Introduction: Schistosomiasis is caused by the Schistosoma genus and is transmitted through intermediate hosts, such as snails. Methods: A cross-sectional investigation was conducted within and surrounding Haramaya town between December 2022 and May 2023 to estimate the prevalence of schistosomiasis in cattle and associated risk factors. The degree of prevalence was estimated using surveys carried out in slaughterhouses and coprological laboratories. For statistical estimation, chi-square tests and logistic regression were utilized. A total of 390 samples were obtained through simple random sampling. In the survey that was undertaken on abattoirs, a total of 384 samples were chosen through the utilization of a systematic random sampling approach. The recovery of Schistosoma eggs from fecal specimens was achieved by sedimentation. Results: The overall rates of schistosomiasis in cattle were estimated to be 21.28% and 18.23% through coprological and postmortem examinations, respectively. The analysis conducted through multivariable logistic regression indicated that management system, body condition, and age were significant risk factors. Cattle under extensive management (OR = 5.9, 95% CI = 2-17) and those in the young age category (OR = 2.7, 95% CI = 1.0-7.00) were more susceptible to acquiring schistosomiasis than cattle under intensive management and those in the adult age category, respectively. According to the odds ratio, there was a positive association between the incidence rate of schistosomiasis in cattle and poor body condition (OR: 3.048, 95% CI = 1.07-8.68; P = 0.00). Schistosomiasis infection was 3.048 times more likely to manifest in animals in poor physical condition. This affliction has had a profound impact on the livestock industry, as substantiated by the elevated prevalence of schistosomiasis in cattle within the studied region. Conclusion: Consequently, an integrated approach to prevention and control that targets the parasite is needed.

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is an arthropod-borne virus that emerged recently in northwestern Europe in 2011 that affects domestic and wild ruminants and induces abortion, stillbirth, and newborns with congenital anomalies. Since its discovery, SBV has spread very rapidly to too many countries in the world. The overall serological investigation of SBV is needed to improve modeling predictions and assess the overall impact on ruminant animals, which helps to design interventions for control and prevention strategies. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the overall serological assay of SBV in both domestic and wild ruminants around the world. This systematic review was conducted as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. International databases were employed To search for relevant articles. The pooled prevalence with a 95% confidence interval was calculated with a random effects model. The Cochran's Q test, τ2, and I2 were used to assess the sources of heterogeneity. In the current meta-analysis, a total of 41 articles were included. The overall pooled proportion of SBV in domestic and wild ruminants was 49 and 26%, respectively. Substantial heterogeneity was observed in studies on domestic ruminants (I2 = 99.7%; p < 0.01) and studies on wild ruminants (I2 = 97.9%; p < 0.01). The pooled prevalence of SBV was significantly associated with publication time, detection techniques, and species of animals. According to the subgroup analysis, the highest pooled prevalence of SBV was reported in cattle (59%), followed by sheep (37%) and goat (18%). In addition to the subgroup analysis based on publication year, the pooled prevalence of SBV infection has become endemic since 2013 (49%) among domestic animals in the world. Of the diagnostic tests used, the highest anti-SBV antibodies (66%) were detected by a virus neutralization test. In this meta-analysis, the major wild animals that were infected by SBV were red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, mouflon, and wild boar. The highest sub-pooled prevalence of SBV was found in roe deer (46%), followed by fallow deer (30%), red deer (27%), mouflon (22%), and wild boar (11%). In general, the prevalence of SBV was high in cattle among domestic ruminants and in roe deer among wild animals. According to the current information provided by this meta-analysis, evidence-based risk management measures should be established to restrict SBV spread in both domestic and wild ruminants.

Background: Dairy cows get mastitis from a common infection called Staphylococcus aureus. Because of its broad distribution across diverse populations and capacity to acquire antibiotic resistance, this particular bacterial strain presents a serious threat to public health. The main goals of this study were to determine the beta-lactam resistance profile of S. aureus in Ethiopian dairy cows and to offer thorough epidemiological data. Methods: We employed manual searches, Web of Science, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar HINARI for electronic bibliographic data. Results: Twenty-six epidemiological studies were included in this systematic review. Of these studies, 12 articles in Oromia, 4 articles in Addis Ababa, 4 articles in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's (SNNPRS), 3 articles in Tigray, and 3 articles in Amhara region. The average prevalence S. aureus were 34.3% in Oromia, 40.2% in Amhara, 39.5 in AA, 40% in Tigray and 21% in SNNPRS. The antimicrobial resistance rate of S. aureus, specifically in relation to beta-lactam drugs, exhibited an average estimation. Notably, penicillin resistance reached a rate of 75%, while amoxicillin resistance stood at 67%. Furthermore, it was determined that, when treating S. aureus, the resistance rates to ampicillin and cephalosporin were 50% and 57%, respectively. Conclusion: The results of this analysis have demonstrated a considerable rise in S. aureus prevalence and beta-lactam resistance within the Ethiopian geographic environment. This emphasizes the critical need for alternate therapeutic approaches and preventative measures in order to successfully lessen the disease's extensive spread and detrimental effects across the nation.

Schistosomiasis is a tropical and subtropical parasitic infection that affects both animals and humans. It's caused by the Schistosoma genus and spreads via snails as an intermediate host. Schistosoma bovis is widely spread in Ethiopia's Northern, Eastern, Southwestern, and Central regions. It is an economically significant cattle disease with global health implications. Despite numerous prevalence studies of bovine schistosomiasis in different regions of the country, no systematic review and meta-analysis of the disease has ever been undertaken. As a reason, the purpose of this research was to provide information that can be used in the planning and design of Schistosoma interventions in Ethiopia, as the world aims to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem by 2030. The PRISMA statement guidline was used to check the eligiblities of the included studies. Electronic bibliographic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, HINARI, and Web of science, reference lists from retriv articles, books, libraries, megazins and existing reviews manaually were employed for literature searches. The pooled prevalence of bovine schistosomiasis and heterogeneity among included studies was estimated by employing random effect models and the inverse variance index, respectively. To investigate the source of heterogeneity across and within studies, subgroup analysis was undertaken based on sample size, study years, and study regions. To assess publication bias and small study effects, funnel plotsand Egger's regression test were used. The pooled prevalence was calculated with a 95% confidence interval using STATA 17 software. To identify the various risk variables related to the prevalence of bovine schistosomiasis, a pooled odd ratio was used Based on the inclusion criteria, a total of 20 studies were discovered and included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of bovine schistosomiasis was found to range from 22 to 45.7%. In this meta-analysis, the estimated pooled prevalence of bovine schistosomiasis was 24% (95% CI: 17% to 31%). Substantial heterogeneity was observed across the included studies (I2 = 88.04%; p< 0.001). The results of the funnel plot and Egger'stests revealed no substantial publication bias (Egger's test; p = 0.509). The pooled odds ratio indicated that poor body condition was positively associated with the infection rate of bovine schistosomiasis (OR: 4.915, 95% CI: 2.675 to 9.030; p<0.001), with poor body conditioned animals having 4.915 times higher likelihood to schistosomiasis infection. This review found that the overall prevalence of bovine schistosomiasis was high and the body condition of animals was identified risk factor for Schistosoma infection among the studied factors. Therefore, this review found that the occurrence of bovine schistosomiasis was strongly associated with the state of body condition of animals. Further, sufficient numbers of prospective studies should be conducted to address other potential risk factors of bovine schistosomiasis in Ethiopia.

Introduction: In this study we aimed to provide preliminary evidence on the safety and efficacy of the currently used ovine pasteurellosis vaccine in Ethiopia using clinical and pathological endpoints. Methods: Twenty, conventionally reared, apparently healthy, seronegative male lambs, were randomly classified into two groups of 10 animals as "vaccinated-challenged" and "unvaccinated-challenged controls". The first group received 1 mL of the licensed Pasteurella multocida biotype A based vaccine subcutaneously while the second group received phosphate-buffered saline as a placebo. Following vaccination, lambs were monitored for one month for potential vaccine adverse reactions. Five weeks postvaccination, all lambs were immunosuppressed using dexamethasone, and intratracheally challenged with 5.2×109 CFU/mL live Mannheimia haemolytica A1 (clinical isolates). Then, all lambs were followed up for eight days for clinical examination and necropsied on the ninth day postchallenge for pathological investigation. Results: There were no safety issues recorded during the study. In terms of clinical signs, lambs developed fever, depression, mucoid bilateral oculonasal discharge, coughing and sneezing regardless of their vaccination status. Fisher's exact test between vaccination status and each clinical sign showed a statistically insignificant association (p>0.05). The main pathological findings in both groups were pulmonary congestion, atelectasis, emphysema, and suppurative bronchopneumonia. Consolidation lung lesion score of +1 (5/10 of vaccinated, 6/10 of unvaccinated) and +2 (3/10 of vaccinated, 4/10 of unvaccinated) were recorded in a statistically indifferent manner among both vaccinated and nonvaccinated groups (p>0.05). Discussion and Conclusion: Collectively, the results suggested that the vaccine posed no safety concern and presumably lacks protective efficacy against local isolates. However, the study did not analyze antibody titer and their functionality using serum bactericidal assays. Further confirmatory studies could provide more evidence on the vaccine efficacy. Safety should further be assessed in a field setting involving a large number of animals to enable detection of rare vaccine adverse events.
