RESUMEN

This study was designed to explore the relationship between malnutrition, inflammation, and the specific antibody response after influenza vaccination in the elderly. Eighty-two aged subjects, immunized annually against influenza with a trivalent inactivated vaccine, were evaluated for 9 protein markers (albumin, thyroxin-binding prealbumin, transferrin, immunoglobulins (Ig) G, M, and A, orosomucoid, haptoglobin, and C reactive protein) and for their antibody response to influenza viruses in comparison to 29 younger adults who received the same vaccine and 21 unvaccinated adults. IgM and nutritional markers were significantly reduced in the aged as compared to controls, while the opposite pattern was seen for IgA and inflammatory markers. No difference was observed between the elderly and the controls with regard to the antibody response to influenza virus after vaccination. Reciprocally, influenza immunization had no influence on the levels of the protein variables. These results suggest that the protein status does not play an important role in the antibody response to influenza vaccination in the elderly, a fact which could be related to the slight involvement of cellular immunity in the defense against influenza reinfection.

RESUMEN

During a winter epidemic of A/H1N1 influenza virus, we evaluated the protection conferred by vaccination of 285 residents of a nursing home. Fifteen of 204 members of the nursing staff were also vaccinated. Serological determinations were performed before and after vaccination using radial hemolysis (RH) and neuraminidase inhibition (NI) tests. In the outbreak period, only one influenza case was noted in the vaccinated elderly and none among the vaccinated nursing staff. On the other hand, 38 cases (20%) occurred in the unvaccinated hospital personnel. Twenty-one percent of the elderly people exhibited seroconversion to the vaccinal strain by RH and NI while 27 and 20% of the vaccinated nursing staff seroconverted by the same tests, respectively. Thus, the clinical protection conferred by influenza vaccination was excellent and much greater than expected from serological results.

RESUMEN

The treatment of human CMV infection in transplant recipients by intravenous or intramuscular administration with high doses of hyperimmune or normal Ig showed inconsistent results. In fact, all hyperimmune Ig preparations were produced from high anti-CMV Ab titer plasma selected either by ELISA, complement fixation, or indirect hemagglutination test. These tests may not investigate the neutralizing activity of antibodies (Ab). We, therefore compared the ELISA titers with the neutralizing Ab titers in various normal Ig preparations from plasma or placenta and for intramuscular or intravenous use. Hyperimmune plasmatic Igs were also included. All the preparations were tested at a 5% dilution. We report the following data: (1) There is a poor correlation between ELISA and neutralization test. (2) The Igs of placental origin have significantly higher ELISA anti-CMV Ab titers than plasmatic normal Igs. They show the same neutralizing activity. (3) When compared with the normal intravenous Ig, normal intramuscular Igs show significantly higher titers with both techniques (P less than .0001). (4) Normal intramuscular Igs from placenta offer similar ELISA Ab titers and similar or higher neutralizing activity than hyperimmune Igs purified from plasma. It would be worth using Igs with high neutralizing activity in CMV prophylaxis in order to correlate in vitro tests and in vivo protection. In this respect, normal intramuscular Igs from placenta might be challenged in a clinical trial.

RESUMEN

A selection of tests designed to measure certain cognitive and psychomotor functions was administered to 11 subjects on an Antarctic expedition, some of whom had been preacclimatized with cold baths. No evidence was found of deterioration due to the Antarctic climate, or to the lack of preacclimatization. It was concluded that the motivation of the subjects was the crucial factor in maintaining their performance.

RESUMEN

Correlation analyzes of lymphoproliferative responses, total T (E-rosettes) cell levels and autologous rosette-forming cell (A-RFC) levels of healthy human volunteers revealed previously unsuspected sex-associated differences. A negative association existed between response to Con A and E-rosette levels in men, and between PHA lymphoproliferation and E-rosette counts in women, whereas mitogen-induced responses and A-FRC levels varied independently in either sex. Total T cell and A-RFC counts correlated only in man.

RESUMEN

The study aims at finding correlations between the development of assertiveness through assertive training and the modification of the bodily self concept (or body image). Eleven social phobic patients (6 women, 5 men, mean age 31.5) are treated in two groups and measured by Rathus's assertiveness schedule, and Osgood's semantic differential (key concepts: my self, my body, my voice, my gestures, my look; control concept: a table). At post test and follow-up (between 6 and 9 months), an ANOVA shows a significant positive change in assertiveness (p 0.001), correlated with modifications in bodily self concept. The patients are rating their body and their look as more active and stronger, but the body is perceived as more dangerous (p 0.05). No change appears in the other key concepts and the control concept. The interrelation between behavioral and cognitive changes are discussed.

RESUMEN

Two aspects of vigilance are to be distinguished: the quantitative one refers to sleep-wakefulness dimension and the qualitative one refers to focusing of attention. Their combination leads to a curvilinear relationship between activation and performances. After describing the psychometric characteristics of vigilance tests, some examples are given of simple paper-pencil or more sophisticated methods. Physiological indices are also approached. The sources of variation influencing vigilance measurement are presented and also some useful experimental designs. At last some remarks are made on statistical exploitation and interpretation of results.
