Odour imagery, the ability to experience smell when an appropriate stimulus is absent, has widely been documented as being particularly difficult. However, previous studies have shown the beneficial effect of visual cues (e.g., pictures or words) to facilitate performance in numerous tasks of olfactory nature. Therefore, the use of visual cues to evoke odours seems relevant. In this study, our interest is directed towards non-figurative coloured arrangements, which result from a patented technology and aim at chromatically representing any smell from its chemical composition and sensory description. The aim of this study was to characterise the neural mechanisms of odour imagery facilitated by these non-figurative coloured arrangements. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we recorded and compared hemodynamic responses during odour imagery facilitated by non-figurative coloured arrangements and pictures. Our findings reveal that the use of non-figurative coloured arrangements during odour imagery solicits olfactory and non-olfactory brain regions (orbitofrontal cortex, insula, hippocampus, thalamus, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and supplementary motor area), which are mainly involved in olfactory processing and multimodal integration. Moreover, very similar cortical activity was found between the use of non-figurative coloured arrangements and pictures during odour imagery, with increased activity in the supplementary motor area during the use of coloured arrangements only. Overall, non-figurative coloured arrangements could become a robust tool to visually evoke odours without requiring prior familiarity with the depicted odour. Future studies should use psychometric measures to determine the relationships between brain activation, odour imagery ability and vividness of the generated odour images.

Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) rehabilitation requires the development of new methods that can be easily integrated into conventional practice. The aim of the HEMISTIM protocol is to assess immediate and long-term recovery induced by an innovative association of left-side neck-muscle vibration (NMV) and anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on the ipsilesional posterior parietal cortex during occupational therapy sessions in patients with left USN. Participants will be randomly assigned to four groups: control, Left-NMV, Left-NMV + sham-tDCS or Left-NMV + anodal-tDCS. NMV and tDCS will be applied during the first 15 min of occupational therapy sessions, three days a week for three weeks. USN will be assessed at baseline, just at the end of the first experimental session, after the first and third weeks of the protocol and three weeks after its ending. Our primary outcome will be the evolution of the functional Catherine Bergego Scale score. Secondary outcome measures include five tests that investigate different neuropsychological aspects of USN. Left NMV, by activating multisensory integration neuronal networks, might enhance effects obtained by conventional therapy since post-effects were shown when it was combined with upper limb movements. We expect to reinforce lasting intermodal recalibration through LTP-like plasticity induced by anodal tDCS.

School-aged prematurely born children (PC) have a higher risk of academic difficulties, which may be partly explained by attention difficulties. It has been suggested that children's attentional performance might be influenced by their body posture and spontaneous body motion. The aim of this study (ClinicalTrials.gov - NCT03125447) was to test the influence of three body mobility conditions on the three functions of attention (alertness, orienting, and executive control) among school-aged PC vs. term-born children (TC). Notably, 21 PC and 21 TC performed the Attention Network Test for Children in three body mobility conditions, namely, sitting and standing imposed fixed postures and a free-to-move condition. The children's median reaction times were compared between trials (1) with and without alerting cues, (2) with valid and invalid orienting cues, and (3) with and without distracting information, to calculate the performance of alertness, orienting, and executive control, respectively. Results showed that with distracting information, PC exhibited significantly slower responses in the standing-still posture than in the sitting-still posture (1,077 ± 240 vs. 1,175 ± 273 ms, p < 0.05), but not TC. No difference was observed with the free-to-move condition. PC and TC did not significantly differ in alertness or orienting, regardless of body mobility condition. These data suggest that PC must use executive resources to stand still and maintain position, which impairs their performance during executive tasks. We speculate that these results may be related to less developed postural control and motor inhibition in PC.

Learning in 6- to 7-year-old children is strongly influenced by three functions of attention: alertness, orienting, and executive control. These functions share a close relationship with body mobility, such as the posture adopted or a request to stay still during tasks. The aim of this study (ClinicalTrials.gov) was to analyze the influence of body posture (standing versus sitting) and the influence of these imposed postures compared to a free body mobility on attention functions in 6- to 7-year-old children. Twenty-one children (11 girls) with a mean age of 6.7±0.6years performed the Attention Network Test for Children in three-body mobility conditions: sitting still, standing still, and free to move. Three attentional scores were calculated which would separately reflect performance of alertness, orienting, and executive control. Overall, no difference in alertness performance was found between the three bodily mobility conditions. In addition, our results suggest a general poor orienting performance in children, whatever the body mobility condition, which might be related to their young age. Finally, children improved their executive control performance when they stood still, probably due to an improvement in arousal and mental state.

This study investigated the effects of mental fatigue (MF) induced by a 90-min AX-continuous performance test (AX-CPT) on balance control by addressing the issue of the heterogeneity of individuals' responses. Twenty healthy young active participants were recruited. They had to carry out two balance tasks (sway as little as possible on a stable support with the eyes open and closed) when standing on a force platform before and after performing a 90-min AX-CPT. The NASA-TLX test was used to assess the subjective manifestations of MF. Objective cognitive performance was measured using results from the AX-CPT. Inter-individual differences in behavioral deterioration due to MF were analyzed with a hierarchical cluster analysis, which categorizes participants' behaviors into subgroups with similar characteristics. The cluster analysis revealed that the achievement of the AX-CPT induced various levels of MF and balance impairments within the whole sample. A significant relationship between the level of MF and the degree of balance disturbance was observed only when participants stood with the eyes open, thus suggesting that inter-individual differences in vulnerability to MF could stem from differences between subjects in the level of engagement of visual attention and/or from differences in field dependency for balance control. These findings show that the completion of the same prolonged demanding cognitive task induces a strong heterogeneity in subjects' responses, with marked individual differences in MF vulnerability that affect balance control differently according to the sensory context.

Among the techniques used to reduce spatial neglect's symptoms, left neck muscle vibration (NMV) is alluring because it does not require the patient's attentional co-operation. The aim of this study was to determine the type of NMV-associated feedback that induced the most intense and longest-lasting egocentric post-effects. Eighty-seven healthy individuals were randomly assigned to four intervention groups: "neck muscle vibration, blindfolded" (NMV), "neck muscle vibration with vision" (NMV + V), "neck muscle vibration and visual finger-pointing" (NMV + P), and "visual finger-pointing" (P). An eyes-closed finger-pointing subjective straight-ahead (SSA) test was carried out before the intervention, immediately afterwards, and 30 min afterwards. The results showed that only the NMV + P intervention induced a lasting leftward bias of SSA. In addition, the deviation reported in this intervention group differed significantly from those observed in the other interventions. The combination of visuo-haptic feedback and neck-somatosensory stimulation may enable a full, lasting intermodal recalibration, which could be potentiated by the attention level engaged during voluntary pointing. These outcomes highlighted that the NMV technique could easily integrate into routine occupational therapy sessions for treating various aspects of neglect disorders.

BACKGROUND: Profound hearing loss is a public health problem with serious consequences for patient's quality of life. Some of them, submitted to cochlear implantation, revealed various postural disorders such as balance and spatial perception disorders without detail on their vestibular status. RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this preliminary study was to analyze the evolution of the balance control and geocentric perception after cochlear implantation procedure in normo-reflexic patients before the implant activation. METHODS: We assessed balance control of five patients with profound hearing loss and five healthy participants by means of computerized dynamic posturography and their geocentric perception by the subjective visual vertical test before surgery, three days and forty-five days after surgery (prior to implant activation). RESULTS: Before surgery, the patients showed some difficulties to control their balance in challenged postural context without geocentric perception disorder. Patients presented an improvement in their postural accuracy, but their balance control remained inappropriate in challenging environment. Moreover, their geocentric perception was deviated towards their healthy ear immediately after cochlear implantation. This misperception naturally fades before the implant activation. SIGNIFICANCE: This transient spatial perception alteration might probably cause the perceived postural discomforts and the daily difficulties often reported by these patients in their clinical records early after cochlear implantation. This preliminary study allows for the first time the distinction between the both components of posture: balance control and geocentric perception. Therefore, a specific therapeutic care targeting the rehabilitation of spatial cognition could be proposed to these patients in order to reduce their transient postural disorders.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of mental fatigue (MF) induced by a 90-min continuous demanding cognitive task on balance control. Twenty healthy young participants were recruited. They had to perform three postural tasks (on a stable support with eyes open, with eyes closed and on a wobble board) while standing on a force platform before and after watching a documentary in a control condition or carrying out a prolonged continuous demanding cognitive task (AX-continuous performance test-AX-CPT) in a MF condition. Results showed that performing the AX-CPT generated MF since participants felt a higher subjective workload from the NASA Task Load Index after the AX-CPT than after viewing the documentary. Both the AX-CPT and the viewing of the documentary impaired balance control, mainly by affecting postural regulatory mechanisms which evolved towards a less automatic and less complex regulation mode with an increased participation of cognitive resources. MF generated by the AX-CPT affected balance control by compromising the attentional processing, while the deleterious influence of watching a documentary on postural control could stem from an adverse effect of prolonged sitting on balance control during subsequent standing.

Several studies have shown a significant relationship between smelling and olfactory imagery abilities. The primary aim of the present study was to validate a French version of the Vividness of Olfactory Imagery Questionnaire (VOIQ). The secondary aim was to investigate its capability to differentiate individuals with smell loss from healthy individuals. After having elaborated a French translation of the VOIQ (fVOIQ), we evaluated olfactory imagery abilities of 387 French participants who anonymously self-completed the fVOIQ: 121 pathologic individuals (hyposmic and anosmic), 244 normosmic individuals (healthy non-expert), and 22 fragrance experts. Significant split-half reliability as expressed by Spearman correlation coefficients for the global sample, as well as for each group separately, indicated the excellent internal consistency of the fVOIQ. Moreover, results revealed a significant effect of the smelling ability group on fVOIQ score, suggesting that daily olfactory stimulation is fundamental to maintaining the ability to create a vivid image and that severe loss of smell may result in progressive impairment of olfactory imagery. Our fVOIQ and the original English version seemingly have similarly high benefit in differentiating experts and normosmic individuals based on their olfactory imagery ability. Moreover, the fVOIQ seems capable of differentiating individuals with loss of smell from healthy individuals. These findings demonstrate the reliability and validity of the fVOIQ, and its capability to differentiate individuals' smelling ability according to their olfactory imagery ability.

PURPOSE: Beyond promising experimental results of sensory passive stimulations in spatial cognition disorders, some questions still remain regarding interests of these stimulations during the daily activities in neglect. The aim of this case-study was to evaluate the effects of a protocol combining left neck-muscle vibration with daily simple movements, like arm pointing movements, on perceptivo-locomotor deficits in a left spatial neglect patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two neuropsychological tests, one subjective straight-ahead pointing (SSA) test and one wheelchair navigation test were carried out before the combination protocol, immediately after, 1 h later, and 24 h later. RESULTS: The results showed a reduction of neglect spatial bias following the protocol lasted at least 24 h in all the tests (except for the SSA test due to the unavailability of the pointing device). CONCLUSIONS: The range of improvements in the symptoms of spatial neglect suggests that this therapeutic intervention based on the combining neck-muscle vibration to voluntary arm movements could be a useful treatment for this condition. One of future investigation axes should be the development of a vibratory tool in order to facilitate the combining this proprioceptive stimulation to daily activities. Implications for rehabilitation Spatial neglect is a perplexing neuropsychological syndrome, affecting different domains of spatial cognition and impacting also the functional domain. The treatments based on neck-muscle vibration are simple to use, non-invasive and requires none active participation of patient. A therapeutic intervention based on the combining left neck-muscle vibration and voluntary arm movements in a left-spatial-neglect show a lasting reduction of symptoms especially in daily activities. The combination of treatments based on the Bottom-Up approach opens innovative perspectives in rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Seven years of age is a milestone for learning basic knowledge that is strongly related to attention abilities such as Alerting, Orienting, and Inhibition function, allowing for appropriate adaptation to primary school. These attention abilities are also influenced by gestational age at birth in a complex manner, indicating an area of weakness in prematurely born children. Furthermore, recent studies suggest that allowing children to have freedom of movement during learning may improve their attention level and school performance. The purpose of the present study is to determine the influence of mobility on the attentional components that may impact learning abilities in children aged 7-years who were born at term and prematurely. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, controlled trial will focus on psychometric testing of attentional abilities assessed with the Attention Network Test for Child (Child ANT) and involves a mixed measurement design. Forty-eight children aged 7-years, half of whom were premature at birth and in their expected grade without learning difficulties will be included after parental consent. They will be equipped with a head-mounted display in which the Child ANT will be presented. The association of different flankers and pre-cues will allow the measurement of the development level of Alerting, Orienting, and Inhibition function. The task will be composed of one experimental block of trials randomly performed per posture: seated, standing, or free. DISCUSSION: This study will assess the contribution of mobility in specific attentional contexts that are usually present during fundamental learning in children. New pedagogical formats of teaching could consider these findings, and new pedagogical tools enabling free spontaneous child mobility might be designed. Moreover, a small percentage of children integrating into the educational system are born prematurely. These children, often considered immature and hyperactive, could benefit from educational innovations that enhance their attention abilities, thereby improving their adaptation to primary school. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov ( NCT03125447 ).

Muscle-tendon vibration has often been used to study the contribution of proprioception to kinesthesia and postural control. This technique is known to simulate the lengthening of the vibrated muscle and, in the presence of balance constraints, evoke compensatory postural responses. The objective of the present study was to clarify the consequences of this stimulation on the dynamic features of whole-body movement perception in upright stance and in the absence of balance constraints. Eleven participants were restrained in a dark room on a motorized backboard that was able to tilt the upright body around the ankle joints. The participants were passively tilted backwards or forwards with a maximum amplitude of four degrees and at very low acceleration (thus preventing the semicircular canals from contributing to movement perception). In half the trials, the body displacement was combined with continuous vibration of the Achilles tendons, which simulates a forward tilt. Participants used a joystick to report when and in which direction they perceived their own whole-body movement. Our results showed that during backward whole-body displacement, the movement detection threshold (i.e. the minimum angular velocity required to accurately perceive passive displacement) was higher in the presence of vibration, whereas the accuracy rate (i.e. the proportion of the overall trial duration during which the movement was correctly indicated) was lower. Conversely, the accuracy rate for forward displacements was higher in the presence of vibration. In the absence of vibration, forward movement was detected earlier than backward movement. The simulated whole-body displacement evoked by Achilles tendon vibration was therefore able to either enhance or disrupt the perception of real, slow, whole-body tilt movements, depending on the congruence between the direction of real and simulated displacements.

The executive committee of the European Society for the clinical evaluation of balance disorders meets annually to address equilibrium problems that are not well understood. This is a review paper on discussions in the latest meeting we held. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seeing patients with vestibular disorders who end up depending on visual information as part of their compensation process is a common clinical occurrence. However, this "visual dependence" can generate symptoms, which include nausea, sensations of imbalance, and anxiety. It is unclear how this develops, as symptoms can be widely variable from patient to patient. There are several triggering factors to this symptom set, and quantifying it in a given patient is extremely difficult Results: The committee agreed that the presence of this symptom set can be suggestive of vestibular pathology, but the pathology does not have to be present. As a result, there is no correlation between symptom severity and test results. CONCLUSION: Visual dependence can often be present in a patient, although little, if any, measurable pathology is present. It is important to emphasize that although we cannot accurately measure this with either standardized testing or pertinent questionnaires, "hypersensitive" patients have a genuine disease and their symptoms are not of psychiatric origin.

The aim of this study was to assess the visuo-oculomotor skills of gaze orientation in selected sport activities relative to visual demands of the sporting environment. Both temporal and spatial demands of the sporting environment were investigated: The latency and accuracy of horizontal saccades and the gain of the horizontal smooth pursuit of the sporting environment were investigated in 16 fencers, 19 tennis players, 12 gymnasts, 9 swimmers and 18 sedentary participants. For the saccade test, two sequences were tested: In the fixed sequence, participants knew in advance the time interval between each target, as well as the direction and the amplitude of its reappearance; in the Freyss sequence however, the spatial changes of the target (direction and amplitude) were known in advance by participants but the time interval between each target was unknown. For the smooth-pursuit test, participants were instructed to smoothly track a target moving in a predictable sinusoidal, horizontal way without corrective ocular saccades, nor via anticipation or head movements. The results showed no significant differences between specificities of selected sporting activities via the saccade latency (although shorter than in non-athletes), contrary to saccade accuracy and the gain of smooth pursuit. Higher saccade accuracy was observed overall in fencers compared to non-athletes and all other sportsmen with the exception of tennis players. In the smooth-pursuit task, only tennis players presented a significantly higher gain compared to non-athletes and gymnasts. These sport-specific characteristics of the visuo-oculomotor skills are discussed with regard to the different cognitive skills such as attentional allocation and cue utilization ability as well as with regard to the difference in motor preparation.

In many daily situations, balance control is associated with a cognitive activity such as reading or a simple calculation. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between these two specific human activities, especially the influence of visual cues and support surface stability on body sway during a calculation task. A Sensory Organization Test, which can disrupt or suppress sensory inputs, was performed on 71 healthy young adults. The evaluations were performed both with and without mental arithmetic tasks which consisted of backward counting by three or thirteen. Our results showed that the addition of a calculation task induced an increase in body sway only when visual cues were available. They also showed the same instability effect of the support surface on the amount of body sway no matter what the associated cognitive task was. Moreover, no difference in body sway was observed between the two calculation tasks no matter what the visual context and/or the stability of the support surface were. We suggest that focusing on fulfilling the requirements of the mental calculation challenge may be responsible for the increase in body sway. This increase may be related to the use of oculomotor activity as unintentional attempts to increase arousal by self-generated body movement. Thus, this activity facilitates information processing rather than minimizing unbalance by a visual anchor point.

BACKGROUND: Our study probed the relationship between field dependence and the development of nausea in light and dark during whole-body, off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). METHODS: There were 24 subjects who underwent OVAR at 0.2 Hz, 18 degree tilt. Exposures were undertaken in both light and darkness in sessions spaced 5 d apart in balanced order design. During rotation, nausea was rated at 1-min intervals to a cut off at 20 min or a level of 'moderate nausea' was attained, at which point motion stopped. Before and after OVAR sessions field dependence was rated with the rod and frame test (RFT) with head upright or tilted 28 degree to induce a head-centric bias. RESULTS: Subjects tolerated OVAR longer in the light (mean 13.3 min +/- 6.8 SD) than in darkness (11.1 min +/- 7.2). Motion sickness susceptibility evaluated by questionnaire was inversely correlated with tolerance of OVAR in the light. There was a tendency for subjects who were visual field dependent to fare better with OVAR in the light than in darkness. Subjects whose RFT estimates with head tilted tended to incline the visual vertical to the direction of head tilt better tolerated OVAR in darkness. DISCUSSION: The results suggest that susceptibility, as evaluated by questionnaires probing motion sickness experiences in daily life, is influenced by visual factors. Assessments of sensitivity to reference frames for orientation, either visual or ego-centered, show promise for markers of motion sickness susceptibility according to the visual surround rather than to absolute levels of susceptibility to motion sickness.

RESUMEN

The majority of previous studies which have explored the mechanisms underlying perception of the direction of gravity in static roll tilt have proposed that the tendency to estimate the subjective visual vertical (SVV) as tilted towards body tilt ('Aubert effect') arises from an underestimation of perceived body tilt. The present study has evaluated an alternative assumption that erroneous estimates of verticality may be related to the ability to estimate the orientation of external objects with respect to the observer's perceived body Z-axis. Experiments showed that Aubert effects and the overestimation of 30-90 degrees angles from the body Z-axis in the roll plane were both related to errors made in adjusting a visual rod parallel to the body Z-axis. The results suggest that errors in providing visual estimates of the observer's own body Z-axis reference are implicated in Aubert effect.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of age, segmental acceleration and sensory context on anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) in a forward leg raising task. METHODS: Three groups of 11 children, aged 8, 10 and 12, and 12 adults, aged 20 to 26, were instructed to perform this movement at maximal (MAXIMAL) and sub-maximal segmental accelerations and in normal (CONTROL), no vision (NV) and perturbed proprioception conditions (VIB). The generation and calibration of APAs were examined through the centre of foot pressure displacements: The onset, duration and amplitude of APAs were particularly explored. The EMG activity of the tibialis anterior (TA(stance)) and gastrocnemius medialis (G(stance)) of the stance leg was also recorded. RESULTS: Two phases were clearly identified on the ML axis: A thrust and an unloading phase. Effect of age: At 8 and 10, (1) the unloading duration was shorter, and (2) the onset of APAs on the ML axis appeared later than in 12-year-old children and in adults. Effect of the segmental acceleration: (1) a greater amplitude of the thrust and unloading phases, (2) a shorter unloading duration, and (3) a later onset of ML APAs and of the TA(stance) activity were observed at maximal acceleration in all groups. Effect of the sensory context: No difference was found between the CONTROL and NV conditions. When the proprioceptive feedback was altered, (1) the thrust and unloading durations increased, and (2) the onset of the APAs on the ML axis occurred earlier. CONCLUSION: All children exhibited an anticipatory behaviour, but the adults' behaviour was reached at 12 only. Our results also indicated a change in the generation and calibration of APAs in the VIB condition, suggesting that proprioceptive information is essential for both dimensions of the APAs. SIGNIFICANCE: The development of the APAs was not related to the segmental acceleration and to the sensory context of the forthcoming movement in children aged 8-12. It is very likely that the participants built up an internal representation of this movement.

INTRODUCTION: Neck proprioceptors are essential for orienting the head relative to the trunk. However, it has been shown that the available information about the relationship of gravity to different body parts would augment the clues about their relative orientation. In weightlessness, the absence of relevant body position signals from the otoliths and other inertial graviceptors requires the substitution of other sensory information. The aim of the present study was to investigate the ability of humans to accurately locate the head relative to the trunk in microgravity. METHODS: Experiments were conducted during two separate sessions: on Earth and during parabolic flights. Volunteers were asked to adjust a visual rod until it looked parallel to their head or trunk axis in two different segmental configurations: head and trunk aligned or head tilted. RESULTS: There was no effect of microgravity when the head and trunk were aligned. However, when the head was tilted with respect to the trunk, the orientation of the visual rod relative to the head or the trunk (visual egocentric coordinates) was deviated toward the head tilt, although the orientation between the body parts themselves (head-trunk angle) was correctly estimated. DISCUSSION: These results suggested that, in microgravity, the proprioceptive signals from neck muscles seem sufficient to provide accurate head on trunk information. However, the representation of orientation in visual space was modified. This experiment provides evidence for the role of gravity on the visual perception of head- and trunk-based egocentric coordinates.

Vibration applied to the Achilles tendon is well known to induce in freely standing subjects a backward body displacement and in restrained subjects an illusory forward body tilt. The purpose of the present experiment was to evaluate the effect of Achilles tendon vibration (90Hz) on postural orientation in subjects free of equilibrium constraints. Subjects (n=12) were strapped on a backboard that could be rotated in the antero-posterior direction with the axis of rotation at the level of the ankles. They stood on a rigid horizontal floor with the soles of their feet parallel to the ground. They were initially positioned 7 degrees backward or forward or vertical and were required to adjust their body (the backboard) to the vertical orientation via a joystick. Firstly, results showed that in response to Achilles tendon vibration, subjects adjusted their body backward compared to the condition without vibration. This backward body adjustment likely cancel the appearance of an illusory forward body tilt. It was also observed that the vibratory stimulus applied to the Achilles tendon elicited in restrained standing subjects an increased EMG activity in both the gastrocnemius lateralis and the soleus muscles. Secondly, this vibration effect was more pronounced when passive displacement during the adjustment phase was congruent with the simulated elongation of calf muscles. These results indicated that the perception of body orientation is coherent with the postural response classically observed in freely standing subjects although the relationship between these two responses remains to be elucidated.
