RESUMEN

In this work, the effects of Si doping in GaAs nanowires (NWs) grown on GaAs (111)B by molecular beam epitaxy with different Si doping levels (nominal free carrier concentrations of 1 × 1016, 8 × 1016, 1 × 1018 and 5 × 1018 cm-3) are deeply investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID), photoluminescence (PL) and cathadoluminescence (CL). TEM results reveal a mixture of wurtzite (WZ) and zinc-blende (ZB) segments along the NW axis independently of the Si doping levels. GID measurements suggest a slight increase of the ZB fraction with the Si doping. Low temperature PL and CL spectra exhibit sharp lines in the energy range 1.41-1.48 eV, for the samples with lower Si doping levels. However, the emission intensity increases and is accompanied by a clear broadening of the observed lines for the samples with higher Si doping levels. The staggered type-II band alignment only determines the optical properties of the lower doping levels in GaAs:Si NWs. For the higher Si doping levels, the electronic energy level structure of the NWs is determined by electrostatic fluctuating potentials intimately related to the amphoteric behavior of the Si dopant in GaAs. For the heavily doped NWs, the estimated depth of the potential wells is ∼96-117 meV. Our results reveal that the occurrence of the fluctuating potentials is not dependent on the crystalline phase and shows that the limitation imposed by the polytypism can be overcome.

RESUMEN

An individual tin oxide (SnO2) nanobelt was connected in a back-gate field-effect transistor configuration and the conductivity of the nanobelt was measured at different temperatures from 400 K to 4 K, in darkness and under UV illumination. In darkness, the SnO2 nanobelts showed semiconductor behavior for the whole temperature range measured. However, when subjected to UV illumination the photoinduced carriers were high enough to lead to a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT), near room temperature, at T MIT = 240 K. By measuring the current versus gate voltage curves, and considering the electrostatic properties of a non-ideal conductor, for the SnO2 nanobelt on top of a gate-oxide substrate, we estimated the capacitance per unit length, the mobility and the density of carriers. In darkness, the density was estimated to be 5-10 × 1018 cm-3, in agreement with our previously reported result (Phys. Status Solid. RRL 6, 262-4 (2012)). However, under UV illumination the density of carriers was estimated to be 0.2-3.8 × 1019 cm-3 near T MIT, which exceeded the critical Mott density estimated to be 2.8 × 1019 cm-3 above 240 K. These results showed that the electrical properties of the SnO2 nanobelts can be drastically modified and easily tuned from semiconducting to metallic states as a function of temperature and light.

RESUMEN

Cotton-based nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), also known as nanopaper, one of the major sources of renewable materials, is a promising substrate and component for producing low cost fully recyclable flexible paper electronic devices and systems due to its properties (lightweight, stiffness, non-toxicity, transparency, low thermal expansion, gas impermeability and improved mechanical properties). Here, we have demonstrated for the first time a thin transparent nanopaper-based field effect transistor (FET) where NCC is simultaneously used as the substrate and as the gate dielectric layer in an 'interstrate' structure, since the device is built on both sides of the NCC films; while the active channel layer is based on oxide amorphous semiconductors, the gate electrode is based on a transparent conductive oxide.Such hybrid FETs present excellent operating characteristics such as high channel saturation mobility (>7 cm(2) V (-1) s(-1)), drain-source current on/off modulation ratio higher than 10(5), enhancement n-type operation and subthreshold gate voltage swing of 2.11 V/decade. The NCC film FET characteristics have been measured in air ambient conditions and present good stability, after two weeks of being processed, without any type of encapsulation or passivation layer. The results obtained are comparable to ones produced for conventional cellulose paper, marking this out as a promising approach for attaining high-performance disposable electronics such as paper displays, smart labels, smart packaging, RFID (radio-frequency identification) and point-of-care systems for self-analysis in bioscience applications, among others.

RESUMEN

The electrical observation of energy sub-band formation in the electronic structure, that gives rise to the phenomenon of quantized transport is reported in tin oxide (SnO2) nanobelt back-gate field-effect transistors, at low temperatures. Sub-band formation was observed as current oscillations in the drain current vs. gate voltage characteristics, and was analyzed considering the nanobelt as a "quantum wire" with a rectangular cross-section and hard walls. The lateral quantum confinement in the nanowires created conditions for the successive filling of the first twelve electron energy sub-bands, as the gate voltage increases. When the source-drain voltage is changed, the oscillations are not dislocated with respect to the gate voltage indicating flat-band energies, and that the observations are incompatible with the phenomena of Coulomb blockade and tunnelling oscillations. The separation of the energy sub-bands was found to be in good agreement with the measured cross-section dimensions of the nanobelt and with the threshold temperature, since for T > 60 K the oscillations tend to vanish.

RESUMEN

This article describes the clinical case of an 86-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic clinical condition, without presenting a history of previous traumatisms. When routine radiographic exam-panoramic radiograph-was performed, the following extensions of the paranasal sinuses were found: maxillary sinus (palate), sphenoid sinus (pterygoid process, major wing, and anterior clinoid process), and supraorbital portion of the frontal sinus. Thus computerized tomography was performed to confirm the diagnosis.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different trough types on the water consumption and drinking behaviour of pasture-based beef heifers. Two trials were implemented with 32 beef heifers to test two different types of water troughs, namely a rectangular concrete trough (RC) and a round polyvinyl chloride water tank (PVC). In Trial 1, both troughs were simultaneously available to groups of four animals within eight paddocks. In Trial 2, the animals were distributed in pairs throughout 16 paddocks and, in a crossover design, were exposed to one type of trough at a time. In both trials, estimated water intake was per four animals. Number of drinking bouts, time spent drinking and amount of water intake from the RC and PVC trough were recorded in both trials. Data were statistically analysed by analysis of variance. In Trial 1, group and trough effect were in the model. In Trial 2, stage, pair and trough were tested. In Trial 1, where both types of troughs were available, animals had a higher number of drinking bouts (3.32 v. 0.57 ± 0.09; P < 0.01), longer drinking periods (144.21 v. 22.81 ± 7.3 s; P < 0.01) and greater intake (160.21 v. 23.76 ± 13.06 l; P < 0.01) from the PVC water tank, compared to the RC trough. In Trial 2, all groups drank more often (5.10 v. 3.28 ± 0.32; P < 0.001), for longer periods (167.23 v. 115.23 ± 15.61 s; P < 0.02) and with higher intake (141.36 v. 118.47 ± 5.01 l; P < 0.02) from the PVC than from the RC trough. Thus, heifers not only prefer, but also drink more from a PVC water tank in comparison to a RC trough.

RESUMEN

Direct evidences of enhanced Ga interdiffusion in InAs free-standing nanowires grown at moderate temperatures by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs (111)B are presented in this work. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements in coplanar and grazing incidence geometries show that nominally grown InAs NWs are actually made of an In0.86Ga0.14As alloy. Unlike typical vapor-liquid-solid growth, these nanowires are formed by diffusion-induced growth combined with strong interdiffusion from substrate material. Based on the experimental results, a simple nanowire growth model accounting for the Ga interdiffusion is also presented. This growth model could be generally applicable to the molecular beam heteroepitaxy of III-V nanowires.

RESUMEN

We have observed low frequency current oscillations in a semi-insulating GaAs sample grown by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy. For this, an experimental setup proper to measure high impedance samples with small external noise was developed. Spontaneous oscillations in the current were observed for some bias conditions. Although measurements were carried out from room temperature down to liquid helium, the dynamical analysis was carried out around 200 K where the signal to noise ratio was fairly favorable. To increase the data quality we have also used a noise reduction algorithm suitably developed for nonlinear systems. We observed attractors having low embedding dimension, limit cycle bifurcations, and chaotic behavior characteristic of nonlinear dynamical processes in route to chaos. Attractor reconstruction, Poincare sections, Lyapunov exponents, and correlation dimension were also analyzed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of side effects of antihypertensive therapy as patients perceive them, their distribution and association with several sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey, made by telephone on a randomized sample of national scale, selected from the telephone directories. PARTICIPANTS: Of a randomized sample of 4480 people contacted, 3374 were interviewed, and 1425 hypertensive patients were identified. Of this group, 1000 (70%) completed the interview, and 425 (30%) refused to participate. METHODS: Patients were interviewed by telephone by a company of market studies. Epi Info was used for statistical analysis. Associations between the occurrence of side effects and the sociodemographic and clinical variables were analysed by logistic regression. MAIN RESULTS: 44.3% of the patients surveyed (45.6% male and 43.6% female), experienced side effects. These were more common among the youngest (50.4%) and the oldest (45.5%). There was a tendency towards an inverse relationship with social class and a significant association (p = 0.009) with the region of residence, the South showing the lowest rate of side effects (26.3%). The analysis of the associations between side effects and the clinical variables showed that only the regularity of medication was close to statistical significance (p = 0.06). The other clinical variables (time since knowledge of hypertension, substitution of medication, number of drugs and current medication) did not show any association with the perception of side effects. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a high prevalence of side effects referred by patients under antihypertensive therapy (44.3%). Among several sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the only significant statistical association found was with region of residence (the South with the lowest rate). The patients' perception of side effects of antihypertensive therapy is admitted as a potential conditioner of compliance and a cause for deficient blood pressure control to be prevented.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic steatosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) have been associated with obesity, non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. The present study was designed in order to evaluate whether patients with steatosis/NASH presented common features with the metabolic syndrome. METHODS: In 30 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes; the glucose/insulin profile, lipid profile, and serum leptin were evaluated and correlated with body composition and energy expenditure, assessed by bioimpedance spectroscopy and indirect calorimetry, respectively. Results were compared with a group of eight controls. RESULTS: Obesity was present in 80% of patients, hypertension in 50% and non insulin dependent diabetes in 33%. Glucose metabolism was altered in 69%, with elevated insulin in 14 patients. Serum leptin, higher in women, was increased in patients: 33.9 +/- 38.9 vs 9.6 +/- 6.9 ng/ml, P< 0.05. There was a correlation between insulin and leptin, both of which correlated with body mass index, fat mass and percentage of body fat. Dyslipidaemia was found in 80% of patients: 45% presented low high density lipoproteins cholesterol, 58% high low density lipoproteins and 38% elevated very low density lipoproteins. CONCLUSIONS: There is a strong association between nonalcoholic fatty liver and features of the metabolic syndrome, suggesting a simultaneous insulin resistance and decreased sensitivity to leptin.

RESUMEN

Microemulsions of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB)/n-butanol/hexadecane/water catalyze the intramolecular degradation of cephaclor. The rate increase is a sensitive function of the microemulsion volume fraction and salt concentration. The effects of microemulsions, analyzed quantitatively using a pseudophase ion-exchange model, assumed that the extent of ion dissociation from the microemulsions varies with volume fraction. Comparison of micellar and microemulsion effects on the same reaction shows that microemulsions are less effective catalysts. Acceleration decreased significantly by increasing the relative proportion of n-butanol ratio in microemulsions and by addition of n-butanol in HTAB micelles. Comparison of the activation parameters of the reaction in aqueous solution, microemulsions, and micelles suggests that catalysis by both aggregates is driven mainly by entropic contributions.
