RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Understanding the patient journey is important to optimize care for patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and overcome challenges in diagnosis and management. OBJECTIVE: To explore patient and caregiver perspectives regarding their experience with AD. METHODS: Patients and caregivers of patients with AD completed a pre-meeting survey and were invited to join an advisory board meeting in their country (China, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan and Lebanon) to discuss the survey results. Data were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS: The survey included 31 participants (patients and caregivers) from Hong Kong (n = 7), China (n = 7), Ireland (n = 6), Japan (n = 6) and Lebanon (n = 5). The most challenging factors in the AD journey were management of symptoms before a confirmed diagnosis (68%), sudden recurrence of flares or worsening of symptoms (68%) and lifestyle changes (52%). In terms of overall AD management, 35% of participants indicated that AD was managed well, 23% had a clear treatment plan and 19% were generally satisfied with disease management. A collaborative relationship with healthcare professionals was favored. CONCLUSION: A holistic assessment of AD includes understanding patient and caregiver preferences, needs, experiences and disease perceptions. Addressing the identified gaps may improve the management of AD.

RESUMEN

Urticaria is a disabling condition, resulting in an impaired quality of life and sleep disruption, and can have an adverse impact on work-related or school-related performance and attendance. It is defined according to the presence of unknown (chronic spontaneous urticaria) or known (inducible urticaria) eliciting factors. Guidelines recommend second-generation H1-antihistamines for the first-line treatment of urticaria. Bilastine is indicated in adults, adolescents (aged ≥12 years) and children (aged ≥2 years (Mexico and some African countries), ≥4 years (Canada) or ≥6 years (Europe)) with a body weight of at least 20 kg for the symptomatic treatment of urticaria and allergic rhino-conjunctivitis. The aim of the Original Real-world cases of Bilastine In Treatment (ORBIT) study was to review real-world cases from across the Asia-Pacific region supported by evidence-based literature. Eight diverse, real-world, difficult-to-treat cases with urticaria in people aged 10-75 years are presented. Once-daily bilastine (20 mg (adults/adolescents) or 10 mg (children)) was found to be well tolerated and effective in the long-term management of chronic spontaneous urticaria and inducible urticaria.

RESUMEN

The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased dramatically in recent years in China, affecting the quality of life in 40% of the population. The identification of allergens is the key to the diagnosis of allergic diseases. Presently, several methods of allergy diagnostics are available in China, but they have not been standardized. Additionally, cross-sensitization and co-sensitization make allergy diagnostics even more complicated. Based on 4 aspects of allergic disease (mechanism, diagnosis procedures, allergen detection in vivo and in vitro as well as the distribution map of the most important airborne allergens in China) and by referring to the consensus of the European Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the World Allergy Organization, and the important literature on allergy diagnostics in China in recent years, we drafted this consensus of allergy diagnostics with Chinese characteristics. It aims to standardize the diagnostic methods of allergens and provides a reference for health care givers. The current document was prepared by a panel of experts from the main stream of professional allergy associations in China.

RESUMEN

Aim: We investigated sublingual immunotherapy for mite-induced allergic rhinitis and its comorbid allergic conditions. Patients & methods: A prospective case-controlled study of 120 patients (case = 80, control = 40) over 12 months. Results: There was 53.6% reduction in total rhinitis symptom score (p < 0.0001), but not in controls (-7.3%, p = 0.99). The total symptom scores for concurrent asthma decreased from 17.79 to 8.8 (p < 0.0001); for allergic conjunctivitis from 20.89 to 10.0 (p = 0.0002); for atopic dermatitis from 46.40 to 29.38 (p = 0.0004) and 74.6% of patients weaned off nasal topical steroids. The treatment-related adverse reactions were mild and self-limiting. Conclusion: Though sublingual immunotherapy may be more expensive than conventional treatments, it was an adjunctive therapy that improved not only the outcomes for allergic rhinitis, but also its comorbid allergic conditions.
