RESUMEN

Futsal promotes stress by handling the ball, physical contact, and exhaustive muscle contractions, elevating the risks for injury, oxidative stress, and inflammation after a training session or a match. In this review, we critically evaluate the more recent advances in the performance and health of futsal players. We searched the effects of futsal on performance, physiological parameters, muscle injury, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Although the stressful factors apply to all futsal players, goalkeepers require special attention during the competition and the recovery phase. We also show that the FIFA injury prevention programme, called The 11+, is effective in improving athletic performance and avoiding injury in futsal players. Research with different training durations and intensities and a wider range of studies involving oxidative stress, inflammation, and physiological mechanisms are of interest to design a more precise map of the biochemical regulation of training load and competition season in futsal.

We propose herein a mathematical model to predict the COVID-19 evolution and evaluate the impact of governmental decisions on this evolution, attempting to explain the long duration of the pandemic in the 26 Brazilian states and their capitals well as in the Federative Unit. The prediction was performed based on the growth rate of new cases in a stable period, and the graphics plotted with the significant governmental decisions to evaluate the impact on the epidemic curve in each Brazilian state and city. Analysis of the predicted new cases was correlated with the total number of hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID-19. Because Brazil is a vast country, with high heterogeneity and complexity of the regional/local characteristics and governmental authorities among Brazilian states and cities, we individually predicted the epidemic curve based on a specific stable period with reduced or minimal interference on the growth rate of new cases. We found good accuracy, mainly in a short period (weeks). The most critical governmental decisions had a significant temporal impact on pandemic curve growth. A good relationship was found between the predicted number of new cases and the total number of inpatients and deaths related to COVID-19. In summary, we demonstrated that interventional and preventive measures directly and significantly impact the COVID-19 pandemic using a simple mathematical model. This model can easily be applied, helping, and directing health and governmental authorities to make further decisions to combat the pandemic.

Daily food intake is crucial to maintain health and determine endogenous fuel to practice endurance exercise. We investigated the association between quantity of macronutrient and micronutrient daily intake and inflammation induced by long-distance exercise. Methods. Forty-four Brazilian male amateurs' marathon finishers from 30 to 55 years old participated in this study. Blood samples were collected 1 day before, immediately after, and 1 day and 3 days after São Paulo International Marathon. The serum levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, IL-10, IL-8, IL-12p70, and TNF-α were measured to evaluate inflammation. Dietary intake was determined using a prospective method of three food records in the week before marathon race. Results. Marathon race promoted an elevation on IL-6, IL-8, IL-1-ß, and IL-10 immediately after the race. The energy intake (EI), carbohydrate, fiber, folic acid, vitamin E, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and potassium intakes was below recommended. Immediately after the marathon race, we observed a negative correlation between IL-8 and daily EI, carbohydrate, fiber, fat, iron, calcium, potassium, and sodium intakes, and higher levels of IL-8 on runners with <3 g/kg/day of carbohydrate intake compared to runners with >5 g/kg/day. We demonstrated a positive correlation between daily carbohydrate intake and IL-10 and a negative correlation between TNF-α and % of energy intake recommended, carbohydrate and fiber intakes. Finally, runners with adequate EI had lower levels of IL-1ß and TNF-α compared with low EI immediately after the race. Conclusion. Nutrition strategies to promote balanced diet in amateur runners seem to be as important as immunonutrition sports market. Daily food intake, mainly EI, electrolyte and carbohydrate intakes, may modulate exacerbated inflammation after endurance exercise.

Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) have been an integral component of parenteral nutrition for more than 50 years. Numerous formulations are available and are based on vegetable (soybean, olive, coconut) and animal (fish) oils. Therefore, each of these formulations has a unique fatty acid composition that offers both benefits and limitations. As clinical experience and our understanding of the effects of fatty acids on various physiological processes has grown, there is evidence to suggest that some ILEs may have benefits compared with others. Current evidence suggests that olive oil-based ILE may preserve immune, hepatobiliary, and endothelial cell function, and may reduce lipid peroxidation and plasma lipid levels. There is good evidence from a large randomized controlled study to support a benefit of olive oil-based ILE over soybean oil-based ILE on reducing infections in critically ill patients. At present there is limited evidence to demonstrate a benefit of olive oil-based ILE over other ILEs on glucose metabolism, and few data exist to demonstrate a benefit on clinical outcomes such as hospital or intensive care unit stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, or mortality. We review the current research and clinical evidence supporting the potential positive biological and clinical aspects of olive oil-based ILE and conclude that olive oil-based ILE is well tolerated and provides effective nutritional support to various PN-requiring patient populations. Olive oil-based ILE appears to support the innate immune system, is associated with fewer infections, induces less lipid peroxidation, and is not associated with increased hepatobiliary or lipid disturbances. These data would suggest that olive oil-based ILE is a valuable option in various PN-requiring patient populations.

In this study, the lymphocyte activation status (surface expression of CD95, CD28, CD25, and CTLA-4), lymphocyte number, lymphocyte subpopulations, lymphocyte necrosis and/or apoptosis, and lymphocyte release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were investigated in blood samples from 16 futsal athletes before and immediately following a competitive match. Lymphocytes were isolated from the blood samples, and the cellular parameters were assessed by flow cytometry. The futsal match induced lymphocytosis and lymphocyte apoptosis, as indicated by phosphatidylserine externalization, CD95 expression, and DNA fragmentation. Additionally, the competitive match induced the necrotic death of lymphocytes. No differences in the percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells or in the T-helper/suppressor profile between before and immediately after the match were observed. Additionally, after the futsal match, the CD95 and CD28 expression levels were decreased, and the lymphocytes spontaneously released higher levels of ROS. Regardless of the origin, the situation-specific knowledge of lymphocyte behavior obtained herein may facilitate the design of strategies to control the processes that result in infection and tissue injury and that subsequently decrease athletic performance.

A futsal player's performance depends on his technical and tactical skills but may be improved by a less harmful inflammatory profile that is better adjusted to his tactical position in the game. Thus, the purpose of this study was to characterize muscle lesion and inflammation in futsal players according to their positions in an official match. The participants in this study were 5 goalkeepers (23 ± 1.2 years old, body mass = 74 ± 2.5 kg, height = 178 ± 3.2 cm, body fat = 13 ± 2%, VO2max = 40 ± 2 ml·kg(-1)), 8 defenders (21 ± 1 years, body mass = 69 ± 2 kg, height = 174 ± 1 cm, body fat = 10 ± 2%, VO2max 42 ± 1 ml·kg(-1)), 8 wingers (22 ± 1 years, body mass = 68 ± 2 kg, height = 169 ± 3 cm, body fat = 11 ± 2%, VO2max = 48 ± 1 ml·kg(-1)), and 8 pivots (25 ± 2 years, body mass 71 ± 2 kg, height 173 ± 2 cm, body fat 10 ± 2%, VO2max 46 ± 2 ml·kg(-1)). Blood samples were collected from the participants before and immediately after a match. Muscle damage was detected based on CK and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. The inflammatory status was evaluated by determining C-reactive protein and cytokines (TNF-α, interleukin [IL]-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-1ra). Goalkeepers showed higher LDH and IL-6 than players occupying other tactical positions, leading to the conclusion that the tactical position of futsal goalkeeper causes more inflammation and muscle damage than other positions. Moreover, this position is usually occupied by athletes with higher body mass and percentage of body fat and lower VO2max than players in the other positions.

Insulin resistance condition is associated to the development of several syndromes, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Although the factors linking insulin resistance to these syndromes are not precisely defined yet, evidence suggests that the elevated plasma free fatty acid (FFA) level plays an important role in the development of skeletal muscle insulin resistance. Accordantly, in vivo and in vitro exposure of skeletal muscle and myocytes to physiological concentrations of saturated fatty acids is associated with insulin resistance condition. Several mechanisms have been postulated to account for fatty acids-induced muscle insulin resistance, including Randle cycle, oxidative stress, inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Here we reviewed experimental evidence supporting the involvement of each of these propositions in the development of skeletal muscle insulin resistance induced by saturated fatty acids and propose an integrative model placing mitochondrial dysfunction as an important and common factor to the other mechanisms.

Inflammatory response and neutrophil functions in players after a futsal match. J Strength Cond Res 26(9): 2507-2514, 2012-Futsal players suffer injuries resulting from muscle fatigue and contact or collision among players. Muscle lesions can be detected by measuring muscle lesion markers such as creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in plasma. After an initial lesion, there is an increase in the plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and proinflammatory cytokines. These mediators may activate neutrophils and contribute to tissue damage and increase susceptibility to invasive microorganisms. In this study, we investigated the effect of a futsal match on muscle lesion markers, cytokines, and CRP in elite players. The basal and stimulated neutrophil responsiveness after a match was also evaluated based on measurements of neutrophil necrosis, apoptosis, phagocytic capacity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α], interleukin [IL]-8, IL-1ß, IL-10, and IL-1ra) production. Blood samples were taken from 16 players (26.4 ± 3.2 years, 70.2 ± 6.9 kg, 59.7 ± 5.1 ml·kg·min, sports experience of 4.4 ± 0.9 years) before and immediately after a match. Exercise increased the serum activities of CK (2.5-fold) and LDH (1.3-fold). Playing futsal also increased the serum concentrations of IL-6 (1.6-fold) and CRP (1.6-fold). The TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-8, IL-1ra, and IL-10 serum levels were not modified in the conditions studied. The futsal match induced neutrophil apoptosis, as indicated by phosphatidylserine externalization (6.0-fold). The exercise induced priming of neutrophils by increasing ROS (1.3-fold), TNF-α (5.8-fold), and IL-1ß (4.8-fold) released in nonstimulated cells. However, in the stimulated condition, the exercise decreased neutrophil function, diminishing the release of ROS by phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated neutrophils (1.5-fold), and the phagocytic capacity (1.6-fold). We concluded that playing futsal induces inflammation, primes and activates neutrophils, and reduces the efficiency of neutrophil phagocytosis immediately after a match.

The hypothesis that during intense muscle contraction induced by electrical stimulation, long chain fatty acids (LCFA) might reduce mitochondrial ATP/ADP ratio, raising the contribution of glycolysis for ATP production was examined. The effect of a lipid infusion (Lipovenus emulsion) on UCP-3 mRNA level, lactate, glucose-6-phosphate (G-6P) and glycogen content was investigated in rat. Blood samples for determination of free fatty acids and lactate were collected at 0, 30 and 60 min during rest and at 0, 10 and 20 min during muscle contraction. The content of lactate, glycogen and G-6P was also determined in soleus (SO), red gastrocnemius (RG) and white gastrocnemius (WG) muscles collected immediately after muscle contraction period. In addition, the force level was determined during muscle contractions. The effect of Lipovenus emulsion on respiration of mitochondria isolated from rat skeletal muscle, and content of UCP-3 and lactate in cultured skeletal muscle cells was also determined. The in vivo experiments showed that Lipovenus induced a significant increase of UCP-3 mRNA levels. After Lipovenus infusion, lactate level was increased in RG muscle only, whereas the contents of glycogen and G-6P were decreased in both RG and WG muscles (P < 0.05). Lipovenus infusion failed to exert any effect on muscle force performance (P > 0.05). The in vitro experiments showed that Lipovenus infusion induced a significant increase in mitochondrial respiration, but had no effect on UCP-3 content. Lactate concentration was significantly increased in the culture medium of stimulated cells in the control and Lipovenus groups compared with the respective not-stimulated cells (P< 0.05). We concluded that as mitochondrial function becomes limited by the FFA-uncoupling effect, the ATP demand is mainly supplied by anaerobic glucose metabolism preventing an expected decrease in muscle contraction performance.

Acute effects of free fatty acids (FFA) were investigated on: (1) glucose oxidation, and UCP-2 and -3 mRNA and protein levels in 1 h incubated rat soleus and extensor digitorium longus (EDL) muscles, (2) mitochondrial membrane potential in cultured skeletal muscle cells, (3) respiratory activity and transmembrane electrical potential in mitochondria isolated from rat skeletal muscle, and (4) oxygen consumption by anesthetized rats. Long-chain FFA increased both basal and insulin-stimulated glucose oxidation in incubated rat soleus and EDL muscles and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential in C2C12 myotubes and rat skeletal muscle cells. Caprylic, palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acid increased O(2) consumption and decreased electrical membrane potential in isolated mitochondria from rat skeletal muscles. FFA did not alter UCP-2 and -3 mRNA and protein levels in rat soleus and EDL muscles. Palmitic acid increased oxygen consumption by anesthetized rats. These results suggest that long-chain FFA acutely lead to mitochondrial uncoupling in skeletal muscle.

Commercially available lipid emulsions for parenteral nutrition are mainly composed by long chain triacylglycerol containing a high proportion of linoleic acid (LA) or oleic acid (OA). The immunological impact of such therapy is particularly important because parenteral diets are often administered to critically ill patients as a mechanism to supply adequate nutrition during catabolic stress conditions. The comparative toxicity of OA and LA on human lymphocytes and the type of cell death induced by these fatty acids were determined in vitro. Parameters of cell death were investigated by flow cytometry-cell viability, DNA fragmentation, phosphatidylserine externalization, mitochondrial depolarization, neutral lipid accumulation and production of reactive oxygen species-and by fluorescence microscopy-chromatin condensation. Additionally a spectrofluorometric assay was employed to determine the activities of caspase--3, 6 and 8. Evidence is presented herein that OA is less toxic to human lymphocytes than LA. However, both fatty acids promoted apoptosis and necrosis of these cells. The mechanism of cell death induced by OA involved activation of caspase 3 while the mechanism of death induced by LA involved mitochondrial depolarization and ROS production. Importantly, neutral lipid accumulation may be a mechanism to protect lymphocytes against the toxicity induced by OA. OA may offer an immunological less problematic alternative to LA with respect to fatty acid composition of parenteral nutritional emulsions.

In the present study, the effects of C18 fatty acids with different numbers of double bonds, SA (stearic acid; C18:0), OA (oleic acid; C18:1), LA (linoleic acid; C18:2) and gamma-LNA (gamma-linolenic acid; C18:3), on ROS (reactive oxygen species) production by Jurkat (a human T-lymphocyte-derived cell line) and Raji (a human B-lymphocyte-derived cell line) cells were investigated.
