RESUMEN

This study aimed to compare the postpartum uterine dynamics of primiparous precocious (PP), primiparous conventional (PC) and multiparous conventional (MC) Bos indicus beef cows. For this purpose, PP (n = 8), PC (n = 18) and MC (n = 12) cows were enrolled in this study. These cows were evaluated at 20 and 10 days prepartum and weekly from parturition to 42 days postpartum (DPP). During this period, body weight (BW), subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and serum concentrations of glucose, ß-hydroxybutyrate, albumin and haptoglobin were measured. Proportion of polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells, and abundance of mRNA transcripts of genes involved in uterine inflammation and uterine health were evaluated. The PP cows had lower (p < .05) BW and SFT than that for PC and MC cows during the study period. The serum concentration of albumin after 35 DPP was lower (p < .05) in PP cows. The PP cows had the highest proportion of PMN on 28 and 35 DPP compared to PC and MC cows. The relative mRNA abundance of IL-1ß and IL-8 increased after 21 DPP in PP cows compared to the other groups. The PC had the highest, MC had an intermediate, and PP cows had the lowest relative abundance of IL10 mRNA. Overall, these findings indicated that uterine inflammation was more pronounced in PP cows. Moreover, based on the proportion of PMN and abundance of transcripts associated with inflammation in the uterus, PP cows may require a longer period to recover their uterine health after calving.

Pitaya, Hylocereus costaricensis, is a species of the Cactaceae family and originated in the Americas (Ortiz & Livera, 1995). It has been cultivated in Brazil and has shown a great potential for fruit production and is currently present in several markets (Faleiro et al. 2021). In July 2018, infected plants of pitaya with symptoms of anthracnose were obtained from an orchard in Fortaleza, Ceará Brazil, (3°44'24.5"S 38°34'30.8"W), with 50% disease incidence. The symptoms observed consisted of well-defined and depressed stains, that initially appeared as reddish-orange spots and were surrounded by a border of dark-brown color. As the lesion progressed, the center became light brown or whitish in color, with black dots appearing later. Four cladodes were collected with anthracnose symptoms. The pathogen was isolated from symptomatic cladodes, which were surface disinfected with 1% v/v NaClO and 70% v/v ethanol, rinsed with sterile distilled water, transferred onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium and incubated under a light/dark (12h/12h) photoperiod. Two isolates were recovered from the lesions on cladodes. Pure cultures were obtained from single conidia produced on colonies grown on PDA medium, using an inoculation needle under a microscope. Colonies on PDA exhibited white aerial mycelia with an orange conidial mass. The colonies were light grey in the front and light orange in the reverse of the plate. Morphological features suggested that the isolates had the same characteristics as previously described for Colletotrichum spp. (Weir et al., 2012). In order to identify the species of the isolates, the genomic DNA of UFCM 0684 and UFCM 0685 isolates was extracted using the CTAB method and the ITS region, TUB2, ACT, GS, GAPDH gene fragments were amplified. PCR products were sequenced and the resulting sequences were submitted to phylogenetic analyses based on maximum likelihood for the combination of the genes. The isolates grouped within Colletotrichum tropicale with 99% bootstrap support. The sequences obtained in this study were deposited in GenBank as ACT (accession no. OL799311, OL799312), TUB2 (OL799313; OL799314), GAPDH (OL799315, OL799316), GS (OL799317; OL799318) and ITS (OL799319; OL799320). After that, the UFCM 0685 isolate was selected to study for further characterization. Conidia (n = 50) were 13.7 (length) × 4.7 µm (width) in average, hyaline, aseptate and cylindrical. To complete Koch's postulates, pathogenicity tests were performed in moist chamber for one week at 25°C with 80% relative humidity on a 12 h fluorescent light/dark photoperiod. The cladodes were wounded using a sterilized needle and inoculated with 10 µl of a conidial suspension (1 × 106 conidia/ml) on three cladodes with five wounds each. The same number of uninoculated cladode was used as control. The experiment was performed twice. Two weeks later, all inoculated cladodes showed necrotic symptoms, which were similar to the symptoms previously observed in the field. The uninoculated cladode remained symptomless. The fungus was reisolated from the inoculated cladode and its morphological characteristics were similar to the original isolate. Colletotrichum tropicale has been reported to cause anthracnose on H. costaricensis in Mexico (Nunez-Garcia et al. 2023), H. undatus, H. monocanthus and H. megalanthus (Evallo et al. 2022). For the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of anthracnose caused by C. tropicale in H. costaricensis in Brazil.

In November 2021, stem gray blight symptoms were seen on two dragon fruit (pitaya) species (Hylocereus megalanthus and H. polyrhizus) in an orchard with 100% disease incidence in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil (3°44'24.5"S 38°34'30.8"W). The symptoms were initially yellowish to dark brown lesions, and as the symptoms progressed, the lesions turned grayish with small black pycnidia in the center. Isolation was carried out by disinfecting small pieces of the symptomatic stems in 70% ethanol for 1 min, followed by 1% NaOCl for 1 min, and then rinsed three times with sterile distilled water. Excess water was removed using sterile filter paper. Then the stem fragments were placed on PDA media. Colonies produced small black pycnidia with conidia and some were sterile after 68 days of incubation. Two monosporic isolates were obtained from the colonies: UFCM 0708 from H. megalanthus and the UFCM 0710 from H. polyrhizus, which were used for pathogenicity test, morphological and molecular identification. The colony on PDA was smoke gray with aerial mycelium and the reverse was smoke grey to dark grey. The α-conidia from UFCM 0708 and UFCM 0710 were hyaline, aseptate and fusiform and measured 6.4 to 9.7 (8.0) x 1.2 to 2.4 (1.7) µm and 6 to 13.1 (8.2) x 1.7 to 2.4 (2.0) µm, respectively. The ß-conidia from UFCM 0708 and UFCM 0710 were hyaline, aseptate and filiform and measured 15 to 22.5 (18.8) x 0.6 to 1.7 (1.0) µm, and 17.2 to 27.5 (22.3) x 0.5 to 1.0 (0.8) µm (n=30), respectively. This morphology placed the isolates as Diaporthe sp. (Udayanga et al. 2012). For further confirmation, genomic DNA was extracted from the isolates (UFCM 0708 and UFCM 0710), and beta-tubulin (TUB2) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1) gene fragments were amplified. BLASTn search results with isolates TEF1 and TUB2 sequences varied from 98.58% to 99.52% identity to the ex-type sequence of Diaporthe arecae (CBS 161.64). Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated sequences alignment carried out using the Maxinum-likelihood and Bayesian Inference analysis placed the isolates within D. arecae clade with 86% bootstrap and 0.99 posterior probabilities support. The sequences obtained in this study were deposited in GenBank (TEF1: OP534720 and OP534722; TUB2: OP534717 and OP534719). The isolates were confirmed as D. arecae based on molecular analysis and morphological characteristics (Gomes et al. 2013). Koch's postulates were completed as described by Karim et al. (2019) through the inoculation of six stems of each dragon fruit (pitaya) species. The stems were wounded by removing a 5 mm diameter disc and after that they were inoculated with a 5 mm diameter mycelial plug from 5 days old PDA plates. PDA plugs were used as control. Each stem was covered with a plastic bag and sterilized water was added into the sterilized filter paper to maintain humidity. The bags were kept in a room at day and night temperature of 25 ± 2 °C. The same symptoms seen in the field appeared on the stems 21 days after inoculation. The control stems remained symptomless. Diaporthe arecae have been reported on H. polyrhizus in Malaysia (Huda-Shakirah et al. 2021). To our knowledge, this is the first report of D. arecae on H. megalanthus and H. polyrhizus in Brazil.

Thermoelectric phenomena, such as the Anomalous Nernst and Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effects, are promising for sensor applications in the area of renewable energy. In the case of flexible electronic materials, the request is even larger because they can be integrated into devices having complex shape surfaces. Here, we reveal that Pt promotes an enhancement of the thermoelectric response in Co-rich ribbon/Pt heterostructures due to the spin-to-charge conversion. Moreover, we demonstrated that the employment of the thermopiles configuration in this system increases the induced thermoelectric current, a fact related to the considerable decrease in the electric resistance of the system. By comparing present findings with the literature, we were able to design a flexible thermopile based on LSSE without the lithography process. Additionally, the thermoelectric voltage found in the studied flexible heterostructures is comparable to the ones verified for rigid systems.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between chronic Anaplasma marginale and Babesia spp. infection and hematological parameters of pregnant and non-pregnant taurine heifers. Blood samples from 94 females were collected on the first day (D-10) of timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol and on pregnancy diagnosis (D+34). Hematological parameters were determined and compared between pregnant (PG) and non-pregnant (NPG) heifers, and within group at different sampling days. Real-time PCR (qPCR) was used to determine A. marginale and Babesia bovis infection, and for absolute quantification of Babesia spp. between PG and NPG groups. Correlation analysis was performed between the number of gDNA copies (CN) of Babesia spp. and hematological parameters. On D-10, mean hemoglobin concentration was higher for NPG, and hematocrit and total plasma protein were higher on D+34 for both groups. There was no difference in Babesia spp. CN between groups. In the first qPCR, all heifers were positive for A. marginale and B. bovis. Significant correlations were found between hemoglobin and erythrocyte and between hemoglobin and hematocrit (r = 0.8082 and r = 0.3009, respectively). Low levels of A. marginale and Babesia spp. did not affect hematological parameters of chronically infected pregnant and non-pregnant taurine heifers.

The number of people with central nervous system (CNS) injuries increases worldwide and only a few therapies are used to mitigate neurological damage. Crude extracts, compounds, and isolated molecules obtained from plants have neuroprotective effects; however, their actions on the central nervous system are still not fully understood. This systematic review investigated the neuroprotective effects of crude extracts, compound, and isolated molecules obtained from plants in different CNS lesions. This PICO (Population/Problem, Intervention, Control, Outcome) systematic review included in vivo and in vitro studies that used small rodents as experimental models of CNS injuries (P) treated with crude extracts, compounds, and/or isolated molecules obtained from plants (I), compared to non-intervention conditions (C), and that showed a neuroprotective effect (O). Fourteen out of 5,521 studies were selected for qualitative analysis. Several neuroprotective effects (improvement of antioxidant activity, modulation of the inflammatory response, tissue preservation, motor and cognitive recovery) in the brain and spinal cord were reported after treatment with different doses of crude extracts (10 studies), compounds (2 studies), and isolated molecules (2 studies). Crude extracts, compounds, or isolated molecules obtained from plants showed promising neuroprotective effects against several CNS injuries in both the brain and spinal cord, regardless of gender and age, through the modulation of inflammatory activity and oxidative biochemistry, tissue preservation, and recovery of motor and cognitive activity.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the influence of the e-vol DX BAR filter on the diagnostic accuracy of complete and incomplete vertical root fractures (VRFs). METHODS: Twenty single-rooted teeth were selected. The tooth crowns were removed, and the root canals were prepared up to a 40/.06 instrument (ProTaper Next). Each specimen was scanned in a Prexion 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) device, in a dry human skull, in 4 different situations: no root canal filling, gutta-percha, fiberglass post, and metal post. The specimens were fractured in a universal testing machine by using a customized wedge. Each specimen was reinspected to confirm the presence of incomplete VRFs. Another set of CBCT scans was performed. Then, the fractures were completed in the universal testing machine, the teeth were reinspected, and the CBCT images were acquired again. Images were assessed by using the e-Vol DX software system, with the BAR filter and with the original images, for the diagnosis of VRFs. Statistical analysis was performed by using the DeLong and McNemar tests for the comparison of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values. RESULTS: The use of the BAR filter did not improve the diagnostic values of AUC, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in both fracture patterns (P > .05). Incomplete VRFs presented significantly lower AUC, accuracy, and sensitivity compared with complete VRFs (P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: The BAR filter did not improve the diagnostic accuracy of VRFs. The intracanal materials also did not influence the diagnosis. Incomplete VRFs were highly associated with a decrease in sensitivity.

The intensification of ewe production, focusing on increasing prolificity, results in a higher incidence of metabolic disorders, especially in the transition period, which can lead to production losses with consequences for the health of the animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile in transition period Lacaune ewes according to the parity and litter size born and its influence on the transference of passive immunity. Nineteen Lacaune ewes, with initial mean body weight of 76.36 ± 10.37 kg (SD), kept in a semi-extensive system and receiving the same diet, were used. Ewes were classified according to parity (primiparous and multiparous) and the litter size born at parturition (1, 2, and 3). On days - 14, - 7, and - 4 of the expected date of parturition and on days 1, 4, 7, and 14 days postpartum, blood sampling, the evaluation of the body condition score (BCS), and the weighing of animals were performed. Blood samples were taken from the lambs 48 h after birth. Colostrum was collected up to 6 h postpartum to determine the brix percentage. Serum concentrations of total plasma proteins (TPP), albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), paraoxonase (PON1), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were evaluated. In lambs, the blood parameters evaluated were TPP, albumin, GGT, and PON1. Lamb plasma was used to estimate colostrum efficiency, brix percentage immunity, and total plasma protein (PPT). Productive data, pre- and postpartum metabolic variables for ewes, lambs, and those related to colostrum brix were analyzed. The BCS had a reduction (p < 0.0001) in the postpartum period, which is evidenced on days 7 and 14 (2.88 and 2.73, respectively). Serum concentration of BHB presented the highest concentrations in the prepartum period for ewes that gave birth to triplets, from day - 14, and for ewes that gave birth to twins on day - 4 (p = 0.0245). Serum concentration of NEFA demonstrated the highest value on day 14 in primiparous (1.07; p = 0.0402). Calcium had the lowest concentrations on day 1 (8.85 mg/dl, p < 0.0001) and magnesium on day 3 (1.79 mg/dl, p < 0.0001) postpartum. The multiparous with two lambs had higher brix percentages (30.5%), and the lowest value was observed in primiparous ewes that gave birth to a single lamb (27.06%; p = 0.0395). Triplet lambs had the lowest weight (3.73 kg, p = 0.0007), and the best brix percentage in plasma was observed in twins (10.29%, p = 0.0174). Regardless of the parity, the ewes that presented the greatest metabolic challenge were those that gave birth to triplets, and these lambs presented the worst immunity and the lowest live weight. The quality of colostrum was influenced by the parity, and multiparous ewes that gave birth to triplets had the lowest brix percentage in the colostrum.

Fe3Co67Cr3Si15B12 ribbons with a high degree of flexibility and excellent corrosion stability were produced by rapid quenching technique. Their structural, magnetic, and thermomagnetic (Anomalous Nernst Effect) properties were studied both in an as-quenched (NR) state and after stress annealing during 1 h at the temperature of 350 °C and a specific load of 230 MPa (AR). X-ray diffraction was used to verify the structural characteristics of our ribbons. Static magnetic properties were explored by inductive technique and vibrating sample magnetometry. The thermomagnetic curves investigated through the Anomalous Nernst Effect are consistent with the obtained magnetization results, presenting a linear response in the thermomagnetic signal, an interesting feature for sensor applications. Additionally, Anomalous Nernst Effect coefficient SANE values of 2.66µV/K and 1.93µV/K were estimated for the as-quenched and annealed ribbons, respectively. The interplay of the low magnetostrictive properties, soft magnetic behavior, linearity of the thermomagnetic response, and flexibility of these ribbons place them as promising systems to probe curved surfaces and propose multifunctional devices, including magnetic field-specialized sensors.

The present study reported a method for inducing incomplete root fracture in human extracted teeth for the purpose of evaluating the merits of different diagnostic imaging techniques. Thirty-five single-rooted teeth were inspected under magnification and transillumination to exclude previously fractured teeth. Tooth crowns were removed, and the root canals were prepared up to the ProTaper Next X4 (40.06) file. Each root was lined with wax and embedded in a polystyrene resin block. The setup was attached to a universal testing machine for pressing a customized conical wedge (diameter at tip: 0.6 mm; taper: 0.2 mm/mm) into the instrumented canal with a 2 kN load at 5 mm/min. The machine was programmed to stop after a sudden 10% drop in loading force. Each specimen was removed from the resin block and inspected under × 20 magnification and transillumination to identify the fracture characteristics (pattern, surfaces and root-third affected). The gap width of each specimen was measured at different locations along the fracture line. The protocol induced incomplete vertical root fractures in all specimens. Fracture widths were < 100 µm in all specimens (mean gap width: 34.9 µm). The proposed methodology was successful in inducing incomplete vertical root fractures with characteristics that resemble the clinical presentation of these conditions. The method is easy to execute, highly reproducible and helps to minimize bias in laboratory studies that aims to mimic vertical root fractures.

This research aims to describe the cost-benefit analysis of selective therapy adoption for clinical mastitis based on the identification of pathogens using on-farm culture system. A survey of clinical mastitis cases was carried out in the database of a dairy herd with 500 lactating Holstein cows, during the period of September 2017 to October 2019. Variables such as frequency of cases, main pathogens identified, costs with antibiotic therapies and milk disposal were evaluated and compared between one year before (P1) and after (P2), the farm's selective therapy adoption. During the study period, 599 cases of clinical mastitis were identified, 361 in P1 and 238 in P2. The average cost of therapies was US74.33 and US91.82 for P1 and P2. Considering the two years of the study, the estimated cost of treating clinical mastitis was US45,444.31, of which US$27,559.97 were spent in P1 and US17,884.34 in P2. Based on the result of the identification of the pathogen types associated with clinical mastitis, selective therapy demonstrated cost reduction already in the first year of implementation.(AU)


Esta pesquisa objetivou descrever a análise custo-benefício da adoção de terapia seletiva para mastite clínica a partir da identificação de patógenos por meio da cultura em placas na fazenda. Foi realizado um levantamento de casos clínicos de mastite no banco de dados de uma fazenda com 500 vacas Holandesas em lactação, durante o período de setembro de 2017 à outubro de 2019. Foram avaliadas as variáveis frequência de casos, principais patógenos identificados, custos com antibioticoterapia e descarte de leite foram, as quais foram comparados entre um ano antes (P1) e após (P2), à adoção da terapia seletiva na fazenda. Durante o período do estudo, foram identificados 599 casos de mastite clínica, sendo 361 em P1 e 238 em P2. O custo médio das terapias foi de US74,33 e US91,82 para P1 e P2. Considerando os dois anos de estudo, o custo estimado do tratamento da mastite clínica foi de US45.444,31, dos quais US27.559,97 foram gastos em P1 e US17.884,34 em P2. Com base na identificação dos tipos de patógenos associados à mastite clínica, a terapia seletiva demonstrou redução de custos já no primeiro ano de implantação.(AU)

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a associação entre infecção crônica por Anaplasma marginale e Babesia spp. e parâmetros hematológicos de novilhas taurinas prenhes e não prenhes. Sangue de 94 fêmeas foi coletado no primeiro dia (D-10) do protocolo de inseminação artificial em tempo fixo (IATF) e no diagnóstico de gestação (D+34). Parâmetros hematológicos foram comparados entre novilhas prenhes (PG) e não prenhes (NPG) e dentro dos grupos entre dias de coleta. Usando-se PCR em tempo real (qPCR), determinou-se a infecção por A. marginale e Babesia bovis e quantificação absoluta de Babesia spp. Entre os grupos PG e NPG. A análise de correlação foi realizada entre o número de cópias (CN) de Babesia spp. e parâmetros hematológicos. No D-10, a concentração de hemoglobina foi maior para NPG e hematócrito, e proteína plasmática total foram maiores em D+34 para ambos os grupos. Não houve diferença para CN de Babesia spp. entre os grupos. Na primeira qPCR, todas as novilhas foram positivas para A. marginale e B. bovis. Correlações significativas foram encontradas entre hemoglobina/eritrócito e hemoglobina/hematócrito (r=0,8082 e r=0,3009, respectivamente). The transition period in taurine dairy cows is widely reported in the literature. However, little is known about the metabolism of zebu animals and their crossbreeding with taurine breeds during this phase. Considering the importance of these breeds in tropical and subtropical regions, this study aimed to evaluate the feed intake, milk production and hepatic metabolism in Holstein, Gyr and Girolando-F1 (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) heifers presenting high body condition score (BCS) during the transition period (prepartum weeks -2 and -1 and postpartum weeks +1 and + 3). Twelve heifers of each genetic group were used, totaling 36 animals. Variables considered were blood metabolites related to liver function, dry matter intake (DMI), body condition score (BCS), body weight (BW), milk yield (MY), and fat and protein concentrations in milk. Gyr heifers had the lowest concentrations of paraoxonase in weeks -2 (43.13 U/mL), -1 (62.10 U/mL) and + 3 (77.89 U/mL), albumin in week -1 (3.07 g/dL), and the highest concentration of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in weeks -2 (1.35 mmol/L) and -1 (1.19 mmol/L). ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and NEFA values were negatively correlated with prepartum DMI (-0.82 and -0.57, respectively), while paraoxonase was positively correlated to DMI (0.54). Gyr cows were more susceptible to inflammation despite having intermediate BCS and lower milk yield. Girolando-F1 animals showed the highest BCS among groups, although their hepatic metabolism had better results than Gyr cows. Holstein animals had lower lipomobilization and higher DMI and MY between breeds. These results suggest that the metabolism of zebu and crossbred cows does not react equally to the metabolism of Holstein cows concerning stress factors such as transition period and obesity. Therefore, the present study addresses an emerging theme that highlights the need for differentiated management during the transition period between the different breeds studied in order to ensure the maximum health and welfare of these animals.

The plasticity of the central nervous system (CNS) allows the change of neuronal organization and function after environmental stimuli or adaptation after sensory deprivation. The so-called critical period (CP) for neuroplasticity is the time window when each sensory brain region is more sensitive to changes and adaptations. This time window is usually different for each primary sensory area: somatosensory (S1), visual (V1), and auditory (A1). Several intrinsic mechanisms are also involved in the start and end of the CP for neuroplasticity; however, which is its duration in S1, VI, and A1? This systematic review evaluated studies on the determination of these time windows in small rodents. The careful study selection and methodological quality assessment indicated that the CP for neuroplasticity is different among the sensory areas, and the brain maps are influenced by environmental stimuli. Moreover, there is an overlap between the time windows of some sensory areas. Finally, the time window duration of the CP for neuroplasticity is predominant in S1.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxemia has been negatively associated with fertility. This study aimed to investigate the effect of LPS-induced inflammation on gene expression associated with bovine fertility in the uterus and oviduct. Sixteen healthy heifers were divided into two groups. The LPS group (n = 8) received two intravenous (i.v.) injections of 0.5 µg/kg of body weight of LPS with a 24-h interval, and the control group (n = 8) received two i.v. injections of saline solution with the same interval of time. All the animals had the follicular wave synchronized. Three days after the second injection of LPS, all animals were slaughtered and uterine and oviduct samples were collected. Gene expression associated with inflammatory response, thermal and oxidative stresses, oviduct environment quality, and uterine environment quality was evaluated. Body temperature and leucogram demonstrated that LPS induced an acute systemic inflammatory response. In the uterus, the expression of PTGS2 and NANOG genes was downregulated by the LPS challenge. However, no change in expression was observed in the other evaluated genes in the uterus, nor those evaluated in the oviduct. In conclusion, the inflammatory process triggered by LPS did not persist in the uterus and oviduct 3 days after challenge with LPS. Nonetheless, reduction in PTGS2 and NANOG expression in the uterus suggested that, indirectly, LPS may have a prolonged effect, which may affect corpus luteum and endometrial functions.

ABSTRACT To identify the main incidental findings (IFs) in the head and neck region using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and the impact on patient's live. The study was carried out using an integrative review method, starting with a guiding question followed by searches in the databases Pubmed, Scopus, Virtual Health Library and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source for articles from 2009 until 2019. Forty-one articles became the object of this work. The incidental findings most reported by the articles are present in the bone and TMJ regions, with 35 different AIs being found. However, they are also common in the airways, such as mucosal thickening and retention mucosal cysts. Among the dental, the most pointed are impacted and supernumerary teeth. In the group of soft tissue calcifications, tonsillolite and calcification of the hyoid-style process are the most frequent. Atheroma and malignant lesions are less prevalent, but important due to the impact on patient's life. The main incident findings are bone / TMJ, followed by dental, soft tissue calcifications, airways and other findings. Most of them do not affect patient's life. However, some IFs require immediate interventions and are generally associated with elderly patients. Finally, more than half of the studies pointed out that the incidental findings are located in an extragnatic region.


RESUMO Identificar os principais achados incidentais na região de cabeça e pescoço com o uso de Tomografia Computadorizada de Feixe Cônico (TCFC) e os impactos na vida dos pacientes. O estudo foi realizado utilizando como método a revisão integrativa, iniciado com pergunta norteadora seguida de buscas nas bases de dados Pubmed, Scopus, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde e Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source por trabalhos de 2009 até o ano de 2019. Tornaram-se objeto deste trabalho quarenta e um artigos. Os achados incidentais mais relatados pelos artigos estão presentes nas regiões ósseas e de ATM, sendo encontrados 35 diferente AIs. No entanto, eles também são comuns em vias aéreas, como o espessamento de mucosa e cistos de retenção mucoso. Entre os dentários, os mais apontados são dentes impactados e supranumerários. Já no grupo das calcificações de tecidos moles, o tonsilólito e as calcificação do processo estilo-hióide são as mais frequentes. Ateromas e lesões malignas são achados com menor prevalência, mas importantes devido ao impacto na vida do paciente. Os principais achados incidentais são os ósseos/ATM, seguidos pelos dentários, as calcificações de tecidos moles, os das vias aéreas e outros achados. A maioria deles não afetam a vida do paciente. Porém, alguns AIs requerem intervenções imediatas e geralmente estão associadas a pacientes idosos. Por fim, mais da metade dos estudos apontaram que os achados incidentais estão localizados em região extragnática.

ZnO and doped ZnO films with non-ferromagnetic metal have been widely used as biosensor elements. In these studies, the electrochemical measurements are explored, though the electrical impedance of the system. In this sense, the ferromagnetic properties of the material can be used for multifunctionalization of the sensor element using external magnetic fields during the measurements. Within this context, we investigate the room-temperature ferromagnetism in pure ZnO and Ag-doped ZnO films presenting zigzag-like columnar geometry. Specifically, we focus on the films' structural and quasi-static magnetic properties and disclose that they evolve with the doping of low-Ag concentrations and the columnar geometry employed during the deposition. The magnetic characterization reveals ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature for all studied samples, including the pure ZnO one. By considering computational simulations, we address the origin of ferromagnetism in ZnO and Ag-doped ZnO and interpret our results in terms of the Zn vacancy dynamics, its substitution by an Ag atom in the site, and the influence of the columnar geometry on the magnetic properties of the films. Our findings bring to light an exciting way to induce/explore the room-temperature ferromagnetism of a non-ferromagnetic metal-doped semiconductor as a promising candidate for biosensor applications.

We investigated the magnetization dynamics through the magnetoimpedance effect in an integrated YIG/Pt-stripline system in the frequency range of 0.5 up to 2.0 GHz. Specifically, we explore the dependence of the dynamic magnetic behavior on the field orientation by analyzing beyond the traditional longitudinal magnetoimpedance effect of the transverse and perpendicular setups. We disclose here the strong dependence of the effective damping parameter on the field orientation, as well as verification of the very-low damping parameter values for the longitudinal and transverse configurations. We find considerable sensitivity results, bringing to light the facilities to integrate ferrimagnetic insulators in current and future technological applications.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to appraise the diagnostic performance of periapical (PR) and panoramic (PANO) radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting artificial circumferential gaps simulating osseointegration failure around dental implants in ex vivo studies. STUDY DESIGN: Seven electronic databases and three gray literature sources were searched. Studies reporting diagnostic performance measures or data allowing calculation of those measures compared with the reference standard of in situ direct measurements were considered eligible. Either the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve or accuracy was chosen to summarize findings, with diagnostic performance interpreted as poor, acceptable, excellent, or outstanding. Risk of bias (RoB) was also assessed. RESULTS: The ten included studies mostly suggested overall excellent to outstanding diagnostic capability with PR and CBCT. Various enhancement filters, CBCT voxel sizes, and/or fields of view were associated with acceptable to outstanding efficacy. PANO had the poorest results, with most research demonstrating acceptable to excellent discrimination. The RoB was high for seven studies, moderate for two, and low for -one. CONCLUSIONS: PR and CBCT images were generally superior to PANO for the detection of artificial bone gaps. Results should be interpreted with caution because most studies had a high RoB.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of substituting sweet potato flour for ground corn in rations fed to lactating dairy on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites, and feeding behavior. Twenty lactating Holstein cows from 30 to 60 days postpartum were randomly assigned to one of two groups (n = 10 each) and used in a cross-over design trial with two treatments: a standard concentrate with ground corn as an energy source or experimental concentrate with sweet potato flour (SPF) replacing all of the ground corn. Each of the 35-day periods consisted of 14 days for adaptation to diet and 21 days for data and sample collection. Milk yield, dry matter intake (DMI), and feeding behavior were evaluated daily throughout the trial. Milk samples were collected weekly and blood samples were collected every 3 days. Milk was analyzed for fat, protein, lactose, and total solid constituents. Blood was analyzed for glucose, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total protein (TP), albumin, and urea concentrations. Milk yield (P = 0.62) and composition (fat: P = 0.71; protein: P = 0.12; lactose: P = 0.82; total solids: P = 0.56) were not affected by dietary treatments. There were no differences between treatments in DMI or meal frequency, but total eating time (P = 0.001), feeding time (P = 0.001), and meal duration (P = 0.001) was higher for control compared with SPF. However, feeding rate (P = 0.001) and serum urea concentration (P = 0.001) were higher for SPF compared with control. No differences were observed in serum metabolites and enzymes measured among treatments. The results of this trial indicate that SPF can be substituted for ground corn without impairing the performance, feeding behavior, and metabolism in dairy cows.
