Objectives: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent mental health condition, and techniques using sensory stimulation in processing traumatic memories have gained attention. The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a psychotherapy that combines tapping on acupoints with exposure to cognitive reframing. This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of EFT as a treatment for PTSD by answering the following research questions 1) What is the compliance and completion rate of patients with PTSD with regard to EFT protocol? Is the dropout rate reasonable? 2) Is the effect size of EFT protocol for PTSD sufficient to justify a future trial? Methods: Thirty participants diagnosed with PTSD were recruited. They received weekly EFT sessions for five weeks, in which they repeated a statement acknowledging the problem and accepting themselves while tapping the SI3 acupoint on the side of their hand. PTSD symptoms were evaluated using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) before and after the intervention. Results: Of the 30 PTSD patients (mean age 34.1 ± 9.1, 80% female), 96.7% showed over 80% compliance to the EFT sessions, and 86.7% completed the entire study process. The mean PCL-5 total score decreased significantly after the intervention, with a large effect size (change from baseline -14.33 [95% CI -19.79, -8.86], p < 0.0001, d = 1.06). Conclusion: The study suggests that EFT is a feasible treatment for PTSD, with high session compliance and low dropout rates. The effect size observed in this study supports the need for a larger trial in the future to further investigate EFT as a treatment for PTSD. However, the lack of a control group and the use of a self-rated questionnaire for PTSD symptoms are limitations of this study. The findings of this pilot study can be used to plan a future trial.

Fe-based nanostructures have possessed promising properties that make it suitable for chiral sensing and imaging applications owing to their ultra-small size, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, excellent photostability, tunable fluorescence, and water solubility. This review summarizes the recent research progress in the field of Fe-based nanostructures and places special emphases on their applications in chiral sensing and imaging. The synthetic strategies to prepare the targeted Fe-based structures were also introduced. The chiral sensing and imaging applications of the nanostructures are discussed in details.

Upper airway cough syndrome (UACS) is a common cause of chronic cough characterized by upper airway symptoms, including nasal discharge and throat discomfort. Empirical treatments for UASC-induced chronic cough, such as first-generation antihistamines, have been used; however, the long-term use of these medicines has adverse effects. Therefore, we evaluate the efficacy, safety, and economic feasibility of Wolbigachul-tang (WBGCT), an herbal medication for UASC-induced chronic cough. This is a randomized, double-blind, active-comparator-controlled, parallel, and exploratory clinical trial. Thirty patients with UASC-induced chronic cough will be recruited and randomly allocated to the WBGCT and control groups in a 1:1 allocation ratio. The investigational medicine will be administered three times per day for 2 weeks (3 g of WBGCT at a time). The primary outcome measure is the cough symptom score measured at screening, before starting the trial, and after 2 and 4 weeks. Secondary outcome measures include the cough visual analog scale, nasal discharge score, questionnaire of clinical symptoms of cough and sputum, Leicester cough questionnaire-Korean version, integrative medicine outcome scale, integrative medicine patient satisfaction scale, and 5-level EuroQol 5-dimensional questionnaire, which will be assessed before starting the trial and after 2 and 4 weeks. This study aims to investigate the efficacy, safety, and economic feasibility of WBGCT in the treatment of chronic cough. Therefore, the results of this trial provide evidence for the application of WBGCT in the treatment of UACS-induced chronic cough.

Karenia mikimotoi is a common species of red tide dinoflagellate that causes the mass mortality of marine fauna in coastal waters of Republic of Korea. Despite continuous studies on the ecophysiology and toxicity of K. mikimotoi, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Red sea bream, Pagrus major, is a high-value aquaculture fish species, and the coastal aquaculture industry of red sea bream has been increasingly affected by red tides. To investigate the potential oxidative effects of K. mikimotoi on P. major and the molecular mechanisms involved, we exposed the fish to varying concentrations of K. mikimotoi and evaluated its toxicity. Our results showed that exposure to K. mikimotoi led to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative DNA damage in the gill tissue of P. major. Furthermore, we found that K. mikimotoi induced the activation of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase, in the gill tissue of P. major, with a significant increase in activity at concentrations above 5000 cells/mL. However, the activity of glutathione S-transferase did not significantly increase at the equivalent concentration. Our study confirms that oxidative stress and DNA damage is induced by acute exposure to K. mikimotoi, as it produces ROS and hypoxic conditions in P. major. In addition, it was confirmed that gill and blood samples can be used as biomarkers to detect the degree of oxidative stress in fish. These findings have important implications for the aquaculture of red sea bream, particularly in the face of red tide disasters.

Background: Heterocyclic analogs of curcumin have a wide range of therapeutic potential and the ability to control the activity of a variety of metabolic enzymes. Methods: 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques were used to determine the structures of synthesized compounds. The agar disc diffusion method and α-amylase inhibition assay were used to examine the antibacterial and anti-diabetic potential of the compounds against α-amylase enzyme inhibitory activity, respectively. DPPH-free radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays were used to assess the in vitro antioxidant potential. Results and Discussion: In this work, nine heterocyclic analogs derived from curcumin precursors under ultrasonic irradiation were synthesized in excellent yields (81.4-93.7%) with improved reaction time. Results of antibacterial activities revealed that compounds 8, and 11 displayed mean inhibition zone of 13.00±0.57, and 19.66±00 mm, respectively, compared to amoxicillin (12.87±1.41 mm) at 500 µg/mL against E. coli, while compounds 8, 11 and 16 displayed mean inhibition zone of 17.67±0.57, 14.33±0.57 and 23.33±00 mm, respectively, compared to amoxicillin (13.75±1.83 mm) at 500 µg/mL against P. aeruginosa. Compound 11 displayed a mean inhibition zone of 11.33±0.57 mm compared to amoxicillin (10.75±1.83 mm) at 500 µg/mL against S. aureus. Compound 11 displayed higher binding affinities of -7.5 and -8.3 Kcal/mol with penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and ß-lactamases producing bacterial strains, compared to amoxicillin (-7.2 and -7.9 Kcal/mol, respectively), these results are in good agreement with the in vitro antibacterial activities. In vitro antidiabetic potential on α-amylase enzyme revealed that compounds 11 (IC50=7.59 µg/mL) and 16 (IC50=4.08 µg/mL) have higher inhibitory activities than acarbose (IC50=8.0 µg/mL). Compound 8 showed promising antioxidant inhibition efficacy of DPPH (IC50 = 2.44 g/mL) compared to ascorbic acid (IC50=1.24 g/mL), while compound 16 revealed 89.9±20.42% inhibition of peroxide generation showing its potential in reducing the development of lipid peroxides. In silico molecular docking analysis, results are in good agreement with in vitro biological activity. In silico ADMET profiles suggested the adequate oral drug-likeness potential of the compounds without adverse effects. Conclusion: According to our findings, both biological activities and in silico computational studies results demonstrated that compounds 8, 11, and 16 are promising α-amylase inhibitors and antibacterial agents against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus, whereas compound 8 was found to be a promising antioxidant agent.

INTRODUCTION: The emotional freedom technique (EFT) is an acupuncture-based psychotherapy that combines tapping on acupoints with cognitive reframing. EFT has been previously shown to have potential for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, further clinical evidence and underlying mechanisms of EFT are yet to be fully explored. This proposed clinical trial aims to examine the effect of EFT on patients with PTSD compared with the waitlist (WL) and active controls. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study was designed as a randomised, assessor-blinded, three-arm clinical MRI study. A total of 120 eligible patients with PTSD will be recruited and randomised into EFT, written exposure therapy (WET) or WL groups. EFT and WET will be applied once a week for 5 weeks. For patients in the WL group, EFT will be performed after 12 weeks. PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms and quality of life will be evaluated. Assessments will be conducted at baseline (week 0), post-treatment (week 6) and follow-up (week 12). Structural and functional brain images and recording videos of facial expressions to emotional stimuli will be obtained before and after treatment. Sixty participants without lifetime traumatic experiences will be enrolled as healthy controls. The primary objective of the study is to compare the change from baseline in the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale after treatment (week 6) between EFT and WL groups and between EFT and WET groups. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of the Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital. The research findings will be shared at national and international conferences and will be published in peer-reviewed journals. Introduction: As South Korea is fast becoming an aging society, the need for integrated care of the elderly has increased. 'Community Integrated Care Initiatives' have been implemented by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. However, home healthcare is insufficient to meet this need. Description: The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) launched the initiative, 'Patient-Centered Integrated model of Home Health Care Services in South Korea (PICS-K)'. Its purpose is to coordinate home healthcare providers by establishing a home health care support center (HHSC) in public hospitals starting in 2021. The PICS-K has six main features: integration of primary care-hospital-personal care-social services through a consortium, HHSC in hospitals with primary care collaboration, increased accessibility, interdisciplinary team (IDT), patient-centeredness, and education. Discussion: Integrating healthcare, personal care, and social services at multiple levels is necessary. Accordingly, platforms to share participant information and service records, and institutional payment system reforms are required. Conclusion: In public hospitals, the HHSC supported primary care, which provides home healthcare. The model combined community healthcare and social services to accomplish the aging-in-place of the homebound population by focusing on their needs. This model will be applicable to other regions in Korea.

It is assumed that mood can be inferred from one's facial expression. While this association may prove to be an objective marker for mood disorders, few studies have explicitly evaluated this linkage. The facial movement responses of women with major depressive disorder (n = 66) and healthy controls (n = 46) under emotional stimuli were recorded using webcam. To boost facial movements, the naturalistic audio-visual stimuli were presented. To assess consistent global patterns across facial movements, scores for facial action units were extracted and projected onto principal component using principal component analysis. The associations of component for facial movements with functional brain circuitry was also investigated. Clusters of mouth movements, such as lip press and stretch, identified by principal component analysis, were attenuated in depressive patients compared to those in healthy controls. This component of facial movements was associated with depressive symptoms, and the strengths of resting brain functional connectivity between nucleus accumbens and both posterior insular cortex and thalamus. The evaluation of facial movements may prove to be a promising quantitative marker for assessing depressive symptoms and their underlying brain circuitry.

BACKGROUND: The Western Pacific Region has one of the fastest-growing populations of older adults (≥ 65 years) globally, among whom tuberculosis (TB) poses a particular concern. This study reports country case studies from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore reflecting on their experiences in managing TB among older adults. FINDINGS: Across all four countries, TB case notification and incidence rates were highest among older adults, but clinical and public health guidance focused on this population was limited. Individual country reports illustrated a range of practices and challenges. Passive case finding remains the norm, with limited active case finding (ACF) programs implemented in China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Different approaches have been trialled to assist older adults in securing an early diagnosis, as well as adhering to their TB treatment. All countries emphasised the need for person-centred approaches that include the creative application of new technology and tailored incentive programs, as well as reconceptualisation of how we provide treatment support. The use of traditional medicines was found to be culturally entrenched among older adults, with a need for careful consideration of their complementary use. TB infection testing and the provision of TB preventive treatment (TPT) were underutilised with highly variable practice. CONCLUSION: Older adults require specific consideration in TB response policies, given the burgeoning aging population and their high TB risk. Policymakers, TB programs and funders must invest in and develop locally contextualised practice guidelines to inform evidence-based TB prevention and care practices for older adults.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between distress at initial diagnosis and disease-free survival in patients with resectable colon cancer. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Considerable research has examined the psychological impact of having a confirmed diagnosis of cancer, but relatively limited research has examined the impact of distress during the diagnostic phase on oncological outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. We included newly diagnosed colon cancer patients who had resectable surgery and underwent distress screening between July 2014 and July 2021 (N=1,362). The Korean versions of the Distress Thermometer were used to assess distress and related problems. Patients were categorized into 3 groups based on distress score: low (<4), moderate (4-7), and severe (≥8). The primary outcome was disease-free survival. RESULTS: The mean distress was 5.1 (SD=2.4) and 61%, and 15% of patients had moderate and severe distress at diagnosis, respectively. The severe distress group was more likely to report fear, sadness, and concerns regarding insurance/finance, work, and childcare than the low distress group. Compared with the low distress group, the severe distress group had worse disease-free survival (Hazard Ratio=1.84, 95% CI=1.03, 3.29). The association was more evident in patients with stage IV disease (Hazard Ratio=2.53, 95% CI=1.02, 6.25). CONCLUSIONS: A substantial number of patients with colon cancer experience distress at diagnosis, and severe distress has a negative impact on oncologic outcomes. Active monitoring and appropriate management of distress at diagnosis should be adopted at clinical settings.

The present protocol describes the creation of four-dimensional (4D), time-dependent, shape-changeable, stimuli-responsive soft robots using a three-dimensional (3D) bio-printing method. Recently, 4D printing techniques have been extensively proposed as innovative new methods for developing shape-transformable soft robots. In particular, 4D time-dependent shape transformation is an essential factor in soft robotics because it allows effective functions to occur at the right time and place when triggered by external cues, such as heat, pH, and light. In line with this perspective, stimuli-responsive materials, including hydrogels, polymers, and hybrids, can be printed to realize smart shape-transformable soft robotic systems. The current protocol can be used to fabricate thermally responsive soft grippers composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)-based hydrogels, with overall sizes ranging from millimeters to centimeters in length. It is expected that this study will provide new directions for realizing intelligent soft robotic systems for various applications in smart manipulators (e.g., grippers, actuators, and pick-and-place machines), healthcare systems (e.g., drug capsules, biopsy tools, and microsurgeries), and electronics (e.g., wearable sensors and fluidics).

Two-dimensional (2D) iron oxide-hydroxide (FeOOH) nanomaterials as low-cost and environmental-friendly composites are promising materials for application in heavy metal elimination. However, developing 2D FeOOH adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and excellent durability toward Cr (VI) removal is still a challenge due to the intrinsically non-layered structure. Here, a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized 2D single-layer nano-raft-like α-FeOOH (α-FeOOH NF) consisted of parallel-aligned ultrathin nanowires was obtained via a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach. It was found that the 2D α-FeOOH NF nanostructure was formed by an in-plane iterative self-assembly mechanism, where α-FeOOH nanoparticles acted as intermediates and iterative seeds with anisotropic growth. The as-prepared 2D α-FeOOH NF possessed porous structure and high surface area, which provided a strong ability to capture the Cr (VI) ions in water. Benefiting from the unique structure and PEI modification, it exhibited fast adsorption kinetic rate, high reusability, and high adsorption capacity toward Cr(VI) removal. The removal mechanism involved adsorption and reduction process. Besides, the molecular dynamic simulations disclosed a facet-dependent Cr(VI) adsorption behavior of α-FeOOH. The maximum adsorption capacity was 67.1 mg/g and the removal efficiency still maintained 83.9 % in the fifth cycle. This work demonstrated that 2D α-FeOOH NF could be a promising adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal.

Background: This study proposes that being small for gestational age (SGA) is not only an important indicator for neonatal health but also could be a consequence of gender inequality. Low birth weight (LBW) has been widely used as a measurement for adverse birth outcomes, whereas much less attention has been given to the use of small for gestational age (SGA). Despite the importance and worldwide acknowledgement of promoting gender equality and women's empowerment to improve maternal and infant health, previous studies on SGA have focused on nutritional status, social and medical infrastructures, and socioeconomic status. The impact of structural violence against women on SGA has not been explored sufficiently. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of gender inequality on SGA, using the Gender Inequality Index (GII). Methods: A total of 106 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) from the most recent three global datasets-Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and World Bank-were assessed. Results: Findings from generalized linear model analysis suggest that significant links exist between years of potential life lost (YLL) from SGA and gender inequality, maternal health status, and country level of income. Conclusions: Our findings advance the understanding of the role of gender inequality on SGA and reiterate the importance of considering structural violence in maternal and infant health research. These associations can support the message of designing public health and socioeconomic development as well as creating campaigns to promote gender equality in efforts to advance maternal and infant health and to prevent adverse birth outcomes across the globe. This study was conducted using data from the Korea Medical Panel Survey (KMPS) carried out in 2015. Importantly, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Korean medicine (KM) and Western medicine (WM) in medical service use. The general characteristics and the frequency of utilization of medical services were analyzed for 18,130 participants. Chi-square analysis was used to examine the factors that affected medical service use. Additionally, logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the odds ratio (OR) between the KM Use with WM Use and KM&WM Use with disease group. The proportion of respondents who used KM&WM was the highest among those over 65 years of age and it was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.001). The OR for using KM and WM was 3.236 and it was also statistically significant (p < 0.001). Further, the ORs of KM&WM Use for all seven disease groups were greater than 1 and were statistically significant (p < 0.001) except for respiratory disease. The significant ORs of KM&WM Use were 10.342 (musculoskeletal), 2.073 (exogenous causes), 1.988 (nervous), 1.677 (digestive), 1.541 (circulatory) and 1.386 (skin). The findings in this study were attributed to a combination of social aspects such as the increasing incidence of chronic diseases among the elderly population, policy aspects such as the collaborative pilot project to promote collaborative treatment (CT), economic aspects, such as a lower total cost for CT and scientific aspects such as evidence supporting the efficacy of CT.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the association between maximum daily temperature and work-related injuries according to employment status in South Korea. METHODS: Data on workers' compensation claims and daily maximum temperature between May 20 and September 10, 2017-2018, were collected and analyzed. The absolute temperature risk effect (ATR) was evaluated by comparing the risk effect at 2 temperatures (30°C vs 33°C) across all communities using 2-stage time-series analysis. RESULTS: The association between high temperatures and work-related injuries was statistically significant in the construction sector (ATR, 1.129; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.010-1.261). In addition, the findings of this study also demonstrated a higher risk effect among nonpermanent workers (ATR, 1.109; 95% CI, 1.013-1.214) at 33°C versus 30°C when compared with permanent workers (ATR, 0.963; 95% CI, 0.891-1.041). CONCLUSIONS: This study found a significant association between high temperatures and work-related injuries among nonpermanent workers in South Korea.

The Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) measures static and dynamic seated trunk control in children with cerebral palsy (CP) who have postural control problems. Studies have investigated the reliability and validity of the TIS. However, the fitness and difficulty of the scale items have not been investigated. This study used Rasch analysis to test the construct validity of TIS for children with CP. TIS data were collected from 60 children with CP and analyzed for person and item fit, item difficulty, rating scale suitability, and separation reliability. Principal component analyses of residuals revealed that TIS had unidimensionality. Five misfit items (static sitting balance (SSB) items 2 and 3, dynamic sitting balance (DSB) items 4 and 5, and coordination (COO) item 3) were identified. DSB8 is the most difficult item, followed by DSB3 and COO4. On the other hand, the SSB3 item was found to be a relatively easy item. The rating scales demonstrated that out of the three subscales, SSB, DSB, and COO, only the SSB subscale did not meet the appropriate criteria. We demonstrated that statistical item analysis with the Rasch model could provide valuable information related to psychometric properties.

Sensory processing may be associated with adolescents' preferences for different leisure activities. However, knowledge about how different sensory processing patterns may relate to adolescents' participation in leisure activities is scarce. This study sought to investigate the relationship between sensory processing and leisure participation in early adolescents. Study participants were typical early adolescents aged from 11 to 12 years (mean = 11.88 ± 0.33, n = 140). The Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (AASP) and Children's Assessment for Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) were used to determine the participants' sensory processing abilities. Correlational and multiple regression methods were employed to analyze the relationship between sensory processing and leisure participation. There were significant positive relationships between sensory seeking and participation (r = 0.177-0.350, p = 0.000-0.037). There were also significant negative relationships between low registration, sensory sensitivity, and overall participation (r = -0.202, p = 0.017, r = -0.212, p = 0.012). We found that formal activities, skill-based activities, and self-improvement activities were the main distinguishing factors between sensory processing types. Results suggest that sensation seeking and sensory sensitivity from the AASP were predictive of leisure participation. This study provides evidence to inform practices regarding the association of sensory processing and leisure participation and supports the need for assessing sensory processing in early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about endogenous inhibitors of angiogenic growth factors. In this study, we identified a novel endogenous anti-angiogenic factor expressed in pericytes and clarified its underlying mechanism and clinical significance. METHODS: Herein, we found Kai1 knockout mice showed significantly enhanced angiogenesis. Then, we investigated the anti-angiogenic roll of Kai1 in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: KAI1 was mainly expressed in pericytes rather than in endothelial cells. It localized at the membrane surface after palmitoylation by zDHHC4 enzyme and induced LIF through the Src/p53 pathway. LIF released from pericytes in turn suppressed angiogenic factors in endothelial cells as well as in pericytes themselves, leading to inhibition of angiogenesis. Interestingly, KAI1 had another mechanism to inhibit angiogenesis: It directly bound to VEGF and PDGF and inhibited activation of their receptors. In the two different in vivo cancer models, KAI1 supplementation significantly inhibited tumor angiogenesis and growth. A peptide derived from the large extracellular loop of KAI1 has been shown to have anti-angiogenic effects to block the progression of breast cancer and retinal neovascularization in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: KAI1 from PC is a novel molecular regulator that counterbalances the effect of angiogenic factors.

RESUMEN

The mitogenome of Myuroclada maximowiczii (GenBank accession number MT834960) has a total length of 104,216 bp and encodes 40 protein-coding genes, three ribosomal RNAs, and 24 transfer RNAs. The overall nucleotide composition is asymmetric (29.6% A, 29.4% T, 21.2% G, and 19.8% C), with AT content (59.0%) higher than GC content (41.0%). The gene arrangement of this mitogenome is identical to that in other bryophytes. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using complete mitochondrial genome sequences of 24 bryophytes publicly available in GenBank and the mitogenome sequence derived in this study. Our phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. maximowiczii clustered in a clade with other hypnalean taxas.
