RESUMEN

The mechanical and physical properties of zirconium carbide (ZrC) are limited to its ability to deteriorate in oxidizing environments. Low refractory oxides are typically formed as layers on ZrC surfaces when exposed to the slightest concentrations of oxygen. However, this carbide has a wide range of applications in nuclear reactor lines and nozzle flaps in the aerospace industry, just to name a few. To develop mechanically strong and oxygen-resistant ZrC materials, the need for studying and characterizing the oxidized layers, with emphasis on the interfacial structure between ZrC and the oxidized phases, cannot be understated. In this paper, the ZrC(111)//c-ZrO2 (111) interface was studied by both finite temperature molecular dynamic simulation and DFT. The interfacial mechanical properties were characterized by the work of adhesion which revealed a Zr|OO|Zr|OO//ZrC(111) interface model as the most stable with an oxygen layer from ZrO2 being deposited on the ZrC(111) surface. Further structural analysis at the interface showed a crack in the first ZrO2 layer at the interfacial region. Investigations of the electronic structure using the density of state calculations and Bader charge analysis revealed the interfacial properties as local effects with no significant impacts in the bulk regions of the interface slab.

RESUMEN

ZrC is a non-oxide ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) material with excellent physical and mechanical properties used in nuclear plants and jet propulsion engines. However, the mechanical properties can be lost because of the easy oxidation of its grain surfaces. One way of dealing with such a problem is to coat the surface with inert carbides like SiC which can be grafted onto the ZrC surface by first modifying the exposed surfaces with reactive molecules. The stability of different terminations of the (111) facet was studied and the most stable is the termination on both surface layers by Zr atoms as it has been observed experimentally. A DFT calculation study jointly with atomistic thermodynamic modelling has been used to study the reactivity of the (111) and (110) facets with H2O. H2O dissociates into surface hydroxyl groups with the release of H2 and the OH groups preferentially adsorb at high surface coverage (high adsorption energies at 1 ML coverage). The study of adsorption of H2O onto other low index surfaces allows the determination of the equilibrium morphology of the ZrC nanocrystallites in different environments. In vacuum, ZrC nanocrystallites reveal a cubic structure with much of the (100) surface and a small amount of the (111) facets at the corners. Hydration of the (111) surface was a strong process and hence water can be removed from the surface at temperatures above 1200 K and pressures lower than 10(-9) bar while higher pressures of H2 in the gas phase enhance the removal of water. The Wulff construction of the nanocrystallites after hydration indicates only the (111) surface at lower temperatures while revealing the (100) facets at higher temperatures. Thus whatever the experimental conditions be, the (110) facet does not have to be considered.

RESUMEN

The extended Czjzek model (ECM) is applied to the distribution of NMR parameters of a simple glass model (sodium metaphosphate, NaPO3) obtained by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Accurate NMR tensors, electric field gradient (EFG) and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) are calculated from density functional theory (DFT) within the well-established PAW/GIPAW framework. The theoretical results are compared to experimental high-resolution solid-state NMR data and are used to validate the considered structural model. The distributions of the calculated coupling constant C(Q) is proportional to |V(zz)| and the asymmetry parameter η(Q) that characterize the quadrupolar interaction are discussed in terms of structural considerations with the help of a simple point charge model. Finally, the ECM analysis is shown to be relevant for studying the distribution of CSA tensor parameters and gives new insight into the structural characterization of disordered systems by solid-state NMR.

RESUMEN

We report here a complete structural characterization of a new lead Pb(4)(VO(2))(PO(4))(3) vanadophosphate compound by single crystal X-ray diffraction and (51)V and (31)P solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Although structural data are commonly used for the estimation of bond lengths and further delimitation of the true coordination number (e.g., octahedral: 6 versus 5 + 1 versus 4 + 2), we show here for the first time by solid-state NMR a more accurate appreciation of the V-O bonding scheme in this complex oxide which appears well adapted to the full series of vanado-phosphate materials. The direct characterization of V-O-P bridges through the J-mediated correlation (51)V{(31)P} heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (J-HMQC) technique allows a contrasted hierarchy of the V-O electronic delocalization and indirectly supports the presence or not of the V-O bond. In the reported lead vanado-phosphate structure, the two vanadium polyhedra that have been assigned to octahedra from a bond length point of view have been finally reclassified as tetra- and penta-coordinated units on the basis of the solid-state NMR results. More generally, we believe that the improved characterization of interatomic bonds in various vanado-phosphate structures by solid-state NMR will contribute to a better understanding of the structure/property relationships in this important class of materials.

RESUMEN

Periodic DFT calculations coupled to a first-principle thermodynamic approach have allowed us to establish a surface phase diagram for the different terminations of the α-Al(2)O(3) (1102) surface in various temperature and water pressure conditions. Theoretical results are compared with previous experimental data from the literature. Under a wide range of temperature and water pressure (including ambient conditions) the most stable surface (denoted C2_1H(2)O in this work) is terminated with singly coordinated hydroxyls on four-fold coordinated aluminium (Al(4C)-µ(1)-OH) while most existing surface models are only considering six-fold coordinated surface Al atoms as in the bulk structure of alumina. The presence of more acidic Al(4C)-µ(1)-OH sites helps explain the low Point of Zero Charge (PZC) (between 5 and 6) determined from the onset of Mo oxoanions adsorption on (1102) single crystal wafers. It is also postulated that another termination (corresponding to the hydration of the non-polar, stoichiometric surface, stable in dehydrated conditions) may be observed in aqueous solution depending on the surface preparation conditions.

RESUMEN

In this short review, we discuss the ability to reproduce NMR parameters in the case of phosphates materials through electronic structure calculation within density functional theory linear response. Indeed, the gauge-including projector-augmented wave is today largely used by the solid-state NMR community as a tool for structural determination and it has been applied to a large variety of materials. We emphasise on the crucial points that should be taken into account to perform such calculations. In particular, we discuss the influence of the electronic structure and of the geometry on the calculation of NMR parameters. To illustrate the review, we present experimental and theoretical comparison of (31)P, (1)H and (23)Na NMR data on a series of sodium phosphate systems.

RESUMEN

In the present study, we used a combination of (17)O NMR methods at a high magnetic field with first-principles calculations in order to characterize the oxygen sites in a series of hydroxylated sodium phosphate compounds, namely the hydrogen pyrophosphate Na(2)H(2)P(2)O(7) and the hydrogen orthophosphates NaH(2)PO(4), NaH(2)PO(4) x H(2)O and NaH(2)PO(4) x 2 H(2)O. The chemical shifts and quadrupolar parameters of these compounds were interpreted in terms of local and semi-local environment, i.e., the chemical composition of the immediate surroundings and the nature of the bonds, e.g. hydrogen bonding. The magnitude of the quadrupolar interaction and its asymmetry were revealed to be a precise indicator of the local structure in sodium hydrogen phosphates. Our (17)O NMR experimental and computing approach allowed for identification and quantification of the different crystalline phases involved in the weathering mechanism of a sodium phosphate glass, even in small amount.

RESUMEN

We present a comprehensive comparison of through-space heteronuclear correlation techniques for solid state NMR, combining indirect detection and single-channel recoupling method. These techniques, named D-HMQC and D-HSQC, do not suffer from dipolar truncation and can be employed to correlate quadrupolar nuclei with spin-1/2 nuclei. The heteronuclear dipolar couplings are restored under magic-angle spinning by applying supercycled symmetry-based pulse sequences (SR412) or simultaneous frequency and amplitude modulation (SFAM). The average Hamiltonian theory (AHT) of these recoupling methods is developed. These results are applied to analyze the performances of D-HMQC and D-HSQC sequences. It is shown that, whatever the magnitude of spin interations, D-HMQC experiment offers larger efficiency and higher robustness than D-HSQC. Furthermore, the spectral resolution in both dimensions of proton detected two-dimensional D-HMQC and D-HSQC spectra can be enhanced by applying recently introduced symmetry-based homonuclear dipolar decoupling schemes that cause a z-rotation of the spins. This is demonstrated by 1H-13C and 1H-23Na correlation experiments on l-histidine and NaH2PO4, respectively. The two-dimensional heteronuclear 1H-23Na correlation spectrum yields the assignment of 23Na resonances of NaH2PO4. This assignment is corroborated by first-principles calculations.

RESUMEN

The assignment of high-field (18.8 T) (17)O MAS and 3QMAS spectra has been completed by use of first-principles calculations for three crystalline sodium phosphates, Na 3P 3O 9, Na 5P 3O 10, and Na 4P 2O 7. In Na 3P 3O 9, the calculated parameters, quadrupolar constant ( C Q), quadrupolar asymmetry (eta Q), and the isotropic chemical shift (delta cs) correspond to those deduced experimentally, and the calculation is mandatory to achieve a complete assignment. For the sodium tripolyphosphate Na 5P 3O 10, the situation is more complex because of the free rotation of the end-chain phosphate groups. The assignment obtained with ab initio calculations can however be confirmed by the (17)O{ (31)P} MAS-J-HMQC spectrum. Na 4P 2O 7 (17)O MAS and 3QMAS spectra show a complex pattern in agreement with the computed NMR parameters, which indicate that all of the oxygens exhibit very similar values. These results are related to structural data to better understand the influence of the oxygen environment on the NMR parameters. The findings are used to interpret those results observed on a binary sodium phosphate glass.

RESUMEN

We investigate the processes of cluster formation and growth of ZnS from aqueous solution using molecular dynamics simulation techniques. The influence of both temperature and concentration is studied. We show that, at lower temperatures, the crucial process is the transformation of an outer-sphere Zn/S complex to an inner-sphere ion pair. Further growth of the latter is fast to generate negatively charged planar clusters. These clusters interact to form more stable, closed structures, which are found to be the global minima configurations in vacuo. At higher temperatures, no outer-sphere ion pairs are formed, and the larger cluster configurations form much more quickly.

RESUMEN

Hydrogen adsorption on Mo[bond]S, Co[bond]Mo[bond]S, and Ni[bond]Mo[bond]S (10 1 macro 0) surfaces has been modeled by means of periodic DFT calculations taking into account the gaseous surrounding of these catalysts in working conditions. On the stable Mo[bond]S surface, only six-fold coordinated Mo cations are present, whereas substitution by Co or Ni leads to the creation of stable coordinatively unsaturated sites. On the stable MoS(2) surface, hydrogen dissociation is always endothermic and presents a high activation barrier. On Co[bond]Mo[bond]S surfaces, the ability to dissociate H(2) depends on the nature of the metal atom and the sulfur coordination environment. As an adsorption center, Co strongly favors molecular hydrogen activation as compared to the Mo atoms. Co also increases the ability of its sulfur atom ligands to bind hydrogen. Investigation of surface acidity using ammonia as a probe molecule confirms the crucial role of sulfur basicity on hydrogen activation on these surfaces. As a result, Co[bond]Mo[bond]S surfaces present Co[bond]S sites for which the dissociation of hydrogen is exothermic and weakly activated. On Ni[bond]Mo[bond]S surfaces, Ni[bond]S pairs are not stable and do not provide for an efficient way for hydrogen activation. These theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experimental studies of H(2)[bond]D(2) exchange reactions.
