RESUMEN

Circularly polarized (CP) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted attention in potential applications, including novel display and photonic technologies. However, conventional approaches cannot meet the requirements of device performance, such as high dissymmetry factor, high directionality, narrowband emission, simplified device structure, and low costs. Here, we demonstrate spin-valley-locked CP-OLEDs without chiral emitters but based on photonic spin-orbit coupling, where photons with opposite CP characteristics are emitted from different optical valleys. These spin-valley-locked OLEDs exhibit a narrowband emission of 16 nm, a high external quantum efficiency of 3.65%, a maximum luminance of near 98,000 cd/m2, and a gEL of up to 1.80, which are among the best performances of active single-crystal CP-OLEDs, achieved with a simple device structure. This strategy opens an avenue for practical applications toward three-dimensional displays and on-chip CP-OLEDs.

Depression, projected to be the predominant contributor to the global disease burden, is a complex condition with diverse symptoms including mood disturbances and cognitive impairments. Traditional treatments such as medication and psychotherapy often fall short, prompting the pursuit of alternative interventions. Recent research has highlighted the significant role of gut microbiota in mental health, influencing emotional and neural regulation. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), the infusion of fecal matter from a healthy donor into the gut of a patient, emerges as a promising strategy to ameliorate depressive symptoms by restoring gut microbial balance. The microbial-gut-brain (MGB) axis represents a critical pathway through which to potentially rectify dysbiosis and modulate neuropsychiatric outcomes. Preclinical studies reveal that FMT can enhance neurochemicals and reduce inflammatory markers, thereby alleviating depressive behaviors. Moreover, FMT has shown promise in clinical settings, improving gastrointestinal symptoms and overall quality of life in patients with depression. The review highlights the role of the gut-brain axis in depression and the need for further research to validate the long-term safety and efficacy of FMT, identify specific therapeutic microbial strains, and develop targeted microbial modulation strategies. Advancing our understanding of FMT could revolutionize depression treatment, shifting the paradigm toward microbiome-targeting therapies.

Phosphorus-rich biochar (PBC) has been extensively studied due to its significant adsorption effect on U(VI). However, the release of phosphorus from PBC into solution decreases its adsorption performance and reusability and causes phosphorus pollution of water. In this study, Alcaligenes faecalis (A. faecalis) was loaded on PBC to produce a novel biocomposite (A/PBC). After adsorption equilibrium, phosphorus released into solution from PBC was 2.32 mg/L, while it decreased to 0.34 mg/L from A/PBC (p < 0.05). The U(VI) removal ratio of A/PBC reached nearly 100%, which is 13.08% higher than that of PBC (p < 0.05), and it decreased only by 1.98% after 5 cycles. When preparing A/PBC, A. faecalis converted soluble phosphate into insoluble metaphosphate minerals and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). And A. faecalis cells accumulated through these metabolites and formed biofilm attached to the PBC surface. The adsorption of metal cations on phosphate further contributed to phosphorus fixation in the biofilm. During U(VI) adsorption by A/PBC, A. faecalis synthesize EPS and metaphosphate minerals by using the internal components of PBC, thus increasing the abundance of acidic functional groups and promoting U(VI) adsorption. Hence, A/PBC can be a green and sustainable material for U(VI) removal from wastewater.

Manipulating spin polarization orientation is challenging but crucial for field-free spintronic devices. Although such manipulation has been demonstrated in a limited number of antiferromagnetic metal-based systems, the inevitable shunting effects from the metallic layer can reduce the overall device efficiency. In this study, we propose an antiferromagnetic insulator-based heterostructure NiO/Ta/Pt/Co/Pt for such spin polarization control without any shunting effect in the antiferromagnetic layer. We show that zero-field magnetization switching can be realized and is related to the out-of-plane component of spin polarization modulated by the NiO/Pt interface. The zero-field magnetization switching ratio can be effectively tuned by the substrates, in which the easy axis of NiO can be manipulated by the tensile or compressive strain from the substrates. Our work demonstrates that the insulating antiferromagnet based heterostructure is a promising platform to enhance the spin-orbital torque efficiency and achieve field-free magnetization switching, thus opening an avenue towards energy-efficient spintronic devices.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-related hepatotoxicity is a limitation for the continuation of chemotherapy in patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC). This prospective study determined the efficacy of tiopronin infusion in chemotherapy-induced hepatoxicity. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and fifty patients having advanced CRC treated with first-line palliative chemotherapy were included, of whom 86 were treated with mFOLFOX7 plus supplementation of tiopronin and 64 were treated with the same regimen without tiopronin. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total bilirubin (TBIL), gamma-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and albumin (ALB) were recorded before treatment and during every therapy cycle. In addition, course discontinuations, dose reductions, and chemotherapy efficacy were evaluated. RESULTS: The age and gender of the two groups were comparable (P >0.05). The proportions of abnormal mean ALT (P = 0.042), AST (P = 0.045), TBIL (P = 0.044) and ALB (P = 0.043) were significantly lower in the tiopronin group than the control group. Course discontinuations (P = 0.002), dose reductions (P = 0.005) and efficacy (P = 0.012) were significantly different between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the hepatoprotective drug played an important role in clinical outcome (OR = 6.837; 95% CI, 1.845 to 25.333; P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Tiopronin tends to decrease the incidence of chemotherapy-induced hepatoxicity, enhance patients' tolerance to mFOLFOX7 treatment, and even benefit the efficacy of chemotherapy.
