C4 -consumers in southern Europe: the case of Friuli V.G. (NE-Italy) during early and central Middle Ages.

Isotope variations were studied in necropolises of the early (6th to 7th century CE) and central (10th to 11th century CE) medieval period located in Fruili-Venezia Giulia (Northeastern Italy). The two periods each shortly followed two great barbarian invasions that changed the politics and economy of Italy: the arrivals of Langobards in 578 CE and the Hungarian incursions from the end of the 9th to the first half of the 10th century. These events had a tragic effect on the economy of Friuli-Venezia Giulia: severe depopulation and the partial abandonment of the countryside with fall of agricultural production.

More information, more choice: an Italian database for oncology patients.

BACKGROUND: In recent years there has been a proliferation of cancer information available for patients in the Italian language. However, quantity without validation and organization is by no means synonymous with providing good information and a good service. Furthermore, the lack of coordination and cooperation between the various information-providing initiatives results in uncontrolled waste. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To impose order on the vast ocean of cancer information in Italian, and to provide patients with a reliable and comprehensive tool, the Azalea Project was developed whereby a database of information for patients was created. Paper-based and electronic information is validated and stored so that patients can search and retrieve it. Validation is by means of a grid drawn up by the project team with reference to international standards. RESULTS: The nucleus of the database constructed by the Centro di Riferimento Oncologico (Oncology Referral Centre), Aviano, was extended using the wide experience of the Italian Cancer Institutes within the Italian Alliance Against Cancer. The website is at http://www.azaleaweb.it CONCLUSIONS: Meetings and courses specially designed for the project enabled evaluation grids to be created and permitted a fruitful interchange of skills and experience from a variety of professional information providers united in the common aim of providing patients with a service that meets their needs and puts them in control at a difficult time in their lives.

E-oncology and health portals: instructions and standards for the evaluation, production organisation and use.

In 2002 the Italian Ministry of Health promoted the institution of a network and a web portal, E-oncology (2), for the seven NHS research institutions specialising in oncology (Istituti di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico-IRCCS). One of the aims was to gather and provide information on tumoral pathologies to operators and the public. For an optimum organisation of a health web site it is necessary to comply with the standards internationally used. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has developed guidelines for accessibility and usability of the sites, implemented in Italy through governmental issues. Many international organisations adopt rules and codes of conduct to validate biomedical information and have organised quality portals such as NLM, OMNI, MEDCIRCLE, HON etc. Some terminological standards, such as the MESH thesaurus and UMLS, have been produced by the libraries for a correct management and an effective information retrieval, and are currently used by the most important biomedical web sites. The Dublin Core, metadata standard for the integration of information deriving from heterogeneous archives, has also been developed by the libraries. The easy access to information dims the complex architecture necessary for the construction of a web site. The contribution of different professionals is necessary to guarantee the production of quality medical/health web sites, among them librarians have always been involved with the management of knowledge and their skills are extremely valuable. Furthermore, the libraries' network is essential in order to guarantee universal access to health information, mostly still against payment, and to contribute to overcoming the 'digital divide' and 'second-level digital divide'.

Tratamento de longa duraçäo com "Duovent" em pacientes idosas portadores de doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica / Long term treatment using Duovent in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases

Doze pacientes, com idade de 60 anos e portadores de doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica, foram tratados durante 12 semanas com Duovent (fenoterol + brometo de ipratrópio). As avaliaçöes clínicas e índice de obstruçäo brônquica (VEF1, CV, VR, CEVA) foram realizados cada 14 dias. A melhora dos sintomas correspondeu a uma melhora significante dos parâmetros funcionais. Näo se observou efeito cardiovascular negativo, efeitos colaterais significativos ou tolerância após a administraçäo da droga

Long-term treatment with 'Duovent' in elderly patients affected by chronic obstructive lung disease.

Twelve patients, aged over 60 years and suffering from chronic obstructive lung disease, were treated for 12 weeks with Duovent (fenoterol + ipratropium bromide). The clinical check-ups and indices of bronchial obstruction (FEV1, VC, RV, sGaw) were performed every 14 days. Improvement in symptoms corresponded to a significant improvement in the functional parameters. No negative cardiovascular effects, significant side-effects, or tolerance were seen after drug administration.

[Treatment of chronic respiratory insufficiency of pulmonary origin. Clinical considerations]. / La terapia dell'insufficienza respiratoria cronica pneumogena. Considerazioni cliniche.

The key-points of the physiopathological treatment of chronic pneumogenous respiratory insufficiency are: correction of distribution defects, suitable local adjustment of the ventilation: perfusion ratio, and correction of obstacles to alveolocapillary diffusion. Many drugs can be used to obtain these results; bronchodilators, vasoactive drugs, cortisones, cardiokinetics, antibiotics, analeptics. Reference is also made to oxygen therapy, depletion management (bloodletting and-or diuretics, and their possible mechanisms. Lastly, attention is given to disturbances, in acid-base equilibrium in chronic respiratory insufficiency and their correction.
