RESUMEN

Cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD), which commonly includes left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure, is the main adverse effect of anticancer therapy. In recent years several candidate genes studies and genome-wide association studies have identified common genetic variants associated with CTRCD, but evidence remains limited and few genetic variants are robust. A genome-wide meta-analysis of CTRCD was performed with 852 oncology patients receiving cancer therapy. DNA samples were genotyped and imputed to perform a GWAS meta-analysis for case-control (N = 852 (380 cases and 472 controls) and extreme phenotypes (N = 618 (78 cases and 472 controls) looking for genetic variants that predispose to CTRCD. The results were validated in a replicate cohort of 1,191 oncology patients (245 cases and 946 controls). Functional mapping of the replicated loci was then performed. The meta-analysis showed 9 and 17 loci suggestively associated (P-value < 1 × 10-5) with CTRCD in case-control and extreme phenotypes analyses, respectively. The 3q28 locus (rs rs7652759, P = 5.64 × 10-6) in the case-control analysis was the strongest signal, with up to 64 SNPs above the suggestive significance threshold. The rs7652759, an intergenic variant between TPRG1 and TP63 genes, was the only variant validated in the replication cohort (P-value = 0.01). Functional mapping of this significant locus revealed up to 5 new genes potentially involved in the CTRCD. We identified the intergenic region near TP63 as a novel CTRCD susceptibility locus. In the future, the genotyping of these markers could be considered in new CTRCD risk scores to improve preventive strategies in cardio-oncology.

Given the extensive use of fluorination in molecular design, it is imperative to understand the solvation properties of fluorinated compounds and the impact of the C-F bond on electrostatic interactions. Vibrational spectroscopy can provide direct insights into these interactions by using the C-F bond stretching [v(C-F)] as an electric field probe through the vibrational Stark effect (VSE). In this work, we explore the VSE of the three basic patterns of aliphatic fluorination, i.e., mono-, di-, and trifluorination in CF, CF2, and CF3 groups, respectively, and compare their response to the well-studied aromatic v(C-F). Magnitudes (i.e., Stark tuning rates) and orientations of the difference dipole vectors of the v(C-F)-containing normal modes were determined using density functional theory and a molecular dynamics (MD)-assisted solvatochromic analysis of model compounds in solvents of varying polarity. We obtain Stark tuning rates of 0.2-0.8 cm-1/(MV/cm), with smallest and largest electric field sensitivities for CFaliphatic and CF3,aliphatic, respectively. While average electric fields of solvation were oriented along the main symmetry axis of the CFn, and thus along its static dipole, the Stark tuning rate vectors were tilted by up to 87° potentially enabling to map electrostatics in multiple dimensions. We discuss the influence of conformational heterogeneity on spectral shifts and point out the importance of multipolar and/or polarizable MD force fields to describe the electrostatics of fluorinated molecules. The implications of this work are of direct relevance for studies of fluorinated molecules as found in pharmaceuticals, fluorinated peptides, and proteins.

The objective of this study was to assess (1) the effects of prepartum administration of anti-inflammatory therapies on type 1/type 2 immunity ratio using a rapid blood test (D2Dx immunity test; Nano Discovery Inc.), and (2) correlations between rapid blood test scores and daily milk yield in Holstein dairy cows. At 14 d before the expected calving date, cows (n = 64) and heifers (n = 23) were blocked by body condition score (optimal = 3.25-3.5; high ≥3.75) and parity (nulliparous, parous), and randomly allocated to one of 3 treatment groups (1) ASA (n = 29) = receive one oral treatment with administration of acetylsalicylic acid (4 boluses; 480 grain/bolus); (2) MEL (n = 31) = receive one oral administration with meloxicam (1 mg/kg of body weight), or (3) PLC (n = 27) = receive one oral treatment with 4 gelatin capsules filled with water. Blood samples were collected weekly starting 1 wk before treatment until 3 wk after calving for assessment of type 1/type 2 immunity ratio using a rapid blood test (i.e., D2Dx immunity test). A higher D2Dx score corresponds to a higher type 1/type 2 ratio. Furthermore, blood samples were collected within 72 h before and after calving by farm personnel. Daily milk yield for the first 60 d in milk (DIM) was collected from on-farm computer records. The data were analyzed using MIXED procedure of SAS (SAS Institute Inc.) as a randomized complete block design. On average enrolled cows received treatment administration 10 d before the actual calving date (standard deviation = 5.10 d). There was a tendency for a treatment by day interaction. Cows treated with ASA had higher type 1/type 2 ratio within 3 d after calving compared with MEL and PLC cows (ASA = 0.065 ± 0.002; MEL = 0.059 ± 0.002; PLC = 0.053 ± 0.002). Similarly, ASA and MEL cows had a higher type 1/type 2 ratio at 7 ± 3 DIM compared with PLC cows (ASA = 0.062 ± 0.002; MEL = 0.064 ± 0.002; PLC = 0.056 ± 0.002). Regardless of treatment, there was an interaction between parity and day. Parous cows had higher type 1/type 2 ratios compared with nulliparous cows at 14 ± 3 d before calving and at 7 ± 3, 14 ± 3, and 21 ± 3 d after calving. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between D2Dx scores at 14 ± 3 DIM and average daily milk yield in the first 60 DIM. These results suggest that prepartum anti-inflammatory therapies may cause an increased shift in type 1 immunity around calving. Similarly, parous cows may have an increased shift in type 1 immunity after calving. Interestingly, higher type 1/type 2 ratios may be associated with higher milk yields in the first 60 DIM. Larger studies are needed to identify associations between the D2Dx immunity test and cow health and performance, as well as to assess the applicability of these types of tests in a conventional farm setting.

Citrus bergamia is a citric species known as bergamot. The species is widely used due to its derivatives, such as juices, extracts, and essential oil. Specifically, the bergamot essential oil (BEO) is of great interest, with a chemical composition rich in terpenes and esters. Considering its chemical composition, bioactivity, and great economic potential, the characterization of BEO should be studied. However, this essential oil is almost unexplored in terms of a characterization associated with colloids. Chemical characterization was carried out by gas-chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer and by gas-chromatography coupled to a flame ionization detector. Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was carried out to confirm the bioactivity of this important essential oil. Dynamic light scattering analysis was performed to create a pattern of droplet size distribution of BEO. Major compounds of BEO were linalyl acetate, limonene, and linalool. The BEO was active against E. coli and presented a MIC value of 2.000 µg/mL, while values of MIC and MBC higher than 2.000 µg/mL were observed for S. aureus. The dynamic light scattering analysis revealed a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 65.7 ± 2.2 nm. After a 1:10 dilution it was observed reduction of mean diameter and enhancement of the percentagem of low size droplets, resepctively 44.1 ± 1.2 nm and 14.5 ± 0.5 nm (28.8 ± 1.2%). Higher droplets and reduced polydispersity index were observed after 1:100 dilution. In the present study, the chemical characterization was in accordance with the species, as the characteristic chemical markers of the species were found. Moreover, it has presented antibacterial activity as expected for the BEO. The analysis of the colloid showed a pattern of droplet size distribution following the Ostwald ripening mechanism after dilution.

RESUMEN

Surface electromyography (sEMG) can be used to measure the electrical activity of the respiratory muscles. The possible applications of sEMG span from patients suffering from acute respiratory failure to patients receiving chronic home mechanical ventilation, to evaluate muscle function, titrate ventilatory support and guide treatment. However, sEMG is mainly used as a monitoring tool for research and its use in clinical practice is still limited-in part due to a lack of standardization and transparent reporting. During this round table meeting, recommendations on data acquisition, processing, interpretation, and potential clinical applications of respiratory sEMG were discussed. This paper informs the clinical researcher interested in respiratory muscle monitoring about the current state of the art on sEMG, knowledge gaps and potential future applications for patients with respiratory failure.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between macronutrient intake and bone mineral density (BMD) using non-substitution and substitution statistical approaches. DESIGN: Longitudinal analysis. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: 1,317 adults in the Health Worker Cohort Study in Mexico. MEASUREMENTS: These participants were assessed at baseline (2004-2006) and follow-up (2010-2012). Dietary intakes were assessed using validated food frequency questionnaires. BMD at the different sites was performed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Hybrid-mixed effects regression models were performed to evaluate the associations of interest. RESULTS: Cross-sectional associations were found between fiber intake and higher total hip and femoral neck BMD in women and longitudinal associations with loss of femoral neck BMD in men. An increase in 5% energy intake from carbohydrate was associated with a BMD loss at several site in women and total hip and femoral neck in men. In both sexes, an increase in 5% energy intake of animal protein or fat was associated with a site-specific BMD gain after six years. Substitution analysis showed that the energy intake replacement from fat or carbohydrate by protein had an increase in BMD at different sites in women; while in men, it was only significant when replacing carbohydrate. Substitution of protein or fat by carbohydrates was associated with lower BMD in women, and only protein replacement by carbohydrates in men. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that carbohydrate intake was associated with loss of BMD, while animal protein and fat intake was associated with gain of BMD among the Mexican population. Macronutrient substitutions resulted in significant associations; however, additional studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Objetivos. El tabaquismo es el principal factor de riesgo en salud pública y una de las causas que ocasionan una mayor carga económica para la sociedad. El objetivo de nuestro estudio es aumentar el nivel de salud de los trabajadores del Hospital de segundo nivel, disminuyendo el consumo de tabaco y, por tanto, sus consecuencias, pero también, disminuir la prevalencia del hábito tabáquico entre los trabajadores del Hospital de Huelva y reducir las circunstancias de especial riesgo, personal y a terceros, como consecuencia del consumo de tabaco. Material y métodos. Se incluyeron en nuestro estudio a todo trabajador fumador, del Área Hospitalaria, motivado para la deshabituación tabáquica y a convivientes con algún trabajador que, a petición de este, desee abandonar el hábito, puesto que esta medida a prestar necesita apoyo familiar. El periodo de estudio abarcó desde enero a diciembre de 2021. Resultados. El número de pacientes fue de 136. Al año de tratamiento se observó una tasa de abandono del tabaco del 56% de los trabajadores que lo iniciaron. La población de pacientes estudiados presentó una edad media de 41 años; el rango abarca desde los 23 a los 63 años. La distribución según sexo fue: 83 mujeres (69% de los casos) y 37 hombres (31%). En cuanto al consumo diario su media fue de 24 cigarrillos/día y la media de comienzo del hábito tabáquico se sitúa en los 17 años. El 73% de los casos han intentado sin éxito dejar el hábito tabáquico al menos una vez. Con respecto a la categoría son los DUE los que fuman con más frecuencia con el 21% de los casos, seguidos de los auxiliares (19,8%), celadores (9,9%) y médicos (4,9%). La marca de cigarrillos más usada es LM (23,5%), Ducados (19,8%), Marlboro (7,4%), etc. El 85% de los fumadores toman café. En el 53% de los casos no fuman en su casa. Conclusiones. Objetives.Smoking is the most important risk fac-tor for public health and one of the factors with thegreatest economic repercussions for society. Increasethe level of health of second level Hospital workers byreducing tobacco consumption and, therefore, its con-sequences. But also, reduce the prevalence of smokingamong workers at the Huelva ́s Hospital and reducecircumstances of special risk, both personally and tothird parties, as a consequence of tobacco consump-tion.Material and methods.We included in our studysmokers’ workers of area, motivated to lose the smok-ing habit and family living with workers, who at therequest of them want to leave the habit. Study periodwas collected from the 1st of January 2021 to 31st ofDecember 2021.Results.All cases were 136. Alter one year of treat-ment, 56% of the workers who had started the pro-gramme had dropped out. Average age populationwas 41 years old; rank include from 23 to 63 yearsold. Distribution by sex were: 83 women (69% ofcases) and 37 men (31%). Cigarettes average numberwas 24 cigarettes/day and beginning average was 17years old. 73% of cases have to intend to leave smok-ing habit once at least. In relation with the profes-sional categories, staff nurse are most smokers (21%of cases), followed by health auxiliary staff (19,8%),hospital porter staff (9,9%) and doctors’ staff (4,9%).Brand cigarettes more usual were L.M (23,5%), Duca-dos (19,8%), Marlboro (7,4%)... Otherwise, 85% ofsmokers usually drink coffee and 53% of cases don ́tsmoke in home.Conclusions.We find in our study a higher casespercent no smoking workers after one year beginningcomprehensive treatment. We conclude with this de-scriptive study we think necessary to developmentinterventions and coordinated programs with ex-tra-hospital care, and increase the activity to lose thehabit all rest of workers of our area (Hospital Area). Despite the high contagion and mortality rates that have accompanied the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, the clinical presentation of the syndrome varies greatly from one individual to another. Potential host factors that accompany greater risk from COVID-19 have been sought and schizophrenia (SCZ) patients seem to present more severe COVID-19 than control counterparts, with certain gene expression similarities between psychiatric and COVID-19 patients reported. We used summary statistics from the last SCZ, bipolar disorder (BD), and depression (DEP) meta-analyses available on the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium webpage to calculate polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for a target sample of 11,977 COVID-19 cases and 5943 subjects with unknown COVID-19 status. Linkage disequilibrium score (LDSC) regression analysis was performed when positive associations were obtained from the PRS analysis. The SCZ PRS was a significant predictor in the case/control, symptomatic/asymptomatic, and hospitalization/no hospitalization analyses in the total and female samples; and of symptomatic/asymptomatic status in men. No significant associations were found for the BD or DEP PRS or in the LDSC regression analysis. SNP-based genetic risk for SCZ, but not for BD or DEP, may be associated with higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 severity, especially among women; however, predictive accuracy barely exceeded chance level. We believe that the inclusion of sexual loci and rare variations in the analysis of genomic overlap between SCZ and COVID-19 will help to elucidate the genetic commonalities between these conditions.

BACKGROUND: The study of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) genomics has primarily been tackled by Genome-wide association studies (GWAS), which have encountered troubles in identifying replicable single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Endophenotypes have emerged as a promising avenue of study in trying to elucidate the genomic bases of complex traits such as OCD. METHODS: We analyzed the association of SNPs across the whole genome with the construction of visuospatial information and executive performance through four neurocognitive variables assessed by the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT) in a sample of 133 OCD probands. Analyses were performed at SNP- and gene-level. RESULTS: No SNP reached genome-wide significance, although there was one SNP almost reaching significant association with copy organization (rs60360940; P = 9.98E-08). Suggestive signals were found for the four variables at both SNP- (P < 1E-05) and gene-levels (P < 1E-04). Most of the suggestive signals pointed to genes and genomic regions previously associated with neurological function and neuropsychological traits. LIMITATIONS: Our main limitations were the sample size, which was limited to identify associated signals at a genome-wide level, and the composition of the sample, more representative of rather severe OCD cases than a population-based OCD sample with a broad severity spectrum. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that studying neurocognitive variables in GWAS would be more informative on the genetic basis of OCD than the classical case/control GWAS, facilitating the genetic characterization of OCD and its different clinical profiles, the development of individualized treatment approaches, and the improvement of prognosis and treatment response.

PURPOSE: Vitamin D (VD) deficiency and osteoporosis have become a global public health problem. A variant in the Histidine Ammonia-Lyase (HAL) gene has been associated with VD levels and bone mineral density (BMD). However, whether this variant has an influence on VD levels and BMD in Mexican adults remain unclear. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included 1,905 adults participating in the Health Worker Cohort Study and 164 indigenous postmenopausal women from the Metabolic Analysis in an Indigenous Sample (MAIS) cohort. The rs3819817 variant was genotyped by TaqMan probe assay. Total 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels were measured by DiaSorin Liaison. BMD at the different sites was assessed through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear and logistic regression models were performed to evaluate the associations of interest. RESULTS: The prevalence of VD deficiency was 41%, showing differences between sexes. Obesity and skin pigmentation were associated with lower levels of VD in males and females. rs3819817-T allele was associated with low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, VD deficiency, and hip and femoral neck BMD values (g/cm2). We found two interactions with VD levels, one between adiposity and rs3819817-T allele (P = 0.017) and another between skin pigmentation and rs3819817-T allele (P = 0.019). In indigenous postmenopausal women, we observed higher VD levels in the southern region compared to the northern region (P < 0.001); however, we did not observe differences by genotype. CONCLUSION: Our findings confirm that the genetic variant rs3819817 has an essential function in VD levels and BMD and suggests a role in skin pigmentation in the Mexican population.

Introducción: el embarazo adolescente hace referencia a toda gestación que ocurre durante la adolescencia y comprende las mujeres de hasta 19 años. Irrumpe la vida de las adolescentes en momentos que no alcanzan la madurez física ni mental, con carencias nutricionales y enfermedades. Las causas son amplias y complejas, variando entre distintos grupos culturales y étnicos. Para los investigadores es importante conocer la forma de pensar de las jóvenes y madres respecto a embarazos en adolescentes, como construyen los sentidos y significaciones alrededor de embarazos a temprana edad, qué factores intervienen, de qué modo se puede educar a la población joven y adulta ante esta problemática que irrumpe con su proyecto de vida. Material y métodos: enfoque metodológico cualitativo descriptivo, con visión holística histórico-etnográfico, dado que se pretende conocer la manera de pensar de las adolescentes del estado de Guerrero en la región montaña alta ante un embarazo y las posibles causas de la misma. Resultados: el binomio revela que la falta de recursos económicos, educación, costumbres y tradiciones son las principales causas de un embarazo precoz y deserción escolar en la montaña Alta de Guerrero. Consideraciones finales: desde el término EMIC se manifiesta desacuerdo por el embarazo adolescente, se visualiza la incapacidad de las participantes para desarrollar el rol de crianza y educación, se refleja con ETIC la inmadurez física y psicológica de las adolescentes para adquirir la responsabilidad de una mujer adulta, el proyecto de vida se ve estancado en el mismo padrón de los padres.


Introduction: adolescent pregnancy refers to any gestation that occurs during adolescence and includes women up to 19 years of age. It bursts into the lives of adolescents at times when they do not reach physical or mental maturity, with nutritional deficiencies and illnesses. The causes are broad and complex, varying among different cultural and ethnic groups. For researchers, it is important to know the way of thinking of young women and mothers regarding teenage pregnancies, how they build meanings and meanings around early pregnancies, what factors intervene, how the young and adult population can be educated before this problem that bursts with his life project. Material and methods: the present investigation has a descriptive qualitative methodological approach, with a holistic historical-ethnographic vision, since it is intended to know the way of thinking of adolescents from the state of Guerrero in the high mountain region before a pregnancy and the possible causes of it. Results: the binomial reveals that the lack of economic resources, education, customs and traditions are the main causes of early pregnancy and school dropout in the High Mountain of Guerrero. Final considerations: the term EMIC shows disagreement with adolescent pregnancy, the inability of the participants to develop the role of upbringing and education, the physical and psychological immaturity of the adolescents to acquire the responsibility of an adult woman is reflected in ETIC, the life project is stagnated in the same pattern of the parents.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) represent a spectrum of clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders. Our study describes an IRD patient carrying ABCA4 and USH2A pathogenic biallelic mutations as a result of paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) in chromosome 1. The proband is a 9-year-old girl born from non-consanguineous parents. Both parents were asymptomatic and denied family history of ocular disease. Clinical history and ophthalmologic examination of the proband were consistent with Stargardt disease. Whispered voice testing disclosed moderate hearing loss. Next-generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing identified pathogenic variants in ABCA4 (c.4926C>G and c.5044_5058del) and USH2A (c.2276G>T). All variants were present homozygously in DNA from the proband and heterozygously in DNA from the father. No variants were found in maternal DNA. Further analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms confirmed paternal UPD of chromosome 1. This is the first known patient with confirmed UPD for two recessively mutated IRD genes. Our study expands on the genetic heterogeneity of IRDs and highlights the importance of UPD as a mechanism of autosomal recessive disease in non-consanguineous parents. Moreover, a long-term follow-up is essential for the identification of retinal features that may develop as a result of USH2A-related conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) is a nuclear transcription factor with a role in gene expression changes associated to lipid metabolism. PPARα polymorphic variants have been previously correlated to serum lipid profile but in Mexico, there is no previous report about that association. For this reason, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PPARα polymorphic variants and lipids level in serum in a Mexican population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two-hundred and forty women from the Northeast region of Mexico were included in the study. Anthropometric characteristics and serum lipid profile (such as triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol) were evaluated. Genomic DNA extraction and purification were made from blood samples. Real-time PCR and TaqMan probes were used for genotyping of rs1800206 and rs4253778 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). RESULTS: Linear regression analysis (adjusted by age and body mass index (BMI)) showed a significant statistical association of rs4253778 with total cholesterol (p=0.034) and LDL cholesterol (p=0.037). Any significant association was found between rs1800206 and lipid levels. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that rs4253778 (C allele) is associated with high levels of total cholesterol and LDL in a Mexican women population.

Heat stress is a great challenge for feedlot operations established in arid zones. The aim of this study was to evaluate if increasing shade area in the pen improved physiological and productive variables in feedlot heifers under hot climate. A total of 510 European and Zebu heifers were randomly assigned to six pens which were divided in two treatments: (1) three pens with 100 heifers each with a shade area of 2.7 m2/head (control group [C]); and (2) three pens with 70 heifers each with a shade area of 3.7 m2/head (treated group [T]). Physiological variables respiratory frequency (RF) and body surface temperature (BST) of several anatomic regions were taken from 30 heifers per treatment (i.e., 10 heifers/pen). Feed intake on pen basis was recorded weekly and heifers were individually weighted on days 1, 26, and 66 of the study to calculate performance variables. Relative humidity (RH) and ambient temperature (AT) were recorded and used to estimate the temperature-humidity index (THI). Data was analyzed with analysis of variance. The average THI during the study was 81.7 units, which was categorized as dangerous heat stress. In both shaded areas, European heifers showed higher (P < 0.05) RF than Zebu heifers. In the afternoon, the temperature of head, neck, loin, paddle, and belly was higher (P < 0.05) in C compared with T. Heifers under T showed better (P < 0.05) daily weight gain (DWG), total weight gain (TWG), feed conversion (FC), and feed efficiency (FE) than heifers in C, with no effect on dry matter intake (DMI). Results indicate that during hot summer months, Zebu showed more tolerance to heat stress than European heifers; however, heifers under a shade area of 3.7 m2/head had better productive performance than those under a shade area of 2.7 m2/head during the finishing phase of the feedlot. Increasing the shade area in the finishing phase of beef cattle on feedlot improved some physiological and productive responses during heat stress.

We examined whether endurance performance and neuromuscular fatigue would be affected by caffeine ingestion during closed- and open-loop exercises. Nine cyclists performed a closed-loop (4,000-m cycling time trial) and an open-loop exercise (work rate fixed at mean power of the closed-loop trial) 60 min after ingesting caffeine (CAF, 5 mg/kg) or placebo (PLA, cellulose). Central and peripheral fatigue was quantified via pre- to post-exercise decrease in quadriceps voluntary activation and potentiated twitch force, respectively. Test sensitivity for detecting caffeine-induced improvements in exercise performance was calculated as the mean change in time divided by the error of measurement. Caffeine ingestion reduced the time of the closed-loop trial (PLA: 375.1±14.5 s vs CAF: 368.2±14.9 s, P=0.024) and increased exercise tolerance during the open-loop trial (PLA: 418.2±99.5 s vs CAF: 552.5±106.5 s, P=0.001), with similar calculated sensitivity indices (1.5, 90%CI: 0.7-2.9 vs 2.8, 90%CI: 1.9-5.1). The reduction in voluntary activation was more pronounced (P=0.019) in open- (-6.8±8.3%) than in closed-loop exercises (-1.9±4.4%), but there was no difference between open- and closed-loop exercises for the potentiated twitch force reduction (-25.6±12.8 vs -26.6±12.0%, P>0.05). Caffeine had no effect on central and peripheral fatigue development in either mode of exercise. In conclusion, caffeine improved endurance performance in both modes of exercise without influence on post-exercise central and peripheral fatigue, with the open-loop exercise imposing a greater challenge to central fatigue tolerance.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to test if creep feeding (CF) improves the average daily gain (ADG) and weaning weight of calves submitted to temporary weaning (TW) and if the combination of CF and TW improves conception and pregnancy rates of cows. METHODS: Primiparous (n = 74) and primiparous and multiparous (n = 104) cows grazing native grasslands were used in experiment 1 and 2; respectively. The experimental design was in plots divided into complete random blocks with two replications. The CF was the big plot and TW the small plot, thus four experimental groups were formed: i) -CF-TW (n = 21 and 27); ii) -CF+TW (n = 16 and 24); iii) +CF-TW (n = 20 and 26); iv) +CF+TW (n = 17 and 27) with cow-calf pairs for experiments 1 and 2; respectively. Nose plate application for TW had a duration of 14 and 15 days for experiment 1 and 2: respectively. In experiment 1, calves were fed at 1% of live weight for 112 days using a commercial supplement with 18.4% crude protein. In experiment 2, the supplementation lasted 98 days, and was carried out with corn dried distillers grains with soluble (DDGS) at 40% of the potential intake on a daily basis. RESULTS: The TW reduced ADG during the TW period and the following 14 days, but the negative effect of TW was maintained until the final weaning only in experiment 2. The CF increased ADG during TW period in both experiments. The TW promoted an earlier conception of the dams (12 days in -CF treatment and 19 days in +CF treatment, p<0.01) and CF increased pregnancy rate in experiment 1, being the effects not consistent between experiments. CONCLUSION: The CF consistently promoted an increase in ADG during the period of TW and increased final weaning weight of calves, therefore it is economically viable.

Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) represent an insect pest in horticulture. It serves as a vector for transmitting phytopathogens that inhibit the correct development of plants, affecting crop performance. In this research, whitefly population model was proposed to provide a tool that predicts the pest spread within a crop under greenhouse conditions. The analysis, calibration, and validation of the models, based on logistic functions, were implemented for the three stages (egg, nymph, and adult) of the life cycle of this organism. Temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), initial population (number/cm2), and Growing Degree-Day (GDD) were considered as input variables to describe each development stage. The statistical analysis for the model validation included the coefficient of determination (R2), the percentage standard error of prediction (%SEP), the average relative variance (AVR), and the efficiency coefficient (E). The first period for calibration consisted of 43 d (204.3 GDD), and the second period for validation consisted of 36 d (171.1 GDD). The model efficiently predicts the population growth for the egg, nymph, and adult stages since the values of R2 were 0.9856, 0.9918, and 0.9436, and the values of %SEP were 12.4, 11.9, and 75.1% for the egg, nymph, and adult stages, respectively. Moreover, the validation model obtained an R2 of 0.9287 for the egg stage, 0.9645 for the nymph stage, and 0.9884 for the adult stage. Meanwhile, the values of %SEP were 10.38, 16.89, and 32.59% for the egg, nymph, and adult stages, respectively. In both cases, the values suggest an adequate fit for the model.
