BACKGROUND: Factors that could predict which patients will benefit from Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs) are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of KRAS biomarker in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in relation to clinical characteristics, treatment response and PDL1 expression. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 100 patients with NSCLC who received immunotherapy with or without chemotherapy as 1st line treatment. In biopsy samples, the PDL1 biomarker expression rate and somatic mutations of KRAS gene were determined. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 67 ± 8 years. Patients were all male and 66% were found with adenocarcinoma whereas 34% with squamous cell carcinoma. The KRAS G12C mutation was found with the highest percentage (73%). In the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, patients with PDL1 > 49% in combination with a negative KRAS result had a median overall survival of 40 months compared to patients with a positive KRAS result (9 months, p < 0.05). In addition, patients diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, PDL1 < 49% and negative KRAS result had a median overall survival of 39 months compared to patients with a positive result (28 months, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the presence of KRAS mutations in advanced NSCLC patients has a poor prognostic value, regardless of their PDL1 expression values, after receiving immunotherapy as first-line treatment.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff (RC) tears are a common cause of shoulder dysfunction and pain, posing significant challenges for orthopedic surgeons. Grafts have been proposed as a solution to augment or bridge torn tendons, but optimal clinical outcomes are not always achieved due to poor graft integration, suboptimal mechanical properties, and immunological reactions. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical, CT and histological results of RC reconstruction using an intrasynovial tendon autograft, in a chronic large tear subscapularis rabbit model. METHODS: Twenty-six adult male Zealand white rabbits were used in this study. Large defects in the subscapularis tendons were produced bilaterally in 20 rabbits. After 6 weeks, secondary procedures were performed to the right shoulder of the rabbits, which were reconstructed with an intrasynovial interposition autograft (graft group). The left shoulder did not undergo any further treatment (defect group). The specimens were randomly divided into two equal time groups and underwent biomechanical testing, CT analysis, and histological evaluation at 6, and 12 weeks after reconstruction. In addition, 6 rabbits that were not operated, were used as a control group. RESULTS: At 12 weeks post-repair, the graft group exhibited a significant increase in ultimate failure load compared to the defect group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the 12-week graft group demonstrated comparable stiffness to that of the control group. CT analysis indicated no significant progression of intramuscular fat accumulation in both graft groups, in contrast to the 12-week defect group when compared to the control group. Finally, histological evaluation revealed a gradual integration of the graft with the host tissue at 12 weeks. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that intrasynovial flexor tendon autografts hold promise as an effective interposition graft for the reconstruction of chronic large RC tears, as they improve the biomechanical and biological properties of the repaired tendon. Nonetheless, further investigations in preclinical large animal models are warranted to validate and extrapolate these findings to human studies.

A crucial complication after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT), namely, acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD), occurs in about 50% of transplant recipients, leading to high morbidity and mortality. Thus far, the diagnosis of GVHD has been mainly established through clinical features and histologic or laboratory evidence of periductal lymphocyte infiltration, fibroplasia, and mixed lymphocytic and plasmocytic inflammation. Intensive research is focused on identifying biomarkers for the early diagnosis, prediction of disease, response to treatment, prognosis, and risk stratification of patients. The serum biomolecules that have been investigated are reported and summarized. Moreover, oral tissue involvement in GVHD is described, and other biomarkers that have been proposed, such as saliva, are analyzed. Future research is highlighted as a necessity in order for these biomarkers to be validated and quantified for use in clinical practice.

PURPOSE: The need to investigate the pathogenesis and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has led to the development of multiple mouse models. The aim of this study was to validate a fast food diet (FFD) mouse model that is introduced as being close to the human disease. METHODS: Eight to nine weeks old male and female C57BL/6 J mice were randomly allocated to a FFD group or to a chow diet (CD) group. Every four weeks, mice were weighed, and blood samples were collected for the measurement of glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triglycerides (TGs) and total cholesterol. After 25 weeks, mice were sacrificed, and liver tissue was histologically evaluated. RESULTS: FFD mice gained more weight (p = 0.049) and presented a higher liver-to-body weight ratio (p < 0.001) compared to CD mice. FFD group presented with greater steatosis, hepatocellular ballooning and NAFLD activity score (NAS), whereas lobular inflammation and fibrosis were not significantly different compared to CD. When stratified by sex, NAS was different between FFD and CD groups in both male and female mice. Group by time interaction was significant for weight, ALT and cholesterol, but not for glucose, AST and TGs. CONCLUSION: FFD mice presented with morphologic and biochemical features of NAFLD and with greater hepatic steatosis, hepatocellular ballooning and NAS, but not lobular inflammation and fibrosis, compared to CD mice. These results only partly validate the FFD mouse model for NAFLD, at least for a 6-month feeding period.

Purpose: To investigate whether and how extra-synovial autografts can enhance the reconstruction of chronic and large rotator cuff tears in a rabbit subscapularis model. Methods: Twenty rabbits were used to create a large subscapularis tear bilaterally. Six weeks later, the right shoulder of each rabbit was operated to repair the tear with an extra-synovial autograft, whereas the left shoulder did not undergo any surgery. At 6 and 12 weeks after the second procedure, the specimens underwent biomechanical and histological evaluation. Six more rabbits were used only as a normal reference. Results: Biomechanical evaluation demonstrated that the ultimate load to failure of the Graft group (184.1 ± 35.7 N) was significantly higher (p = 0.04) than that of the Defect group (144.5 ± 32.2 N) at 12 weeks after repair, rising to 76% of the normal subscapularis tendon tensile strength. Histological analysis revealed an enhanced healing environment with neoangiogenesis and decreased inflammatory response at the repair site. Moreover, the tendon maturing score of the Graft group increased substantially from 6 (15.8 ± 0.9) to 12 (23.1 ± 0.6) weeks after repair (p = 0.01). Conclusion: In vivo data support the efficacy of extra-synovial autograft interposition in repairing chronic and large rotator cuff tears in a rabbit subscapularis model. The autografts were capable of enhancing the biomechanical properties of the repaired tendons, as evidenced by increased tensile strength, and forming new connective tissue simulating a fibrocartilage zone, as revealed by histological evaluation. BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to evaluate a new propeller vascularized lymphatic tissue flap (pVLNT) combined with aligned nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds (CS) (BioBridge) in reducing lymphedema in the rat lymphedema model. METHODS: Unilateral left hindlimb lymphedema was created in 15 female Sprague-Dawley rats following inguinal and popliteal lymph nodes (LN) resection and radiation. An inguinal pVLNT was elevated from the contralateral groin and transferred through a skin tunnel to the affected groin. Four collagen threads were attached to the flap and inserted in the hindlimb at the subcutaneous level in a fan shape. The three study groups consisted of group A (control), group B (pVLNT), and group C (pVLNT + CS). Volumetric analysis of both hindlimbs was performed using micro-computed tomography imaging before the surgery (at initial time point) and then at 1 and 4 months, postoperatively, and the relative volume difference (excess volume) was measured for each animal. Lymphatic drainage was assessed by indocyanine green (ICG) fluoroscopy for number and morphology of new collectors and the time required for ICG to move from injection point to the midline. RESULTS: Four months after the induction of lymphedema, an increased relative volume difference remained in group A (5.32 ± 4.74%), while there was a significant relative volume reduction in group B (-13.39 ± 8.55%) and an even greater reduction in group C (-14.56 ± 5.04%). ICG fluoroscopy proved the functional restoration of lymphatic vessels and viability of pVLNT in both B and C groups. Notably, only group C demonstrated statistically significant improvements in lymphatic pattern/morphology and in the number of lymphatic collectors as compared with the control group A. CONCLUSION: The pedicle lymphatic tissue flap combined with SC is an effective procedure for the treatment of lymphedema in rats. It can be easily translated into treatment of humans' lower and upper limb lymphedema and further clinical studies are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Muscle fatty degeneration following rotator cuff tears has been unequivocally associated with poorer functional outcomes and increased risk for retear following rotator cuff repair. Promising results have emerged from animal studies, with the implementation of various interventions for biologic inhibition of this fatty muscle degeneration. The lack of high quality randomized human evidence on this topic, increases the impact of pooled results from animal literature. The aim of the present study was to systematically review the available published literature for animal studies evaluating the ability of several interventions used to mitigate muscle fatty degeneration following the repair of massive rotator cuff tears. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted on Pubmed, Scopus and Google Scholar, covering the period from conception until 16th April 2022. Datasets were stratified based on the type of intervention performed. SYRCLE risk of bias instrument was implemented for quality assessment of the included studies. RESULTS: Rotator cuff repair augmentation with Adipose derived stem cells (ADSC's), Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC's) and Nandrolone was effective against fatty infiltration, but less effective against muscle atrophy. More beneficial effect was shown by the utilization of Beige adipose tissue - Fibroadipogenic progenitors (BAT-FAP) stimulation, using either Amibregon or BAT-FAPs transplantation. Both provided good results in mitigating muscle atrophy, fatty infiltration and fibrosis. DISCUSSION: ADSC's, MSC's, Nandrolone and BAT-FAP stimulation may have a role in mitigating muscle fatty degeneration following rotator cuff tears. Large scale human studies are required to further elucidate their role in the clinical setting. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: V; systematic review of pre-clinical studies.

Background: Infection of orthopaedic implants after internal fixation of bone fractures remains a major complication with occasionally devastating consequences. Recent studies have reported that the use of absorbable materials, instead of metallic ones, may lead to a lower incidence of postoperative infection. In this experimental pre-clinical animal study, we compared the infection rate between absorbable implants consisting of copolymers composed from trimethylene carbonate, L-polylactic acid, and D, L-polylactic acid monomers, and titanium implants after the inoculation of a pathogenic microorganism. Material and Methods: We used an experimental implant-related infection model in rabbits. Sixty animals were randomly and equally divided into two groups. In all animals, the right femur was exposed via a lateral approach and a 2.5 mm two-hole titanium plate with screws (Group A), or a two-hole absorbable plate and screws (Group B), were applied in the femoral shaft. Afterwards, the implant surface was inoculated with Pseudomonas Aeruginosa at a concentration of 2 × 108 CFU/mL. The primary outcome was the comparison of the incidence of developed infection between the two groups. The wound condition was monitored on a daily basis and radiographies were obtained at 12 weeks postoperatively. Infection-related laboratory markers (white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein values) were assessed at 3, 6, and 16 weeks postoperatively. Histologic analysis and cultures of tissue samples were also performed to evaluate the presence of infection. Results: Clinical and laboratory signs of infection were evident in 11 rabbits in Group A (36.7%), and 4 in Group B (13.3%). The difference between the groups was statistically significant (p = 0.04). Five animals in Group B (16.7%) had clinical and histologic signs of a foreign-body reaction with significantly elevated CRP and ESR values but no simultaneous presence of infection was identified (p = 0.04). Bone remodelling with thickening of the periosteum and surrounding sclerosis was demonstrated radiologically in animals developing infection or foreign-body reactions. Conclusions: Absorbable plates and screws show lower susceptibility to infection compared to titanium ones. However, their application is associated with foreign-body reaction and the potential need for a second surgical intervention.

(1) Background: A surgical operation on an inflamed bowel is, diachronically, a challenge for the surgeon, especially for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells are already in use in clinical settings for their anti-inflammatory properties. The rationale of the current study was to use AdMSCs in high-risk anastomoses to monitor if they attenuate inflammation and prevent anastomotic leak. (2) Methods: a total of 4 groups of rats were subjected to a surgical transection of the large intestine and primary anastomosis. In two groups, DSS 5% was administered for 7 days prior to the procedure, to induce acute intestinal inflammation. After the anastomosis, 5 × 106 autologous AdMSCs or an acellular solution was injected locally. Macroscopic evaluation, bursting pressure, hydroxyproline, and inflammatory cytokine expression were the parameters measured on the 8th post-operative day. (3) Results: Significantly less intra-abdominal complications, higher bursting pressures, and a decrease in pro-inflammatory markers were found in the groups that received AdMSCs. No difference in VEGF expression was observed on the 8th post-operative day. (4) Conclusions: AdMSCs attenuate inflammation in cases of acutely inflamed anastomosis.

Wound healing is a complex and meticulously orchestrated process involving multiple phases and cellular interactions. This narrative review explores the intricate mechanisms behind wound healing, emphasizing the significance of cellular processes and molecular factors. The phases of wound healing are discussed, focusing on the roles of immune cells, growth factors, and extracellular matrix components. Cellular shape alterations driven by cytoskeletal modulation and the influence of the 'Formin' protein family are highlighted for their impact on wound healing processes. This review delves into the use of absorbable meshes in wound repair, discussing their categories and applications in different surgical scenarios. Interleukins (IL-2 and IL-6), CD31, CD34, platelet rich plasma (PRP), and adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are discussed in their respective roles in wound healing. The interactions between these factors and their potential synergies with absorbable meshes are explored, shedding light on how these combinations might enhance the healing process. Recent advances and challenges in the field are also presented, including insights into mesh integration, biocompatibility, infection prevention, and postoperative complications. This review underscores the importance of patient-specific factors and surgical techniques in optimizing mesh placement and healing outcomes. As wound healing remains a dynamic field, this narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding and potential avenues for future research and clinical applications.

Introduction: Primary HPT (PHPT) is a common disorder, affecting approximately 1% of the general population. Parathyroid adenomas emerge as non-familial sporadic in 90% of cases. The aim of this review is to give a detailed update of molecular genetics of sporadic parathyroid adenoma reported in international literature. Methods: A bibliographic research was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Results: Seventy-eight articles were included in our review. CaSR, MEN1, CCND1/PRAD, CDKI, angiogenic factors like VEGF, FGF, TGFß, and IGF1, and apoptotic factors are important genes in parathyroid adenomas pathogenesis that have been established by several studies. A huge list of proteins is differently expressed in parathyroid adenomas measured by Western Blotting, MALDI/TOF, MS spectrometry, and immunohistochemistry. These proteins take part in several cell processes such as cell metabolism, cytoskeleton structural stability, cell oxidative stress regulation, cell death, transcription, translation, cell connection, and cell signaling transmission, while they can be found over- or underexpressed in abnormal tissues. Conclusion: This review gives a detailed analysis of all reported data on genomics and proteomics of parathyroid adenoma. Further studies should be applied on understanding parathyroid adenoma pathogenesis and introducing new biomarkers for early detection of primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the third most common endocrine disorder characterized by autonomous parathyroid hormone (PTH) production from one or more parathyroid glands and hypocalcemia. Vitamin D through its receptor is a principal regulator of parathyroid glands function. VDR gene polymorphisms, which affect the expression or structure of VDR protein, may be involved in the genetic pathogenesis of PHPT. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of FokI, ApaI, TaqI, and BsmI VDR gene polymorphisms as genetic predisposing factors for PHPT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty unrelated patients with sporadic PHPT and an equal number of corresponding ethnicity, sex and age range healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Genotyping was performed with polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference was observed in TaqI genotype distribution between PHPT patients and controls, while no association was detected for the other studied polymorphisms. CONCLUSION: TaqI TT and TC genotypes may be associated with PHPT risk in Greek population. Further independent studies are needed to replicate and validate the role of VDR TaqI polymorphism in PHPT predisposition.

Aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term therapeutic outcome and treatment-related complications in Hodgkin disease. We reviewed the medical records of 93 patients diagnosed with classic Hodgkin lymphoma, treated, and followed-up during the last 25 years. The cohort study included 49 males and 44 females with median age 11.8 years old (range: 3.95 to 17.42 y). The most common subtype was nodular sclerosis in 47/93 (50.5%). B symptoms were present in 15/93 (16.1%). From January 2009 until December 2020, 55 (59%) patients diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma were treated according to European Network for Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma (EURONET)-PHL-C1 protocol. Concerning outcome, a total of 89/93 patients are alive. Relapse occurred in 7/93. Second malignancies are reported in a total of 5 patients, 3 solid tumors (thyroid cancer, breast cancer, and osteosarcoma), and 2 acute myeloid leukemias. The overall survival and event-free survival for the whole cohort were 95.7% and 83.9%, respectively. Disease-free survival was 92.5%. Although a considerable high fraction of patients with Hodgkin disease can achieve continuous complete remission, they are at a high risk of developing long-term treatment-related complications. High curative rates as well as prevention of late effects can be achieved by implementation of individualized treatment strategies and innovative treatments.

Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs and statins are two widely prescribed drug classes that affect bone formation. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of diclofenac and simvastatin in artificial bone defect healing. One hundred and forty-four male Wistar rats were used, and the specimens were divided into groups, with respect to the route of drug administration and the type of defect healing (with or without collagen membrane), and subgroups, with respect to the study duration (2, 4 or 8 weeks). Diclofenac was intramuscularly administered while simvastatin was administered both systemically and locally. Animals were euthanized and specimens were histomorphometrically analyzed to evaluate the percentage of new bone formation (%). Bone healing that occurred without any intervention developed more steadily than that of all other groups. Diclofenac exerted a clear, direct inhibitory effect on bone healing and its systemic administration should be avoided. The systemic administration of simvastatin was related to severe myopathy, while the solvent for the local administration of simvastatin seemed to play significant role in bone growth, as simvastatin, when it is administered intraperitoneally in a DMSO solution, appeared to promote bone healing. Local administration may have a significant impact on bone healing and it should be further investigated with the type of solvent or carrier that is used, which both may play a significant role in bone repair induction.

BACKGROUND Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas (SNUC) are highly malignant and rare lesions. Therapeutic efforts often provide frustrating results. Their course is characterized by indolent progression, until it culminates in extensive local infiltration of adjacent anatomical structures or cervical lymphadenopathy in approximately one-third of patients upon admission. It most frequently affects males, with a sex ratio of 3: 1. The age at manifestation tends to be about 40-50 years. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 41-year-old man with intracranial expansion of SNUC. Two previous sinus surgeries were performed endoscopically because the lesion at that moment was exclusively located endonasally. Within the last few months, he had been having persistent headaches. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an anterior cranial fossa lesion. Therefore, he underwent a bifrontal craniotomy and excision of the space-occupying lesion (SOL). The osseous defect of the skull base was covered with a titanium mesh. Finally, we performed a duraplasty using a pericranial flap and fat tissue taken from his abdomen. Postoperatively, his wound was dehisced. We proceeded then to a frontal craniectomy with surgical debridement, subgaleal empyem and epidural abscess removal, and copious irrigation with oxygen peroxide. Enterococcus spp. were isolated from pus cultures. Despite receiving bacteria-focused antibiotics, he unfortunately developed sepsis and died. The histopathologic findings revealed a SNUC, which is the criterion standard for diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Multimodal treatment offers the best prognosis to patients with SNUC. Combined operations by otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons provide the necessary radicality. There is high risk of wound healing disorders, especially when local irradiation had been administered.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal cocoon or sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis is an uncommon condition in which the small bowel is completely or partially encased by a thick fibrotic membrane. Our study presents a case of sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis and conducts a literature review. METHODS: A bibliographic research was conducted. Our research comprised 97 articles. Gender, age, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment were all included in the database of patient characteristics. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old man complaining of a 2-day history of minor diffuse abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and constipation was presented in emergency department. Physical examination was indicative of intestinal obstruction. Laboratory tests were normal. Diffuse intraperitoneal fluid and dilated small intestinal loops were discovered on computed tomography (CT). An exploratory laparotomy was recommended, in which the sac membrane was removed and adhesiolysis was performed. He was discharged on the tenth postoperative day. RESULTS: There were 240 cases of abdominal cocoon syndrome in total. In terms of gender, 151 of 240 (62.9%) were male and 89 of 240 (37%) were female. Ages between 20 and 40 are most affected. Symptoms include abdominal pain and obstruction signs. For the diagnosis of abdominal cocoon syndrome, CT may be the gold standard imaging method. The surgical operation was the treatment of choice in the vast majority of cases (96.7%). Only 69 of 239 patients (28.9%) were detected prior to surgery, and CT was applied in these cases. CONCLUSION: Abdominal cocoon is a rare condition marked by recurrent episodes of intestinal obstruction. Surgical therapy is the most effective treatment option.

Introduction: Composite paragangliomas consist of two components, paraganglioma and ganglioneuroma, representing a rare subgroup of paragangliomas. The purpose of the study is to describe a case of composite paraganglioma of the celiac trunk and a brief review of the existing literature. Case Presentation: A 64-year-old female patient with a history of epigastric abdominal pain and a 51 mm-diameter tumor found in a Computerized Tomography of the abdomen was admitted to our surgical department for further evaluation and treatment. After a brief preoperative surgical assessment, the patient underwent a mini-laparotomy for the excision of this tumor. After having the results of the pathology report, a comprehensive review of the international literature was carried out by applying the appropriate search terms. Results: As it was found intraoperatively, the tumor was located at the cephalad aspect of the common hepatic artery, over the portal vein and the inferior vena cava. A negative-margin resection was achieved and the tumor was sent for pathology analysis. The final pathology report revealed a composite paraganglioma, with α paraganglioma and a ganglioneuroma component. Seventeen cases of extra-adrenal composite paraganglioma have been reported in the international literature so far. This case was the first one found in the area of the celiac trunk. Conclusions: Composite paragangliomas comprise rare and potentially malignant tumors with variable prognosis. Establishing their diagnosis promptly is of vital significance. Due to the first-described location of the composite paraganglioma in our case, the differential diagnosis of tumors in this area should also include composite paragangliomas.

Wound healing and tissue regeneration are a field of clinical medicine presenting high research interest, since various local and systematic factors can inhibit these processes and lead to an inferior result. New methods of healing enhancement constantly arise, which, however, require experimental validation before their establishment in everyday practice. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a well-known autologous factor that promotes tissue healing in various surgical defects. PRP derives from the centrifugation of peripheral blood and has a high concentration of growth factors that promote healing. Recently, the use of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) has been thoroughly investigated as a form of wound healing enhancement. ADMSCs are autologous stem cells deriving from fat tissue, with a capability of differentiation in specific cells, depending on the micro-environment that they are exposed to. The aim of the present comprehensive review is to record the experimental studies that have been published and investigate the synergistic use of PRP and ADMSC in animal models. The technical aspects of experimentations, as well as the major results of each study, are discussed. In addition, the limited clinical studies including humans are also reported. Future perspectives are discussed, along with the limitations of current studies on the long-term follow up needed on efficacy and safety.

Lung cancer is often diagnosed at inoperable advanced stages, and most patients exhibit cancer cachexia. The nutritional status of patients has been previously observed to serve a key role in cancer survival and cancer surgery. The aim of the current study was to collect information regarding the treatment of patients and associate them with different nutritional measurements. A total of 82 patients with non-small cell lung cancer were included in the present study. Several parameters were assessed, such as body mass index (BMI), Mediterranian diet score, number of years spent smoking, basic metabolsim (RMR; kcal/day), VO2 (ml/min), ventilation (lt/min) and physical activity. All the aforementioned parameters were associated with patient treatment, nutritional status and survival. Two-way ANOVA was conducted and pairwise group mean differences were tested using Fisher's LSD and Tukey tests. Normality and variance homogeneity was checked in all cases. The results revealed that RMR and oxygen consumption were negatively affected by the survival status of patients (P=0.012 and P=0.043, respectively). The mean fat difference was higher in patients treated with immunotherapy, and lower in those treated with chemotherapy in addition to immunotherapy, as demonstrated by Tukey comparisons. The survival of 25 patients were affected by the treatment they received (P=0.006). Chemotherapy administered in addition to immunotherapy prolonged patient life almost two-fold when compared with the individual effects of the two treatments, which became equal according to Fisher's LSD comparisons. In conclusion, the nutritional status of patients was associated with the administration of chemotherapy in addition to immunotherapy, and patient survival. Increased metabolism and fat mass were also associated with prolonged survival.
