RESUMEN

In this study, agro-morphological properties, phenolic compounds, and organic acid contents in the fruits of service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) genotypes naturally grown in Türkiye (Bolu) were determined. The fruit weights of genotypes were found to be quite variable, ranging from 5.42 g (14MR05) to 12.54 g (14MR07). The highest L*, a*, and b* fruit external color values were found to be 34.65 (14MR04), 10.48 (14MR09), and 9.10 (14MR08), respectively. The highest chroma and hue values were recorded as 12.87 (14MR09) and 49.07 (14MR04), respectively. 14MR03 and 14MR08 genotypes exhibited the highest amount of soluble solid content and titratable acidity (TA) as 20.58 and 1.55%, respectively. The pH value was found to be in the range of 3.98 (14MR010)-4.32 (14MR04). Chlorogenic acid (14MR10, 48.49 mg/100 g), ferulic acid (14MR10, 36.93 mg/100 g), and rutin (14MR05, 36.95 mg/100 g) were predominant phenolic acids observed in the fruits of service tree genotypes. The predominant organic acid in all fruit samples was malic acid (14MR07, 34.14 g/kg fresh weight basis), and the highest quantity of vitamin C was detected at 95.83 mg/100 g in genotype 14MR02. Principal component analyses (%) were performed to determine the correlation between the morphological-physicochemical (60.6%) and biochemical characteristics of genotypes (phenolic compounds: 54.3%; organic acids and vitamin C: 79.9%). It was determined that measured genotypes were important genetic resources in terms of nutritional value.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIM: It is not known why cerebrovascular and cardiovascular ischaemic events are less frequently observed in heterozygous beta thalassaemia (HBT) patients than in the general population. However, we previously reported that serum levels of some platelet function markers, i.e. soluble CD40 ligand and soluble P-selectin, are lower in patients with HBT than in controls. A high mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of in vivo platelet activation and may indicate a tendency to thrombosis. We investigated whether MPV is lower in HBT patients than in controls. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with HBT were compared with 51 controls matched for gender, age, and BMI for MPV in a cross-sectional study. RESULTS: The MPV was within the normal range and higher in the HBT group (9.64 ± 1.20 vs. 9.07 ± 082 fL, p = 0.006). The 2 groups were similar in terms of atherosclerosis risk factors and medications. After linear regression analysis, the MPV was correlated with HBT, sensitive CRP, and BMI. CONCLUSION: The higher MPV in patients with HBT could indicate platelet activation, and this may represent a dilemma. Higher MPV in the HBT group might have resulted from higher sympathetic nervous system activity, mild ineffective erythropoiesis, and haemolysis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND Heterozygous beta thalassemia (HBT) has been proposed to increase the risk of developing autoimmune disease. Our aim in this study was to examine the prevalence of HBT among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS HBT frequency was investigated in our MS group (243 patients with MS). Hemoglobin electrophoresis (HE) was carried out if MS patients had a mean corpuscular volume of (MCV) <80 fL and a mean corpuscular hemoglobin level of (MCH) <27 pg/L according to a complete blood count (CBC). If MCV was lower than 80 fL, MCH was lower than 27 pg/L, and Hemoglobin A2 equal to or higher than 3.5%, a diagnosis of HBT was established. The frequency of patients with HBT in our MS patient group was statistically compared with the prevalence of HBT in the city of Istanbul, where our MS patients lived. RESULTS The HBT prevalence was 0.823% (2 patients) in the MS patient group. The prevalence of HBT in Istanbul has been reported to be 4.5%. According to the z-test, the HBT prevalence in our MS patient group was significantly lower than that in Istanbul (Z=6.3611, two-sided p value <0.0001, 95% confidence interval of prevalence of HBT in our MS patient group: 0.000998-0.029413). CONCLUSIONS Contrary to our hypothesis at the outset of study, the reduced HBT prevalence in the MS group compared to HBT frequency in the city of Istanbul might indicate that HBT is protective against MS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Endocan is a newly identified proteoglycan released from endothelium, stimulating angiogenesis and when increased, indicates endothelial activation (inflammation). Our aim was to examine the association between serum endocan levels and urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR). METHOD: One hundred and thirty-seven patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and normal serum creatinine who had no co-morbidities other than hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, or neuropathy were divided into normoalbuminuria (G1), microalbuminuria (G2), and macroalbuminuria (G3) groups and compared cross-sectionally regarding serum endocan levels. RESULT: There were 55, 47, and 35 patients in G1, G2, and G3, respectively. The groups were comparable in terms of gender, age, duration of diabetes, diabetic neuropathy/retinopathy, fasting glucose, HbA1c, serum creatinine level, and eGFR. Patients in G3 had significantly higher blood pressure but lower serum albumin and endocan levels. UACR showed a negative bivariate correlation with serum endocan levels (r = -.282, p = .001). There was bivariate positive correlation between endocan and systolic blood pressure (r=.185, p = .030). In linear regression analysis, UACR was negatively correlated with endocan while positively correlated with systolic blood pressure, duration of diabetes, and platelet distribution width. CONCLUSION: Patients with macroalbuminuria had lower endocan levels, and increasing UACR was associated with decreasing serum endocan levels. Despite the occurrence of angiogenesis and glomerular hypertrophy in the early phase of diabetic nephropathy, ensuing significant renal injury over time may reduce the expression of endocan. Serum endocan levels may represent a novel marker for nephropathy progression.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Midkine (MK), which is expressed in the proximal tubular epithelial cells of the kidney, is thought to have a role in the pathophysiology of inflammation-related renal diseases. Both immunological and nonimmunological mechanisms may affect renal functions negatively during the early and late post-transplantation periods. We aimed in our study to evaluate the relationship of MK with clinical findings and inflammatory markers, including high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in the pretransplant and post-transplant period. METHODS: Forty-one consecutive patients transplanted from living related donors were included in this prospective observational study. All patients received the same immunosuppressive treatment protocol. MK, hsCRP, IL-6 and TNF-α levels were measured before and 2 months after renal transplantation. RESULTS: Pretransplant MK levels correlated positively with hsCRP (r = 0.41, p = 0.004) and IL-6 (r = 0.58, p<0.001). The mean post-transplant MK level was found to be higher than the pretransplant level (143 ± 350 pg/mL, 2792 ± 4235 pg/mL respectively, p = <0.001), while the mean hsCRP, IL-6 and TNF-α levels did not change significantly. Post-transplant IL-6 correlated significantly with MK (r = 0.388, p = 0.012), hsCRP (r = 0.41, p = 0.007) and TNF-α (r = 0.348, p = 0.026). There was no significant correlation between clinical findings and inflammatory markers. CONCLUSIONS: MK may be a good inflammatory marker in renal transplant recipients as in other inflammatory diseases. Moreover, it seems that it is not affected by factors other than inflammation during the post-transplantation period.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate bone resorption and formation markers as well as bone mineral density in women with restless legs syndrome (RLS). METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional case-control study involving drug-naive women with RLS and age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched female controls. Routine blood analyses, markers of bone formation, procollagen 1 n-terminal peptide, bone resorption, c-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX), sclerostin, and bone mineral density (BMD) were compared between the 2 groups. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals with comorbidities other than iron deficiency, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or hypertension were excluded. RESULTS: A significant increase in lumbar BMD was found among 78 women with RLS as compared to 78 age- and BMI-matched controls (p = 0.001). The proportion of patients with osteopenia as defined by a lumbar T score was significantly lower among patients with RLS (p = 0.040). CTX and sclerostin were significantly lower in patients with RLS (p = 0.006 and p = 0.011, respectively), as were the levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, calcemia, and free T3 (p = 0.017, p = 0.017, and p = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Despite lower 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, patients with RLS had lower bone resorption markers, higher lumbar BMD, and lower frequency of lumbar osteopenia. As patients with RLS make movements night and day to decrease the severity of their symptoms, they unconsciously perform exercise, which may potentially explain the better bone profile among patients with RLS than in controls.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Endocan is a recently introduced marker of endothelial dysfunction. The objective of this study was to compare serum endocan levels in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and control subjects in order to elucidate whether RLS is associated with endothelial dysfunction. METHODS: A total of 31 drug naïve female patients with RLS and 31 age- and BMI-matched women were included in the study. Patients with pathological or physiological conditions or with a history of medication use that could potentially influence endothelial functions were excluded, as well as those with alcohol or drug abuse history. The two groups were compared with routine blood tests and serum endocan levels. RESULTS: Patients with RLS had lower serum endocan levels than the controls (P=0.037). There was a negative bivariate correlation between RLS severity score and serum endocan levels (r=-0.406, P=0.023). While white blood cell count was significantly higher in RLS group, 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, vitamin B12, transferrin saturation rate, and HDL-cholesterol were significantly lower. Creatininemia and diastolic blood pressure were also marginally insignificantly lower in RLS group. Due to the presence of differences between two groups in these variables, a linear regression analysis was performed that showed a positive association between endocan and creatininemia (ß=0.310, P=0.022), and a negative association between endocan and RLS (ß=-0.502, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study seem to suggest that patients with RLS may have better endothelial functions when compared with the general population and that these patients may be better protected against atherosclerosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: There are numerous changes in inflammatory status that occur after a kidney transplant. Pentraxin 3 is a marker of inflammation, but little information is available about pentraxin 3 levels after a kidney transplant. We evaluated the relation between pentraxin 3 and other inflammatory markers including high sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha in kidney transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult patients (40 patients; aged, 18-80 y; mean age, 38 ± 10 y) who had a kidney transplant from living-related donors were studied. Patients who had comorbidities associated with chronic inflammation were excluded. Blood samples were obtained before starting immunosuppressive treatment and 2 months after kidney transplant for measurement of pentraxin 3, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor α levels. RESULTS: After transplant, mean levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin 6 decreased but levels of pentraxin 3 and tumor necrosis factor alpha did not change. There were significant correlations between interleukin 6 and high sensitivity C-reactive protein before transplant (r = 0.71; P ≤ .0001) and after transplant (r = 0.45; P ≤ .003). There was no correlation between tumor necrosis factor alpha and high sensitivity C-reactive protein before transplant, but there was a significant correlation between tumor necrosis factor alpha and high sensitivity C-reactive protein after transplant (r = 0.36; P ≤ .03). There was no correlation between interleukin 6 and pentraxin 3, tumor necrosis factor alpha and pentraxin 3, or high sensitivity C-reactive protein and pentraxin 3 before or after transplant. CONCLUSIONS: After a kidney transplant, pentraxin 3 may not be useful in determining inflammatory status, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein may be better than pentraxin 3 as a marker of inflammation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of migraine and other headaches is still unknown, and research is mostly done on neurotransmitter, biochemical and vascular mechanisms. The aim of this study was to examine the role of antioxidant enzymes in the pathophysiology of headache in the interictal period of the pain process. METHODS: In this study, glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities were investigated in 88 cases, which included 11 migraine cases with aura, 17 migraine without aura, 32 chronic type tension headache and 28 control cases. RESULTS: In migraine cases, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activities were statistically lower than in the tension headache and control groups. The differences between tension-type headache and control groups were found statistically insignificant. CONCLUSIONS: Low intraerythrocytes, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase levels may play an important role in the etiology of migraine.
