BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 epidemic in China, clinical nurses are at an elevated risk of suffering fatigue. This research sought to investigate the correlation between dispositional mindfulness and fatigue among nurses, as well as the potential mediation role of sleep quality in this relationship. METHODS: This online cross-sectional survey was performed from August to September 2022 to collect data from 2143 Chinese nurses after the re-emergence of COVID-19. The significance of the mediation effect was determined through a bootstrap approach with SPSS PROCESS macro. RESULTS: Higher levels of dispositional mindfulness were significantly negatively related to fatigue (r = -0.518, P < 0.001) and sleep disturbance (r = -0.344, P < 0.001). Besides, insufficient sleep was associated with fatigue (r = 0.547, P < 0.001). Analyses of mediation revealed that sleep quality mediated the correlation of dispositional mindfulness to fatigue (ß = -0.137, 95% Confidence Interval = [-0.156, -0.120]). CONCLUSIONS: In the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, Chinese nurses' dispositional awareness was related to the reduction of fatigue, which was mediated by sleep quality. Intervention strategies and measures should be adapted to improve dispositional mindfulness and sleep quality to reduce fatigue in nurses during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Related studies have shown that miR-221 has the ability to promote inflammatory response. This experiment mainly discusses the effect of miR-221 on acute liver and kidney injury in septic rats. METHOD: Thirty Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into a (1) control group, (2) sepsis group, (3) miR-221 overexpression group, (4) miR-221 inhibition group, (5) HECTD2 inhibition group, and (6) miR-221 overexpression + HECTD2 inhibition group. The sepsis rat model was prepared by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The expression levels of miR-221 and HECTD2 were detected by RT-qPCR. The levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the liver were detected by the IFCC method. The levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were detected by the creatine oxidase method. The levels of inflammatory factors were detected by ELISA. The apoptosis rate of liver and kidney cells was detected by flow cytometry. The expression of p65 protein was detected by western blotting. RESULT: RT-qPCR results showed that the expressions of miR-221 and HECTD2 were upregulated in septic rats (P < 0.05). Compared with group 1, the liver function index, kidney function index, liver and kidney apoptosis rate, serum inflammatory factor level, and p65 protein expression in each group were increased (P < 0.05). Compared with group 2, the liver function index, kidney function index, liver and kidney apoptosis rate, serum inflammatory factor level, and p65 protein expression in groups 4 and 5 were decreased (P < 0.05). Compared with group 2, the expression of HECTD2 was upregulated in group 3 (P < 0.05). Compared with group 3, the liver function index, renal function index, liver and kidney apoptosis rate, serum inflammatory factor level, and p65 protein expression were decreased in group 6 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: MiR-221 promotes the expression of HECTD2 in septic rats, and inhibition of miR-221 expression can reduce the degree of liver and kidney injury in septic rats.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is very common in People's Republic of China. Each year thousands of people die because of this disease, but rabies diagnosed in pregnancy is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we report the case of a pregnant woman who was infected with the rabies virus after a dog bite. The symptoms of rabies appeared in labor and she died after pregnancy. Her baby and husband did not develop the disease. CONCLUSION: The phenomenon that the newborn infant was healthy may be related to the protective role of placenta in resisting the invasion of the rabies virus or the absence of systemic viremia. The prompt administration of vaccines and anti-rabies immunoglobulin to the infant may have also contributed to his survival.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of Rhodiola rosea on the body weight and the intake of sucrose and water in depressive rats induced by chronic mild stress.dz METHODS: A total of 70 male SD rats were divided into seven groups, including normal control group (treated with 0.5% sodium carboxymethycellulose), untreated group, negative control group (treated with 0.5% sodium carboxymethycellulose), positive control group (treated with fluoxetine), low-, medium- and high-dose Rhodiola rosea group (treated with 1.5, 3, 6 g/kg Rhodiola rosea respectively). Except for rats in normal control group, the other sixty rats endured chronic stress for 4 weeks to establish the depression model. After that, rats were administered Rhodiola rosea for 3 weeks. During the whole experiment, the body weight, and sucrose intake, tap water intake of all rats were examined once a week. RESULTS: After the termination of the stress regime, compared with the normal control group, the body weight and 1% sucrose intake in depressive rats were decreased. After 3-week Rhodiola rosea treatment, the body weight and 1% sucrose intake increased in rats of the low-dose Rhodiola rosea group and recovered to the level of the normal control group. CONCLUSION: Low-dose Rhodiola rosea can increase the body weight and sucrose intake of depressive rats, making them recover to normal status.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of Valerian on the level of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), cell proliferation and neuron number in cerebral hippocampus of rats with depression induced by chronic mild stress. METHODS: Seventy rats were divided into 7 groups: normal control, untreated, negative control, positive control, and low-, medium- and high-dose Valerian-treated groups. There were 10 rats in each group. Except for the normal control group, depression was induced in rats by chronic mild stress. The depressive rats in the other six groups were intragastrically administered with sodium carboxymethycellulose, fluoxetine, and low, medium and high-dose Valerian, respectively for 3 weeks. After the treatment, the proliferating cells in the hippocampus were labeled by injecting bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) in 7 groups. The content of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the hippocampus was detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the number of hippocampal neurons was counted by morphometry. RESULTS: Compared with the normal control group, the levels of 5-HT in the hippocampus in the low- and medium-dose Valerian-treated groups were increased and recovered to normal level. After the administration of low-dose Valerian for 3 weeks, the number of BrdU positive cells and neurons in the hippocampus of the depressive rats were recovered to the normal status. CONCLUSION: Minidose Valerian may promote the level of 5-HT and cell proliferation in the hippocampus of the depressive rats, and may play a role in saving injured neurons of the hippocampus.
