RESUMEN

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanoparticles (NPs) was anchored on wood by simple spraying method, then both soft and hard wood has been endowed efficient function photocatalytic degradation toward organic dyes and formaldehyde gas synergistically. The best recycle ability of wood based photocatalyst toward organic pollutants was achieved, which was characterized by photocatalytic degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB) more than 95% after 100 cycles, and formaldehyde gas over 85% after 60 cycles. Cu2O NPs@wood performed much lower forbidden bandwidth (Eg), which accelerated to generate much more radical of e- and finally promoted the capacity of photocatalytic degradation. The proposed Cu2O NPs@wood catalysts has potential to be applied both in the field of wastewater and air pollution remediation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Overadjustment bias occurs when researchers adjust for an explanatory variable on the causal pathway from exposure to outcome, which leads to biased estimates of the causal effect of the exposure. This meta-research review aimed to examine how previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses of socio-economic inequalities in health have managed overadjustment bias. METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase until 16 April 2021 for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational studies on associations between individual-level socio-economic position and health outcomes in any population. A set of criteria were developed to examine methodological approaches to overadjustment bias adopted by included reviews (rated Yes/No/Somewhat/Unclear). RESULTS: Eighty-four reviews were eligible (47 systematic reviews, 37 meta-analyses). Regarding approaches to overadjustment, whereas 73% of the 84 reviews were rated as Yes for clearly defining exposures and outcomes, all other approaches were rated as Yes for <55% of reviews; for instance, 5% clearly defined confounders and mediators, 2% constructed causal diagrams and 35% reported adjusted variables for included studies. Whereas only 2% included overadjustment in risk of bias assessment, 54% included confounding. Of the 37 meta-analyses, 16% conducted sensitivity analyses related to overadjustment. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that overadjustment bias has received insufficient consideration in systematic reviews and meta-analyses of socio-economic inequalities in health. This is a critical issue given that overadjustment bias is likely to result in biased estimates of health inequalities and accurate estimates are needed to inform public health interventions. There is a need to highlight overadjustment bias in review guidelines.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Three different shapes of gold nanoparticles were synthesized in this experiment. At the same time, studies compared their effects with human serum albumin (HSA). Methods: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with three different morphologies, such as, nanospheres (AuNSs), nanorods (AuNRs), and nanoflowers (AuNFs) were synthesized via a seeding method and their characteristic absorption peaks were detected using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy, Telectron microscopy (TEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential measurements, circular dichroism (CD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to study the interactions between them and HSA. By comparing the thermodynamic parameters and quenching mechanism of the three materials, similarities and differences were determined in their interactions with HSA. Results: The results showed that with an increase in the concentration of the AuNPs with the three different morphologies, the UV-vis absorption peak intensity of the mixed solution increased, but its fluorescence intensity was quenched. This indicates that the three types of AuNPs interact with HSA, and that the interactions between them represent a static quenching process, which is consistent with the conclusions derived from three-dimensional fluorescence experiments. Through variable-temperature fluorescence experiments, the binding constants, number of binding sites, and thermodynamic parameters of the interactions between the three types of AuNPs and HSA were determined. The Gibbs free energy changes were <0, indicating that the reactions of the three types of AuNPs with HSA are spontaneous, resulting in associated matter. Binding constant measurements indicated that the strongest binding took place between the AuNFs and HSA. In addition, the results of fluorescence, CD spectroscopy, and FTIR showed that three different shapes of AuNPs can induce conformational changes in HSA and reduce the α-helix content. Among them, AuNFs have the smallest ability to induce conformational changes. Discussion: According to studies, AuNFs interact more favorably with HSA. This can be used as a reference for the administration of drugs containing AuNPs.

RESUMEN

RATIONALE: Abdominal pregnancy is a rare ectopic pregnancy and its diagnosis and treatment are more challenging than those of other ectopic pregnancies. Because of a variable pregnancy site, abdominal pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of fatal abdominal hemorrhage, and consequently, an increased risk of maternal death compared with intrauterine pregnancy. DIAGNOSES: Pelvic infundibulum ligament pregnancy complicated with massive hemorrhage. PATIENT CONCERNS: 42-year-old pregnant woman who did not undergo an obstetric examination during the first trimester presented with sudden abdominal pain during the second trimester. Abdominal pregnancy was confirmed after emergency treatment, causing difficulty in the comprehensive preoperative evaluation.Interventions: In order to save the patient life, we actively carried out surgical treatment. OUTCOMES: The patient recovered well after the operation and was discharged on the 11th postoperative day. Blood ß-human chorionic gonadotropin (ß-hCG) levels and routine blood test results were normal 1 month after the surgery, and the patient had recovered. LESSONS: Several challenges are encountered in the diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy with regard to insufficient economic, cultural, and medical resources. In case of ectopic pregnancies, surgery should be the first choice of treatment, and preparations of blood transfusion are essential to combat the risk of rapid hemorrhagic shock caused by placenta implantation in the infundibulum ligament of the pelvis. The operation must be performed by experienced obstetricians and gynecologists.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The study was aimed at evaluating the effects of areca nut extract (ANE) on the growth performance, cecal microbiota, and immunity of Wenchang chickens. Methods: For this study, 42-day-old healthy Wenchang chickens (n = 450) with similar body weight were chosen. The animals were randomly divided into five groups, with six replicates per group and 15 chickens per replicate. One group was fed a basal diet (control; CCK). The remaining four groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with varying ANE concentrations: 0.038, 0.063, 0.100, and 0.151 g/kg, with the groups denoted as CNT1, CNT2, CNT3, and CNT4, respectively. The feeding experiment lasted 35 days. The ligated cecum segments of the control and experimental groups were collected for metabolomic and metagenomic analysis, while the bone marrow samples were extracted for tandem mass tag (TMT)-based proteomic analysis. Results: All the experimental groups exhibited significantly higher average daily gain (ADG) and significantly lower feed-to-weight (F/G) ratios than CCK. Metabolomic screening of the cecum contents revealed the presence of 544 differential metabolites, including several gut health-related metabolites, such as xanthine, hydroxy hypoxanthine, 2,5-dimethylhydrazine, ganoderic acid, and 2-aminohexanoic acid. Metagenomic analysis of the cecum contents showed an upregulation in the abundance of Prevotella spp. in the experimental groups. However, we observed no significant differences in the abundances of other cecal microbes at phylum and genus levels. Furthermore, we observed significant associations between Prevotella spp. and the differentially abundant metabolites, such as cherubins, thiaburimamide, and 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine, (r)-mevalonate, 5-O-methylalloptaeroxylin, nalidixic acid, and deoxyloganin (p < 0.05). Proteomic analysis revealed that the differentially expressed proteins (such as interferon-induced protein with tetratricopeptide repeats 5 (IFIT5), MHC-BF1, and death domain-associated protein (Daxx)) in the bone marrow of the chickens were primarily enriched in the immune network for IgA production and B cell receptor signaling pathway. Conclusion: In conclusion, dietary ANE supplementation was found to enhance metabolic activity and energy utilization, improve growth performance, modulate cecal microbiota, and strengthen the immunity of Wenchang chickens.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In recent years, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gradually been widely used, especially in the field of anticancer medicine. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the gynaecological malignancy with the highest mortality rate, and the current treatment is still based on surgery, chemotherapy and postoperative targeted therapy. Therefore, the development of safe and effective nanoparticles for targeted therapy of OC is very important. This study aimed to prepare a new type of triangular silver nanoparticles (tAgNPs) and evaluate the anticancer properties for OC in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: The tAgNPs were chemically synthesized and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry and other techniques. By performing cell-based tests, such as cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), plate colony formation, cell apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and western blot (WB) assays, the inhibitory effects and related mechanisms of tAgNPs on OC cells were analysed. The anticancer effect of tAgNPs in vivo was verified by a SKOV3 tumor-bearing mouse model. RESULTS: Five types of tAgNPs with different colours were successfully synthesized, with a particle size of 25-50 nm and a good dispersion. The results of in vitro experiments showed that tAgNPs treatment reduced the viability and proliferation of SKOV3 cells, arrested the cell cycle in G0/G1 phase, inhibited the expression levels of proliferation-related factors and cyclins, and promoted cell apoptosis by producing ROS and increasing caspase-3 activity. Consistent with the results of in vitro experiments, in vivo animal experiments also showed that tAgNPs significantly inhibited the proliferation of ovarian cancer. More importantly, no obvious toxic and side effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, a novel triangular AgNPs was successfully prepared. tAgNPs are very stable, significantly inhibit the proliferation of OC cells and tumour growth in tumour-bearing mice, providing a promising nanotargeted therapy for OC.

RESUMEN

Background: When studying drug effects using observational data, time-related biases may exist and result in spurious associations. Numerous observational studies have investigated metformin and dementia risk, but have reported inconsistent findings, some of which might be caused by unaddressed time-related biases. Immortal time bias biases the results toward a "protective" effect, whereas time-lag and time-window biases can lead to either a "detrimental" or "protective" effect. Objective: To conduct a systematic review examining time-related biases in the literature on metformin and dementia. Methods: The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest were searched for the terms "Metformin" AND ("dementia" OR "Alzheimer's Disease" OR "cognitive impairment"). These databases were searched from inception through 09/24/2021. Only English language articles and human research were eligible. Results: Seventeen studies were identified: thirteen cohort studies, two case-control studies, and two nested case-control studies. Eleven (64.7%) studies reported a reduced risk of dementia associated with metformin use; two (11.8%) suggested metformin increased dementia risk, while four (23.5%) concluded no significant associations. Eight (61.5%) of thirteen cohort studies had immortal time bias or did not clearly address it. Fifteen (88.2%) of seventeen reviewed studies had time-lag bias or did not clearly address it. Two (50.0%) of four case-control studies did not explicitly address time-window bias. The studies that addressed most biases concluded no associations between metformin and dementia risk. Conclusion: None of the reviewed studies clearly addressed relevant time-related biases, illustrating time-related biases are common in observational studies investigating the impact of anti-diabetic medications on dementia risk.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Parental involvement in mobile health (mHealth) to consult with medical professionals appears to be prevalent in China with the rapid development of the internet. More parents with busy jobs have chosen to use mHealth. During the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, mHealth can assist with health promotion, directions for medication use, and disease diagnosis via online chat and video consultation without contacting others. To our knowledge, no studies have been performed to explore the role of mHealth in parents' attitudes toward child health care at home during the COVID-19 outbreak. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the associated factors of willingness to adopt mHealth among Chinese parents during the COVID-19 outbreak and to explore the correlation between the frequency of adopting mHealth and parents' attitudes toward child health care at home. METHODS: Chinese parents were asked to complete an online survey from January 25 to February 15, 2020. The questionnaire comprised of two parts with a total of 16 items, including parents' demographic variables and attitudes toward child health care at home. By multivariate logistic regression, we explored factors associated with parents' willingness to adopt mHealth during the COVID-19 outbreak. Pearson chi-square tests were used to reveal the correlation between the frequency of adopting mHealth and parents' attitudes toward child health care at home. RESULTS: A total of 254 parents enrolled, and 202 (79.5%) parents were willing to adopt mHealth during the COVID-19 outbreak. Parents' age (26-35 years: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 8.114, 95% CI 1.471-44.764), parents' interest in the COVID-19 pandemic (moderate: AOR 8.753, 95% CI 2.009-38.127; high: AOR 22.194, 95% CI 5.509-89.411), the source that recommended mHealth (medical health providers: AOR 4.257, 95% CI 1.439-12.596), the presence of chronic disease in their children (yes: AOR 20.844, 95% CI 4.600-94.443), parents' duration of daily internet use (4-6 hours: AOR 6.487, 95% CI 1.870-22.495; >6 hours: AOR 8.766, 95% CI 1.883-40.804), and adoption of mHealth before the COVID-19 outbreak (yes: AOR 3.413, 95% CI 1.234-9.444) were significantly correlated with the parents' willingness to adopt mHealth during the COVID-19 outbreak. The frequency of mHealth use among parents was correlated with their behaviors in regard to handwashing (χ26=18.967, P=.004), mask wearing (χ26=45.364, P<.001), frequency of leaving the home (χ26=16.767, P=.01), room disinfection and ventilation (χ26=19.515, P=.003), temperature checking (χ26=17.47, P=.007), and mental health care of children (χ26=63.810, P<.001) during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: We found various objective factors that were associated with parents' willingness to adopt mHealth during the COVID-19 outbreak. Overall, parents' willingness to adopt mHealth was high. The frequency of mHealth use among parents was correlated with their attitudes toward child health care at home. The option of mHealth to patients at home during the COVID-19 outbreak would be beneficial for education and improvement in self-management of child health care at home.

RESUMEN

In situ stress is generally an anisotropic/true triaxial stress (σ 1 > σ 2 > σ 3). Bedding weakens the continuity and integrity of coal. It is critical to understand the mechanical behaviour and gas migration of coal under true triaxial stress conditions. We performed experiments of cubic coal samples to investigate the permeability evolution and mechanical behaviour of coal under true triaxial stress conditions by using newly developed true triaxial geophysical apparatus. We analysed the effect of principal stresses on deformation and permeability characteristics of coal containing bedding planes. The results show that volumetric strain, stress states and bedding directions determine the permeability comprehensively. The variable quantity of strain was the largest in the direction normal to the bedding plane. The expansion or compression degree was characterized by the difference between the major and minor principal strain (ɛ 1 - ɛ 3). Essentially, this represents the difficulty degree with regard to coal being compressed at the initial stress state and the deformation degree in ɛ 1 and ɛ 3 direction. The variation of (ɛ 1 - ɛ 3) was consistent with that of permeability. Under an identical true triaxial stress condition, permeability was smaller when larger stress was applied in the direction normal to the bedding plane. Additionally, stress level in the direction parallel to the bedding planes and the directions between stresses in the direction parallel to the bedding planes and the flow direction also affect the permeability and strain. By solving lateral expansion coefficient, coal also exhibited anisotropic properties.
