on potential risk factors for health complications. Our article aims at describing and comparing the main characteristics of prenatal care in 1997 and 2006 in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A population-based, observational, cross-sectional, study was conducted using secondary data from 1997 and 2007 extracted from the State Research on Health and Research Databases (II and III). In 2006, prenatal was considered satisfactory if it met the three minimum recommendations of the Ministry of Health: starting prenatal care until the 16th week of pregnancy, provisioning of six or more consultations, and offering guidance on the reasons and practice of breastfeeding. Prenatal care increased significantly in 2006 (17.1%) compared to 1997. Prenatal care in 2006 was more satisfying for women that were 20 to 35 years old (60.7%), white (60.0%); with greater schooling (71.8%), income equal to or greater than minimum wage (75.8%), with two to three children (63.1%), and that resided in the Recife Metropolitan Region (68.3%). Prenatal care was less satisfying for women that worked (54.7%) and from the rural area (49.1%, p < 0.001). Despite the expansion of prenatal coverage, improving its quality is essential to promote holistic health, especially in poor communities, where risk factors are prevalent.

Our understanding of mammal ecology has always been hindered by the difficulties of observing species in closed tropical forests. Camera trapping has become a major advance for monitoring terrestrial mammals in biodiversity rich ecosystems. Here we compiled one of the largest datasets of inventories of terrestrial mammal communities for the Neotropical region based on camera trapping studies. The dataset comprises 170 surveys of medium to large terrestrial mammals using camera traps conducted in 144 areas by 74 studies, covering six vegetation types of tropical and subtropical Atlantic Forest of South America (Brazil and Argentina), and present data on species composition and richness. The complete dataset comprises 53,438 independent records of 83 species of mammals, includes 10 species of marsupials, 15 rodents, 20 carnivores, eight ungulates and six armadillos. Species richness averaged 13 species (±6.07 SD) per site. Only six species occurred in more than 50% of the sites: the domestic dog Canis familiaris, crab-eating fox Cerdocyon thous, tayra Eira barbara, south American coati Nasua nasua, crab-eating raccoon Procyon cancrivorus and the nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus. The information contained in this dataset can be used to understand macroecological patterns of biodiversity, community, and population structure, but also to evaluate the ecological consequences of fragmentation, defaunation, and trophic interactions.

RESUMEN

We describe molecular testing for felid alphaherpesvirus 1 (FHV-1), carnivore protoparvovirus 1 (CPPV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), alphacoronavirus 1 (feline coronavirus [FCoV]), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and canine distemper virus (CDV) in whole blood samples of 109 free-ranging and 68 captive neotropical felids from Brazil. Samples from 2 jaguars ( Panthera onca) and 1 oncilla ( Leopardus tigrinus) were positive for FHV-1; 2 jaguars, 1 puma ( Puma concolor), and 1 jaguarundi ( Herpairulus yagouaroundi) tested positive for CPPV-1; and 1 puma was positive for FIV. Based on comparison of 103 nucleotides of the UL24-UL25 gene, the FHV-1 sequences were 99-100% similar to the FHV-1 strain of domestic cats. Nucleotide sequences of CPPV-1 were closely related to sequences detected in other wild carnivores, comparing 294 nucleotides of the VP1 gene. The FIV nucleotide sequence detected in the free-ranging puma, based on comparison of 444 nucleotides of the pol gene, grouped with other lentiviruses described in pumas, and had 82.4% identity with a free-ranging puma from Yellowstone Park and 79.5% with a captive puma from Brazil. Our data document the circulation of FHV-1, CPPV-1, and FIV in neotropical felids in Brazil.

RESUMEN

Large cats feeding habits have been studied through two main methods: scat analysis and the carcasses of prey killed by monitored animals. From November 2001 to April 2004, we studied jaguar predation patterns using GPS telemetry location clusters on a cattle ranch in southern Pantanal. During this period, we recorded 431 carcasses of animals preyed upon by monitored jaguars. Concurrently, we collected 125 jaguar scats opportunistically. We compared the frequencies of prey found through each method. We also compared the prey communities using Bray-Curtis similarity coefficient. These comparisons allowed us to evaluate the use of scat analysis as a means to describe jaguar feeding habits. Both approaches identified prey communities with high similarity (Bray-Curtis coefficient > 70). According to either method, jaguars consume three main prey: cattle (Bos taurus), caiman (Caiman yacare) and peccaries (Tayassu pecari and Pecari tajacu). The two methods did not differ in the frequency of the three main prey over dry and wet seasons or years sampled. Our results show that scat analysis is effective and capable of describing jaguar feeding habits.

RESUMEN

Habitat loss and fragmentation are important threats to carnivores worldwide, and can be especially intense for large predators. Jaguars have already been extirpated from over half of their original area of distribution, and few regions still maintain large populations. For these, detailed understanding is crucial for setting appropriate recovery targets in impacted areas. The Pantanal is among the best examples of a region with a large jaguar population in a healthy environment. Here, we analyzed 12 microsatellite loci to characterize genetic diversity and population structure of 52 jaguars sampled in 4 localities of the southern Pantanal, and compared them with prior studies of heavily fragmented populations of the Atlantic Forest. Although we observed some internal structure among the Pantanal localities, our results indicated that this area comprises a single population with high genetic variability. Moreover, our comparative analyses supported the hypothesis that the strong population structure observed in the Atlantic Forest derives from recent, anthropogenic fragmentation. We also observed significant but low levels of genetic differentiation between the Pantanal and Atlantic Forest populations, indicating recent connectivity between jaguars occurring in these biomes. Evidence for admixture between the Pantanal and a population on the western boundary of the Atlantic Forest corroborates the transitional nature of the latter area, where the jaguar population has already been extirpated. Our results can be used to understand jaguar population dynamics in a region that is less disturbed than the Atlantic forest, and to support the design of conservation strategies that maintain and restore natural connectivity among currently isolated areas.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the scientific consensus on the benefits that breastfeeding provides for the mother, the baby, the family and the environment, and also the recommendation to breastfeed exclusively for six months, this practice is far from being achieved. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for at least six month, as opposed to weaning up to the second month of life in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. METHODS: A case-control study of 124 cases (EBF for at least six months) matched for age and sex with 248 controls (weaning up to the second month of life). Cases and controls were drawn from the III State Health and Nutrition Survey. The exposure variables selected were maternal age and education, per capita income, housing zone, prenatal consultations, type of delivery, professional who assisted the delivery, and prenatal breastfeeding guidance. Logistic regression was applied to variables that showed a p-value < 0.2 in the bivariate analysis, and the variables with p-value < 0.05 were included in the final model. RESULTS: Of the eight groups of variables considered as possible predictors of EBF for at least six months, two remained as associated factors: maternal age between 20 - 35 years old, with odds ratio (OR) 2.5 and 95% confidence interval 95%CI 1.4 - 4.5; and maternal education of 5 - 8 years of schooling (OR 2.1; 95%CI 1.2 - 3.6). CONCLUSION: The study shows that mobilization of the public sector and stimulus to research is still needed for the success of EBF and for mother and child health. .

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to recount the history of the Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira (IMIP)'s Human Milk Bank (HMB), focusing on its pioneers and the introduction of the service. METHODS: a descriptive transversal study with historical focus based on the methods of oral history. The main materials used were bibliographical sources and direct structured interviews with seven participants. Content analysis revealed two categories: the Creation of the IMIP's Human Milk Bank: its pioneers and their influences; and the Introduction of the Service. RESULTS: the IMIP's HMB, set up in 1987, was the brainchild of Professor Fernando Figueira and Dr. Vilneide Braga and its aim was to meet the needs of the Maternity hospital and its neonatal intensive care unit. The inauguration was attended by politicians, breastfeeding experts, TV celebrities and hospital staff. CONCLUSIONS: the methods of oral history were used to build up a history of the origins and evolution of the IMIP's HMB based on the testimony of the individuals involved. The history of the IMIP's HMB is an ongoing, living process and force that produces change, dreams and hope and keeps alight the ideal of a better world for children, mothers and for society at large.
