RESUMEN

This study reports two deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on alkaline imide salts with asymmetric anions as functional electrolytes for supercapacitor (SC) application. The eutectic mixture of sodium (fluorosulfonyl) (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (NaFTFSI) or sodium cyano-trifluoromethanesulfonyl imide (NaTFSICN) with ethylene carbonate (EC) delivers a non-flammable and stable liquid. The eutectic diagrams of the electrolytes directed to an optimal composition (wsalt =0.25), hinging to that of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes, i. e., 1 mol L-1 . The volumetric properties of the DESs revealed a "stacking" effect, reflecting a strong coordination bond between the imide and EC anions without solvating the Na+ cations. The DES transport properties (i. e., viscosity, conductivity, and ionicity) and temperature variations designate a high organization, similar to ionic liquids. The DESs, when coupled with activated carbon electrodes in a two-electrode symmetric configuration, yield specific capacities of 150 F g-1 at a normalized current density of 0.5 A g-1 (and 120 F g-1 at 2 A g-1 ). The SC maintained 80 % of its initial capacity beyond 100 h of floating at an operating voltage of 2.4 V and showed a 150 mV per hour potential loss under self-discharge. The devised eutectic mixtures offer a promising new pathway for simple, safe, and effective electrolytes for SC applications.

RESUMEN

This study compares the physicochemical properties of six electrolytes comprising of three salts: LiFTFSI, NaFTFSI and KFTFSI in two solvent mixtures, the binary (3EC/7EMC) and the ternary (EC/PC/3DMC). The transport properties (conductivity, viscosity) as a function of temperature and concentration were modeled using the extended Jones-Dole-Kaminsky equation, the Arrhenius model, and the Eyring theory of transition state for activated complexes. Results are discussed in terms of ionicity, solvation shell, and cross-interactions between electrolyte components. The application of the six formulated electrolytes in symmetrical activated carbon (AC)//AC supercapacitors (SCs) was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic cycling with potential limitation (GCPL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and accelerated aging. Results revealed that the geometrical flexibility of the FTFSI anion allows it to access and diffuse easily in AC whereas its counter ions (Li+ , Na+ or K+ ) can remain trapped in porosity. However, this drawback was partially resolved by mixing LiFTFSI and KFTFSI salts in the electrolyte.

RESUMEN

Underlying drivers of species extinctions need to be better understood for effective conservation of biodiversity. Nearly half of all amphibian species are at risk of extinction, and pollution may be a significant threat as seasonal high-level agrochemical use overlaps with critical windows of larval development. The potential of environmental chemicals to reduce the fitness of future generations may have profound ecological and evolutionary implications. This study characterized effects of male developmental exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the anti-androgenic pesticide linuron over two generations of offspring in Xenopus tropicalis frogs. The adult male offspring of pesticide-exposed fathers (F1) showed reduced body size, decreased fertility, and signs of endocrine system disruption. Impacts were further propagated to the grand-offspring (F2), providing evidence of transgenerational effects in amphibians. The adult F2 males demonstrated increased weight and fat body palmitoleic-to-palmitic acid ratio, and decreased plasma glucose levels. The study provides important cross-species evidence of paternal epigenetic inheritance and pollutant-induced transgenerational toxicity, supporting a causal and complex role of environmental contamination in the ongoing species extinctions, particularly of amphibians.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Hospital systems are adopting strict nicotine-free policies excluding hiring individuals who smoke, including residents for graduate medical training. This study was conducted to (1) determine medical schools' awareness of these policies, (2) awareness of their students' smoking behaviors, and (3) the smoking cessation programs that they provide. METHODS: A survey was developed to learn about the smoking policies of medical schools in the United States: how school leadership estimates smoking prevalence among their students, what those estimates are, and what programs are in place to help students quit smoking. Questions were asked about awareness of policies restricting hiring smokers including applicants for residency training. Opinions were solicited on including smoking status in medical school applications. The online survey was sent to the Deans of student affairs at US medical schools. RESULTS: Of the 160 schools invited to participate, 84 (53%) responded. Most medical schools (92%) are smoke-free and 97% have policies specifically prohibiting tobacco use on campus. Estimates of student smoking prevalence varied from 0% to 34% with a mean of 6%. More than half of schools (52%) had no smoking-cessation programs to help students. Despite recent trends in policies that prohibit smokers from being hired into residency training programs, only 22% were aware of such policies. There were no statistically significant differences by school size, location or category (allopathic, osteopathic, public or private). CONCLUSIONS: Medical schools need to be aware of new hiring policies and take steps to identify and help their students quit smoking to ensure all students can secure residency training upon graduation. IMPLICATIONS: This study draws attention to recent policies that preclude hiring medical students who smoke for post graduate (residency) training. Our study demonstrates a lack of appreciation of these policies by medical school administration in the United States. Our study also provides information on smoking rates of medical students, as well as the prevalence and use of smoking cessation programs available through schools of medicine. The study supports the need for medical schools to identify and aid students who smoke to become nicotine-free so that they can secure residency training positions.

RESUMEN

Continuous peripheral nerve blocks are used in the management of pain following surgical procedures. They can also be used in patients with cancer-related pain, to improve sleep quality, reduce opioid requirements and their side effects. We describe two cancer patients in whom interscalene brachial plexus catheters were used on an outpatient basis, allowing them to travel, decrease their opioid use, and improve their ability to perform routine activities.
