RESUMEN

Herein, we present, for the first time, a chemoresistive-type gas sensor composed of two-dimensional WSe2, fabricated by a simple selenization of tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanowires at atmospheric pressure. The morphological, structural, and chemical composition investigation shows the growth of vertically oriented three-dimensional (3D) assemblies of edge-enriched WSe2 nanoplatelets arrayed in a nanoflower shape. The gas sensing properties of flowered nanoplatelets (2H-WSe2) are investigated thoroughly toward specific gases (NH3 and NO2) at different operating temperatures. The integration of 3D WSe2 with unique structural arrangements resulted in exceptional gas sensing characteristics with dual selectivity toward NH3 and NO2 gases. Selectivity can be tuned by selecting its operating temperature (150 °C for NH3 and 100 °C for NO2). For instance, the sensor has shown stable and reproducible responses (24.5%) toward 40 ppm NH3 vapor detection with an experimental LoD < 2 ppm at moderate temperatures. The gas detecting capabilities for CO, H2, C6H6, and NO2 were also investigated to better comprehend the selectivity of the nanoflower sensor. Sensors showed repeatable responses with high sensitivity to NO2 molecules at a substantially lower operating temperature (100 °C) (even at room temperature) and LoD < 0.1 ppm. However, the gas sensing properties reveal high selectivity toward NH3 gas at moderate operating temperatures. Moreover, the sensor demonstrated high resilience against ambient humidity (Rh = 50%), demonstrating its remarkable stability toward NH3 gas detection. Considering the detection of NO2 in a humid ambient atmosphere, there was a modest increase in the sensor response (5.5%). Furthermore, four-month long-term stability assessments were also taken toward NH3 gas detection, and sensors showed excellent response stability. Therefore, this study highlights the practical application of the 2H variant of WSe2 nanoflower gas sensors for NH3 vapor detection.

RESUMEN

Laminated metal dichalcogenides are candidates for different potential applications ranging from catalysis to nanoelectronics. However, efforts are still needed to optimize synthesis methods aiming to control the number of layers, morphology, and crystallinity, parameters that govern the properties of the synthesized materials. Another important parameter is the thickness and the length of the samples with the possibility of large-scale growth of target homogeneous materials. Here, we report a chemical vapor deposition method at atmospheric pressure to produce vertically aligned tin dichalcogenide based-materials. Tin disulfide (SnS2) and tin diselenide (SnSe2) vertically aligned nanosheets have been synthesized and characterized by different methods showing their crystallinity and purity. Homogenous crystalline 2H-phase SnS2 nanosheets with high purity were synthesized with vertical orientation on substrates; sulfur vacancies were observed at the edges of the sheets. Similarly, in the crystalline 2H phase SnSe2 nanosheets selenium vacancies were observed at the edges. Moreover, these nanosheets are larger than the SnS2 nanosheets, show lower nanosheet homogeneity on substrates and contamination with selenium atoms from the synthesis was observed. The synthesized nanomaterials are interesting in various applications where the edge accessibility and/or directionality of the nanosheets play a major role as for example in gas sensing or field emission.

RESUMEN

Zinc Oxide nanoparticles have been synthesized by two simple routes using Aloe vera (green synthesis, route I) or Cassava starch (gelatinization, route II). The XRD patterns and Raman spectra show that both synthesis routes lead to single-phase ZnO. XPS results indicate the presence of zinc atoms with oxidation state Zn2+. SEM images of the ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using Cassava starch show the presence of pseudo-spherical nanoparticles and nanosheets, while just pseudo-spherical nanoparticles were observed when Aloe vera was used. The UV-Vis spectra showed a slight difference in the absorption edge of the ZnO particles obtained using Aloe vera (3.18 eV) and Cassava starch (3.24 eV). The ZnO nanoparticles were tested as adsorbents for the removal of copper in wastewater, it is shown that at low Cu2+ ion concentration (~40 mg/L) the nanoparticles synthesized by both routes have the same removal efficiency, however, increasing the absorbate concentration (> 80 mg/L) the ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using Aloe vera have a higher removal efficiency. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles can be used as effective and environmental-friendly metal trace absorbers in wastewater.

RESUMEN

ZnO is known to be photocatalytic, but with limited performances due to the strong electron-hole recombination after irradiation. The integration of ZnO nanomaterials on a conductive and high surface area carbon substrate is thus a potential alternative to obtain a significant improvement of the photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the carbon functionalization is expected to have a significant role in the adsorption/degradation mechanisms of dye, due to the difference in wettability or surface charge. In this view, ZnO photocatalytic nanoparticles have been deposited on high surface area carbon xerogel substrate (CXG), using a new and original plasma process, consisting in the degradation of a solid organometallic directly on the carbon substrate (no gaseous precursor). In addition to the ZnO nanoparticle formation, the plasma treatment allows the carbon functionalization. The ZnO/CXG composite has been tested for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous media and compared with and O2 or NH3 plasma-treated xerogels (without nanoparticles) to identify the significant role of the substrate and its modification in the RhB adsorption and degradation mechanism. The high photocatalytic activity of ZnO/CXG composite is attributed to (i) the formation of small (8-10 nm) and well-crystallized ZnO nanoparticles anchored to the carbon substrate and (ii) to the modification of the xerogel surface chemistry. Indeed, O2 plasma treatment of the CXG promotes the generation of hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl surface functional groups, which are polar and acidic, while the NH3 plasma treatment mainly leads to the formation of polar and basic amino groups. While both plasma treatments promote the formation of polar functional groups, which enhance the CXG wettability, the formation of acidic groups is identified as beneficial for the adsorption of the RhB dye, while basic groups are detrimental.

RESUMEN

Silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays were coated with chromium nitride (CrN) for use as supercapacitor electrodes. The CrN layer of different thicknesses was deposited onto SiNWs using bipolar magnetron sputtering method. The areal capacitance of the SiNWs-CrN, as measured in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte, was as high as 180 mF cm-2 at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1 (equivalent to 31.8 mF cm-2 at 1.6 mA cm-2) with an excellent electrochemical retention of 92% over 15 000 cycles. This work paves the way toward using CrN modified 3D SiNWs arrays for micro-supercapacitor application.

RESUMEN

The growth of single-layer graphene (SLG) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper surfaces is very popular because of the self-limiting effect that, in principle, prevents the growth of few-layer graphene (FLG). However, the reproducibility of the CVD growth of homogeneous SLG remains a major challenge, especially if one wants to avoid heavy surface treatments, monocrystalline substrates and expensive equipment to control the atmosphere inside the growth system. We demonstrate here that backside tungsten coating of copper foils allows for the exclusive growth of SLG with full coverage by atmospheric pressure CVD implemented in a vacuum-free furnace. We show that the absence of FLG patches is related to the suppression of carbon diffusion through copper. In the perspective of large-scale production of graphene, this approach constitutes a significant improvement to the traditional CVD growth process since (1) a tight control of the hydrocarbon flow is no longer required to avoid FLG formation and, consequently, (2) the growth duration necessary to reach full coverage can be drastically shortened.

RESUMEN

Densely populated edge-terminated vertically aligned two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) with thicknesses ranging from 5 to 20 nm were directly synthesized on Mo films deposited on SiO2 by sulfurization. The quality of the obtained NSs was analyzed by scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy, and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The as-grown NSs were then successfully transferred to the substrates using a wet chemical etching method. The transferred NSs sample showed excellent field-emission properties. A low turn-on field of 3.1 V/µm at a current density of 10 µA/cm2 was measured. The low turn-on field is attributed to the morphology of the NSs exhibiting vertically aligned sheets of MoS2 with sharp and exposed edges. Our findings show that the fabricated MoS2 NSs could have a great potential as robust high-performance electron-emitter material for various applications such as microelectronics and nanoelectronics, flat-panel displays and electron-microscopy emitter tips.

RESUMEN

The surface chemistry of plasma fluorinated vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (vCNT) is correlated to the CF4 plasma chemical composition. The results obtained via FTIR and mass spectrometry are combined with the XPS and Raman analysis of the sample surface showing the dependence on different plasma parameters (power, time and distance from the plasma region) on the resulting fluorination. Photoemission and absorption spectroscopies are used to investigate the evolution of the electronic properties as a function of the fluorine content at the vCNT surface. The samples suffer a limited ageing effect, with a small loss of fluorine functionalities after two weeks in ambient conditions.

RESUMEN

We investigated the interaction between size-selected Au2 and Au3 clusters and graphene. Hereto preformed clusters are deposited on graphene field-effect transistors, a novel approach which offers a high control over the number of atoms per cluster, the deposition energy and the deposited density. The induced p-doping and charge carrier scattering indicate that a major part of the deposited clusters remains on the graphene flake as either individual or sub-nm coalesced entities. This is independently confirmed by scanning electron microscopy on the same devices after current annealing. Our novel approach provides perspectives for the electronic sensing of metallic clusters down to their atom-by-atom size-specific properties, and exploiting the tunability of clusters for tailoring desired properties in graphene.

RESUMEN

We propose an innovative, easy-to-implement approach to synthesize aligned large-area single-crystalline graphene flakes by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil. This method doubly takes advantage of residual oxygen present in the gas phase. First, by slightly oxidizing the copper surface, we induce grain boundary pinning in copper and, in consequence, the freezing of the thermal recrystallization process. Subsequent reduction of copper under hydrogen suddenly unlocks the delayed reconstruction, favoring the growth of centimeter-sized copper (111) grains through the mechanism of abnormal grain growth. Second, the oxidation of the copper surface also drastically reduces the nucleation density of graphene. This oxidation/reduction sequence leads to the synthesis of aligned millimeter-sized monolayer graphene domains in epitaxial registry with copper (111). The as-grown graphene flakes are demonstrated to be both single-crystalline and of high quality.

RESUMEN

The structural colour of male Hoplia coerulea beetles is notable for changing from blue to green upon contact with water. In fact, reversible changes in both colour and fluorescence are induced in this beetle by various liquids, although the mechanism has never been fully explained. Changes enacted by water are much faster than those by ethanol, in spite of ethanol's more rapid spread across the elytral surface. Moreover, the beetle's photonic structure is enclosed by a thin scale envelope preventing direct contact with the liquid. Here, we note the presence of sodium, potassium and calcium salts in the scale material that mediate the penetration of liquid through putative micropores. The result leads to the novel concept of a "photonic cell": namely, a biocompatible photonic structure that is encased by a permeable envelope which mediates liquid-induced colour changes in that photonic structure. Engineered photonic cells dispersed in culture media could revolutionize the monitoring of cell-metabolism.

RESUMEN

Nonlinear second harmonic optical activity of graphene covering a gold photon sieve was determined for different polarizations. The photon sieve consists of a subwavelength gold nanohole array placed on glass. It combines the benefits of efficient light trapping and surface plasmon propagation to unravel different elements of graphene second-order susceptibility χ((2)). Those elements efficiently contribute to second harmonic generation. In fact, the graphene-coated photon sieve produces a second harmonic intensity at least two orders of magnitude higher compared with a bare, flat gold layer and an order of magnitude coming from the plasmonic effect of the photon sieve; the remaining enhancement arises from the graphene layer itself. The measured second harmonic generation yield, supplemented by semianalytical computations, provides an original method to constrain the graphene χ((2)) elements. The values obtained are |d31 + d33| ≤ 8.1 × 10(3) pm(2)/V and |d15| ≤ 1.4 × 10(6) pm(2)/V for a second harmonic signal at 780 nm. This original method can be applied to any kind of 2D materials covering such a plasmonic structure.

RESUMEN

Based on micro-Raman spectroscopy (µRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we study the structural damage incurred in monolayer (1L) and few-layer (FL) graphene subjected to atomic-layer deposition of HfO2 and Al2O3 upon different oxygen plasma power levels. We evaluate the damage level and the influence of the HfO2 thickness on graphene. The results indicate that in the case of Al2O3/graphene, whether 1L or FL graphene is strongly damaged under our process conditions. For the case of HfO2/graphene, µRS analysis clearly shows that FL graphene is less disordered than 1L graphene. In addition, the damage levels in FL graphene decrease with the number of layers. Moreover, the FL graphene damage is inversely proportional to the thickness of HfO2 film. Particularly, the bottom layer of twisted bilayer (t-2L) has the salient features of 1L graphene. Therefore, FL graphene allows for controlling/limiting the degree of defect during the PE-ALD HfO2 of dielectrics and could be a good starting material for building field effect transistors, sensors, touch screens and solar cells. Besides, the formation of Hf-C bonds may favor growing high-quality and uniform-coverage dielectric. HfO2 could be a suitable high-K gate dielectric with a scaling capability down to sub-5-nm for graphene-based transistors.

RESUMEN

Grafting of fluorine species on carbon nanostructures has attracted interest due to the effective modification of physical and chemical properties of the starting materials. Various techniques have been employed to achieve a controlled fluorination yield; however, the effect of contaminants is rarely discussed, although they are often present. In the present work, the fluorination of vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes was performed using plasma treatment in a magnetron sputtering chamber with fluorine diluted in an argon atmosphere with an Ar/F2 ratio of 95:5. The effect of heavily diluted fluorine in the precursor gas mixture is investigated by evaluating the modifications in the nanotube structure and the electronic properties upon plasma treatment. The existence of oxygen-based grafted species is associated with background oxygen species present in the plasma chamber in addition to fluorine. The thermal stability and desorption process of the fluorine species grafted on the carbon nanotubes during the fluorine plasma treatment were evaluated by combining different spectroscopic techniques.

RESUMEN

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes of different lengths (150, 300, 500 µm) synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition and decorated with gold nanoparticles were investigated as gas sensitive materials for detecting nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at room temperature. Gold nanoparticles of about 6 nm in diameter were sputtered on the top surface of the carbon nanotube forests to enhance the sensitivity to the pollutant gas. We showed that the sensing response to nitrogen dioxide depends on the nanotube length. The optimum was found to be 300 µm for getting the higher response. When the background humidity level was changed from dry to 50% relative humidity, an increase in the response to NO2 was observed for all the sensors, regardless of the nanotube length.

RESUMEN

The calculation of the reflectance of photonic crystals having form-birefringent anisotropic elements in the crystal unit cell, such as cylinders, often turns out to be problematic, especially when the reflectance spectrum has to be computed according to different crystal orientations as in polycrystals for instance. The method we propose here solves this problem in the specific case of photonic crystals whose periodicities are such that there are no diffraction orders except Bragg reflection in the visible range. For a given crystal orientation, the crystal is sliced into layers and the periodic spatial variations of the dielectric function ε are homogenized. Thanks to that homogenization, the calculation can be performed using standard thin film computation codes. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of our method, we applied it to the case of a natural photonic polycrystal found on the cuticle of Entimus imperialis weevil which is a remarkable example of additive color effect. Although each photonic crystal grain of the polycrystal produces a single bright iridescent color, a non-iridescent green matt coloration is perceived by the human eye due to multiscale averaging effects.

RESUMEN

The large male tarantula Pamphobeteus antinous is easily recognized at the presence of blue-violet iridescent bristles on some of the segments of its legs and pedipalps. The optical properties of these colored appendages have been measured and the internal geometrical structure of the bristles have been investigated. The coloration is shown to be caused by a curved coaxial multilayer which acts as a "cylindrical Bragg mirror".

RESUMEN

This review focuses and summarizes recent studies on the functionalization of carbon nanotubes oriented perpendicularly to their substrate, so-called vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs). The intrinsic properties of individual nanotubes make the VA-CNTs ideal candidates for integration in a wide range of devices, and many potential applications have been envisaged. These applications can benefit from the unidirectional alignment of the nanotubes, the large surface area, the high carbon purity, the outstanding electrical conductivity, and the uniformly long length. However, practical uses of VA-CNTs are limited by their surface characteristics, which must be often modified in order to meet the specificity of each particular application. The proposed approaches are based on the chemical modifications of the surface by functionalization (grafting of functional chemical groups, decoration with metal particles or wrapping of polymers) to bring new properties or to improve the interactions between the VA-CNTs and their environment while maintaining the alignment of CNTs.

RESUMEN

Rhomboidal and spherical metallic-copper nanostructures were encapsulated within well-formed graphitic shells by using a simple chemical method that involved the catalytic decomposition of acetylene over a copper catalyst that was supported on different smectite clays surfaces by ion-exchange. These metallic-copper nanostructures could be separated from the inorganic support and remained stable for months. The choice of the clay support influenced both the shape and the size of the synthesized Cu nanostructures. The synthesized materials and the supported catalysts from which they were produced were studied in detail by TEM and SEM, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, as well as by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

RESUMEN

Three-dimensional photonic-crystal grains were found in the scales of the longhorn beetle Prosopocera lactator (Cerambycidae). The local geometric structure can be described as a face-centered-cubic array of spheres, connected by short rods, reminiscent of the "ball-and-stick" models used by solid-state chemists to visualize atomic structures. Based on scanning electron microscopy, x-ray nanotomography, optical measurements, photonic band-structure calculations, and computer simulations of the reflectance, the desaturated greenish coloration is shown to arise from the observed photonic polycrystalline structure. X-ray nanotomography is revealed as a very promising tool for photonic-crystal morphology studies.
