RESUMEN

Treatment response assessment of rectal cancer patients is a critical component of personalized cancer care and it allows to identify suitable candidates for organ-preserving strategies. This pilot study employed a novel multi-omics approach combining MRI-based radiomic features and untargeted metabolomics to infer treatment response at staging. The metabolic signature highlighted how tumor cell viability is predictively down-regulated, while the response to oxidative stress was up-regulated in responder patients, showing significantly reduced oxoproline values at baseline compared to non-responder patients (p-value < 10-4). Tumors with a high degree of texture homogeneity, as assessed by radiomics, were more likely to achieve a major pathological response (p-value < 10-3). A machine learning classifier was implemented to summarize the multi-omics information and discriminate responders and non-responders. Combining all available radiomic and metabolomic features, the classifier delivered an AUC of 0.864 (± 0.083, p-value < 10-3) with a best-point sensitivity of 90.9% and a specificity of 81.8%. Our results suggest that a multi-omics approach, integrating radiomics and metabolomic data, can enhance the predictive value of standard MRI and could help to avoid unnecessary surgical treatments and their associated long-term complications.

Introduction: Accumulating evidence indicates that the amygdala exhibits early signs of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. However, it is still unknown whether the atrophy of distinct subfields of the amygdala also participates in the transition from healthy cognition to mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: Our sample was derived from the AD Neuroimaging Initiative 3 and consisted of 97 cognitively healthy (HC) individuals, sorted into two groups based on their clinical follow-up: 75 who remained stable (s-HC) and 22 who converted to MCI within 48 months (c-HC). Anatomical magnetic resonance (MR) images were analyzed using a semi-automatic approach that combines probabilistic methods and a priori information from ex vivo MR images and histology to segment and obtain quantitative structural metrics for different amygdala subfields in each participant. Spearman's correlations were performed between MR measures and baseline and longitudinal neuropsychological measures. We also included anatomical measurements of the whole amygdala, the hippocampus, a key target of AD-related pathology, and the whole cortical thickness as a test of spatial specificity. Results: Compared with s-HC individuals, c-HC subjects showed a reduced right amygdala volume, whereas no significant difference was observed for hippocampal volumes or changes in cortical thickness. In the amygdala subfields, we observed selected atrophy patterns in the basolateral nuclear complex, anterior amygdala area, and transitional area. Macro-structural alterations in these subfields correlated with variations of global indices of cognitive performance (measured at baseline and the 48-month follow-up), suggesting that amygdala changes shape the cognitive progression to MCI. Discussion: Our results provide anatomical evidence for the early involvement of the amygdala in the preclinical stages of AD. Highlights: Amygdala's atrophy marks elderly progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Amygdala's was observed within the basolateral and amygdaloid complexes.Macro-structural alterations were associated with cognitive decline.No atrophy was found in the hippocampus and cortex.

INTRODUCTION: 18F-Fluoro-deoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a supportive biomarker in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) diagnosis and its advanced analysis methods, including radiomics and machine learning (ML), were developed recently. The aim of this study was to evaluate the FDG-PET diagnostic performance in predicting a DLB versus Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis. METHODS: FDG-PET scans were visually and semi-quantitatively analyzed in 61 patients. Radiomics and ML analyses were performed, building five ML models: (1) clinical features; (2) visual and semi-quantitative PET features; (3) radiomic features; (4) all PET features; and (5) overall features. RESULTS: At follow-up, 34 patients had DLB and 27 had AD. At visual analysis, DLB PET signs were significantly more frequent in DLB, having the highest diagnostic accuracy (86.9%). At semi-quantitative analysis, the right precuneus, superior parietal, lateral occipital, and primary visual cortices showed significantly reduced uptake in DLB. The ML model 2 had the highest diagnostic accuracy (84.3%). DISCUSSION: FDG-PET is a valuable tool in DLB diagnosis, having visual and semi-quantitative analyses with the highest diagnostic accuracy at ML analyses.

The role of the thalamus in mediating the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was recently proposed in a model of communication and corroborated by imaging studies. However, a detailed analysis of LSD effects on nuclei-resolved thalamocortical connectivity is still missing. Here, in a group of healthy volunteers, we evaluated whether LSD intake alters the thalamocortical coupling in a nucleus-specific manner. Structural and resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data were acquired in a placebo-controlled study on subjects exposed to acute LSD administration. Structural MRI was used to parcel the thalamus into its constituent nuclei based on individual anatomy. Nucleus-specific changes of resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) connectivity were mapped using a seed-based approach. LSD intake selectively increased the thalamocortical functional connectivity (FC) of the ventral complex, pulvinar, and non-specific nuclei. Functional coupling was increased between these nuclei and sensory cortices that include the somatosensory and auditory networks. The ventral and pulvinar nuclei also exhibited increased FC with parts of the associative cortex that are dense in serotonin type 2A receptors. These areas are hyperactive and hyper-connected upon LSD intake. At subcortical levels, LSD increased the functional coupling among the thalamus's ventral, pulvinar, and non-specific nuclei, but decreased the striatal-thalamic connectivity. These findings unravel some LSD effects on the modulation of subcortical-cortical circuits and associated behavioral outputs.

In recent decades, an increasing number of studies on psychophysiology and, in general, on clinical medicine has employed the technique of facial thermal infrared imaging (IRI), which allows to obtain information about the emotional and physical states of the subjects in a completely non-invasive and contactless fashion. Several regions of interest (ROIs) have been reported in literature as salient areas for the psychophysiological characterization of a subject (i.e. nose tip and glabella ROIs). There is however a lack of studies focusing on the functional correlation among these ROIs and about the physiological basis of the relation existing between thermal IRI and vital signals, such as the electrodermal activity, i.e. the galvanic skin response (GSR). The present study offers a new methodology able to assess the functional connection between salient seed ROIs of thermal IRI and all the pixel of the face. The same approach was also applied considering as seed signal the GSR and its phasic and tonic components. Seed correlation analysis on 63 healthy volunteers demonstrated the presence of a common pathway regulating the facial thermal functionality and the electrodermal activity. The procedure was also tested on a pathological case study, finding a completely different pattern compared to the healthy cases. The method represents a promising tool in neurology, physiology and applied neurosciences.

Expanded newborn screening (NBS) is a preventive program that allows for the early identification of over 40 congenital endocrine-metabolic diseases by analyzing dried blood spot samples collected from the newborn's heel within 48-72 h of birth. The determination of amino acids and acyl-carnitines by Flow Injection Analysis Tandem Mass Spectrometry (FIA-MS/MS) may also highlight metabolic alterations resulting from external factors, such as maternal nutrition. In the present study, we developed a questionnaire to investigate the eating habits of 109 women during pregnancy and statistically correlated the results from the investigation on dietary habits with the data obtained by the NBS laboratory of Abruzzo region (Italy). Parameters such as smoking, physical activity, and the intake of iodized salt, drugs, and supplements were analyzed. This study aimed to highlight how maternal lifestyle, diet, and drug intake during pregnancy may affect the neonatal metabolic profile, possibly generating false positive or false negative results in the NBS test. The results pointed out how the knowledge of maternal nutrition and lifestyle may also be precious in preventing misinterpretations of the neonatal metabolic profile, thereby reducing unnecessary stress for newborns and their parents and limiting costs for the health system.

BACKGROUND: Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is an atypical psychedelic compound that exerts its effects through pleiotropic actions, mainly involving 1A/2A serotoninergic (5-HT) receptor subtypes. However, the mechanisms by which LSD promotes a reorganization of the brain's functional activity and connectivity are still partially unknown. METHODS: Our study analyzed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired from 15 healthy volunteers undergoing LSD single-dose intake. A voxelwise analysis investigated the alterations of the brain's intrinsic functional connectivity and local signal amplitude induced by LSD or by a placebo. Quantitative comparisons assessed the spatial overlap between these 2 indices of functional reorganization and the topography of receptor expression obtained from a publicly available collection of in vivo, whole-brain atlases. Finally, linear regression models explored the relationships between changes in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral aspects of the psychedelic experience. RESULTS: LSD elicited modifications of the cortical functional architecture that spatially overlapped with the distribution of serotoninergic receptors. Local signal amplitude and functional connectivity increased in regions belonging to the default mode and attention networks associated with high expression of 5-HT2A receptors. These functional changes correlate with the occurrence of simple and complex visual hallucinations. At the same time, a decrease in local signal amplitude and intrinsic connectivity was observed in limbic areas, which are dense with 5-HT1A receptors. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new insights into the neural processes underlying the brain network reconfiguration induced by LSD. It also identifies a topographical relationship between opposite effects on brain functioning and the spatial distribution of different 5-HT receptors.

Oncotype Dx Recurrence Score (RS) has been validated in patients with ER + /HER2 - invasive breast carcinoma to estimate patient risk of recurrence and guide the use of adjuvant chemotherapy. We investigated the role of MRI-based radiomics features extracted from the tumor and the peritumoral tissues to predict the risk of tumor recurrence. A total of 62 patients with biopsy-proved ER + /HER2 - breast cancer who underwent pre-treatment MRI and Oncotype Dx were included. An RS > 25 was considered discriminant between low-intermediate and high risk of tumor recurrence. Two readers segmented each tumor. Radiomics features were extracted from the tumor and the peritumoral tissues. Partial least square (PLS) regression was used as the multivariate machine learning algorithm. PLS ß-weights of radiomics features included the 5% features with the largest ß-weights in magnitude (top 5%). Leave-one-out nested cross-validation (nCV) was used to achieve hyperparameter optimization and evaluate the generalizable performance of the procedure. The diagnostic performance of the radiomics model was assessed through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. A null hypothesis probability threshold of 5% was chosen (p < 0.05). The exploratory analysis for the complete dataset revealed an average absolute correlation among features of 0.51. The nCV framework delivered an AUC of 0.76 (p = 1.1∙10-3). When combining "early" and "peak" DCE images of only T or TST, a tendency toward statistical significance was obtained for TST with an AUC of 0.61 (p = 0.05). The 47 features included in the top 5% were balanced between T and TST (23 and 24, respectively). Moreover, 33/47 (70%) were texture-related, and 25/47 (53%) were derived from high-resolution images (1 mm). A radiomics-based machine learning approach shows the potential to accurately predict the recurrence risk in early ER + /HER2 - breast cancer patients.

Background/Purpose: To identify brain hubs that are behaviorally relevant for neglect after stroke as well as to characterize their functional architecture of communication. Methods: Twenty acute right hemisphere damaged patients underwent neuropsychological and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging sessions. Spatial neglect was assessed by means of the Center of Cancellation on the Bells Cancellation Test. For each patient, resting-state functional connectivity matrices were derived by adopting a brain parcellation scheme consisting of 153 nodes. For every node, we extracted its betweenness centrality (BC) defined as the portion of all shortest paths in the connectome involving such node. Then, neglect hubs were identified as those regions showing a high correlation between their BC and neglect scores. Results: A first set of neglect hubs was identified in multiple systems including dorsal attention and ventral attention, default mode, and frontoparietal executive-control networks within the damaged hemisphere as well as in the posterior and anterior cingulate cortex. Such cortical regions exhibited a loss of BC and increased (i.e., less efficient) weighted shortest path length (WSPL) related to severe neglect. Conversely, a second group of neglect hubs found in visual and motor networks, in the undamaged hemisphere, exhibited a pathological increase of BC and reduction of WSPL associated with severe neglect. Conclusion: The topological reorganization of the brain in neglect patients might reflect a maladaptive shift in processing spatial information from higher level associative-control systems to lower level visual and sensory-motor processing areas after a right hemisphere lesion.

Background/Purpose: To investigate the association between the degree of spatial neglect and the changes of brain system segregation (SyS; i.e., the ratio of the extent to which brain networks interact internally and with each other) after stroke. Methods: A cohort of 20 patients with right hemisphere lesion was submitted to neuropsychological assessment as well as to resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging session at acute stage after stroke. The severity of spatial neglect was quantified using the Center of Cancellation (CoC) scores of the Bells cancellation test. For each patient, resting-state functional connectivity (FC) matrices were assessed by implementing a brain parcellation of nine networks that included the visual network, dorsal attention network (DAN), ventral attention network (VAN), sensorimotor network (SMN), auditory network, cingulo-opercular network, language network, frontoparietal network, and default mode network (DMN). For each patient and each network, we then computed the SyS derived by subtracting the between-network FC from the within-network FC (normalized by the within-network FC). Finally, for each network, the CoC scores were correlated with the SyS. Results: The correlational analyses indicated a negative association between CoC and SyS in the DAN, VAN, SMN, and DMN (q < 0.05 false discovery rate [FDR]-corrected). Patients with more severe spatial neglect exhibited lower SyS and vice versa. Conclusion: The loss of segregation in multiple and specific networks provides a functional framework for the deficits in spatial and nonspatial attention and motor/exploratory ability observed in neglect patients.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a frequent aortic disease. If the diameter of the aorta is larger than 5 cm, an open surgical repair (OSR) or an endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) are recommended. To prevent possible complications (i.e., endoleaks), EVAR-treated patients need to be monitored for 5 years following the intervention, using computed tomography angiography (CTA). However, this radiological method involves high radiation exposure in terms of CTA/year. In such a context, the study of peripheral-blood-circulating extracellular vesicles (pbcEVs) has great potential to identify biomarkers for EVAR complications. We analyzed several phenotypes of pbcEVs using polychromatic flow cytometry in 22 patients with AAA eligible for EVAR. From each enrolled patient, peripheral blood samples were collected at AAA diagnosis, and after 1, 6, and 12 months following EVAR implantation, i.e. during the diagnostic follow-up protocol. Patients developing an endoleak displayed a significant decrease in activated-platelet-derived EVs between the baseline condition and 6 months after EVAR intervention. Furthermore, we also observed, that 1 month after EVAR implantation, patients developing an endoleak showed higher concentrations of activated-endothelial-derived EVs than patients who did not develop one, suggesting their great potential as a noninvasive and specific biomarker for early identification of EVAR complications.

Brettanomyces bruxellensis is found in several fermented matrices and produces relevant alterations to the wine quality. The methods usually used to identify B. bruxellensis contamination are based on conventional microbiological techniques that require long procedures (15 days), causing the yeast to spread in the meantime. Recently, a flow cytometry kit for the rapid detection (1-2 h) of B. bruxellensis in wine has been developed. The feasibility of the method was assessed in a synthetic medium as well as in wine samples by detecting B. bruxellensis in the presence of other yeast species (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia spp.) and at the concentrations that produce natural contaminations (up to 105 cells/mL), as well as at lower concentrations (103-102 cells/mL). Wine samples naturally contaminated by B. bruxellensis or inoculated with four different strains of B. bruxellensis species together with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia spp., were analyzed by flow cytometry. Plate counts were carried out in parallel to flow cytometry. We provide evidence that flow cytometry allows the rapid detection of B. bruxellensis in simple and complex mixtures. Therefore, this technique has great potential for the detection of B. bruxellensis and could allow preventive actions to reduce wine spoilage.

BACKGROUND: The high co-occurrence of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients suggests overlapping pathophysiology. However, little is known about the neural correlates of SSD and their possible interactions with PD. Existing studies have shown that SSD is associated with reduced task-evoked activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a central node of the default-mode network (DMN). SSD is also associated with abnormal γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content, a marker of local inhibitory tone and regional hypoactivity, in the same area when SSD co-occurs with PD. OBJECTIVES: To disentangle the individual and shared effects of SSD and PD on mPFC neurotransmission and connectivity patterns and help disclose the neural mechanisms of comorbidity in the PD population. METHODS: The study cohort included 18 PD patients with SSD (PD + SSD), 18 PD patients, 13 SSD patients who did not exhibit neurologic disorders, and 17 healthy subjects (HC). Proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy evaluated GABA levels within a volume of interest centered on the mPFC. Resting-state functional MR imaging investigated the region's functional connectivity patterns. RESULTS: Compared to HC or PD groups, the mPFC of SSD subjects exhibited higher GABA levels and connectivity. Higher mPFC connectivity involved DMN regions in SSD patients without PD and regions of the executive and attentional networks (EAN) in patients with PD comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS: Aberrant reconfigurations of connectivity patterns between the mPFC and the EAN are distinct features of the PD + SSD comorbidity. © 2022 The Authors. AIM: The present study aimed to examine meniscal morphology in an adult population in vivo through computed tomographic images, including research into morphological differences related to osteoarthritis, ageing and the meniscal location within the knee joint and a proposal for a supplementation of the current morphological classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomographic images of the knee for 118 patients were retrieved from the picture archiving and communication system of our Institute and included in this retrospective study. Each meniscus was subject to manual segmentation and converted into three-dimensional surfaces. The degree of osteoarthritis was determined for both the medial and lateral compartments of the knee. Statistical analysis was performed to search for any morphological difference related to osteoarthritis, ageing or the meniscal location within the knee joint. Furthermore, additional subcategories of the current morphological classification were proposed and applied to each meniscal reconstruction. RESULTS: We did not observe the presence of discoid or V-shaped menisci. No statistically significant difference was found related to osteoarthritis, ageing or the meniscal location within the knee joint. A prevalence of morphological subcategories indicating a symmetry of the width of the anterior and posterior horns, both with rounded shape, emerged. CONCLUSION: Taking advantage of non-invasive imaging, this research gives new insights into the morphology of knee menisci in an adult population in vivo. Discoid menisci were rare in our sample and the frequency of V-shaped menisci may have been overestimated in previous studies. Osteoarthritis and ageing may not influence meniscal morphology and no significant morphological differences between lateral and medial menisci were observed. The suggested classification integrates the currently used meniscal morphological classification, increasing the quantity of anatomical information on the menisci of the knee joint, thus improving diagnosis and patient treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To (1) compare bladder cancer (BC) muscle invasiveness among three b-values using a contrast-free approach based on Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS), to (2) determine if muscle-invasiveness assessment is affected by the reader experience, and to (3) compare BC conspicuity among three b-values, qualitatively and quantitatively. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients who underwent a bladder MRI on a 3.0-T scanner were enrolled. The gold standard was histopathology report following transurethral resection of BC. Three sets of images, including T2w and different b-values for DWI, set 1 (b = 1000 s/mm2), set 2 (b = 1500 s/mm2), and set 3 (b = 2000 s/mm2), were reviewed by three differently experienced readers. Descriptive statistics and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) were calculated. Comparisons among readers and DWI sets were performed with the Wilcoxon test. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed. Areas under the curves (AUCs) and pairwise comparison were calculated. RESULTS: AUCs of muscle-invasiveness assessment ranged from 0.896 to 0.984 (reader 1), 0.952-0.968 (reader 2), and 0.952-0.984 (reader 3) without significant differences among different sets and readers (p > 0.05). The mean conspicuity qualitative scores were higher in Set 1 (2.21-2.33), followed by Set 2 (2-2.16) and Set 3 (1.82-2.14). The quantitative conspicuity assessment showed that mean normalized intensity of tumor was significantly higher in Set 2 (4.217-4.737) than in Set 1 (3.923-4.492) and Set 3 (3.833-3.992) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Muscle invasiveness can be assessed with high accuracy using a contrast-free protocol with T2W and DWI, regardless of reader's experience. b = 1500 s/mm2 showed the best tumor delineation, while b = 1000 s/mm2 allowed for better tumor-wall interface assessment.

RESUMEN

Brain tumor surgery requires a delicate tradeoff between complete removal of neoplastic tissue while minimizing loss of brain function. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) have emerged as valuable tools for non-invasive assessment of human brain function and are now used to determine brain regions that should be spared to prevent functional impairment after surgery. However, image analysis requires different software packages, mainly developed for research purposes and often difficult to use in a clinical setting, preventing large-scale diffusion of presurgical mapping. We developed a specialized software able to implement an automatic analysis of multimodal MRI presurgical mapping in a single application and to transfer the results to the neuronavigator. Moreover, the imaging results are integrated in a commercially available wearable device using an optimized mixed-reality approach, automatically anchoring 3-dimensional holograms obtained from MRI with the physical head of the patient. This will allow the surgeon to virtually explore deeper tissue layers highlighting critical brain structures that need to be preserved, while retaining the natural oculo-manual coordination. The enhanced ergonomics of this procedure will significantly improve accuracy and safety of the surgery, with large expected benefits for health care systems and related industrial investors.

Background: Altitude hypoxia exposure may produce cognitive detrimental adaptations and damage to the brain. We aimed at investigating the effects of trekking and hypoxia on neuropsychological and neuroimaging measures. Methods: We recruited two balanced groups of healthy adults, trekkers (n = 12, 6 F and 6 M, trekking in altitude hypoxia) and controls (gender- and age-matched), who were tested before (baseline), during (5,000 m, after 9 days of trekking), and after the expedition for state anxiety, depression, verbal fluency, verbal short-term memory, and working memory. Personality and trait anxiety were also assessed at a baseline level. Neuroimaging measures of cerebral perfusion (arterial spin labeling), white-matter microstructural integrity (diffusion tensor imaging), and resting-state functional connectivity (functional magnetic resonance imaging) were assessed before and after the expedition in the group of trekkers. Results: At baseline, the trekkers showed lower trait anxiety (p = 0.003) and conscientiousness (p = 0.03) than the control group. State anxiety was lower in the trekkers throughout the study (p < 0.001), and state anxiety and depression decreased at the end of the study in both groups (p = 0.043 and p = 0.007, respectively). Verbal fluency increased at the end of the study in both groups (p < 0.001), whereas verbal short-term memory and working memory performance did not change. No significant differences between before and after the expedition were found for neuroimaging measures. Conclusions: We argue that the observed differences in the neuropsychological measures mainly reflect aspecific familiarity and learning effects due to the repeated execution of the same questionnaires and task. The present results thus suggest that detrimental effects on neuropsychological and neuroimaging measures do not necessarily occur as a consequence of short-term exposure to altitude hypoxia up to 5,000 m, especially in the absence of altitude sickness.

PURPOSE: Dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) perfusion-weighted MR imaging (PWI) is increasingly used in clinical neuroimaging for a range of conditions. More highly concentrated GBCAs (e.g., gadobutrol) are often preferred for DSC imaging because it is thought that more Gd is present in the volume of interest during first pass for a given equivalent injection rate. However, faster injection of a less viscous GBCA (e.g., gadoteridol) might generate a more compact and narrower contrast bolus thus obviating any perceived benefit of higher Gd concentration. This preliminary study aimed to analyze and compare DSC examinations in the healthy brain hemisphere of patients with brain tumors using gadobutrol and gadoteridol administered at injection rates of 4 and 6 mL/s. METHODS: Thirty-nine brain tumor patients studied with DSC-PWI were evaluated. A simplified gamma-variate model function was applied to calculate the mean peak, area under the curve (AUC), and full-width at half-maximum (FHWM) of concentration-time curves derived from ΔR2* signals at four different regions-of-interest (ROIs). Qualitative assessment of the derived CBV maps was also performed independently by 2 neuroradiologists. RESULTS: No qualitative or quantitative differences between the two GBCAs were observed when administered at a flow rate of 4 mL/s. At a flow rate of 6 mL/s, gadoteridol showed lower FWHM values. CONCLUSION: Gadobutrol and gadoteridol are equivalent for clinical assessment of qualitative CBV maps and quantitative perfusion parameters (FHWM) at a flow rate of 4 mL/s. At 6 mL/s, gadoteridol produces a narrower bolus shape and potentially improves quantitative assessment of perfusion parameters.

RESUMEN

Currently, several pathologies have corresponding and specific diagnostic and therapeutic branches of interest focused on early and correct detection, as well as the best therapeutic approach. Radiology never ceases to develop newer technologies in order to give patients a clear, safe, early, and precise diagnosis; furthermore, in the last few years diagnostic imaging panoramas have been extended to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. On the other hand, clinical and laboratory tests, like flow cytometry and the techniques found in the "omics" sciences, aim to detect microscopic elements, like extracellular vesicles, with the highest specificity and sensibility for disease detection. If these scientific branches started to cooperate, playing a conjugated role in pathology diagnosis, what could be the results? Our review seeks to give a quick overview of recent state of the art research which investigates correlations between extracellular vesicles and the known radiological features useful for diagnosis.
