RESUMEN

Plate-type hollow black TiO2 (HL/BT) with a high NIR reflectance was fabricated for the first time as a LiDAR-detectable black material. A TiO2 layer was formed on commercial-grade glass by using the sol-gel method to obtain a plate-type structure. The glass template was then etched with hydrofluoric acid to form a hollow structure, and blackness was further achieved through NaBH4 reduction, which altered the oxidation state of TiO2 to black TixO2x-1 or Ti4+ to Ti3+ and Ti2+. The blackness of the HL/BT material was maintained by a novel approach that involved etching prior to reduction. The thickness of the TiO2 layer was controlled to maximize the NIR reflectance when applied as paint. The HL/BT material with a thickness of 140 nm (HL/BT140) showed a blackness (L*) of 13.3 and high NIR reflectance of 23.6% at a wavelength of 905 nm. This is attributed to the effective light reflection at the interface created by the TiO2 layer and the hollow structure. Plate-type HL/BT140 provides excellent spreadability, durability, and thermal stability in practical paint applications compared with sphere-type materials due to the higher contacting area to the applied surface, making it suitable for use as a LiDAR-detectable inorganic black pigment in autonomous environments.

Recently, compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) using the amino acid nitrogen stable isotope ratio (δ15NAAs) has been widely used for accurate estimation of trophic position (TP). In addition, a quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) offers insights into diet sources. In this study, we used these techniques to estimate the TP for seabirds that rely on diverse food sources across multiple ecosystems. This allows for the proper combination of factors used in TP calculation which are different for each ecosystem. The approach involved the application of a multi-mixing trophic discrimination factor (TDF) and mixing ß which is a Δδ15N between trophic and source amino acid of primary producer. Since the black-tailed gulls (BTGs) are income-breeding seabirds, which rely on energy sources obtained around their breeding sites, they and their eggs could be useful bioindicators for environmental monitoring. However, the ecological properties of BTGs such as habitats, diets, and TP are not well known due to their large migration range for wintering or breeding and their feeding habits on both aquatic and terrestrial prey. In this study, the eggs were used for estimating TP and for predicting TP of mother birds to overcome difficulties such as capturing birds and collecting non-invasive tissue samples. Eggs, sampled over a decade from three Korean islands, showed spatial differences in diet origin. Considering both the food chain and physiology of BTG, the TP of eggs was estimated to be 3.3-4.0. Notably, the TP was significantly higher at site H (3.8 ± 0.1) than at site B (3.5 ± 0.2), which indicated a higher contribution of marine diet as confirmed by QFASA. Using a reproductive shift of δ15NAAs, the TP of the mother birds was predicted to be 3.6-4.3, positioning them as the top predator in the food web. The advanced integration of multiple approaches provides valuable insights into bird ecology.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have been considered promising and effective photovoltaic absorber due to their superior optoelectronic properties and inherent material merits combining perovskites and QDs. However, they exhibit low moisture stability at room humidity (20-30%) owing to many surface defect sites generated by inefficient ligand exchange process. These surface traps must be re-passivated to improve both charge transport ability and moisture stability. To address this issue, PQD-organic semiconductor hybrid solar cells with suitable electrical properties and functional groups might dramatically improve the charge extraction and defect passivation. Conventional organic semiconductors are typically low-dimensional (1D and 2D) and prone to excessive self-aggregation, which limits chemical interaction with PQDs. In this work, we designed a new 3D star-shaped semiconducting material (Star-TrCN) to enhance the compatibility with PQDs. The robust bonding with Star-TrCN and PQDs is demonstrated by theoretical modeling and experimental validation. The Star-TrCN-PQD hybrid films show improved cubic-phase stability of CsPbI3-PQDs via reduced surface trap states and suppressed moisture penetration. As a result, the resultant devices not only achieve remarkable device stability over 1000 h at 20-30% relative humidity, but also boost power conversion efficiency up to 16.0% via forming a cascade energy band structure.

The freshwater water flea Daphnia magna is a planktonic animal belonging to the Cladocera. To evaluate differences between two D. magna strains (KIT and NIES) in terms of life parameters and fatty acid profiles, we examined several endpoints. In the D. magna KIT strain, the numbers of total and cumulative offspring were lower at 23 °C and higher at 14 °C than in the D. magna NIES strain. However, at 14 °C, the D. magna KIT strain showed an increased lifespan. Although the n-3/n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) ratio was always decreased at a low temperature, the PUFA ratio in the KIT strain had a higher value on day 3 than the NIES strain, which gave it higher adaptability to low temperature. In addition, we identified the elongation of very long chain fatty acids (elovl) and fatty acid desaturase (fad) genes, which are involved in fatty acid biosynthesis pathways, in the genomes of both D. magna KIT and NIES. The Elovl and Fad genes in both D. magna strains were highly conserved, including tandem duplicated Elovl 1/7 genes. This study provides new information about the molecular basis for the difference in temperature sensitivity between two strains of D. magna.

Low-temperature exposure prolongs lifespans and changes lipid metabolism but the relationship between longevity and lipids is largely unknown. Here, we examine the relationship between longevity and lipid metabolism at low temperatures (20 °C and 15 °C) compared with a 25 °C control. Life parameters, fatty acid composition, and transcriptome changes were analyzed in the monogonont rotifer Brachionus koreanus. In vivo life-parameter data indicate that lifespan and fecundity exhibit opposite correlations at low temperatures. The amount of total fatty acids decreased significantly at low temperatures but areas stained with Nile red increased at 15 °C compared with the control. From RNA-seq-based transcriptional analysis, gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway-enrichment analysis were conducted. GO analysis shows that telomeres were positively regulated at low temperatures. KEGG pathway-enrichment results indicate that gene expression involved in lipid metabolism was activated with increased glycerol and/or choline synthesis at low temperatures. We suggest that reduced reproductive rates are associated with a decrease of lecithin, which is involved in the conversion of glycerol to triacylglycerol in response to low temperatures by lowering the temperature of body fluid.

Monolithically integrated hybrid tandem solar cells (TSCs) that combine solution-processed colloidal quantum dot (CQD) and organic molecules are a promising device architecture, able to complement the absorption across the visible to the infrared. However, the performance of organic/CQD hybrid TSCs has not yet surpassed that of single-junction CQD solar cells. Here, a strategic optical structure is devised to overcome the prior performance limit of hybrid TSCs by employing a multibuffer layer and a dual near-infrared (NIR) absorber. In particular, a multibuffer layer is introduced to solve the problem of the CQD solvent penetrating the underlying organic layer. In addition, the matching current of monolithic TSCs is significantly improved to 15.2 mA cm-2 by using a dual NIR organic absorber that complements the absorption of CQD. The hybrid TSCs reach a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.7%, higher than that of the corresponding individual single-junction cells, representing the highest efficiency reported to date for CQD-based hybrid TSCs.

Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) becomes a critical tool in the fields of ecology and biogeochemistry to trace basal carbon sources such as amino acids (AAs) and fatty acids (FAs) in natural environments. However, in many studies, either AAs or FAs have been analyzed due to restricted sample amounts. The aim of this study is to report a single-sample preparation method by identifying AAs using lipid-free residues derived from a typical FA analytic procedure. The capability of the lipid-free residues was evaluated by determining AA quantities and carbon isotopic compositions (δ13C) across diverse sample matrices, including soil, suspended particulate organic matter (SPM), fish tissue, and cultured cyanobacteria (N = 3). Our result showed that the use of lipid-free residues after a typical lipid extraction procedure in most samples did not significantly reduce the AA quantities, relative to the conventional AA method (done by using whole samples), except in case of samples of soil. Moreover, δ13C compositions of the most AAs (from essential to nonessential AAs) in all samples were not significantly different, with an average isotope difference of < 2.1‰ between the two methods. Overall results indicate that the residual parts after extracting lipid fraction are useful for reliable AA quantification and individual isotopic information. Ultimately, one sample preparation for determining FA and AA data enables us to characterize one (or multiple) basal carbon source(s) within rare samples despite their limited abundance. To determine distributions, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of freshwater cyanobacterial toxins such as microcystins (MCs), surface water, suspended solids, sediments, and coastal organisms were collected from seven stations in inner and outer regions of the estuary dam in the Geum River Estuary in June and July 2017. Concentrations of MC variants (MC-LR, -RR, and -YR) in the multimedia samples were analyzed using a HPLC-MS/MS. Trophic position (TP) of organisms (fish, bivalve, gastropod, decapod, and polychaete) was determined by nitrogen stable isotope analyses of both bulk tissues and amino acids. From July to August 2017, great concentrations of MCs were detected in discharged freshwater ranging from 0.4 to 75 µg L-1. Considerable amounts of MCs are delivered to the Geum River Estuary in summer season. MCs spread far away as dissolved phases (18.7-49.5 ng L-1) in July when large amount of freshwater was discharged during the rainy season. Concentrations of MCs in marine organisms varied among species, ranging from 40 to 870 ng g-1 dw. Bioaccumulated MCs tend to decrease with increasing TP of organisms, suggesting that MCs are biodiluted through the marine food web. Compound-specific isotope analysis (nitrogen of amino acids) provides more reliable TPs compared with those by bulk isotope analysis in a closed estuary (such as the Geum River Estuary) with large fluctuations in the isotope ratio of primary producers.

To examine how tributyltin (TBT), a model obesogen, affects the lipid metabolism in the marine rotifer Brachionus koreanus, we carried out life-cycle studies and determined the in vitro and in silico interactions of retinoid X receptor (RXR) with TBT, the transcriptional levels of RXR and lipid metabolic genes, and the fatty acid content. The lethal concentration 10% (LC10) was determined to be 5.12 µg/L TBT, and negative effects on ecologically relevant end points (e.g., decreased lifespan and fecundity) were detected at 5 µg/L TBT. On the basis of these findings, subsequent experiments were conducted below 1 µg/L TBT, which did not show any negative effects on ecologically relevant end points in B. koreanus. Nile red staining analysis showed that after exposure to 1 µg/L TBT, B. koreanus stored neutral lipids and had significantly increased transcriptional levels of RXR and lipid metabolism-related genes compared to the control. However, the content of total fatty acids did not significantly change at any exposure level. In the single fatty acids profile, a significant increase in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) 14:0 and 20:0 was observed, but the contents of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids were significantly decreased. Also, a transactivation assay of TBT with RXR showed that TBT is an agonist of Bk-RXR with a similar fold-induction to the positive control. Taken together, these results demonstrate that TBT-modulated RXR signaling leads to increase in transcriptional levels of lipid metabolism-related genes and the synthesis of SFAs but decreases the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Our findings support a wider taxonomic scope of lipid perturbation due to xenobiotic exposure that occurs via NRs in aquatic animals.

To understand the lipid metabolism in invertebrate species, identification of the fatty acid (FA) synthesis gene families in invertebrate species is important, since some FA are unable to be synthesized in the organisms by themselves. In the study, to identify the elongation of very long chain fatty acid (Elovl) genes in the marine rotifer Brachionus koreanus, the genome-wide identification and phylogenetic analysis of Elovl genes have been conducted with the expression profile of Elovl genes on the alga Tetraslemis suecica-fed B. koreanus. A total 10 Elovl genes have been identified from the genome of B. koreanus, with conserved HXXHH motif. Synteny analysis showed that tandem duplication event has occurred (Elovl3/6a and b, Elovl9a and b, and Elovl9c and d) in the ancestor. Phylogenetic analysis have clearly revealed that Brachionus spp. has only 2/5 and 3/6 subfamilies, and two novel Elovl classes have been revealed, namely Elovl9 and 10. Transcriptional data showed that the 10 Elovl genes were differently expressed and their expression could be regulated by feeding the alga T. suecica. From fatty acid (FA) profile data of the alga Tetraslemis suecica-fed B. koreanus, we revealed that the marine rotifer B. koreanus may synthesize very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA; >22 carbons) by themselves, as VLCFA was hardly detected in the alga T. suecica. The study provides a better understanding of FA metabolism of the marine rotifer B. koreanus after feeding the T. suecica.
