BACKGROUND: Pre-hospital delay in China is a serious issue with unclear relevant reasons, seriously impeding the adoption of appropriate measures. Herein, we analyzed the onset-to-door time (ODT) in Chinese patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and its influencing factors. METHODS: We prospectively recruited 3,459 patients with AIS from nine representative tertiary general hospitals in China between January and June 2022. Patients were divided into ODT ≤ 3 h and ODT > 3 h groups. Following single-factor analysis, binary logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the risk factors leading to pre-hospital delay. RESULTS: In total, 763 (21.83%) patients arrived at the hospital within 3 h of onset. After adjusting for confounding factors, the risk factors for ODT were residence in rural areas (odds ratio [OR]: 1.478, 95% credibility interval [CI]: 1.024-2.146) and hospital transfer (OR: 7.479, 95% CI: 2.548-32.337). The protective factors for ODT were location of onset ≤ 20 km from the first-visit hospital (OR: 0.355, 95% CI: 0.236-0.530), transportation by emergency medical services (OR: 0.346, 95% CI: 0.216-0.555), history of atrial fibrillation (OR: 0.375, 95% CI: 0.207-0.679), moderate stroke (OR: 0.644, 95% CI: 0.462-0.901), and severe stroke (OR: 0.506, 95% CI: 0.285-0.908). CONCLUSIONS: Most patients with AIS fail to reach a hospital within the critical 3-h window. The following measures are recommended to reduce pre-hospital delays: reasonable distribution of hospitals accessible to nearby residents, minimizing interhospital transfer, paying attention to patients with mild stroke, and encouraging patients to use ambulance services. Pre-hospital delays for patients can be reduced by implementing these measures, ultimately improving the timeliness of treatment and enhancing patient prognosis. This study was carried out amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which presented challenges and constraints.

Introduction: Mifepristone-misoprostol treatment for medical abortion and miscarriage are safe and effective. This study aimed to assess clinical factors associated with subsequent surgical intervention after medical termination of early viable or non-viable pregnancy. Methods: This retrospective, single-center study included women who underwent medical abortion at Taipei Medical University between January 2010 and December 2019. A total of 1,561 subjects, with 1,080 viable and 481 non-viable pregnancies, who were treated with oral mifepristone 600 mg followed by misoprostol 600 mg 48 h later were included. Data of all pregnancies and medical termination of pregnancy were evaluated using regression analysis. The main outcome was successful termination of pregnancy. Results: The success rate of medical abortion was comparable in women with viable and non-viable (92.13% vs. 92.93%) pregnancies. Besides retained tissue, more existing pregnancies with ultrasonographic findings were found in the non-viable pregnancy group than in the viable pregnancy group (29.4% vs. 14.1%, p = 0.011). Multivariate analysis showed that previous delivery was an independent risk factor for failed medical abortion among all included cases. In women with viable pregnancy, longer gestational age [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.483, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.224-1.797, p < 0.001] and previous Cesarean delivery (aOR: 2.177, 95% CI: 1.167-40.62, p = 0.014) were independent risk factors for failed medical abortion. Number of Cesarean deliveries (aOR: 1.448, 95% CI: 1.029-2.039, p = 0.034) was an independent risk factor for failed medication abortion in women with non-viable pregnancies. Conclusion: This is the first cohort study to identify risk factors for subsequent surgical intervention in women with viable or non-viable pregnancies who had undergone early medically induced abortions. The success rate of medical abortion is comparable in women with viable and non-viable pregnancies. Previous delivery is an independent risk factor for failed medical abortion. Clinical follow-up may be necessary for women who are at risk of subsequent surgical intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Appropriate malignant fungating wound (MFW) care is challenging for oncology nurses, leading to increased stress, compromised care quality, and poor patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to address best practice barriers and develop evidence-based guidelines for MFW care. METHODS: This project was guided by the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework, which follows a seven-phase process. Both nurses' skills and patient charts were audited to determine compliance with best practices for comprehensive MFW assessment, wound photo records, use of validated wound assessment tools, appropriate wound care, and patient pain and satisfaction. Bandura's social learning theory was used to guide the development of an online education program and an objective structured clinical examination for skill improvement to prompt behavior change in nurses. A follow-up audit was conducted to measure improvements in knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy among nurses to validate the effectiveness of the intervention. RESULTS: The project resulted in improvements in all four evidence-based practice criteria: (1) comprehensive MFW assessments increased from 27% to 98%; (2) the inclusion of wound photos in medical records increased from 50% to 100%; (3) use of a validated wound assessment tool increased from 0% to 100%; and (4) appropriate interventions to manage wounds and maintain patients' quality of life increased from 50% to 90%. CONCLUSIONS: The project integrated a flexible education program, multidisciplinary collaboration, and leadership support to empower nurses to effectively manage MFWs. In addition, Bandura's social learning theory was used to influence nurses' behavior and bring about sustainable changes to organizational culture and practices. Psoriasis presents as a complex genetic skin disorder, characterized by the interaction between infiltrated immune cells and keratinocytes. Substantial progress has been made in understanding the molecular mechanisms of both coding and non-coding genes, which has positively impacted clinical treatment approaches. Despite extensive research into the genetic aspects of psoriasis pathogenesis, fully grasping its epigenetic component remains a challenging endeavor. In response to the pressing demand for innovative treatments to alleviate inflammatory skin disorders, various novel strategies are under consideration. These include gene therapy employing antisense nucleotides, silencing RNA complexes, stem cell therapy, and antibody-based therapy. There is a pressing requirement for a psoriasis-like animal model that replicates human psoriasis to facilitate early preclinical evaluations of these novel treatments. The authors conduct a comprehensive review of various gene therapy in different psoriasis-like animal models utilized in psoriasis research. The animals included in the list underwent skin treatments such as imiquimod application, as well as genetic and biologic injections, and the results of these interventions are detailed. Animal models play a crucial role in translating drug discoveries from the laboratory to clinical practice, and these models aid in improving the reproducibility and clinical applicability of preclinical data. Numerous animal models with characteristics similar to those of human psoriasis have proven to be useful in understanding the development of psoriasis. In this review, the article focuses on RNA-based gene therapy exploration in different types of psoriasis-like animal models to improve the treatment of psoriasis.

Three new heteroleptic Ru complexes, CYC-B22, CYC-B23C, and CYC-B23T, were prepared as sensitizers for coadsorbent-free, panchromatic, and efficient dye-sensitized solar cells. They are simultaneously functionalized with highly conjugated anchoring and ancillary ligands to explore the electronic and steric effects on their photovoltaic characteristics. The coadsorbent-free device based on CYC-B22 achieved the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.63% and a panchromatic response extending to 850 nm. The two stereoisomers, CYC-B23C and CYC-B23T coordinated with an unsymmetrical anchoring ligand, display similar absorption properties and the same driving forces for electron injection as well as dye regeneration. Nevertheless, the devices show not only the remarkably distinct PCE (6.64% vs 8.38%) but also discernible stability. The molecular simulation for the two stereoisomers adsorbed on TiO2 clarifies the distinguishable distances (16.9 Å vs 19.0 Å) between the sulfur atoms in the NCS ligands and the surface of the TiO2, dominating the charge recombination dynamics and iodine binding and therefore the PCE and stability of the devices. This study on the steric effects caused by the highly conjugated and unsymmetrical anchoring ligand on the adsorption geometry and photovoltaic performance of the dyes paves a new way for advancing the molecular design of polypyridyl metal complex sensitizers.

Replication stress converts the stalled forks into reversed forks, which is an important protection mechanism to prevent fork degradation and collapse into poisonous DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Paradoxically, the mechanism also acts in cancer cells to contribute to chemoresistance against various DNA-damaging agents. PARP1 binds to and is activated by stalled forks to facilitate fork reversal. Aprataxin and polynucleotide kinase/phosphatase-like factor (APLF) binds to PARP1 through the poly(ADP-ribose) zinc finger (PBZ) domain and is known to be involved in non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). Here, we identify a novel function of APLF involved in interstrand DNA crosslink (ICL) repair and fork protection. We demonstrate that PARP1 activity facilitates the APLF recruitment to stalled forks, enabling the FANCD2 recruitment to stalled forks. The depletion of APLF sensitizes cells to cisplatin, impairs ICL repair, reduces the FANCD2 recruitment to stalled forks, and results in nascent DNA degradation by MRE11 nucleases. Additionally, cisplatin-resistant cancer cells show high levels of APLF and homologous recombination-related gene expression. The depletion of APLF sensitizes cells to cisplatin and results in fork instability. Our results reveal the novel function of APLF to facilitate ICL repair and fork protection, thereby contributing to cisplatin-resistant phenotypes of cancer cells.

An increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a poor prognostic biomarker in various types of cancer, because it reflects the inhibition of lymphocytes in the circulation and tumors. In urologic cancers, upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is known for its aggressive features and lack of T cell infiltration; however, the association between neutrophils and suppressed T lymphocytes in UTUC is largely unknown. In this study, we examined the relationship between UTUC-derived factors and tumor-associated neutrophils or T lymphocytes. The culture supernatant from UTUC tumor tissue modulated neutrophils to inhibit T cell proliferation. Among the dominant factors secreted by UTUC tumor tissue, apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) exhibited a positive correlation with NLR. Moreover, tumor-infiltrating neutrophils were inversely correlated with tumor-infiltrating T cells. Elevated Apo-A1 levels in UTUC were also inversely associated with the population of tumor-infiltrating T cells. Our findings indicate that elevated Apo-A1 expression in UTUC correlates with tumor-associated neutrophils and T cells. This suggests a potential immunomodulatory effect on neutrophils and T cells within the tumor microenvironment, which may represent therapeutic targets for UTUC treatment.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) control various cellular functions through fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) activation, including proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival. FGFR amplification in ER + breast cancer patients correlate with poor prognosis, and FGFR inhibitors are currently being tested in clinical trials. By comparing three-dimensional spheroid growth of ER + breast cancer cells with and without FGFR1 amplification, our research discovered that FGF2 treatment can paradoxically decrease proliferation in cells with FGFR1 amplification or overexpression. In contrast, FGF2 treatment in cells without FGFR1 amplification promotes classical FGFR proliferative signaling through the MAPK cascade. The growth inhibitory effect of FGF2 in FGFR1 amplified cells aligned with an increase in p21, a cell cycle inhibitor that hinders the G1 to S phase transition in the cell cycle. Additionally, FGF2 addition in FGFR1 amplified cells activated JAK-STAT signaling and promoted a stem cell-like state. FGF2-induced paradoxical effects were reversed by inhibiting p21 or the JAK-STAT pathway and with pan-FGFR inhibitors. Analysis of patient ER + breast tumor transcriptomes from the TCGA and METABRIC datasets demonstrated a strong positive association between expression of FGF2 and stemness signatures, which was further enhanced in tumors with high FGFR1 expression. Overall, our findings reveal a divergence in FGFR signaling, transitioning from a proliferative to stemness state driven by activation of JAK-STAT signaling and modulation of p21 levels. Activation of these divergent signaling pathways in FGFR amplified cancer cells and paradoxical growth effects highlight a challenge in the use of FGFR inhibitors in cancer treatment.

Objective.The aim of this study was to reconstruct volumetric computed tomography (CT) images in real-time from ultra-sparse two-dimensional x-ray projections, facilitating easier navigation and positioning during image-guided radiation therapy.Approach.Our approach leverages a voxel-sapce-searching Transformer model to overcome the limitations of conventional CT reconstruction techniques, which require extensive x-ray projections and lead to high radiation doses and equipment constraints.Main results.The proposed XTransCT algorithm demonstrated superior performance in terms of image quality, structural accuracy, and generalizability across different datasets, including a hospital set of 50 patients, the large-scale public LIDC-IDRI dataset, and the LNDb dataset for cross-validation. Notably, the algorithm achieved an approximately 300% improvement in reconstruction speed, with a rate of 44 ms per 3D image reconstruction compared to former 3D convolution-based methods.Significance.The XTransCT architecture has the potential to impact clinical practice by providing high-quality CT images faster and with substantially reduced radiation exposure for patients. The model's generalizability suggests it has the potential applicable in various healthcare settings.

Context: The coexistence of hypertension and elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels has a mutually reinforcing impact on the susceptibility to cardio-cerebrovascular disease. Objective: The aim was to assess the prevalence, clinical correlation, and demographic characteristics of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) within the Chinese urban population with hypertension. Methods: A cohort of 473 individuals with hypertension were selected from four communities in Shenzhen, China. Demographic attributes, clinical profiles, and lifestyle behaviors were gathered and compared between individuals with and without HHcy. A logistic regression model was employed to examine potential factors associated with the prevalence of HHcy. Correlation between Hcy levels and clinical characteristics was assessed through multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of HHcy in the population with hypertension was 31.3%. In comparison to individuals without HHcy, those with HHcy exhibited a higher proportion of males, a higher prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption, and a higher proportion of cases with the homozygous (TT) genotype at the MTHFR C677T polymorphism. Moreover, individuals with HHcy had lower levels of folic acid (FA), and lower fruit and vitamin B12 intake. Furthermore, the risk factors for HHcy were male (B = 1.430, OR = 4.179) and MTHFR (TT) (B = 1.086, OR = 2.961). In addition, the multiple linear regression analysis revealed a significant association between Hcy levels and gender (B = -2.784, P = 0.004), MTHFR genotypes (B = 1.410, P = 0.005), and FA levels (B = -0.136, P = 0.030). Conclusion: The high prevalence of HHcy among hypertensive patients in this Chinese urban population underscores the necessity for interventions targeting modifiable risk factors such as dietary choices and lifestyle practices.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to investigate anatomical changes in the neck region and their impact on dose distribution in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) undergoing intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), as well as to determine the optimal time for replanning during treatment. METHODS: Twenty NPC patients received IMRT with weekly pretreatment in-room kV fan beam computed tomography (FBCT) scans. Metastasized lymph nodes in the neck region and organs at risk (OARs) were recontoured based on the FBCT scans. The original treatment plan (PLAN0) was copied to each FBCT scan to create new plans of PLAN 1-6, correspondingly. The dose-volume histograms (DVH) of the new plans and the original plan were compared. One-way repeated measure ANOVA was employed to define threshold(s) at any timepoint. The presence of a threshold(s) would indicate significant anatomical change(s) such that replanning should be suggested. RESULTS: Progressive volume reductions in the neck region, gross target volume for metastatic lymph nodes (GTVnd), submandibular glands, and parotids were observed over time. Compared to PLAN0, Dmean of GTVnd-L significantly increased in PLAN5, while the D95% of PGTVnd-L showed a significant decrease from PLAN3 to PLAN6. Similarly, the Dmean of GTVnd-R significantly increased from PLAN4 to PLAN6, whereas the D95% of PGTVnd-R exhibited a significant decrease from PLAN3 to PLAN6. Furthermore, a gradual increase in the dose delivered to the bilateral parotid glands, bilateral submandibular glands, brainstem, and spinal cord from PLAN0 to PLAN6. CONCLUSION: Significant anatomic and dosimetric changes were observed in the target volumes and OARs. Based on the identified thresholds, replanning at approximately 20 fractions is crucial to ensure adequate target volumes dose and avoid overdosing to the OARs. This approach is clinically feasible and strongly recommended, particularly for centers without access to an adaptive planning system.

Retinopathy caused by ultraviolet radiation and cancer chemotherapy has increased dramatically in humans due to rapid environmental and social changes. Therefore, it is very important to develop therapeutic strategies to effectively alleviate retinopathy. In China, people often choose dendrobium to improve their eyesight. In this study, we explored how Dendrobium fimbriatum extract (DFE) protects ARPE-19 cells and mouse retinal tissue from damage of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and chemotherapy. We evaluated the antioxidant capacity of DFE using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitophenylhydrazine (DPPH) assay. The protective effects of DEF from UV- and oxaliplatin (OXA)-induced damage were examined in ARPE-19 cells using 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and immunofluorescence (IF) stains, and in mouse retinal tissue using immunohistochemistry (IHC) stains. Our results show that DFE has excellent antioxidant capacity. The ARPE-19 cell viability was decreased and the F-actin cytoskeleton structure was damaged by UV radiation and OXA chemotherapy, but both were alleviated after the DFE treatment. Furthermore, DFE treatment can alleviate OXA chemotherapy-induced reduced expressions of rhodopsin and SOD2 and increased expressions of TNF-α and caspase 3 in mouse retinal tissue. Thus, we suggest that DFE can act as suitable treatment for retinopathy through reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Functional ultrasound (fUS) flow imaging provides a non-invasive method for the in vivo study of cerebral blood flow and neural activity. This study used functional flow imaging to investigate rat brain's response to ultrasound and colored-light stimuli. Male Long-Evan rats were exposed to direct full-field strobe flashes light and ultrasound stimulation to their retinas, while brain activity was measured using high-frequency ultrasound imaging. Our study found that light stimuli, particularly blue light, elicited strong responses in the visual cortex and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), as evidenced by changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV). In contrast, ultrasound stimulation elicited responses undetectable with fUS flow imaging, although these were observable when directly measuring the brain's electrical signals. These findings suggest that fUS flow imaging can effectively differentiate neural responses to visual stimuli, with potential applications in understanding visual processing and developing new diagnostic tools.

The herb Sophora flavescens displays anti-inflammatory activity and can provide a source of antipsoriatic medications. We aimed to evaluate whether S. flavescens extracts and compounds can relieve psoriasiform inflammation. The ability of flavonoids (maackiain, sophoraflavanone G, leachianone A) and alkaloids (matrine, oxymatrine) isolated from S. flavescens to inhibit production of cytokine/chemokines was examined in keratinocytes and macrophages. Physicochemical properties and skin absorption were determined by in silico molecular modeling and the in vitro permeation test (IVPT) to establish the structure-permeation relationship (SPR). The ethyl acetate extract exhibited higher inhibition of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and CXCL1 production in tumor necrosis factor-α-stimulated keratinocytes compared to the ethanol and water extracts. The flavonoids demonstrated higher cytokine/chemokine inhibition than alkaloids, with the prenylated flavanones (sophoraflavanone G, leachianone A) led to the highest suppression. Flavonoids exerted anti-inflammatory effects via the extracellular signal-regulated kinase, p38, activator protein-1, and nuclear factor-κB signaling pathways. In the IVPT, prenylation of the flavanone skeleton significantly promoted skin absorption from 0.01 to 0.22 nmol/mg (sophoraflavanone G vs. eriodictyol). Further methoxylation of a prenylated flavanone (leachianone A) elevated skin absorption to 2.65 nmol/mg. Topical leachianone A reduced the epidermal thickness in IMQ-treated mice by 47%, and inhibited cutaneous scaling and cytokine/chemokine overexpression at comparable levels to a commercial betamethasone product. Thus, prenylation and methoxylation of S. flavescens flavanones may enable the design of novel antipsoriatic agents.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, 84 615 patients in Taiwan received hemodialysis, of which about 62% to 97% suffered from fatigue. Fatigue caused by hemodialysis may be mental or physical. However, the detailed mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether far-infrared stimulation of the Neiguan acupoint (P6) could effectively reduce fatigue and improve heart rate variability (HRV) in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm, randomized trial in a hemodialysis center between March 2015 and March 2016. A total of 73 hemodialysis patients were included and were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 37) and a control group (n = 36). The experimental group received far-infrared radiation on Neiguan acupoint during hemodialysis for 12 weeks. The outcomes were fatigue level and HRV. RESULTS: All patients showed moderate fatigue ( M = 26.00 ± 13.01, range = 0-78) at baseline. Far-infrared stimulation on Neiguan acupoint significantly reduced overall fatigue ( ß = 24, p < 0.001) and improved HRV ( ß = 74.36, p < 0.001). Compared to the control group, the experiment group had significantly reduced fatigue levels in all aspects such as reduced energy and motivation ( ß = -2.97, p < 0.001), reduced physical strength ( ß = -1.28, p < 0.01), reduced mental capability ( ß = -2.38, p < 0.001), reduction in daily activities ( ß = -1.48, p < 0.01), depressed mood and loss of control ( ß = -1.21, p < 0.05) as well as increased autonomous nervous system activity ( ß = 14.71, p < 0.01) in the third month of stimulation. CONCLUSION: Far-infrared stimulation of the Neiguan acupoints effectively reduces fatigue and increases autonomic nervous system activity in hemodialysis patients.

Recent theoretical and experimental studies of the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) have sparked great interest in its implementation into practical magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) devices, due to its capability to mediate long-range chiral spin textures. So far, experimental reports focused on the observation of interlayer DMI, leaving the development of strategies to control interlayer DMI's magnitude unaddressed. Here, we introduce an azimuthal symmetry engineering protocol capable of additive/subtractive tuning of interlayer DMI through the control of wedge deposition of separate layers and demonstrate its capability to mediate field-free spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching in both orthogonally magnetized and synthetic antiferromagnetically coupled systems. Furthermore, we showcase that the spatial inhomogeneity brought about by wedge deposition can be suppressed by specific azimuthal engineering design, ideal for practical implementation. Our findings provide guidelines for effective manipulations of interlayer DMI strength, beneficial for the future design of SOT-MRAM or other spintronic devices utilizing interlayer DMI.

In ambient ionization mass spectrometry (MS), a customized metal inlet is typically adapted to the orifice of the mass spectrometer for ease of introduction of the sample. We herein explore that the metal inlet coiled with a copper wire (∼50 µm) can be directly used as an ion source to induce corona discharge-like processes for ionization of analytes in the gas phase. When the metal inlet is subjected to a high voltage in the mass spectrometer, the electric field provided by the mass spectrometer enables the generation of corona discharge to ionize volatile/semivolatile analytes derived from the sample in the condensed phase. The limit of detection for azulene derived from the aqueous sample was as low as ∼1 pM. Moreover, we also demonstrated the feasibility of coupling ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy with MS by using the metal inlet coiled with a thin copper wire as the interface. Integration of these two techniques enables the simultaneous acquisition of spectra from both instruments for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the sample. Furthermore, we showed that polar and nonpolar analytes in a mixture can be acquired in the same mass spectrum by simply depositing a sample droplet (∼20 µL) on a dielectric substrate near the copper wire-coiled metal inlet of the mass spectrometer. The ionization processes involved both electrospray ionization and corona discharge. To demonstrate the applicability of our method for detecting nonpolar and polar analytes in complex samples, we spiked a nonpolar analyte, benzo[a]pyrene, to a spice sample and successfully detected analytes with different polarities using our approach.

Permeable pavements help reduce surface temperatures and have been widely implemented in urban areas. This study utilized an in-use permeable pavement sidewalk in front of a mass rapid transit station in the Taipei city center of Taiwan to determine the actual pavement surface temperature performance. A neighboring asphalt road and impervious pavement were also monitored. With a full year of continuous monitoring, the results showed that the temperature of permeable pavement was 3.7 °C lower than that of impervious pavement and 4.5 °C lower than that of asphalt pavement in the hot season. The frequent rainfall in spring resulted in the smallest temperature differences between the different pavement types. The cooling effects of permeable pavement differed at the different air temperatures. At air temperatures lower than 15 °C, the differences among pavement surface temperatures were noticeable. However, when the air temperature was higher than 35 °C, the surface temperature of permeable pavement was not different from that of impervious pavement and was greater than 55 °C. Field observations were carried out to determine the effects on the apparent temperature and the future surface temperature of climate change scenarios. The results showed that permeable pavement could reduce the average apparent temperature to near the air temperature, and asphalt pavement could increase the apparent temperature by 1.2 °C, assuming that the pavement temperature completely affects the air temperature. With the good prediction ability of the machine learning approach and 15 environmental factors, the preliminary prediction showed the projected surface temperature change in Taipei city in 2033. In the worst-case scenario, the average impervious pavement temperature is as high as 39.12 °C, whereas the average permeable pavement temperature is 32.50 °C.

As a new type of reflective display, electrowetting display (EWD) has excellent dynamic display performance, which is based on polymer coatings. However, there are still some issues which can limit its performance, such as oil backflow and the hysteresis effect which reduces the stability and response speed of EWDs. Therefore, an effective driving waveform was proposed to overcome these drawbacks, which consisted of grayscale conversions between low gray levels and high gray levels. In the driving waveform, to stabilize the EWD at any initial grayscale (low gray levels/high gray levels), an exponential function waveform and an AC signal were used. Then, the grayscale conversion was performed by using an AC signal with a switching voltage to quickly achieve the target grayscale. Finally, another AC signal was used to stabilize the EWD at the target grayscale. A set of driving waveforms in grayscale ranging across four levels was designed using this method. According to the experimental results, oil backflow and the hysteresis effect could be effectively attenuated by the proposed driving waveforms. During conversion, the response speed of EWDs was boosted by at least 9.37% compared to traditional driving waveforms.
