RESUMEN

Sustainable photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials exhibit great potential but are difficult to obtain. Here, we develop photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials by covalently attaching lignin to polylactic acid, where lignin and polylactic acid are the chromophore and matrix, respectively. Initially the phosphorescence of the lignin is quenched by residual O2. However, the phosphorescence is switched on when the residual oxygen is consumed by the triplet excitons of lignin under continuous UV light irradiation. As such, the lifetime increases from 3.0 ms to 221.1 ms after 20 s of UV activation. Interestingly, the phosphorescence is quenched again after being kept under an atmosphere of air for 2 h in the absence of UV irradiation due to the diffusion of oxygen into the materials. Using these properties, as-developed material is successfully used as a smart anti-counterfeiting logo for a medicine bottle and for information recording.

Protein amyloid fibrillation is linked to a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases. Protein oligomer is an intermediate substance in the process of fibrillation, which is neurotoxic and formed by the aggregation of protein molecules under physiological stress. Early detection of protein oligomers could make timely intervention of protein fibrillation related diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to develop efficient inhibitors and probes for monitoring amyloid fibril formation. In this study, we developed a novel amyloid inhibitor quinoline yellow (QY), which was proved to be effective in inhibiting insulin protein fibrillation as demonstrated by fluorescence, morphology characterization and circular dichroism. When QY binds to insulin, it exerts inhibitory effects on the nucleation process and effectively impedes the formation of fibrillar fibrils. In addition, we present the application of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) as an extremely sensitive technique for identifying amyloid oligomers. The investigation employed the probe QY, which demonstrated a linear reaction for identifying oligomers in the concentration range of 1.0-58.0 µM. Impressively, it showcased an exceptionally sensitive detection threshold of 0.2 µM. And also illustrating the binding sites and interaction mechanisms between small molecules of QY and insulin by SERS. The aforementioned methodology was also employed for the identification of insulin oligomers in human serum samples. Thereby, the proposed approach presenting a promising avenue with extensive implications in the realms of pharmaceutical exploration and disease diagnosis.

A fundamental challenge in artificial superhydrophobic papers is their poor resistance to mechanical abrasion, which limits their practical application in different fields. Herein, a robust and multifunctional superhydrophobic paper is successfully fabricated via a facile spraying method by combining silver nanowires and fluorinated titania nanoparticles through a common paper sizing agent (alkyl ketene dimer) onto paper. It is shown that the surface of the paper-based material presents a three-dimensional network structure due to the cross-linking of silver nanowires with a high aspect ratio. Further hydrophilic and hydrophobic performance test results show that it exhibits exceptional water repellency, with a desirable static contact angle of 165° and roll-off angle of 6.2°. The superhydrophobic paper showcases excellent mechanical durability and maintains its superhydrophobicity even after enduring 130 linear sandpaper abrasion cycles or high-velocity water jetting impact benefited from interfacial van der Waals and hydrogen bonding. Simultaneously, the robust superhydrophobic surface can effectively prevent the penetration of acid or alkali solutions, as well as UV light, resulting in excellent chemical stability. Additionally, the superhydrophobic paper offers supplementary features such as self-cleaning, electrical conductivity, and antibacterial capability. Further development of this strategy paves a way toward next-generation superhydrophobic paper composed of nanostructures and characterized by multiple (or additional) functionalities.

Myopia represents a widespread global public health concern influenced by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. The prevailing theory explaining myopia development revolves around scleral extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, characterized by diminished Type I collagen (Col-1) synthesis and increased degradation, resulting in scleral thinning and eye axis elongation. Existing studies underscore the pivotal role of scleral hypoxia in myopic scleral remodeling. This study investigates the peroxidase-like activity and catalytic performance of octahedral Palladium (Pd) nanocrystals, recognized as nanozymes with antioxidative properties. We explore their potential in reducing oxidative stress and alleviating hypoxia in human scleral fibroblasts (HSF) and examine the associated molecular mechanisms. Our results demonstrate the significant peroxidase-like activity of Pd nanocrystals. Furthermore, we observe a substantial reduction in oxidative stress in HSF under hypoxia, mitigating cellular damage. These effects are linked to alterations in Nrf-2/Ho-1 expression, a pathway associated with hypoxic stress. Importantly, our findings indicate that Pd nanocrystals contribute to attenuated scleral matrix remodeling in myopic guinea pigs, effectively slowing myopia progression. This supports the hypothesis that Pd nanocrystals regulate myopia development by controlling oxidative stress associated with hypoxia. Based on these results, we propose that Pd nanocrystals represent a novel and potential treatment avenue for myopia through the modulation of scleral matrix remodeling. This study introduces innovative ideas and directions for the treatment and prevention of myopia.

Stout beer was selected as the research object to screen angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides. The peptide sequences of stout beer were identified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry with de novo, and 41 peptides were identified with high confidence. Peptide Ranker was used to score the biological activity and six peptides with a score ≥ 0.5 were screened to predict their potential ACE inhibitory (ACEI) activity. The toxicity, hydrophilicity, absorption, and excretion of these peptides were predicted. In addition, molecular docking between the peptides and ACE revealed a significant property of the peptide DLGGFFGFQR. Furthermore, molecular docking conformation and molecular dynamics simulation revealed that DLGGFFGFQR could be tightly bound to ACE through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. Lastly, the ACEI activity of DLGGFFGFQR was confirmed using in vitro evaluation and the IC50 value was determined to be 24.45 µM.

Background: Pulmonary invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma (IMA) is a rare subtype of lung cancer which is easily misdiagnosed as inflammatory nodules, tuberculosis, pulmonary diffuse lesions, or hamartomas due to the lack of clinical specificity. This study aims to identify the pathological and imaging characteristics of IMA, which will favor to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted by enrolling patients histopathologically diagnosed with pulmonary IMA in the current study between January 2014 and December 2021. The clinical pathological and radiological data were collected for analysis to evaluate the radiological patterns and pathological and molecular characteristics of IMA. Results: A total of 136 patients were included in the study, of whom 58 were male and 78 were female. The patients had an average age of 63.0±9.7 years. The tumors were classified into the following three pathological types: pure mucinous (76 cases) featured by only mucinous cells observed under the microscope; mixed mucinous (23 cases) featured as an attached-wall, papillary, acinar, and solid tumor cells with more than 10% mucinous cells.; and mucinous-absent (29 cases) featured with the absence of mucous cells, but still can detect more than 10% of mucin expresses. In terms of the morphological classification based on the CT scans, 88 (64.7%) cases were identified as the nodular type, 31 (22.8%) as the inflammatory type, 15 (11.1%) as the mass-like type, and two (1.5%) as the diffuse type. For the molecular features, patients afflicted with IMA showed much lower levels of thyroid transcription factor-1 (15%) than those with usual adenocarcinoma (over 80%). However, cytokeratin 20 was more common in IMA (50%) than the usual adenocarcinoma (about 5%). The K-RAS mutation was prevalent in 75% of IMA, which contrasted sharply to its occurrence in a mere 15% of the usual adenocarcinoma. Epidermal growth factor receptor mutations were rarer in IMA (less than 5%) than the usual adenocarcinoma (about 50%). Conclusions: The pathological and imaging features enrich our understanding of the disease's heterogeneity, which will contribute to more personalized diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The photocatalytic conversion of lignin into value-added chemicals especially those functionalized molecules represent one of the most important strategies for sustainable and environmental-friendly development. Cleavage of C-C bonds in lignin under mild photocatalytic conditions for refining lignin into useful molecules is meaningful but challenging. Meanwhile, the assembly of diverse functional groups into active lignin fragments during the depolymerization is of great challenging. Herein, using cheap iron catalysts under visible light irradiation, the highly selective and efficient cleavage of Cα-Cß bond in lignin is realized via ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes. The subsequent divergent functionalization of generated lignin fragment-based radical intermediates enables an efficient formation of diverse functionalized molecules. This method is also effective for cleavage of Cα-Cß bond in native lignin, yielding two identified benzaldehyde monomers in a total yield of 8.7 wt%.

Design and intelligent use renewable natural bioenergy is an important challenge. Electric microorganism-based materials are being serve as an important part of bioenergy devices for energy release and collection, calling for suitable skeleton materials to anchor live microbes. Herein we verified the feasibility of constructing bio-abiotic hybrid living materials based on the combination of gelatin, Li-ions and exoelectrogenic bacteria Shewanella oneidensis manganese-reducing-1 (MR-1). The gelatin-based mesh contains abundant pores, allowing microbes to dock and small molecules to diffuse. The hybrid materials hold plentiful electronegative groups, which effectively anchor Li-ions and facilitate their transition. Moreover, the electrochemical characteristics of the materials can be modulated through changing the ratios of gelatin, bacteria and Li-ions. Based on the gelatin-Li-ion-microorganism hybrid materials, a bifunctional device was fabricated, which could play dual roles alternatively, generation of electricity as a microbial fuel cell and energy storage as a pseudocapacitor. The capacitance and the maximum voltage output of the device reaches 68 F g-1 and 0.67 V, respectively. This system is a new platform and fresh start to fabricate bio-abiotic living materials for microbial electron storage and transfer. We expect the setup will extend to other living systems and devices for synthetic biological energy conversion.

BACKGROUND: Given the established association between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment was mainly in the older and oldest-old population or people with relatively limited education, this study extends the investigation to community-dwelling middle-to-old age adults in urban communities, emphasizing the need for preventive intervention for muscle health and healthy longevity. METHODS: Data of 712 participants from the Gan-Dau Healthy Longevity Plan were retrieved for analysis, and all participants were stratified by age (50-64, 65-74 and 75+ years old). Possible sarcopenia was defined by 2019 consensus report of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). This study used four neuropsychological tests for analysis, i.e., Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE), California Verbal Learning Test II (CVLT-SF), Digital Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) and Verbal fluency (VF) for global and domain-specific cognitive function. Multivariate generalized linear models (GLMs) were employed to investigate the associations between possible sarcopenia and cognitive function in each age-specific groups. RESULTS: The prevalence of possible sarcopenia increased with age, with 31.8 %, 37.7 %, and 55.6 % in participants aged 5064, 65-74 and, 75+ years, respectively. On the other hand, cognitive performance declined with age. In particular, among participants aged 75+ years with possible sarcopenia, their cognitive performance were poorer than robust counterparts, including MMSE (26.6 [3.4] vs. 27.4 [2.6]), CVTL-SF (total score: 21.5 [5.4] vs. 23.8 [5.5]; 30-second delayed recall: 6.0 [1.7] vs. 6.5 [1.6]), DSST (32.8 [14.3] vs. 41.3 [18.7]), and VF (12.8 [5.1] vs. 14.8 [4.9]). Multivariate generalized linear model indicated that possible sarcopenia was associated with lower MMSE (ß: -0.70, p = 0.014) and lower DSST (ß: -7.00, p = 0.010) in those aged 50-64 years. Moreover, possible sarcopenia was associated with lower CVLT-SF (total score ß:-1.90, p = 0.028), lower DSST (ß: -6.45, p < 0.001), and lower VF (ß: -1.64, p=0.026) in 75+ years group. CONCLUSIONS: An association exists between possible sarcopenia and cognitive impairment, encompassing global cognition, delayed memory, verbal fluency, and executive function, among community-dwelling adults of mid-to-old age. Future research is warranted to explore the temporal alterations in this association and the potential effects of interventions aimed at fostering healthy longevity.

The landscape of prostate cancer care has rapidly evolved. We have transitioned from the use of conventional imaging, radical surgeries, and single-agent androgen deprivation therapy to an era of advanced imaging, precision diagnostics, genomics, and targeted treatment options. Concurrently, the emergence of large language models (LLMs) has dramatically transformed the paradigm for artificial intelligence (AI). This convergence of advancements in prostate cancer management and AI provides a compelling rationale to comprehensively review the current state of AI applications in prostate cancer care. Here, we review the advancements in AI-driven applications across the continuum of the journey of a patient with prostate cancer from early interception to survivorship care. We subsequently discuss the role of AI in prostate cancer drug discovery, clinical trials, and clinical practice guidelines. In the localized disease setting, deep learning models demonstrated impressive performance in detecting and grading prostate cancer using imaging and pathology data. For biochemically recurrent diseases, machine learning approaches are being tested for improved risk stratification and treatment decisions. In advanced prostate cancer, deep learning can potentially improve prognostication and assist in clinical decision making. Furthermore, LLMs are poised to revolutionize information summarization and extraction, clinical trial design and operations, drug development, evidence synthesis, and clinical practice guidelines. Synergistic integration of multimodal data integration and human-AI integration are emerging as a key strategy to unlock the full potential of AI in prostate cancer care.

Background: Influenza is the first infectious disease that implements global monitoring and is one of the major public health issues in the world. Air pollutants have become an important global public health issue, in recent years, and much epidemiological and clinical evidence has shown that air pollutants are associated with respiratory diseases. Methods: We comprehensively searched articles published up to 15 November 2022 in PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Database of Chinese sci-tech periodicals, and Wanfang Database. The search strategies were based on keyword combinations related to influenza and air pollutants. The air pollutants included particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3). Meta-analysis was performed using the R programming language (R4.2.1). Results: A total of 2926 records were identified and 1220 duplicates were excluded. Finally, 19 studies were included in the meta-analysis according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. We observed a significant association between partial air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, PM10 and SO2) and the incidence risk of influenza. The RRs were 1.0221 (95% CI: 1.0093~1.0352), 1.0395 (95% CI: 1.0131~1.0666), 1.007 (95% CI: 1.0009~1.0132), and 1.0352 (95% CI. 1.0076~1.0635), respectively. However, there was no significant relationship between CO and O3 exposure and influenza, and the RRs were 1.2272 (95% CI: 0.9253~1.6275) and 1.0045 (95% CI: 0.9930~1.0160), respectively. Conclusion: Exposure to PM2.5, NO2, PM10, and SO2 was significantly associated with influenza, which may be risk factors for influenza. The association of CO and O3 with influenza needs further investigation.

Meniscus pathologies (damage, extrusion) and synovitis are associated with knee osteoarthritis (KOA); however, whether synovitis mediates the relationship between meniscus pathologies and KOA radiographic progression remains unclear. We conducted an observational study in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) cohort, with a 48-month follow-up. Meniscus pathology and synovitis were measured by MRI osteoarthritis knee score (MOAKS) at baseline and 24 months, and a comprehensive synovitis score was calculated using effusion and Hoffa synovitis scores. The knee osteoarthritis radiographic progression was considered that Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade and joint space narrowing (JSN) grade at 48 months were increased compared to those at baseline. This study included a total of 589 participants, with KL grades mainly being KL1 (26.5%), KL2 (34.1%), and KL3 (30.2%) at baseline, while JSN grades were mostly 0 at baseline. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between meniscus pathology, synovitis, and KOA progression. Mediation analysis was used to evaluate the mediation effect of synovitis. The average age of the participants was 61 years old, 62% of which were female. The medial meniscus extrusion was longitudinally correlated with the progression of KL (odds ratio [OR]: 2.271, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.412-3.694) and medial JSN (OR: 3.211, 95% CI: 2.040-5.054). Additionally, the longitudinal correlation between medial meniscus damage and progression of KOA (OR: 1.853, 95% CI: 1.177-2.941) and medial JSN (OR: 1.655, 95% CI: 1.053-2.602) was significant. Synovitis was found to mediate the relationship between medial meniscus extrusion and KL and medial JSN progression at baseline (ß: 0.029, 95% CI: 0.010-0.053; ß: 0.022, 95% CI: 0.005-0.046) and beyond 24 months (ß: 0.039, 95% CI: 0.016-0.068; ß: 0.047, 95% CI: 0.020-0.078). However, we did not find evidence of synovitis mediating the relationship between meniscal damage and KOA progression. Synovitis mediates the relationship between medial meniscus extrusion (rather than meniscus damage) and KOA progression.

In industrial production, workers need to wear safety helmets at all times. However, due to different lighting, viewing angles, and the tendency of people to block each other, the precision of target detection is not high enough. Aiming at this problem, a real-time detection of helmets was achieved by improving the YOLOv5 algorithm. This algorithm introduces the lightweight network structure FasterNet, which uses partial convolution as the main operator to reduce the amount of calculations and parameters of the network; the boundary regression loss function Wise-IoU loss function with a dynamic focusing mechanism replaces the original loss function in YOLOv5; finally, the CBAM attention mechanism is introduced to obtain global context information and improve the detection ability of small targets. The experimental results show that the parameters of the improved YOLOv5 model are reduced by 12.68%, the computational amount is reduced by 10.8%, the mAP is increased from 88.3 to 92.3%, and the inference time is reduced by 81.5%, which is better than the performance of the original model and can detect helmet wearing effectively and in real time.

Objective: To explore the clinical benefits of 125I seed implantation for iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 36 patients with RAIR-DTC who underwent radioactive 125I seed implantation from January 2015 to February 2022, involving 73 lesions. Prescription dose: 80~120 Gy. All cases were followed up at 1, 3, and 5 months postoperatively to monitor changes in tumor size, serum thyroglobulin (Tg), and serum anti-thyroglobulin antibody levels in thyrotropin-inhibited states, pain scores, and postoperative adverse reactions. The data were processed and analyzed using IBM SPSS 26.0. LER (Local Effective Rate) and LCR (Local Control Rate) were expressed as n (%), tumor diameter, Tg, and pain scores were represented as Median (Q1, Q3). Pairwise comparisons were conducted using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and a p-value of less than 0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: Tumor size was significantly reduced after treatment (all P < 0.001): tumor length diameters were 32.67 (17.70, 45.72) mm, 27.45 (12.30, 39.98) mm, 20.70 (11.98, 37.58) mm, and 20.39 (10.56, 33.20) mm in the preoperative, 1-, 3-, and 5-months postoperative periods, respectively. Additionally, two consecutive post-treatment results were more minor and statistically significant than the previous results (P < 0.001). The LER at 1-, 3-, and 5-months post-surgery was 23.73%, 38.98%, and 52.54%, respectively, while the LCR at the same time points was 98.31%, 96.61%, and 94.92%, respectively. Patients' serum Tg levels decreased significantly after surgery. (P < 0.001). Serum Tg levels were measured before surgery and 1-, 3-, and 5-months post-surgery. The results showed that serum Tg levels were 249.45 (79.39, 4718.75) ng/ml, 193.40 (44.53, 2829.00) ng/ml, 192.10 (25.58, 1758.00) ng/ml, and 136.25 (16.57, 1553.25) ng/ml, respectively. Two consecutive post-treatment results were more minor and statistically significant than the previous results (P < 0.001). The patients' pain symptoms were significantly relieved after 125I brachytherapy (P < 0.001). The pain scores before 125I seed implantation and at 1, 3, and 5 months after the operation were 5.00 (4.00, 6.00), 3.00 (2.25, 4.00), 2.00 (2.00, 3.00), and 2.00 (1.00, 3.00), respectively. Conclusion: Most lesions treated with 125I seed implantation in RAIR-DTC patients showed shrinkage and improved pain symptoms. Sustainable carbon dots based on cellulose, particularly carboxymethyl cellulose carbon dots (CMCCDs), were confined in an inorganic network resulting in CMCCDs@SiO2. This resulted in a material exhibiting long afterglow covering a time frame of several seconds also under air. Temperature-dependent emission spectra gave information on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) while photocurrent experiments provided a deeper understanding of charge availability in the dark period, and therefore, its availability on the photocatalyst surface. The photo-ATRP initiator, ethyl α-bromophenylacetate (EBPA), quenched the emission from the millisecond to the nanosecond time frame indicating participation of the triplet state in photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Both free radical and controlled radical polymerization based on photo-ATRP protocol worked successfully. Metal-free photo-ATRP resulted in chain extendable macroinitiators based on a reductive mechanism with either MMA or in combination with styrene. Addition of 9 ppm Cu2+ resulted in Mw/Mn of 1.4 while an increase to 72 ppm improved uniformity of the polymers; that is Mw/Mn=1.03. Complementary experiments with kerria laca carbon dots confined materials, namely KCDs@SiO2, provided similar results. Deposition of Cu2+ (9 ppm) on the photocatalyst surface explains better uniformity of the polymers formed in the ATRP protocol.

Objective To establish a model for predicting the growth of pulmonary ground-glass nodules (GGN) based on the clinical visualization parameters extracted by the 3D reconstruction technique and to verify the prediction performance of the model. Methods A retrospective analysis was carried out for 354 cases of pulmonary GGN followed up regularly in the outpatient of pulmonary nodules in Zhoushan Hospital of Zhejiang Province from March 2015 to December 2022.The semi-automatic segmentation method of 3D Slicer was employed to extract the quantitative imaging features of nodules.According to the follow-up results,the nodules were classified into a resting group and a growing group.Furthermore,the nodules were classified into a training set and a test set by the simple random method at a ratio of 7∶3.Clinical and imaging parameters were used to establish a prediction model,and the prediction performance of the model was tested on the validation set. Results A total of 119 males and 235 females were included,with a median age of 55.0 (47.0,63.0) years and the mean follow-up of (48.4±16.3) months.There were 247 cases in the training set and 107 cases in the test set.The binary Logistic regression analysis showed that age (95%CI=1.010-1.092,P=0.015) and mass (95%CI=1.002-1.067,P=0.035) were independent predictors of nodular growth.The mass (M) of nodules was calculated according to the formula M=V×(CTmean+1000)×0.001 (where V is the volume,V=3/4πR3,R:radius).Therefore,the logit prediction model was established as ln[P/(1-P)]=-1.300+0.043×age+0.257×two-dimensional diameter+0.007×CTmean.The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test was performed to test the fitting degree of the model for the measured data in the validation set (χ2=4.515,P=0.808).The check plot was established for the prediction model,which showed the area under receiver-operating characteristic curve being 0.702. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that patient age and nodule mass are independent risk factors for promoting the growth of pulmonary GGN.A model for predicting the growth possibility of GGN is established and evaluated,which provides a basis for the formulation of GGN management strategies.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the efficacy of peripheral add multifocal soft contact lenses (SCLs) (excluding bifocal SCLs) with single vision contact lenses or spectacles in controlling myopia progression. METHOD: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in the Pubmed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases until October 2023. The literature was thoroughly screened based on predetermined eligibility criteria. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for dichotomous data and weighted mean differences (WMD) for continuous data. RESULTS: A total of 11 articles comprising 787 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Our pooled results demonstrated that the peripheral add multifocal SCLs groups exhibited significantly reduced refraction progression (MD = 0.20; 95%CI, 0.14 ∼ 0.27; P<0.001) and less axial length elongation (MD=-0.08; 95%CI, -0.09∼-0.08; P<0.001) compared to the control group. There was no significant difference in high-contrast logMAR distance visual acuity between the two groups (MD = 0.01; 95%CI, -0.00 ∼ 0.02; P = 0.19). However, the group using single-vision lenses had better low-contrast logMAR distance visual acuity compared to those using peripheral add multifocal SCLs (MD = 0.06; 95%CI, 0.02 ∼ 0.10; P = 0.004). Data synthesis using a random-effects model indicated an incidence of contact lens-related adverse events of 0.065 (95%CI, 0.048 ∼ 0.083). CONCLUSIONS: The present meta-analysis signifies that peripheral defocus modifying contact lenses are effective in slowing down the progression of myopia and reducing axial elongation.

Solar energy conversion technologies, particularly solar-driven photothermal conversion, are both clean and manageable. Although much progress has been made in designing solar-driven photothermal materials, significant challenges remain, not least the photobleaching of organic dyes. To tackle these issues, micro-carbonized polysaccharide chains, with carbon dots (CDs) suspended from the chains, are conceived, just like grapes or tomatoes hanging from a vine. Carbonization of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) produces just such a structure (termed CMC-g-CDs), which is used to produce an ultra-stable, robust, and efficient solar-thermal film by interfacial interactions within the CMC-g-CDs. The introduction of the CDs into the matrix of the photothermal material effectively avoided the problem of photobleaching. Manipulating the interfacial interactions (such as electrostatic interactions, van der Waals interactions, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding) between the CDs and the polymer chains markedly enhances the mechanical properties of the photothermal film. The CMC-g-CDs are complexed with Fe3+ to eliminate leakage of the photothermal reagent from the matrix and to solve the problem of poor water resistance. The resulting film (CMC-g-CDs-Fe) has excellent prospects for practical application as a photothermal film.

Sustainable carbon dots comprising surficial oxime ester groups following homolytic bond cleavage exhibit potential as photoinitiators for traditional free radical photopolymerization. Carbon dots were made following a solvothermal procedure from sustainable furfural available from lignocellulose. Surficial aldehyde moieties reacted with hydroxylamine to the respective oxime while reaction with benzoyl chloride resulted in a biobased Type I photoinitiator comprising sustainable carbon dot (CD-PI). Photoinitiating ability was compared with the traditional photoinitiator (PI) ethyl (2,4,6-trimethyl benzoyl) phenyl phosphinate (TPO-L) by real-time FTIR with UV exposure at 365 nm. Photopolymer composition based on a mixture of urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA) resulted in a similar final conversion of about 70 % using either CD-PI or TPO-L. Nevertheless, it appeared homogeneous in the case of compositions processed with CD-PI, while those made with TPO-L were heterogeneous as shown by two glass transition temperatures. Moreover, the migration rate of CD-PI in the cured samples was lower in comparison with those samples using TPO-L as PI.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of markers of inflammation to identify the solid or micropapillary components of stage IA lung adenocarcinoma and their effects on prognosis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of clinicopathologic data from 654 patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma collected between 2013 and 2019. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of these components, and we also evaluated the relationship between markers of inflammation and recurrence. RESULTS: Micropapillary-positive participants had high preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios. There were no significant differences in the levels of markers of systemic inflammation between the participants with or without a solid component. Multivariate analysis showed that preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (odds ratio [OR] = 2.094; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.668-2.628), tumor size (OR = 1.386; 95% CI, 1.044-1.842), and carcinoembryonic antigen concentration (OR = 1.067; 95% CI, 1.017-1.119) were independent predictors of a micropapillary component. There were no significant correlations between markers of systemic inflammation and the recurrence of stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio independently predicts a micropapillary component of stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. Therefore, the potential use of preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in the optimization of surgical strategies for the treatment of stage IA lung adenocarcinoma should be further studied.
