RESUMEN

Sulfonated lignin-based dye dispersants have intensively attracted attention due to their low cost, renewability and abundant sources. However, their utilization is limited by the low content of sulfonic groups and high content of hydroxyl groups in their complex lignin structure, which results in various problems such as high reducing rate of dye, severe staining of the fibers and uneven dyeing. Here, the multi-site sulfonated lignin-based dispersants were prepared with high sulfonic group content (2.20 mmol/g) and low hydroxyl content (2.43 mmol/g). When using it as the dispersant, the dye uptake rate was improved from 69.23 % to 98.55 %, the reducing rate was decreased from 20.82 % to 2.03 %, the K/S value was reduced from 0.69 to 0.02, and the particle sizes in dye system before and after high temperature treatment were stabilized below 0.5 µm. Besides, the dispersion effect was significantly improved because no obvious separation between dye and water was observed even if without the assistance of grinding process. In short, the multi-site sulfonation method proposed in this work could remarkably improve the performances of the lignin-based dye dispersants, which would facilitate the development of the dye dispersion and the high value utilization of lignin.

RESUMEN

To explore the role of lncRNA m6A methylation modification in aqueous humour (AH) of patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG). Patients with open-angle PXG under surgery from June 2021 to December 2021 were selected. Age- and gender-matched patients with age-related cataract (ARC) were chosen as control. Patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations. 0.05-0.1 ml AH were extracted during surgery for MeRIP-Seq and RNA-Seq. Joint analysis was used to screen lncRNAs with differential m6A methylation modification and expression. Online software tools were used to draw lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network (ceRNA). Expression of lncRNAs and mRNAs was confirmed using quantitative real-time PCR. A total of 4151 lncRNAs and 4386 associated m6A methylation modified peaks were identified in the PXG group. Similarly, 2490 lncRNAs and 2595 associated m6A methylation modified peaks were detected in the control. Compared to the ARC group, the PXG group had 234 hypermethylated and 402 hypomethylated m6A peaks, with statistically significant differences (| Fold Change (FC) |≥2, p < 0.05). Bioinformatic analysis revealed that these differentially methylated lncRNA enriched in extracellular matrix formation, tight adhesion, TGF- ß signalling pathway, AMPK signalling pathway, and MAPK signalling pathway. Joint analysis identified 10 lncRNAs with differential m6A methylation and expression simultaneously. Among them, the expression of ENST000000485383 and ROCK1 were confirmed downregulated in the PXG group by RT-qPCR. m6A methylation modification may affect the expression of lncRNA and participate in the pathogenesis of PXG through the ceRNA network. ENST000000485383-hsa miR592-ROCK1 May be a potential target pathway for further investigation in PXG m6A methylation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nonintestinal adenocarcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses (nonITAC) is a heterogeneous tumour that has rarely been reported in previous studies. We compared and analysed the symptoms, radiographic and pathological features, treatment methods, and prognosis of patients with low-grade (G1) and high-grade (G3) tumours. METHODS: This was a retrospective study included 22 patients with pathologically confirmed non-ITAC of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses who were treated between January 2008 and December 2021 at a single centre. Of these, 11 patients had G1 tumours, and 11 patients had G3 tumours. Clinicopathological features, treatment methods, and survival outcomes were analysed. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 48.5 months. Nasal congestion was the most common initial symptom, and the nasal cavity was the most frequently involved site. For G1 tumours, the main treatment was simple surgery, 1 and 3year overall survival (OS) rates were 100 and 88.9%, while the 1 and 3year local control (LC) rates were 100 and 100%, respectively. For G3 tumours, the main treatments were surgery combined with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy,1 and 3year OS rates were 72.7 and 72.7%, while the 1 and 3year LC rates were 100 and 90.91%, respectively. G3 tumours was associated with significantly shorter overall survival than G1 tumours (P = 0.035). Patients with stage III-IV showed shorter overall survival compared to stage I-II patients (P = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Non-ITAC of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses may frequently occur in the nasal cavity. The main treatment modality is surgery, supplemented by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Pathological grade and tumour stage were poor prognostic factors for the disease.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The supraclavicular artery island (SAI) flap is commonly used in the reconstruction of head and neck defects. However, the safety of SAI flaps for neck irradiated patient needs to be verified. To investigate the safety of using the SAI flap for patients who have undergone neck radiotherapy, as well as the risk factors for flap complications. Materials and Methods: Sixty-one patients (16 irradiated and 45 nonirradiated) with SAI flap-reconstructed head and neck defects were included, and relevant data were collected retrospectively. The gender, age, body mass index, presence of diabetes mellitus, preoperative albumin level, and flap size between irradiated and nonirradiated patients had no significant difference. Results: No significant difference was observed in the incidence of complications (total, mild, or severe) between the radiotherapy and nonradiotherapy groups. In univariate analysis, preoperative radiotherapy was not associated with postoperative complications of the SAI flap procedure (P = 1.00), while a low preoperative albumin level was a significant risk factor for postoperative complications (P < .05). Conclusions: Our data suggest that preoperative radiotherapy does not increase the risk of SAI flap postoperative complications compared with surgical reconstruction alone.

RESUMEN

Phenolic resin (PF) is considered a promising precursor of hard carbon (HC) for advanced-performance anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its facile designability and high residual carbon yield. However, understanding how the structure of PF precursors influences sodium storage in their derived HC remains a significant challenge. Herein, the microstructure of HC is controlled by the degree of cross-linking of resorcinol-benzaldehyde (RB) resin. We reveal that robust molecular cross-linking in RB resin induced by hydrothermal treatment promotes closed-pore formation in the derived HC. The mechanism is devised for the decomposition of a highly cross-linked RB three-dimensional network into randomly stacked short-range graphitic microcrystals during high-temperature carbonization, contributing to the abundant closed pores in the derived HC. In addition, the high cross-linking degree of RB resin endows its derived HC with a small-sized spherical morphology and large interlayer spacing, which improves the rate performance of HC. Consequently, the optimized hydrothermal treatment HC anode shows a higher specific capacity of 372.7 mAh g-1 and better rate performance than the HC anode without hydrothermal treatment (276.0 mAh g-1). This strategy can provide feasible molecular cross-linking engineering for the development of closed pores in PF-based HC toward enhanced sodium storage.

RESUMEN

Background: Segmentation of coronary arteries in computed tomography angiography (CTA) images plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary-related diseases. However, manually analyzing the large amount of data is time-consuming, and interpreting this data requires the prior knowledge and expertise of radiologists. Therefore, an automatic method is needed to separate coronary arteries from a given CTA dataset. Methods: Firstly, an anisotropic diffusion filter was employed to smooth the noise while preserving the vessel boundaries. The coronary skeleton was then extracted using a two-step process based on the intensity of the coronary. In the first step, the thick vessel skeleton was extracted by clustering, improved vesselness filtering and region growing, while in the second step, the thin vessel skeleton was extracted by the height ridge traversal method guided by the cylindrical model. Next, the vesselness measure, representing vessel a priori information, was incorporated into the local region active contour model based on the vessel geometry. Finally, the initial contour of the active contour model was generated using the coronary artery skeleton for effective segmentation of the three-dimensional (3D) coronary arteries. Results: Experimental results on chest CTA images show that the method is able to segment coronary arteries effectively with an average precision, recall and dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 86.64%, 91.26% and 79.13%, respectively, and has a good performance in thin vessel extraction. Conclusions: The method does not require manual selection of vessel seeds or setting of initial contours, and allows for the extraction of a successful coronary artery skeleton and eventual effective segmentation of the coronary arteries.

RESUMEN

A novel technique is introduced to predict the printer model used to produce a given document. Samples containing only a few letters printed under varying conditions (i.e., different printing modes, letter types, fonts) were collected to establish a dataset of 41 inkjet printer models from common manufacturers, such as HP, Canon, and Epson. Morphological features were analyzed by extraction of image features using several algorithms in a series of microscopic images and a Wilcoxon test was used to measure the significance of variations between printed samples. Significant differences between various printing conditions might post potential challenge to questioned document examination. Discriminant analysis and the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm were also employed for source printer prediction under varying printing condition on 30% images with the rest images as training dataset. The results of a validation experiment demonstrated that while quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) achieved an accuracy of 96.3%, a combination of KNN and QDA reached 98.6%. As such, this technique could aid in the forensic examination of printed documents.

RESUMEN

Closed pores play a crucial role in improving the low-voltage (<0.1 V) plateau capacity of hard carbon anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the lack of simple and effective closed-pore construction strategies, as well as the unclear closed-pore formation mechanism, has severely hindered the development of high plateau capacity hard carbon anodes. Herein, we present an effective closed-pore construction strategy by one-step pyrolysis of zinc gluconate (ZG) and elucidate the corresponding mechanism of closed-pore formation. The closed-pore formation mechanism during the pyrolysis of ZG mainly involves (i) the precipitation of ZnO nanoparticles and the ZnO etching on carbon under 1100 °C to generate open pores of 0.45-4 nm and (ii) the development of graphitic domains and the shrinkage of the partial open pores at 1100-1500 °C to convert the open pores to closed pores. Benefiting from the considerable closed-pore content and suitable microstructure, the optimized hard carbon achieves an ultrahigh reversible specific capacity of 481.5 mA h g-1 and an extraordinary plateau capacity of 389 mA h g-1 for use as the anode of SIBs. Additionally, some in situ and ex situ characterizations demonstrate that the high-voltage slope capacity and the low-voltage plateau capacity stem from the adsorption of Na+ at the defect sites and Na-cluster formation in closed pores, respectively.

RESUMEN

Acoustic communication plays important roles in the survival and reproduction of anurans. The perception and discrimination of conspecific sound signals of anurans were always affected by masking background noise. Previous studies suggested that some frogs evolved the high-frequency hearing to minimize the low-frequency noise. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the high-frequency hearing in anurans have not been well explored. Here, we cloned and obtained the coding regions of a high-frequency hearing-related gene (KCNQ4) from 11 representative anuran species and compared them with orthologous sequences from other four anurans. The sequence characteristics and evolutionary analyses suggested the highly conservation of the KCNQ4 gene in anurans, which supported their functional importance. Branch-specific analysis showed that KCNQ4 genes were under different evolutionary forces in anurans and most anuran lineages showed a generally strong purifying selection. Intriguingly, one significantly positively selected site was identified in the anuran KCNQ4 gene based on FEL model. Positive selection was also found along the common ancestor of Ranidae and Rhacophoridae as well as the ancestral O. tianmuii based on the branch-site analysis, and the positively selected sites identified were involved in or near the N-terminal ion transport and the potassium ion channel functional domain of the KCNQ4 genes. The present study revealed valuable information regarding the KCNQ4 genes in anurans and provided some new insights for the underpinnings of the high-frequency hearing in frogs.

RESUMEN

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) has emerged as a novel variant of K. pneumoniae, exhibiting distinct phenotypic and genotypic characteristics that confer increased virulence and pathogenicity. It is not only responsible for nosocomial infections but also community-acquired infections, including liver abscesses, endophthalmitis, and meningitis, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. HvKP has been reported all over the world, but it is mainly prevalent in Asia Pacific, especially China. Moreover, hvKP can acquire carbapenemase genes resulting in the emergence of carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (CR-hvKP), which possesses both high virulence and drug resistance capabilities. Consequently, CR-hvKP poses substantial challenges to infection control and presents serious threats to global public health. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive summary of the epidemiological characteristics, virulence factors, and mechanisms underlying carbapenem resistance in hvKP strains with the aim of offering valuable insights for practical prevention strategies as well as future research.

RESUMEN

A higher incidence of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is generally considered as a precancerous lesion in gastric cancer (GC). The aim of this study was to identify potential molecules involved in the pathogenesis of CAG in the Tibetan plateau, hoping to help the diagnosis and management of the disease. Atrophic and non-atrophic gastric mucosal tissue samples were collected from seven patients with chronic gastritis (CG). Differentially expressed lncRNAs, circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs between CAG and chronic non-atrophic gastritis (CNAG) groups were identified based on DNBSEQ-G99 RNA sequencing. Subsequently, competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks (lncRNA/circRNA-miRNA-mRNA networks) were constructed. Two datasets (GSE153224 and GSE163416), involving data from non-Tibetan plateau areas, were used to further screen out Tibetan plateau key mRNAs, followed by the common genes of Tibetan plateau key and ferroptosis-related mRNAs were also identified. Functional enrichment analyses were performed to investigate the biological functions of Tibetan plateau mRNAs in the CAG. A total of seven lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA relationship pairs and 424 circRNA-miRNA-mRNA relationship pairs were identified in this study. The relationship pairs of hsa_circ_0082984-hsa-miR-204-5p-CACNG8, lncRNA DRAIC/has_circ_0008561-hsa-miR-34a-5p-AR/GXYLT2, lncRNA GAS1RR/RGMB-AS1/hsa_circ_0008561-hsa-miR-3614-5p-TMEM216/SUSD5, and LINC00941/hsa_circ_0082984-hsa-miR-873-3p-TMC5 can be involved in the pathogenesis of CAG. Additionally, eight common genes of Tibetan plateau key and ferroptosis-related differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs) (CBS, SLC2A4, STAT3, ALOX15B, ATF3, IDO1, NOX4, and SOCS1) were identified in CAG. The common genes of Tibetan plateau key and ferroptosis-related DEmRNAs can play a role in the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This study identified important molecular biomarkers that may be involved in regulating the pathological mechanisms of CAG in the Tibetan plateau, which provides potential research directions for future research.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To characterize the fundus tessellated density (FTD) in highly myopic glaucoma (HMG) and high myopia (HM) for discovering early signs and diagnostic markers. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included hospital in-patients with HM (133 eyes) and HMG (73 eyes) with an axial length ≥26 mm at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. Using deep learning, FTD was quantified as the average exposed choroid area per unit area on fundus photographs in the global, macular, and disc regions. FTD-associated factors were assessed using partial correlation. Diagnostic efficacy was analyzed using the area under the curve (AUC). Results: HMG patients had lower global (0.20 ± 0.12 versus 0.36 ± 0.09) and macular FTD (0.25 ± 0.14 vs. 0.40 ± 0.09) but larger disc FTD (0.24 ± 0.11 vs. 0.19 ± 0.07) than HM patients in the tessellated fundus (all P < 0.001). In the macular region, nasal FTD was lowest in the HM (0.26 ± 0.13) but highest in the HMG (0.32 ± 0.13) compared with the superior, inferior, and temporal subregions (all P < 0.05). A fundus with a macular region nasal/temporal (NT) FTD ratio > 0.96 (AUC = 0.909) was 15.7 times more indicative of HMG than HM. A higher macular region NT ratio with a lower horizontal parapapillary atrophy/disc ratio indicated a higher possibility of HMG than HM (AUC = 0.932). Conclusions: FTD differs in degree and distribution between HMG and HM. A higher macular NT alone or with a lower horizontal parapapillary atrophy/disc ratio may help differentiate HMG. Translational Relevance: Deep learning-based FTD measurement could potentially assist glaucoma diagnosis in HM.

RESUMEN

Primary cutaneous aspergillosis (PCA) is a rare opportunistic infection caused by Aspergillus that can be life-threatening. PCA is mainly reported in immunocompromised hosts such as patients with AIDS, those with hematologic malignancy, or infants with occlusive dressings. However, no study has previously reported PCA associated with toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). This study reports four cases of TEN complicated with PCA, presenting with discrete gray or black spots over newly formed epithelia. Risk factors of PCA in patients with TEN include host factors, iatrogenic factors, indoor environment, and wound care. Two of the four cases eventually died, highlighting the importance of further exploring PCA in patients with TEN.

RESUMEN

Specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) are key leaf functional traits commonly used to reflect tree resource utilization strategies and predict forest ecosystem responses to environmental changes. Previous research on tree resource utilization strategies (SLA and LDMC) primarily focused on the species level within limited spatial scales, making it crucial to quantify the spatial variability and driving factors of these strategies. Whether there are discrepancies in resource utilization strategies between trees in planted and natural forests, and the dominant factors and mechanisms influencing them, remain unclear. This study, based on field surveys and the literature from 2008 to 2020 covering 263 planted and 434 natural forests in China, using generalized additive models (GAMs) and structural equation models (SEMs), analyzes the spatial differences and dominant factors in tree resource utilization strategies between planted and natural forests. The results show that the SLA of planted forests is significantly higher than that of natural forests (p < 0.01), and LDMC is significantly lower (p < 0.0001), indicating a "faster investment-return" resource utilization strategy. As the mean annual high temperature (MAHT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) steadily rise, trees have adapted their resource utilization strategies, transitioning from a "conservative" survival tactic to a "rapid investment-return" model. Compared to natural forests, planted forest trees exhibit stronger environmental plasticity and greater variability with forest age in their resource utilization strategies. Overall, forest age is the dominant factor influencing resource utilization strategies in both planted and natural forests, having a far greater direct impact than climatic factors (temperature, precipitation, and sunlight) and soil nutrient factors. Additionally, as forest age increases, both planted and natural forests show an increase in SLA and a decrease in LDMC, indicating a gradual shift towards more efficient resource utilization strategies.

RESUMEN

Intrinsic polymer room-temperature phosphorescence (IPRTP) materials have attracted considerable attention for application in flexible electronics, information encryption, lighting displays, and other fields due to their excellent processabilities and luminescence properties. However, achieving multicolor long-lived luminescence, particularly white afterglow, in undoped polymers is challenging. Herein, we propose a strategy of covalently coupling different conjugated chromophores with poly(acrylic acid (AA)-AA-N-succinimide ester) (PAA-NHS) by a simple and rapid one-pot reaction to obtain pure polymers with long-lived RTPs of various colors. Among these polymers, the highest phosphorescence quantum yield of PAPHE reaches 14.7%. Furthermore, the afterglow colors of polymers can be modulated from blue to red by introducing three chromophores into them. Importantly, the acquired polymer TPAP-514 exhibits a white afterglow at room temperature with the chromaticity coordinates (0.33, 0.33) when the ratio of chromophores reaches a suitable value owing to the three-primary-color mechanism. Systematic studies prove that the emission comes from the superposition of different triplet excited states of the three components. Moreover, the potential applications of the obtained polymers in light-emitting diodes and dynamic anti-counterfeiting are explored. The proposed strategy provides a new idea for constructing intrinsic polymers with diverse white-light emission RTPs.

RESUMEN

The carbon nanomaterials are usually used to improve the electrical conductivity and stability of silicon (Si) anodes for lithium-ion batteries. However, the Si-based composites containing carbon nanomaterials generally show large specific surface area, leading to severe side reactions that generate large amounts of solid electrolyte interphase films. Herein, we embedded graphene oxide (GO) and silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) uniformly in pitch matrix by solvent dispersion. The internally doped GO reduces the exposed surface and improves the electrical conductivity of the composite. Meanwhile, the multi-interface structures are constructed inside to limit the domains of Si NPs and improve the structural stability of the material. When evaluated as anodes, the Si/graphene/pitch-based carbon composite anode exhibits the outstanding electrochemical properties, delivering a reversible capacity of 820.8 mAh/g at 50 mA g-1, as well as a capacity retention of 93.6 % after 1000 cycles at 2 A/g. In addition, when assembled with the LiFePO4 cathode, the full cell exhibits an impressive capacity retention of 95 % after 100 cycles at 85 mA g-1. This work provides a valuable design concept for the development of Si/carbon anodes.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Microvascular invasion (MVI) is a major unfavorable prognostic factor for intrahepatic metastasis and postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the intervention and preoperative prediction for MVI remain clinical challenges due to the absent precise mechanism and molecular marker(s). Herein, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying vascular invasion that can be applied to clinical intervention for MVI in HCC. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: The histopathologic characteristics of clinical MVI+/HCC specimens were analyzed using multiplex immunofluorescence staining. The liver orthotopic xenograft mouse model and mechanistic experiments on human patient-derived HCC cell lines, including coculture modeling, RNA-sequencing, and proteomic analysis, were used to investigate MVI-related genes and mechanisms. RESULTS: IQGAP3 overexpression was correlated significantly with MVI status and reduced survival in HCC. Upregulation of IQGAP3 promoted MVI+-HCC cells to adopt an infiltrative vessel co-optive growth pattern and accessed blood capillaries by inducing detachment of activated hepatic stellate cells (HSC) from the endothelium. Mechanically, IQGAP3 overexpression contributed to HCC vascular invasion via a dual mechanism, in which IQGAP3 induced HSC activation and disruption of the HSC-endothelial interaction via upregulation of multiple cytokines and enhanced the trans-endothelial migration of MVI+-HCC cells by remodeling the cytoskeleton by sustaining GTPase Rac1 activity. Importantly, systemic delivery of IQGAP3-targeting small-interfering RNA nanoparticles disrupted the infiltrative vessel co-optive growth pattern and reduced the MVI of HCC. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed a plausible mechanism underlying IQGAP3-mediated microvascular invasion in HCC, and provided a potential target to develop therapeutic strategies to treat HCC with MVI.

RESUMEN

In the realm of federated learning (FL), the conventional dual-layered architecture, comprising a central parameter server and peripheral devices, often encounters challenges due to its significant reliance on the central server for communication and security. This dependence becomes particularly problematic in scenarios involving potential malfunctions of devices and servers. While existing device-edge-cloud hierarchical FL (HFL) models alleviate some dependence on central servers and reduce communication overheads, they primarily focus on load balancing within edge computing networks and fall short of achieving complete decentralization and edge-centric model aggregation. Addressing these limitations, we introduce the multicenter HFL (MCHFL) framework. This innovative framework replaces the traditional single central server architecture with a distributed network of robust global aggregation centers located at the edge, inherently enhancing fault tolerance crucial for maintaining operational integrity amidst edge network disruptions. Our comprehensive experiments with the MNIST, FashionMNIST, and CIFAR-10 datasets demonstrate the MCHFL's superior performance. Notably, even under high paralysis ratios of up to 50%, the MCHFL maintains high accuracy levels, with maximum accuracy reductions of only 2.60%, 5.12%, and 16.73% on these datasets, respectively. This performance significantly surpasses the notable accuracy declines observed in traditional single-center models under similar conditions. To the best of our knowledge, the MCHFL is the first edge multicenter FL framework with theoretical underpinnings. Our extensive experimental results across various datasets validate the MCHFL's effectiveness, showcasing its higher accuracy, faster convergence speed, and stronger robustness compared to single-center models, thereby establishing it as a pioneering paradigm in edge multicenter FL.
