PURPOSE: Trailing-edge populations at the low-latitude, receding edge of a shifting range face high extinction risk from climate change unless they are able to track optimal environmental conditions through dispersal. METHODS: We fit dispersal models to the locations of 3165 individually-marked black-throated blue warblers (Setophaga caerulescens) in the southern Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, USA from 2002 to 2023. Black-throated blue warbler breeding abundance in this population has remained relatively stable at colder and wetter areas at higher elevations but has declined at warmer and drier areas at lower elevations. RESULTS: Median dispersal distance of young warblers was 917 m (range 23-3200 m), and dispersal tended to be directed away from warm and dry locations. In contrast, adults exhibited strong site fidelity between breeding seasons and rarely dispersed more than 100 m (range 10-1300 m). Consequently, adult dispersal kernels were much more compact and symmetric than natal dispersal kernels, suggesting adult dispersal is unlikely a driving force of declines in this population. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that directional natal dispersal may mitigate fitness costs for trailing-edge populations by allowing individuals to track changing climate and avoid warming conditions at warm-edge range boundaries.

Free clinics may present long wait times. A retrospective chart review was conducted at a free clinic to understand contributing factors. Three wait times (total visit time, lobby wait time, and triage time) were analyzed across 349 patients. Variables included in the models were the total number of patients, providers, and volunteers; interpreter services; social work involvement; medical complexity; new vs. returning patient; scheduled vs. walk-in appointment; transportation provision; medical volunteer training level; and on-site medications and labs. Data analysis with multiple regressions was conducted. Factors that significantly affected wait times included the level of medical complexity (p<.001), medical volunteer training levels (p<.001), in-house labs (p<.001), in-house medications (p=.04), and new patients (p=.01). An intervention involving time benchmarks at the beginning of clinics reduced first-wave lobby wait times (p<.001). Future interventions addressing these factors may reduce wait times at other clinics.

Choroideremia (CHM) is an X-linked retinal degeneration leading to loss of the photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and choroid. Adaptive optics optoretinography is an emerging technique for noninvasive, objective assessment of photoreceptor function. Here, we investigate parafoveal cone function in CHM using adaptive optics optoretinography and compare with cone structure and clinical assessments of vision. Parafoveal cone mosaics of 10 CHM and four normal-sighted participants were imaged with an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope. While acquiring video sequences, a 2 s 550Δ10 nm, 450 nW/deg2 stimulus was presented. Videos were registered and the intensity of each cone in each frame was extracted, normalized, standardized, and aggregated to generate the population optoretinogram (ORG) over time. A gamma-pdf was fit to the ORG and the peak was extracted as ORG amplitude. CHM ORG amplitudes were compared to normal and were correlated with bound cone density, ellipsoid zone to RPE/Bruch's membrane (EZ-to-RPE/BrM) distance, and foveal sensitivity using Pearson correlation analysis. ORG amplitude was significantly reduced in CHM compared to normal (0.22 ± 0.15 vs. 1.34 ± 0.31). In addition, CHM ORG amplitude was positively correlated with cone density, EZ-to-RPE/BrM distance, and foveal sensitivity. Our results demonstrate promise for using ORG as a biomarker of photoreceptor function.

BACKGROUND: Autoantibodies are a hallmark feature of Connective Tissue Diseases (CTD). Their presence in patients with idiopathic interstitial lung disease (ILD) may suggest covert CTD. We aimed to determine the prevalence of CTD autoantibodies in patients diagnosed with idiopathic ILD. METHODS: 499 patient sera were analysed: 251 idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), 206 idiopathic non-specific interstitial pneumonia (iNSIP) and 42 cryptogenic organising pneumonia (COP). Autoantibody status was determined by immunoprecipitation. RESULTS: 2.4% of IPF sera had a CTD-autoantibody compared to 10.2% of iNSIP and 7.3% of COP. 45% of autoantibodies were anti-synthetases. A novel autoantibody targeting an unknown 56 kDa protein was found in seven IPF patients (2.8%) and two NSIP (1%) patients. This was characterised as anti-annexin A11. CONCLUSION: Specific guidance on autoantibody testing and interpretation in patients with ILD could improve diagnostic accuracy. Further work is required to determine the clinical significance of anti-annexin A11.

Male competition conforms to a cost-benefit model, because while aggression may increase reproductive prospects, it can also increase the risk of injury. We hypothesize that an additional cost in aggressive males would be an increase in parasite load associated with a high energy investment into sexual competition. Some of these infections, in turn, may downmodulate the level of host aggression via energetic trade-offs. We staged dyadic male contests in the lab to investigate the relationships of multiple parasites with the agonistic behavior of lizard hosts, Sceloporus occidentalis. We also included both color and behavioral traits from opponents in the analyses because (1) color patches of lizards may serve as intraspecific signals used by conspecifics to assess the quality of opponents, and (2) contests between male lizards fit classical models of escalated aggression, where lizards increase aggression displays in response to an opponent's behavior. The results conform to our hypothesis because male lizards displayed more pushups when they had more ticks. Moreover, some parasites may modulate the levels of aggression because lizards infected by hematic coccidians performed fewer pushups. Interestingly, lizards also displayed fewer pushups when both the chroma and size of the opponent's blue patch were greater. The results thus also supported the role of the blue patch of S. occidentalis as a sexual armament, because it contributed to the deterrence of aggression from opponent lizards. We revealed that natural parasitic infections in lizard hosts can contribute to their agonistic behavior. We encourage future studies to account for parasites in behavioral tests with lizards.

This rapid communication highlights the correlations between digital pathology-whole slide imaging (WSI) and radiomics-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. The research collected 12 patients who had both core needle biopsy and MRI performed to evaluate pathologic complete response (pCR). The results showed that higher collagenous values in pathology data were correlated with more homogeneity, whereas higher tumor expression values in pathology data correlated with less homogeneity in the appearance of tumors on MRI by size zone non-uniformity normalized (SZNN). Higher myxoid values in pathology data are correlated with less similarity of gray-level non-uniformity (GLN) in tumor regions on MRIs, while higher immune values in WSIs correlated with the more joint distribution of smaller-size zones by small area low gray-level emphasis (SALGE) in the tumor regions on MRIs. Pathologic complete response (pCR) was associated with collagen, tumor, and myxoid expression in WSI and GLN and SZNN in radiomic features. The correlations of WSI and radiomic features may further our understanding of the TNBC tumoral microenvironment (TME) and could be used in the future to better tailor the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). This communication will focus on the post-NAC MRI features correlated with pCR and their association with WSI features from core needle biopsies.

BACKGROUND: The athlete's heart (AH) defines the phenotypical changes that occur in response to chronic exercise training. Echocardiographic assessment of the AH is used to calculate LV mass (LVM) and determine chamber geometry. This is, however, interpreted using standard linear (ratiometric) scaling to body surface area (BSA) whereas allometric scaling is now widely recommended. This study (1) determined whether ratiometric scaling of LVM to BSA (LVMiratio) provides a size-independent index in young and veteran athletes of mixed and endurance sports (MES), and (2) calculated size-independent beta exponents for allometrically derived (LVMiallo) to BSA and (3) describes the physiological range of LVMiallo and the classifications of LV geometry. METHODS: 1373 MES athletes consisting of young (< 35 years old) (males n = 699 and females n = 127) and veteran (> 35 years old) (males n = 327 and females n = 220) were included in the study. LVMiratio was calculated as per standard scaling and sex-specific LVMiallo were derived from the population. Cut-offs were defined and geometry was classified according to the new exponents and relative wall thickness. RESULTS: LVMiratio did not produce a size independent index. When tested across the age range the following indexes LVMi/BSA0.7663 and LVMi/BSA0.52, for males and females respectively, were size independent (r = 0.012; P = 0.7 and r = 0.003; P = 0.920). Physiological cut-offs for LVMiallo were 135 g/(m2)0.7663 in male athletes and 121 g/(m2)0.52 in female athletes. Concentric remodelling / hypertrophy was present in 3% and 0% of young male and female athletes and 24% and 17% of veteran male and female athletes, respectively. Eccentric hypertrophy was observed in 8% and 6% of young male and female athletes and 9% and 11% of veteran male and female athletes, respectively. CONCLUSION: In a large cohort of young and veteran male and female MES athletes, LVMiratio to BSA is not size independent. Sex-specific LVMiallo to BSA with LVMi/BSA0.77 and LVMi/BSA0.52 for male and female athletes respectively can be applied across the age-range. Population-based cut-offs of LVMiallo provided a physiological range demonstrating a predominance for normal geometry in all athlete groups with a greater percentage of concentric remodelling/hypertrophy occurring in veteran male and female athletes.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) frequently receive chemotherapy near death. We know less about use of targeted agents and immunotherapy or trends over time. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1,836 AYAs with cancer who died between 2009-2019 after receiving care at one of three sites (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, and Kaiser Permanente Southern California). We reviewed electronic health data and medical records to examine use of cancer-directed therapy in the last 90 days of life, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and investigational drugs. RESULTS: Over the study period, 35% of AYAs received chemotherapy in the last 90 days of life; 24% received targeted therapy, 7% immunotherapy, and 5% investigational drugs. Fifty-six percent received at least one form of systemic cancer-directed therapy in the last 90 days of life. After adjustment for patient sex, race, ethnicity, age, site of care, diagnosis, and years from diagnosis to death, the proportion of AYAs receiving targeted therapy (odds ratio (OR) 1.05 per year of death, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.10, P = .006), immunotherapy (OR 1.27, 95%CI 1.18-1.38, P<.0001), and any cancer-directed therapy (OR1.04, 95%CI 1.01-1.08, P=.01) in the last 90 days of life increased over time. CONCLUSIONS: More than half of AYAs receive cancer therapy in the last 90 days of life, and use of novel agents such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy are increasing over time. While some AYAs may wish to continue cancer therapy while living with advanced disease, efforts are needed to ensure that use of cancer-directed therapy meets preferences of AYAs approaching death.

During preliminary mosquito surveys at Cowley Beach Training Area in north Queensland, Australia, it was found that the utility of the standard encephalitis virus surveillance (EVS) trap for collecting the malaria vector Anopheles farauti (Laveran) adults was compromised by the harsh tropical conditions. With the aim of increasing the survival rate of mosquitoes, we designed a downdraft fan box trap (FBT) that incorporated a screened fan at the bottom of the trap, so mosquitoes did not have to pass through a fan. The FBT was tested against the EVS and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps, where mosquitoes do pass through a fan, and a nonpowered passive box trap (PBT). We conducted 4 trials to compare the quantity and survival of An. farauti and culicine mosquitoes were collected in these traps. Although not significant, the FBT collected more An. farauti than the EVS trap and PBT and significantly less An. farauti than the CDC light trap. However, the FBT improved on the CDC light trap in terms of the survival of An. farauti adults collected, with a significantly higher percentage alive in the FBT (74.6%) than in the CDC light trap (27.5%). Thus, although the FBT did not collect as many anophelines as the CDC, it proved to be superior to current trap systems for collecting large numbers of live and relatively undamaged mosquitoes. Therefore, it is recommended that FBTs be used for collecting An. farauti adults in northern Australia, especially when high survival and sample quality are important.

When invasive and endangered native taxa hybridize, the resulting admixture introduces novel conservation challenges. Across a large region of central California, a hybrid swarm consisting of admixed endangered California tiger salamanders (CTS) (Ambystoma californiense) and introduced barred tiger salamanders (BTS) (Ambystoma mavortium) has replaced native populations, threatening the genetic integrity of CTS and the vernal pool systems they inhabit. We employed a large-scale, genomically informed field experiment to test whether shortening breeding pond hydroperiod would favor native CTS genotypes. We constructed 14 large, seminatural ponds to evaluate the effect of hydroperiod duration on larval survival and mass at metamorphosis. We tracked changes in non-native allele frequencies with a 5237-gene exon capture array and employed a combination of custom Bayesian and generalized linear models to quantify the effect of pond duration on salamander fitness. Earlier work on this system showed hybrid superiority under many conditions and suggested that hybrids are favored in human-modified ponds with artificially long hydroperiods. Consistent with these earlier studies, we found overwhelming evidence for hybrid superiority. Very short hydroperiods substantially reduced the mass (1.1-1.5 fold) and survival probability (10-13 fold) of both native and hybrid larvae, confirming that hydroperiod likely exerts a strong selective pressure in the wild. We identified 86 genes, representing 1.8% of 4723 screened loci, that significantly responded to this hydroperiod-driven selection. In contrast to earlier work, under our more natural experimental conditions, native CTS survival and size at metamorphosis were always less than hybrids, suggesting that hydroperiod management alone will not shift selection to favor native larval genotypes. However, shortening pond hydroperiod may limit productivity of hybrid ponds, complementing other strategies to remove hybrids while maintaining vernal pool ecosystems. This study confirms and expands on previous work that highlights the importance of hydroperiod management to control invasive aquatic species.


Manejo de híbridos invasores mediante la manipulación del hidroperiodo de los estanques en el sistema de una salamandra en peligro de extinción Resumen La hibridación entre un taxón nativo en peligro y uno invasor introduce nuevos retos para la conservación. Una plaga híbrida de salamandras tigre de California (STC) (Ambystoma californiense), especie en peligro, y salamandras tigre barradas (STB) (Ambystoma mavortium) introducidas ha reemplazado a las poblaciones nativas en una región amplia del centro de California, lo que amenaza la integridad genética de las STC y el sistema de estanques vernales que habitan. Realizamos un experimento de campo a gran escala y con información genética para probar si la reducción del hidroperiodo reproductivo del estanque favorecería al genotipo de las STC nativas. Construimos 14 estanques seminaturales grandes para analizar el efecto de la duración del hidroperiodo sobre la supervivencia y masa larval durante la metamorfosis. PURPOSE: To compare peak cone density predicted from outer segment length measured on optical coherence tomography with direct measures of peak cone density from adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy. METHODS: Data from 42 healthy participants with direct peak cone density measures and optical coherence tomography line scans available were used in this study. Longitudinal reflectivity profiles were analyzed using two methods of identifying the boundaries of the ellipsoid and interdigitation zones to estimate maximum outer segment length: peak-to-peak and the slope method. These maximum outer segment length values were then used to predict peak cone density using a previously described geometrical model. A comparison between predicted and direct peak cone density measures was then performed. RESULTS: The mean bias between observers for estimating maximum outer segment length across methods was less than 2 µm. Cone density predicted from the peak-to-peak method against direct cone density measures showed a mean bias of 6,812 cones/mm2 with 50% of participants displaying a 10% difference or less between predicted and direct cone density values. Cone density derived from the slope method showed a mean bias of -17,929 cones/mm2 relative to direct cone density measures, with only 41% of participants demonstrating less than a 10% difference between direct and predicted cone density values. CONCLUSION: Predicted foveal cone density derived from peak-to-peak outer segment length measurements using commercial optical coherence tomography show modest agreement with direct measures of peak cone density from adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy. The methods used here are imperfect predictors of cone density, however, further exploration of this relationship could reveal a clinically relevant marker of cone structure.

RESUMEN

Obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common genetically transmitted cardiomyopathy that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite contemporary treatments and interventions, the management of patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy remains poorly defined compared with other branches of cardiology. In this review, we discuss established and novel therapeutic interventions in patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with a focus on percutaneous and surgical strategies including surgical myectomy, mitral valve repair or replacement, percutaneous alcohol septal ablation, pacemaker and cardioverter-defibrillator implantation, septal embolization, radiofrequency endocardial catheter ablation, and percutaneous intramyocardial septal radiofrequency ablation.

BACKGROUND: Image and performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs) are commonly used in resistance trained (RT) individuals and negatively impact left ventricular (LV) structure and function. Few studies have investigated the impact of IPEDs on atrial structure and function with no previous studies investigating bi-atrial strain. Additionally, the impact of current use vs. past use of IPEDs is unclear. METHODS: Utilising a cross-sectional design, male (n = 81) and female (n = 15) RT individuals were grouped based on IPED user status: current (n = 57), past (n = 19) and non-users (n = 20). Participants completed IPED questionnaires, anthropometrical measurements, electrocardiography, and transthoracic echocardiography with strain imaging. Structural cardiac data was allometrically scaled to body surface area (BSA) according to laws of geometric similarity. RESULTS: Body mass and BSA were greater in current users than past and non-users of IPEDs (p < 0.01). Absolute left atrial (LA) volume (60 ± 17 vs 46 ± 12, p = 0.001) and right atrial (RA) area (19 ± 4 vs 15 ± 3, p < 0.001) were greater in current users than non-users but this difference was lost following scaling (p > 0.05). Left atrial reservoir (p = 0.008, p < 0.001) and conduit (p < 0.001, p < 0.001) strain were lower in current users than past and non-users (conduit: current = 22 ± 6, past = 29 ± 9 and non-users = 31 ± 7 and reservoir: current = 33 ± 8, past = 39 ± 8, non-users = 42 ± 8). Right atrial reservoir (p = 0.015) and conduit (p = 0.007) strain were lower in current than non-users (conduit: current = 25 ± 8, non-users = 33 ± 10 and reservoir: current = 36 ± 10, non-users = 44 ± 13). Current users showed reduced LV diastolic function (A wave: p = 0.022, p = 0.049 and E/A ratio: p = 0.039, p < 0.001) and higher LA stiffness (p = 0.001, p < 0.001) than past and non-users (A wave: current = 0.54 ± 0.1, past = 0.46 ± 0.1, non-users = 0.47 ± 0.09 and E/A ratio: current = 1.5 ± 0.5, past = 1.8 ± 0.4, non-users = 1.9 ± 0.4, LA stiffness: current = 0.21 ± 0.7, past = 0.15 ± 0.04, non-users = 0.15 ± 0.07). CONCLUSION: Resistance trained individuals using IPEDs have bi-atrial enlargement that normalises with allometric scaling, suggesting that increased size is, in part, associated with increased body size. The lower LA and RA reservoir and conduit strain and greater absolute bi-atrial structural parameters in current than non-users of IPEDs suggests pathological adaptation with IPED use, although the similarity in these parameters between past and non-users suggests reversibility of pathological changes with withdrawal.

RESUMEN

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a common inherited cardiac condition where the myocardium progressively thickens in the absence of abnormal loading conditions. Left ventricular hypertrophy often leads to outflow tract obstruction, and this confers significant mortality and morbidity implications. Septal reduction therapies aim to relieve the obstruction in an attempt to reduce the burden of symptoms and potentially improve prognosis. However, both surgical and catheter-based approaches to septal reduction carry risks. At present, international guidelines and expert consensus statements suggest surgical myomectomy is the gold-standard treatment. In this point-counterpoint review, we discuss why in our opinion this recommendation should be reconsidered. We hope to cover the history of catheter based septal reduction therapies and the significant advances made over the last two decades. We also hope to show why we believe the current evidence shows catheter-based alcohol septal ablation is superior to surgical myomectomy.

Motor impairment has a profound impact on a significant number of individuals, leading to a substantial demand for rehabilitation services. Through brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), people with severe motor disabilities could have improved communication with others and control appropriately designed robotic prosthetics, so as to (at least partially) restore their motor abilities. BCI plays a pivotal role in promoting smoother communication and interactions between individuals with motor impairments and others. Moreover, they enable the direct control of assistive devices through brain signals. In particular, their most significant potential lies in the realm of motor rehabilitation, where BCIs can offer real-time feedback to assist users in their training and continuously monitor the brain's state throughout the entire rehabilitation process. Hybridization of different brain-sensing modalities, especially functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG), has shown great potential in the creation of BCIs for rehabilitating the motor-impaired populations. EEG, as a well-established methodology, can be combined with fNIRS to compensate for the inherent disadvantages and achieve higher temporal and spatial resolution. This paper reviews the recent works in hybrid fNIRS-EEG BCIs for motor rehabilitation, emphasizing the methodologies that utilized motor imagery. An overview of the BCI system and its key components was introduced, followed by an introduction to various devices, strengths and weaknesses of different signal processing techniques, and applications in neuroscience and clinical contexts. The review concludes by discussing the possible challenges and opportunities for future development.

INTRODUCTION: People who metabolize nicotine more quickly are generally less successful at quitting smoking. However, the mechanisms that link individual differences in the nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR), a phenotypic biomarker of the rate of nicotine clearance, to smoking outcomes are unclear. We tested the hypotheses that higher NMR is associated with greater smoking reinforcement, general craving, and cue-induced cigarette craving in a treatment-seeking sample. METHODS: Participants were 252 adults who smoke cigarettes enrolled in a randomized controlled smoking cessation trial (NCT03262662) conducted in Buffalo, New York, USA. Participants completed the Choice Behavior Under Cued Conditions (CBUCC) paradigm, a laboratory choice procedure, ~1 week before the first cessation treatment visit, at which time a saliva sample was collected for NMR assessment. On each CBUCC trial, participants reported cigarette craving during cue presentation (cigarette, water) and spent $0.01-0.25 for a chance (5%-95%) to sample the cue (1 puff, sip), providing measures of smoking reinforcement (spending for cigarettes vs. water), general cigarette craving (averaged across cigarette and water cues), and cue-specific craving (cigarette craving during cigarette vs. water cues). RESULTS: As observed in prior work, the NMR was significantly higher among white and female participants. As expected, both spending and cigarette craving were significantly greater on cigarette compared to water trials. However, contrary to our hypotheses, higher NMR was not associated with greater smoking reinforcement, general craving, or cue-specific craving. CONCLUSIONS: The present data do not support that smoking reinforcement or craving are related to nicotine metabolism among individuals seeking to quit smoking. IMPLICATIONS: Though greater smoking reinforcement, general craving, and cue-specific craving are hypothesized to be linked to faster nicotine metabolism, there was no evidence of such relationships in the present sample of adults seeking to quit smoking. Further research, including replication and consideration of alternate hypotheses, is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms by which the NMR is related to smoking cessation.

The manifestations of the athlete's heart can create diagnostic challenges during an echocardiographic assessment. The classifications of the morphological and functional changes induced by sport participation are often beyond 'normal limits' making it imperative to identify any overlap between pathology and normal physiology. The phenotype of the athlete's heart is not exclusive to one chamber or function. Therefore, in this narrative review, we consider the effects of sporting discipline and training volume on the holistic athlete's heart, as well as demographic factors including ethnicity, body size, sex, and age.

Background: Recommendations for the echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular (LV) mass in the athlete suggest the use of the linear method using a two-tiered classification system (2TC). The aims of this study were to compare the linear method and the area-length (A-L) method for LV mass in elite rugby football league (RFL) athletes and to establish how any differences impact the classification of LV geometry using 2TC and four-tier (4TC) classification systems. Methods: Two hundred and twenty (220) male RFL athletes aged 25 ± 5 (14-34 years) were recruited. All athletes underwent echocardiography and LV mass was calculated by the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) corrected Linear equation (2D) and the A-L method. Left ventricular mass Index (LVMi) was used with relative wall thickness to determine geometry in the 2TC and with concentricity and LV end diastolic volume index for the 4TC. Method specific recommended cut-offs were utilised. Results: Higher values of absolute (197 ± 34 vs. 181 ± 34 g; p < 0.0001) and indexed (92 ± 13 vs. 85 ± 13 g/m2; p < 0.0001) measures of LV mass were obtained from A-L compared to the linear method. Normal LV geometry was demonstrated in 98.2% and 80% of athletes whilst eccentric hypertrophy in 1.4% and 19.5% for linear and A-L respectively. Both methods provided 0.5% as having concentric remodelling and 0% as having concentric hypertrophy. Allocation to the 4TC resulted in 97% and 80% with normal geometry, 0% and 8.6% with eccentric dilated hypertrophy, 0% and 7.7% with eccentric non-dilated hypertrophy, 1.4% and 0.5% with concentric remodelling and 1.4% and 3% with concentric non-dilated hypertrophy for linear and A-L methods respectively. No participants had concentric dilated hypertrophy from either methods. Conclusion: The linear and A-L method for calculation of LV mass in RFL athletes are not interchangeable with significantly higher values obtained using A-L method impacting on geometry classification. More athletes present with eccentric hypertrophy using 2TC and eccentric dilated/non-dilated using 4TC. Further studies should be aimed at establishing the association of A-L methods of LV mass and application of the 4TC to the multi-factorial demographics of the athlete.

Significance: To effectively apply functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)/diffuse optical tomography (DOT) devices, a three-dimensional (3D) model of the position of each optode on a subject's scalp and the positions of that subject's cranial landmarks are critical. Obtaining this information accurately in infants, who rarely stop moving, is an ongoing challenge. Aim: We propose a smartphone-based registration system that can potentially achieve a full-head 3D scan of a 6-month-old infant instantly. Approach: The proposed system is remotely controlled by a custom-designed Bluetooth controller. The scanned images can either be manually or automatically aligned to generate a 3D head surface model. Results: A full-head 3D scan of a 6-month-old infant can be achieved within 2 s via this system. In testing on a realistic but static infant head model, the average Euclidean error of optode position using this device was 1.8 mm. Conclusions: This low-cost 3D registration system therefore has the potential to permit accurate and near-instant fNIRS/DOT spatial registration.
