RESUMEN

Owing to the abundant resources of potassium resources, potassium ion batteries (PIBs) hold great potential in various energy storage devices. However, the poor lifespan of PIBs anodes limit their merchant applications. The exploitation of anode materials with high performance is one of the critical factors to the development of PIBs. Metallic Sn-, Sb-, and Bi-based materials, show promising future thanks to their high theoretical capacities and safe working voltage. However, the rapid capacity decay caused by the large K+ is still a pivotal challenge. In this review, recent progresses on alloying anodes were summarized. Schemes, such as ultra-small nanoparticles, hetero-element doping, and electrolyte optimization are effective strategies to improve their electrochemical properties. This review provides an outlook on the nanostructures and their synthesis methods for the alloying-type materials, and will stimulate their intensive study for practical application in the near future.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Medical schools prepare undergraduates for clinical practice. Clinical competencies build up gradually and continuously. Existing literature suggests that new graduates are often unprepared for independent practice. This study aims to validate a Chinese version of a Preparedness for Hospital Practice Questionnaire (PHPQ) in a Taiwanese undergraduate cohort. METHODS: The original eight-domain English version PHPQ was translated into Chinese and back-translated for expert panel discussion. The eight domains encompass interpersonal skills, confidence, collaboration, management, science, prevention, holistic care, and self-directed learning. Reliability and validity were checked by Cronbach's alpha and by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), respectively. Participants were divided into higher and lower preparedness groups according to PHPQ results, and compared by age, sex, professional identity, and perception of educational environment. RESULTS: A total of 129 undergraduate medical students (55% males) participated in the study. The overall Cronbach's alpha was 0.94. Participants were found to be best prepared in the domain of disease prevention (M = 4.37, SD = 0.68) and least prepared in interpersonal skills (M = 2.68, SD = 0.77). A satisfactory goodness of fit data was yield from CFA with a CMIN/DF of 2.02. Higher levels of preparedness are associated with stronger professional identity (p < 0.001) and better perceived learning environment (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of PHPQ showed good reliability and validity. Preparedness for practice was associated with how learners feel about themselves as doctors and how well they had integrated into medical teamwork.

RESUMEN

An easy and objective way to evaluate mid-face sagging is marking straight lines between the nasal alar and the mandibular angle, one in the supine and the other in an upright position. The maximal distance between the two lines drawn is measured. Statistic analyses shows that this maximum distance demonstrates positive correlation with age and body mass index that reflects the level of mid-face sagging. This simple method may be utilised to evaluate the effect of anti-ageing treatment on the face in the context of mid-face sagging.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Skin physiology measurement is receiving more attention for detecting vasculopathy in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a widely used physiological measurement to assess cutaneous microcirculation. However, findings of LDF may be subtle during early stage of microangiopathy in SSc. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that cold stress test combined with LDF could detect early-stage microangiopathy in patients with SSc. METHODS: A 67-year-old male came with multiple ulcerations on his fingers for one year. After excluding diseases such as diabetes mellitus-related peripheral arterial occlusive disease and smoking-related Buerger's disease, the diagnosis of SSc was made according to the 2013 ACR/EULAR criteria. We performed LDF and angiography for a patient with SSc and compared the results. RESULTS: Although occlusions of right ulnar and digital arteries were obvious in angiography, the baseline skin temperature and perfusion unit on right fingers remained within normal limits. While the microcirculatory abnormalities measured by LDF alone are subtle, LDF combined with cold stress test detected a significant slow recovery of skin blood flow 40 minutes after cold immersion. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, there may be discordance between macrovasculopathy and baseline microcirculatory blood flow in SSc. In such a case, cold immersion test is essential to measure the dynamic change and slow recovery of blood flow.

RESUMEN

Livedoid vasculopathy (atrophie blanche) is a form of thrombotic vasculopathy. It is characterized by small ulcers that become crusted, and heal after several months to produce white atrophic scars. The most commonly affected sites are the lower legs, in particular the dorsum of the feet and ankles. To date, the dermoscopic features of livedoid vasculopathy have not been clearly described in the literature. In this observational study, we sought to evaluate the dermoscopic patterns of livedoid vasculopathy and determine whether the dermoscopic features are associated with certain histopathological characteristics. We evaluated 9 patients with livedoid vasculopathy by dermoscopy. Skin biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathologic examination, and dermoscopic features were correlated with histopathological characteristics. In the majority of patients with livedoid vasculopathy, examination with dermoscopy revealed central crusted ulcers or ivory white areas associated with peripheral pigmentation in a reticular pattern. In addition, increased vascular structures including linear and glomerular vessels were found. On histopathological examination, the central ivory white areas correlated with dermal fibrosis, the reticular pigmentation corresponded to epidermal basal layer hyperpigmentation or melanin within melanophages in the dermal papillae, and the vascular structures correlated with dilatation and proliferation of capillaries in the upper dermis. In summary, the most common dermoscopic features of livedoid vasculopathy identified in this study were central crusted ulcers or ivory white scar-like areas associated with peripheral reticular pigmentation and increased vascular structures. The characterization of dermoscopic criteria for livedoid vasculopathy may improve the accuracy in the clinical diagnosis and follow-up of this disease.
