RESUMEN

Partition function zeros play a central role in the study of phase transitions. Recently, energy probability distribution (EPD) zeros were proposed as an alternative approach that solves some of the implementation issues present in the Fisher zeros method by allowing drastic reduction of the polynomial. Here, a formulation based on the EPD zeros that can reduce even more the polynomial degree while maintaining its accuracy is presented. This method has shown to be computationally cheaper than the EPD zeros, allowing the study of systems by using partition function zeros that would be unfeasible otherwise. In addition, the method can be easily extended to study phase transitions in external fields while maintaining all of its improvements.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The food environment can influence opportunities and barriers to food access. This study aimed to investigate whether access to healthy foods varies according to store types and the socioeconomic status of the users of the public health promotion program in Brazil, known as the Health Academy Program. METHODS: A total of 18 Health Academy Program centers were selected via simple conglomerate sampling. Health Academy Program users living up to 1 km from the food stores were evaluated (n = 2831). Their socioeconomic status was investigated via face-to-face interviews. The food stores were audited through direct observation. Variables included the community nutrition environment (type and location) and consumer nutrition environment (healthy food store index, involving variables such as availability, variety, and advertising of healthy and unhealthy products). Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to examine the association between access to healthy foods, socioeconomic status, and food store type. RESULTS: A total of 336 stores were investigated. The majority were specialty fruit and vegetable markets/stores or open-air food markets. Access to healthy food was only associated with the food store type. An increase of 1% in the availability of specialized fruits and vegetable markets or open-air food markets and supermarket raised healthy food store index values by 0.12 and 0.07, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Public food supply policies aimed at improving the diet quality of the population and reducing inequality in access should prioritize the implementation of stores of better quality, such as specialty fruit and vegetable markets and open-air food markets.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of antioxidant supplementation in diets of aging broiler breeder roosters on reproductive characteristics. Cobb roosters were divided into four groups, according to antioxidant addition, where: A = control group (without antioxidant supplementation); B = 9ppm of citranaxanthin; C = 6ppm of canthaxanthin, and D = 150ppm of vitamin E. Seminal characteristics (volume, force, motility and concentration), semen fatty acid composition (saturated, unsaturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, ω3, ω6 and ω9), and the correlation between testis weight with rooster weight were evaluated. No effects of the antioxidants tested were observed. The antioxidants do not influence the reproductive responses of aging male broiler breeder.(AU)

RESUMEN

In this work we have used extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling theory to study the phase transition in the dipolar planar rotator model (dPRM), also known as dipolar XY model. The true long-range character of the dipolar interactions was taken into account by using the Ewald summation technique. Our results for the critical exponents do not fit those from known universality classes. We observed that the specific heat is apparently non-divergent and the critical exponents are ν = 1.277(2), ß = 0.2065(4) and γ = 2.218(5). The critical temperature was found to be T(c) = 1.201(1). Our results are clearly distinct from those of a recent renormalization group study from Maier and Schwabl (2004 Phys. Rev. B 70 134430) and agrees with the results from a previous study of the anisotropic Heisenberg model with dipolar interactions in a bilayer system using a cut-off in the dipolar interactions (Mól and Costa 2009 Phys. Rev. B 79 054404).
