BACKGROUND: Kyphoplasty-associated cement extravasation into surrounding tissue and vasculature can lead to life-threatening complications. We present a rare case of significant inferior vena cava cement burden that resulted in pulmonary embolism. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of severe osteoporosis, recurrent falls, and spinal compression fracture status post-kyphoplasty of the L4-L5 vertebrae, presents to the emergency department 2 days post-vertebral kyphoplasty due to chest pain, back pain, and dyspnea. Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen showed a metallic density within the inferior vena cava extending superiorly approximately 10 cm from the vertebral L5 level. She was also found to have right lower lobe pneumonia. The patient finished a 10-day course of antibiotics and was discharged home with a 1-month long course of anticoagulation with apixaban per recommendations of a multidisciplinary team consisting of Hematology/Oncology, Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, and Orthopedic Surgery. Unfortunately, the patient was readmitted a month later with shortness of breath. Work up was notable for an influenza type A infection and computed tomography findings of pulmonary cement embolism. The respiratory distress was resolved with supportive care. Despite pulmonary cement burden, the multidisciplinary care team recommended no further anticoagulation. Patient was discharged home with close clinical follow-up and 6 months has since passed at the time of this report without reported complications. CONCLUSIONS: A large cement burden in the inferior vena cava leading to pulmonary cement embolism is a rare event. A high burden of cement predisposes development of pulmonary embolism. A short course of anticoagulation may only be needed for asymptomatic patients.

This experiment was performed to evaluate the inclusion impact of various levels of jack mackerel meal (JMM) in olive flounder (P. olivaceus) feeds substituting 50% FM by duck by-product meal (DBM) on growth, feed availability, and economic efficiency. Seven experimental diets were prepared. The control (Con) diet contained 60% FM. Fifty percent FM in the Con diet was substituted with DBM, and then the graded levels (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) of JMM were added instead of FM, named the DJ0, DJ10, DJ20, DJ30, DJ40, and DJ50 diets, respectively. All feeds were assigned to triplicate fish groups. At the end of 56 days' feeding, fish fed the DJ40 and DJ50 diets exhibited comparable weight gain and specific growth rate to fish fed the Con diet. Higher feed consumption was observed in fish fed the Con, DJ40, and DJ50 diets compared to fish fed the DJ0 and DJ10 diets. Lower feed conversion ratio was observed in fish fed the Con diet compared to fish fed the DJ0, DJ10, DJ20, and DJ30 diets. Furthermore, the DJ50 diet led to the highest economic profit index (EPI). In conclusion, inclusion of 50% JMM in the olive flounder diet replacing 50% FM with DBM seems to be the most recommendable dietary treatment based on growth and feed consumption of olive flounder and EPI.

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the changes in untreated subscapularis in patients who underwent supraspinatus repair and to evaluate the factors related to the changes in the subscapularis. Methods: A cohort of patients who underwent isolated supraspinatus repair with preservation of the subscapularis was reviewed. Changes in the subscapularis, including any newly formed lesion and aggravation of an existing lesion, were evaluated 12 months postoperatively on magnetic resonance imaging along with an examination to identify causative factors after supraspinatus repair. Clinical scores were compared between patients with and without subscapularis changes. Results: A total of 528 patients were reviewed. Changes in the subscapularis, including newly formed lesions and aggravation of an existing lesion, were shown in 90 patients (17.0%). Upon regression analysis, changes in the subscapularis were associated with the initial existence of a subscapularis lesion (grade I: p = 0.042, grade II: p = 0.025), an accompanying biceps lesion (p = 0.038), and a retear of the repaired supraspinatus (p = 0.024). No significant differences were shown in clinical scores between patients with and without subscapularis changes after supraspinatus repair. Conclusions: Untreated asymptomatic subscapularis may undergo morphological changes even after repair of the torn supraspinatus. Preoperative subscapularis lesions, biceps long head pathology, and retears of the repaired supraspinatus were associated with subscapularis pathology in patients who underwent supraspinatus repair.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how exposure to and perception of community trauma creates a mental health burden. This study aimed to examine the psychological distress trends among community residents in acute stress reaction, acute stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder phases following the Seoul Halloween crowd crush. METHODS: A three-wave repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted with participants after the incident. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with post hoc Bonferroni test was adopted to examine temporal changes in psychological distress and psychological outcomes resulting from media impacts. A two-way ANCOVA was adopted to examine the interaction effects of time and relevance to victims on psychological distress. RESULTS: A total of 807, 1,703, and 2,220 individuals participated in the three waves. Anxiety (estimated mean [standard error of the mean]: 2.28 [0.03] vs. 2.12 [0.02] vs. 2.03 [0.02]; P < 0.001), depression (2.22 [0.03] vs. 2.01 [0.02] vs. 1.90 [0.02]; P < 0.001), and anger (2.70 [0.03] vs. 2.66 [0.02] vs. 2.49 [0.02]; P < 0.001) gradually improved. However, sense of safety initially worsened and did not recover well (2.96 [0.03] vs. 2.75 [0.02] vs. 2.77 [0.02]; P < 0.001). The interaction effect of time and relevance to the victim were significant in depression (P for interaction = 0.049), anger (P for interaction = 0.016), and sense of safety (P for interaction = 0.004). Among participants unrelated to the victim, those exposed to graphics exhibited higher levels of anxiety (2.09 [0.02] vs. 1.87 [0.07]; P = 0.002), depression (1.99 [0.02] vs. 1.83 [0.07]; P = 0.020), and anger (2.71 [0.03] vs. 2.47 [0.08]; P = 0.003) at W2 and higher anger (2.49 [0.02] vs. 2.31 [0.06]; P = 0.005) at W3. CONCLUSION: Community residents indirectly exposed to trauma also experienced psychological distress in the early stages after the incident. A significant impact of media which might have served as a conduit for unfiltered graphics and rumors was also indicated.

INTRODUCTION: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of early childhood home-visiting interventions led by nurses have been conducted mainly in Western countries, whereas such trials have been limited in non-Western cultures, including Asia. In South Korea, a national nurse home visit programme (Korea Early Childhood Home-visiting Intervention (KECHI)) was developed in 2020 and launched throughout the country. We designed a pragmatic RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of KECHI on child health and development and maternal health. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Eligible participants will be pregnant women at <37 weeks of gestation with risk factor scores of 2 or over, who are sufficiently fluent in Korean to read and answer the questionnaire written in Korean and live in districts where the KECHI services are available. Eight hundred participants will be recruited from the general community and through the District Public Health Centres. The participants will be randomised 1:1 to KECHI plus usual care or usual care. KECHI encompasses 25-29 home visits, group activities and community service linkage. Participants will complete assessments at baseline (<37 weeks gestation), 6 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months post partum. The six primary outcomes will be (1) home environment (assessed by Infant/Toddler Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment), (2) emergency department visits due to injuries, (3) child development (assessed using Korean Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III), (4) breastfeeding duration, (5) maternal self-rated health and (6) community service linkage. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This trial has received full ethical approval from the Institutional Review Board of the Seoul National University Hospital. Written consent will be obtained from the participants. The results will be reported at conferences, disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and used by the Korean government to expand the KECHI services. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04749888.

BACKGROUND: Modern neurosurgery has undergone significant evolution to include minimally invasive procedures, with the supraorbital approach (SOA) being a prime example. In this study, we aim to explore the surgical techniques and outcomes of this approach in the surgical treatment of frontal lobe, anterior skull base, and parasellar lesions. METHODS: This study included 33 patients aged 36-83 years who underwent surgery using the SOA for lesions in the inferior frontal lobe, anterior skull base, and parasellar area between 2015 and 2024. There were 25 cases of meningioma, 2 cases of brain abscess, 2 cases of glioma, and one case each of craniopharyngioma, hemangioma, metastasis, and Rathke's cleft cyst. The medical data and follow-up results were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The mean size of lesion was 3.38±3.05 cm. The mean follow-up period was 48.8 months. Gross total resection was achieved in 25 patients (75.8%). There were no perioperative deaths, cases of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, or infections. Two cases of morbidity were reported as complications: one case of delayed intracerebral hemorrhage and one case of infarction due to vascular injury. All patients exhibited satisfactory cosmetic results. CONCLUSION: In comparison to the conventional pterional approach, the SOA represents a safe and effective keyhole method for the removal of both extra-axial and intra-axial skull base tumors. This is particularly beneficial for lesions in the orbitofrontal region and parasellar area, as it allows for minimal disruption of normal brain parenchyma. Moreover, the SOA promotes a swift recovery and short hospital stay. Additionally, the SOA yields superior cosmetic results, including the prevention of temporalis muscle atrophy.

Antipsychotic polypharmacy is commonly used in clinical settings, with a growing trend in using long-acting injections to mitigate many side effects of polypharmacy. A previous study demonstrated that long-acting aripiprazole once-monthly (AOM) injection increased treatment adherence, restored functionality, and improved symptoms. However, there is insufficient evidence to demonstrate the therapeutic effects of AOM in polypharmacy practice. This observational study aimed to investigate the real-world clinical benefits and effectiveness of AOM by assessing changes in drug dosage, the number of drugs, clinical functioning, psychotic symptoms, and the duration of drug efficacy. Study participants were recruited from eight study sites, with the baseline visit marking the initiation of drug treatment. Clinical and demographic data were collected from medical records at screening, baseline, and months 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12. Over 12 months, we analyzed changes in drug dosage, the number of drugs, and scores of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale-6 (PANSS-6), Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), and Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGIS). Data from 139 participants were analyzed. Total 12-month antipsychotic doses calculated in chlorpromazine equivalents (CPE) were reduced by 32.6%. A comparison of total monthly antipsychotic doses in CPE between the first and last months showed a 24.6% reduction in the dose. Additionally, the quantity of benzodiazepine tablets/capsules, total benzodiazepine doses calculated in lorazepam equivalents, and quantity of tablets/capsules of mood stabilizers, anticholinergics, and beta blockers were significantly reduced. GAF scores increased by 14.1% over 12 months, and PANSS-6 total scores reduced by 17.3% over 12 months, with significant differences observed from month 1 and baseline, respectively. The scores steadily improved until month 9 compared to those of the previous months, continuing to improve through month 12. The CGI-S score reduced by 14.3% over 12 months, showing a significant decrease from month 1 and a steady improvement until month 6, maintaining this improvement until month 12. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the early effectiveness of AOM in treating Korean patients with schizophrenia on polypharmacy. AOM improved function and clinical symptoms in patients with schizophrenia from treatment onset and caused a decrease in the quantity and dosage of drugs taken by the patients.

To present an efficient method for fabricating artificial kidney stones with acoustic and physical properties to assess their fragmentation efficiency under shock waves and laser lithotripsy for very hard stones. The mixture ratio of super-hard plaster and water was adjusted to produce artificial kidney stones for comparison with > 95% human genuine calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) and uric acid (UA) stones. Acoustic and physical properties, such as wave speed, stone hardness, density, compressive strength, and stone-free rates under shock-wave and laser lithotripsy, were assessed. The longitudinal wave speed of artificial stones prepared at a plaster-to-water ratio of 15:3 closely matched that of COM stones. Similarly, the transverse wave speed of artificial stones prepared at a plaster-to-water ratio of 15:3 to 15:5 aligned with that of COM stones. Stone fragmentation using shock-wave of artificial stones with mixed ratios ranging from 15:3 to 15:5 resembled that of COM stones. The Vickers hardness was similar to that of artificial stones produced with a mixing ratio of 15:3, similar to that of COM stones, while that of artificial stones produced with a mixing ratio of 15:5 was similar to that of UA stones. Density-wise, artificial stones with mixing ratios of 15:4 and 15:5 resembled COM stones. Compressive strength test results did not confirm the similarity between natural and artificial stones. The stone fragmentation using laser showed that stones produced with higher moisture content at a mixing ratio of 15:6 were similar to COM stones. This novel method for fabricating artificial kidney stones could be used to provide reliable materials for lithotripsy research.

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) and branchio-otic (BO) syndromes are characterized by anomalies affecting the ears, often accompanied by hearing loss, as well as abnormalities in the branchial arches and renal system. These syndromes exhibit a broad spectrum of phenotypes and a complex genomic landscape, with significant contributions from the EYA1 gene and the SIX gene family, including SIX1 and SIX5. Due to their diverse phenotypic presentations, which can overlap with other genetic syndromes, molecular genetic confirmation is essential. As sequencing technologies advance, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is increasingly used in rare disease diagnostics. We explored the genomic landscape of 23 unrelated Korean families with typical or atypical BOR/BO syndrome using a stepwise approach: targeted panel sequencing and exome sequencing (Step 1), multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) with copy number variation screening (Step 2), and WGS (Step 3). Integrating WGS into our diagnostic pipeline detected structure variations, including cryptic inversion and complex genomic rearrangement, eventually enhancing the diagnostic yield to 91%. Our findings expand the genomic architecture of BOR/BO syndrome and highlight the need for WGS to address the genetic diagnosis of clinically heterogeneous rare diseases.

Cesium lanthanide chloride (Cs3LnCl6), a recently developed class of lanthanide-based zero-dimensional metal halides, has garnered a significant amount of interest because of its potential applications in scintillators, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors. Although cesium lanthanide chloride demonstrates exceptional scintillator properties, conventional synthesis methods involving solid-state and solution-phase techniques are complex and limited on the reaction scale. This study presents a facile mechanochemical synthesis method for producing Cs3CeCl6, Cs3TbCl6, and Cs3EuCl6 metal halides on a 5 g scale. These materials exhibit intense blue-violet, green, and red emissions upon ultraviolet excitation, with high photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 54% to 93%. Furthermore, Cs3CeCl6, Cs3TbCl6, and Cs3EuCl6 metal halides exhibit intense radioluminescence spanning from the ultraviolet to the visible region. This research shows the potential of the scalable mechanochemical synthesis of lanthanide-based metal halides for the advancement of luminescent materials for scintillators.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the treatment outcomes in patients with advanced-stage olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) who received induction chemotherapy (IC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical data of 38 patients with advanced-stage ONB who received initial IC were retrospectively analyzed. The response was defined using the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors version 1.1. Patients with complete remission or partial remission were defined as responders. RESULTS: Seventeen (44.7%) patients responded to IC. The response rate was higher in patients with high Hyams grade tumor (III/IV) compared to those with low-grade tumors (I/II) (60% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.038). Overall, the 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate was 76.0%. Among nonresponders to IC, a significant difference in 5-year CSS rates was observed between surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) (100%) versus definitive RT or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) (68.6%) (log-rank p = 0.006). However, for responders, there was no significant difference in 5-year CSS rates between surgery with adjuvant therapy (75%) and definitive RT or CRT (51.1%) (log-rank p = 0.536). When only high-grade tumors were considered among responders, the 5-year CSS rate was significantly higher in patients who received RT or CRT (51.4%) compared to those who underwent surgery with adjuvant therapy (0%) (log-rank p = 0.008). CONCLUSION: In advanced-stage ONB, RT or CRT may be preferable for high-grade tumor responding to IC. Higher response rate and a potential role for induction IC in determining the optimal definitive treatment modality suggest a positive role for advanced-stage high-grade ONB.

There is a lack of comparative studies examining changes in vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain with head velocity in the video head impulse test (vHIT) of patients with vestibular neuritis (VN). Thus, the purpose of present study was to identify the effect of head impulse velocity on the gain of the VOR during the vHIT in patients with VN. Head impulse velocities ranging from 100%-200°/s [158.08 ± 23.00°/s in the horizontal canal (HC), 124.88 ± 14.80°/s in the anterior canal (AC), and 122.92 ± 14.26°/s in the posterior canal (PC) were used during vHIT trials of 32 patients with VN. Differences in VOR gain on the ipsilesional and contralesional sides according to head velocity were analyzed. The mean VOR gains in ipsilesional side were decreased to 0.47 in the HC and 0.56 in the AC, leading to marked asymmetry compared to the contralesional side; PC gain was relatively preserved at 0.82 in the ipsilesional side. The mean head impulse velocity applied during vHIT trials in each semicircular canal plane did not differ bilaterally. On the contralesional side, VOR gain was negatively correlated with head impulse velocity (R2=0.25, P=.004 in HC; R2=0.17, P=.021 in AC; R2=0.24, P=.005 in PC), while VOR gain on the ipsilesional sides of the HC and AC was not. Head impulse velocity may have a differential impact on VOR gain, depending on the degree of deficit. Increasing head velocity in vHIT may be considered to identify subtle deficits on the contralesional side of patients with VN.

Background: Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture (OVCF) substantially reduces a person's health-related quality of life. Computer Tomography (CT) scan is currently the standard for diagnosis of OVCF. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the OVCF detection potential of artificial neural networks (ANN). Methods: Models of artificial intelligence based on deep learning hold promise for quickly and automatically identifying and visualizing OVCF. This study investigated the detection, classification, and grading of OVCF using deep artificial neural networks (ANN). Techniques: Annotation techniques were used to segregate the sagittal images of 1,050 OVCF CT pictures with symptomatic low back pain into 934 CT images for a training dataset (89%) and 116 CT images for a test dataset (11%). A radiologist tagged, cleaned, and annotated the training dataset. Disc deterioration was assessed in all lumbar discs using the AO Spine-DGOU Osteoporotic Fracture Classification System. The detection and grading of OVCF were trained using the deep learning ANN model. By putting an automatic model to the test for dataset grading, the outcomes of the ANN model training were confirmed. Results: The sagittal lumbar CT training dataset included 5,010 OVCF from OF1, 1942 from OF2, 522 from OF3, 336 from OF4, and none from OF5. With overall 96.04% accuracy, the deep ANN model was able to identify and categorize lumbar OVCF. Conclusions: The ANN model offers a rapid and effective way to classify lumbar OVCF by automatically and consistently evaluating routine CT scans using AO Spine-DGOU osteoporotic fracture classification system.

RESUMEN

Background: With the emergence of COVID-19 cases, governments quickly responded with aggressive testing, contact tracing, isolation and quarantine measures. South Korea's testing strategy primarily relied on real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR), focusing on cycle threshold (Ct) values, indicative of viral load, to determine COVID-19 positivity. This study examined the long-term time series distribution of Ct values measured in the same laboratory using a nationally standardized testing type and sampling method in South Korea. It aimed to link Ct values, new COVID-19 cases, and the reproduction number (Rt), setting the stage for using Ct values effectively. Methods: This study analyzed nationally collected 296,347 samples Ct values from February 2020 to January 2022 and examined their associations with the number of new cases and Rt trends. The data were categorized into four COVID-19 periods for in-depth analysis. Statistical methods included time series trend analysis, local regression for smoothing, linear regression for association analysis, and calculation of correlation coefficients. Results: The median Ct values across four COVID-19 periods decreased gradually from 31.71 in the initial period to 21.27 in the fourth period, indicating higher viral load. The comparison of trends between Ct values and the number of new cases revealed that the decline in Ct values preceded the surge in new cases, particularly evident during the initial stages when new cases did not undergo a significant increase. Also, during variant emergence and vaccination rollout, marked shifts in Ct values were observed. Results from linear regression analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between Ct values and new cases (ß = -0.33, p < 0.001, R 2 = 0.67). This implies that as Ct values decrease, new case numbers increase. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the potential of Ct values as early indicators for predicting confirmed COVID-19 cases during the initial stages of the epidemic and suggests their relevance in large-scale epidemic monitoring, even when case numbers are similar.

RESUMEN

Micro-light-emitting diodes (µLEDs) have gained significant interest as an activation source for gas sensors owing to their advantages, including room temperature operation and low power consumption. However, despite these benefits, challenges still exist such as a limited range of detectable gases and slow response. In this study, we present a blue µLED-integrated light-activated gas sensor array based on SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) that exhibit excellent sensitivity, tunable selectivity, and rapid detection with micro-watt level power consumption. The optimal power for µLED is observed at the highest gas response, supported by finite-difference time-domain simulation. Additionally, we first report the visible light-activated selective detection of reducing gases using noble metal-decorated SnO2 NPs. The noble metals induce catalytic interaction with reducing gases, clearly distinguishing NH3, H2, and C2H5OH. Real-time gas monitoring based on a fully hardware-implemented light-activated sensing array was demonstrated, opening up new avenues for advancements in light-activated electronic nose technologies.

Low pulse pressure (PP) in venoarterial-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is a marker of cardiac dysfunction and has been associated with acute brain injury (ABI) as continuous-flow centrifugal pump may lead to endothelial dysregulation. We retrospectively analyzed adults (≥18 years) receiving "peripheral" VA-ECMO for cardiogenic shock in the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization Registry (January 2018-July 2023). Acute brain injury (our primary outcome) included central nervous system (CNS) ischemia, intracranial hemorrhage, brain death, and seizures. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to examine whether PP ≤10 mm Hg was associated with ABI. Of 9,807 peripheral VA-ECMO patients (median age = 57.4 years, 67% = male), 8,294 (85%) had PP >10 mm Hg versus 1,513 (15%) had PP ≤10 mm Hg. Patients with PP ≤10 mm Hg experienced ABI more frequently versus PP >10 mm Hg (15% versus 11%, p < 0.001). After adjustment, PP ≤10 mm Hg was independently associated with ABI (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06-1.48, p = 0.01). Central nervous system ischemia and brain death were more common in patients with PP ≤10 versus PP >10 mm Hg (8% versus 6%, p = 0.008; 3% versus 1%, p < 0.001). Pulse pressure ≤10 mm Hg was associated with CNS ischemia (aOR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.02-1.56, p = 0.03) but not intracranial hemorrhage (aOR = 1.14, 95% CI = 0.85-1.54, p = 0.38). Early low PP (≤10 mm Hg) at 24 hours of ECMO support was associated with ABI, particularly CNS ischemia, in peripheral VA-ECMO patients.

Background: Mass spectrometry (MS) methods exhibit higher accuracy and comparability in measuring serum C-peptide concentrations than immunoassays. We developed and validated a novel isotope dilution-ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem MS (ID-UPLC-MS/MS) assay to measure serum C-peptide concentrations. Methods: Sample pretreatment involved solid-phase extraction, ion-exchange solid-phase extraction, and derivatization with 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidylcarbamate (Cayman Chemical, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA). We used an ExionLC UPLC system (Sciex, Framingham, MA, USA) and a Sciex Triple Quad 6500+ MS/MS system (Sciex) for electrospray ionization in positive-ion mode with multiple charge states of [M+3H]3+ and multiple reaction monitoring transitions. The total run time was 50 mins, and the flow rate was 0.20 mL/min. We evaluated the precision, trueness, linearity, lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ), carryover, and matrix effects. Method comparison with electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) was performed in 138 clinical specimens. Results: The intra- and inter-run precision coefficients of variation were <5% and the bias values for trueness were <4%, which were all acceptable. The verified linear interval was 0.050-15 ng/mL, and the LLOQ was 0.050 ng/mL. No significant carryover or matrix effects were observed. The correlation between this ID-UPLC-MS/MS method and ECLIA was good (R=0.995, slope=1.564); however, the ECLIA showed a positive bias (51.8%). Conclusions: The developed ID-UPLC-MS/MS assay shows acceptable performance in measuring serum C-peptide concentrations. This will be useful in situations requiring accurate measurement of serum C-peptide in clinical laboratories.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate an automated method for combining a digital photograph with a lateral cephalogram. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 985 digital photographs were collected and soft tissue landmarks were manually detected. Then 2500 lateral cephalograms were collected, and corresponding soft tissue landmarks were manually detected. Using the images and landmark identification information, two different artificial intelligence (AI) models-one for detecting soft tissue on photographs and the other for identifying soft tissue on cephalograms-were developed using different deep-learning algorithms. The digital photographs were rotated, scaled, and shifted to minimize the squared sum of distances between the soft tissue landmarks identified by the two different AI models. As a validation process, eight soft tissue landmarks were selected on digital photographs and lateral cephalometric radiographs from 100 additionally collected validation subjects. Paired t-tests were used to compare the accuracy of measures obtained between the automated and manual image integration methods. RESULTS: The validation results showed statistically significant differences between the automated and manual methods on the upper lip and soft tissue B point. Otherwise, no statistically significant difference was found. CONCLUSIONS: Automated photograph-cephalogram image integration using AI models seemed to be as reliable as manual superimposition procedures.
