RESUMEN

As eusocial creatures, bees display unique macro collective behavior and local body dynamics that hold potential applications in various fields, such as computer animation, robotics, and social behavior. Unlike birds and fish, bees fly in a low-aligned zigzag pattern. Additionally, bees rely on visual cues for foraging and predator avoidance, exhibiting distinctive local body oscillations, such as body lifting, thrusting, and swaying. These inherent features pose significant challenges for realistic bee simulations in practical animation applications. In this paper, we present a bio-inspired model for bee simulations capable of replicating both macro collective behavior and local body dynamics of bees. Our approach utilizes a visually-driven system to simulate a bee's local body dynamics, incorporating obstacle perception and body rolling control for effective collision avoidance. Moreover, we develop an oscillation rule that captures the dynamics of the bee's local bodies, drawing on insights from biological research. Our model extends beyond simulating individual bees' dynamics; it can also represent bee swarms by integrating a fluid-based field with the bees' innate noise and zigzag motions. To fine-tune our model, we utilize pre-collected honeybee flight data. Through extensive simulations and comparative experiments, we demonstrate that our model can efficiently generate realistic low-aligned and inherently noisy bee swarms.

Obesity in individuals can have consequences ranging from metabolically healthy obesity to serious morbidities and reduce the quality and duration of life. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the role of abdominal drainage on postoperative complications after bariatric surgery. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched for eligible studies. The results revealed that abdominal drainage was associated with surgical complications, with a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 1.70 (P < .001), but not associated with wound infection (OR: 1.04; P = .762). Associations with surgical complications were mainly detected from retrospective cohort studies. The use of abdominal drainage showed associations with death (OR: 1.68; P < .001) and reoperation (OR: 1.49; P < .001). These findings revealed that abdominal drainage during bariatric surgery was associated with surgical complications, death, and reoperation. These results should be taken with caution since randomized controlled trials and retrospective studies were analyzed together.

Carpal navicular fractures are the most common carpal fractures. This study intends to explore the specific mechanism of Zoledronic Acid (ZA) in carpal navicular fracture healing via long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) growth arrest specificity 5 (GAS5) to mediate microRNA (miR)-29a-3p. A fractured rat model was constructed. Two weeks later, a subcutaneous injection of systemic ZA was implemented, and an injection of plasmid vectors interfered with GAS5 or miR-29a-3p expression was performed on the fracture site. Osteocalcin (OCN) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) were determined, as well as serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteopontin (OPN) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) and bone mineral density. MC3T3-E1 cells were transfected with plasmid vectors interfering with GAS5 or miR-29a-3p, and cell proliferation and apoptosis were analyzed. GAS5 and miR-29a-3p expression in fractured rats was tested, together with their binding relationship. ZA promoted OCN and BMP-2 expression, increased bone mineral density and serum levels of ALP, OPN and OPG in fractured rats. GAS5 was upregulated and miR-29a-3p was down-regulated in fractured rats. Downregulation of GAS5 or upregulation of miR-29a-3p further promoted bone healing in fractured rats. GAS5 targets miR-29a-3p, and down-regulation of miR-29a-3p can reverse the effect of down-regulation of GAS5 on bone healing in fractured rats. ZA promoted the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells and inhibited apoptosis by regulating the GAS5/miR-29a-3p axis. ZA regulates miR-29a-3p expression by down-regulating GAS5 to promote carpal navicular fracture healing, promote MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation, and inhibit cell apoptosis.

Most publications have focused on the cooling effect of urban inside water bodies. However, the climate adaptive characteristics of urban inside/outside water bodies is seldom studied. In this paper, three types of water bodies, i.e., urban inside water bodies, urban outside discrete water bodies and large water bodies are identified according to their relative spatial relationships with built-up areas. The climate adaptive landscape characteristics of water bodies are analyzed based on water bodies' cooling effect (WCE) inside and outside cities in the Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake regions. Seventy-three Landsat TM/OLI/TIRS images acquired from 1989 to 2019 are employed. Landscape scale characteristics of urban inside/outside water bodies are described by area, water depth, perimeter to area ratio (PARA) and distance-weighted area index (DWAI). Three temperature-related parameters are calculated to estimate the WCE in different conditions. Climate adaptive characteristics of water bodies inside/outside cities are determined by correlation and regression analysis. Results show that: 1) The long river shape, depth, orientation and fluidity of urban inside water bodies are benefit to enhance their cooling effect; 2) the distance of urban outside water bodies from built-up areas are positive correlated with their cooling effect; 3) the optimal acreage of large water bodies are >2500 km2 and 1111-1287.5 km2 for climate adaption of Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake, respectively. Simultaneously, the WCE of urban outside large water bodies is related with human activities and climate conditions. The results of our study provide a significant contribution to blue-space planning in cities, and provide insights into actionable climate adaption planning in inland large lake areas.

We report on charge state measurements of laser-accelerated carbon ions in the energy range of several MeV penetrating a dense partially ionized plasma. The plasma was generated by irradiation of a foam target with laser-induced hohlraum radiation in the soft x-ray regime. We use the tricellulose acetate (C_{9}H_{16}O_{8}) foam of 2 mg/cm^{3} density and 1 mm interaction length as target material. This kind of plasma is advantageous for high-precision measurements, due to good uniformity and long lifetime compared to the ion pulse length and the interaction duration. We diagnose the plasma parameters to be T_{e}=17 eV and n_{e}=4×10^{20} cm^{-3}. We observe the average charge states passing through the plasma to be higher than those predicted by the commonly used semiempirical formula. Through solving the rate equations, we attribute the enhancement to the target density effects, which will increase the ionization rates on one hand and reduce the electron capture rates on the other hand. The underlying physics is actually the balancing of the lifetime of excited states versus the collisional frequency. In previous measurement with partially ionized plasma from gas discharge and z pinch to laser direct irradiation, no target density effects were ever demonstrated. For the first time, we are able to experimentally prove that target density effects start to play a significant role in plasma near the critical density of Nd-glass laser radiation. The finding is important for heavy ion beam driven high-energy-density physics and fast ignitions. The method provides a new approach to precisely address the beam-plasma interaction issues with high-intensity short-pulse lasers in dense plasma regimes.

Background: The prognosis of middle-aged patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) treated by laparoscopic resection (LR) is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the survival outcomes of LR compared with open resection (OR) for middle-aged patients with CRC. Patients and Methods: This retrospective cohort study used the data from a database of all consecutive colorectal resections performed between January 2009 and December 2017. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to handle the selection bias based on age, gender, body mass index, tumour location, AJCC stage and admission year. Univariate and multivariate COX regression model was used to identify risk factors of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: After PSM, 154 patients were included in each group. Compared with the OR group in the total cohort, there were better survival outcomes in the LR group for 5-year OS and 5-year DFS (both P < 0.001). These differences were observed for Stage II and III diseases and for all CRC, irrespective of location. The multivariate analysis showed that tumour ≥5 cm (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.750, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.026-2.986, P = 0.040), Stage III (HR = 14.092, 95% CI: 1.894-104.848, P = 0.010) and LR (HR = 0.300, 95% CI: 0.160-0.560, P < 0.001) were independently associated with OS. Pre-operative carcinoembryonic antigen ≥5 ng/ml (HR = 3.954, 95% CI: 1.363-11.473, P = 0.011), Stage III (HR = 6.206, 95% CI: 1.470-26.200, P = 0.013) and LR (HR = 0.341, 95% CI: 0.178-0.653, P = 0.001) were independently associated with DFS. Conclusions: In middle-aged patients with CRC, LR achieves better survival than OR. Complications are similar, except for less blood loss and shorter post-surgical hospital stay with LR.

To date relatively few efforts have been made on the automatic generation of musical instrument playing animations. This problem is challenging due to the intrinsically complex, temporal relationship between music and human motion as well as the lacking of high quality music-playing motion datasets. In this article, we propose a fully automatic, deep learning based framework to synthesize realistic upper body animations based on novel guzheng music input. Specifically, based on a recorded audiovisual motion capture dataset, we delicately design a generative adversarial network (GAN) based approach to capture the temporal relationship between the music and the human motion data. In this process, data augmentation is employed to improve the generalization of our approach to handle a variety of guzheng music inputs. Through extensive objective and subjective experiments, we show that our method can generate visually plausible guzheng-playing animations that are well synchronized with the input guzheng music, and it can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods. In addition, through an ablation study, we validate the contributions of the carefully-designed modules in our framework.

RATIONALE: This study describes an 8-year-old boy with a C2 fracture and dislocation with a left C2-C3 articular process interlocking and spinal cord injury who underwent open reduction and internal fixation using the posterior cervical approach and achieved satisfactory results. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 8-year-old boy underwent an emergency transfer from a previous hospital after a car accident. DIAGNOSES: Axial fracture and dislocation with spinal cord injury (American Spinal Injury Association grade C), traumatic shock, brain contusion, intracranial hemorrhage, mandibular fracture, pulmonary contusion and hemorrhage, left vertebral artery stenosis, and multiple fractures throughout the body. Radiological examination revealed a fracture of the lower edge of the C2 vertebral body, fourth-degree anterior spondylolisthesis of the C2 vertebral body, interlocking of the left C2-C3 articular processes, widening of the C2-C3 vertebral space, and occlusion of the V1 and 2 segments of the left vertebral artery. INTERVENTIONS: The boy was immediately intubated and transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit for rescue treatment. However, the reduction was unsuccessful with 2 weeks of cranial traction. Thus, an open reduction was performed under general anesthesia. One month after the surgery, the boy was discharged from the hospital on foot after rehabilitation treatment. OUTCOMES: The boy was discharged from the hospital 1 month after surgery. At the 8-month follow-up, a radiological examination showed that the corrected C2 vertebral body fracture and dislocation were satisfactorily reduced, and the spinal cord was adequately decompressed. The internal fixation position was also good, and the spinal sequence had recovered well. In summary, except for the muscle strength of the right upper limb, which was slightly worse, the other clinical symptoms were significantly improved. LESSONS: In treating cervical fracture and dislocation with unilateral facet lock, the posterior open reduction of pedicle screw and lateral mass screw internal fixation achieved satisfactory results. Consequently, treating complex cervical spine injuries in children requires an accurate diagnosis and careful treatment strategy.

BACKGROUND: Recent tele-mentoring technologies for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) augments the operative field with movements of virtual surgical instruments as visual cues. The objective of this work is to assess different user-interfaces that effectively transfer mentor's hand gestures to the movements of virtual surgical instruments. METHODS: A user study was conducted to assess three different user-interface devices (Oculus-Rift, SpaceMouse, Touch Haptic device) under various scenarios. The devices were integrated with a MIS tele-mentoring framework for control of both manual and robotic virtual surgical instruments. RESULTS: The user study revealed that Oculus Rift is preferred during robotic scenarios, whereas the touch haptic device is more suitable during manual scenarios for tele-mentoring. CONCLUSION: A user-interface device in the form of a stylus controlled by fingers for pointing in 3D space is more suitable for manual MIS, whereas a user-interface that can be moved and oriented easily in 3D space by wrist motion is more suitable for robotic MIS.

BACKGROUND: Tele-mentoring during surgery facilitates the transfer of surgical knowledge from a mentor (specialist surgeon) to a mentee (operating surgeon). The aim of this work is to develop a tele-mentoring system tailored for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) where the mentor can remotely demonstrate to the mentee the required motion of the surgical instruments. METHODS: A remote tele-mentoring system is implemented that generates visual cues in the form of virtual surgical instrument motion overlaid onto the live view of the operative field. The technical performance of the system is evaluated in a simulated environment, where the operating room and the central location of the mentor were physically located in different countries and connected over the internet. In addition, a user study was performed to assess the system as a mentoring tool. RESULTS: On average, it took 260 ms to send a view of the operative field of 1920 × 1080 resolution from the operating room to the central location of the mentor and an average of 132 ms to receive the motion of virtual surgical instruments from the central location to the operating room. The user study showed that it is feasible for the mentor to demonstrate and for the mentee to understand and replicate the motion of surgical instruments. CONCLUSION: The work demonstrates the feasibility of transferring information over the internet from a mentor to a mentee in the form of virtual surgical instruments. Their motion is overlaid onto the live view of the operative field enabling real-time interactions between both the surgeons.

PURPOSE: This research presents findings from a qualitative exploration of the reactions of adolescents (12-14 years old) to navigating an exergame with an avatar created from multiple scans of the player (referred to as a self-representational avatar). METHODS: Post-gameplay interviews were conducted with adolescents following participation in a 20-min laboratory session (21.2 ± 0.8 min, mean ± SD) where the self-representational avatar was navigated through an exergame. Verbatim transcripts (n = 40) were coded and analyzed by 2 independent coders using hybrid thematic analysis for this secondary data analysis. Codes were reviewed to identify themes representing adolescents' reactions. RESULTS: Four themes emerged. Adolescents connected with their avatars and felt protective toward them, which influenced their actions in the exergame and contributed to their overall game enjoyment. CONCLUSION: Creating exergames navigated by a self-representational avatar was an enjoyable experience and influenced gameplay. Future research should explore the effect of this approach on gameplay frequency and intensity over time.

Realistic 3D facial modeling and animation have been increasingly used in many graphics, animation, and virtual reality applications. However, generating realistic fine-scale wrinkles on 3D faces, in particular, on animated 3D faces, is still a challenging problem that is far away from being resolved. In this article we propose an end-to-end system to automatically augment coarse-scale 3D faces with synthesized fine-scale geometric wrinkles. By formulating the wrinkle generation problem as a supervised generation task, we implicitly model the continuous space of face wrinkles via a compact generative model, such that plausible face wrinkles can be generated through effective sampling and interpolation in the space. We also introduce a complete pipeline to transfer the synthesized wrinkles between faces with different shapes and topologies. Through many experiments, we demonstrate our method can robustly synthesize plausible fine-scale wrinkles on a variety of coarse-scale 3D faces with different shapes and expressions.

BACKGROUND: Tele-mentoring facilitates the transfer of surgical knowledge. The objective of this work is to develop a tele-mentoring framework that enables a specialist surgeon to mentor an operating surgeon by transferring information in a form of surgical instruments' motion required during a minimally invasive surgery. METHOD: A tele-mentoring framework is developed to transfer video stream of the surgical field, poses of the scope and port placement from the operating room to a remote location. From the remote location, the motion of virtual surgical instruments augmented onto the surgical field is sent to the operating room. RESULTS: The proposed framework is suitable to be integrated with laparoscopic as well as robotic surgeries. It takes on average 1.56 s to send information from the operating room to the remote location and 0.089 s for vice versa over a local area network. CONCLUSIONS: The work demonstrates a tele-mentoring framework that enables a specialist surgeon to mentor an operating surgeon during a minimally invasive surgery.

This Letter demonstrates a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method to measure the fluence distribution of an intense short laser pulse based on the radiochromic effect. We discovered that an intense short laser pulse can induce the color reaction with a radiochromic film (RCF). Further, the net optical density of an irradiated RCF is proportional to the fluence of the incident laser pulse in a large range (${2 {-} 120}\;{{{\rm mJ}/{\rm cm}}^2}$). This method supports a large detection area up to near square-meter scale by splicing multi-pieces of RCFs (${8} \times 10\;{{\rm inch}^2}$ each). The spatial resolution reaches as high as 60 lines/mm. It offers a thin-film (${\sim}{100}\;{\unicode{x00B5}{\rm m}}$ thick), flexible, vacuum-compatible solution to intense short laser measurements, especially to laser facilities above petawatt, with beam sizes up to near square-meter scale, e.g., extreme light infrastructure.

INTRODUCTION: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is more aggressive than the most common papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the current research on FTC is less than PTC. Here, we investigated the effects of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) GAS5 and miR-221-3p in FTC. METHODS: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed to detect GAS5 and miR-221-3p expression in the FTC tissues and cells. Cell proliferation was assessed by CCK8 and EdU assays. Flow cytometry was performed to determine the cell cycle. The dual-luciferase reporter assay was employed to validate the binding relationship of GAS5/miR-221-3p and miR-221-3p/cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2B (CDKN2B). Western blot was conducted to measure the protein level of CDKN2B. RESULTS: Our results displayed that GAS5 was downregulated, while miR-221-3p was upregulated in FTC tissues and cells. What's more, overexpression of GAS5 or miR-221-3p inhibition induced G0/G1 phase arrest and inhibited cell proliferation of FTC cells. GAS5 acted as a sponge of miR-221-3p, and CDKN2B was a target gene of miR-221-3p. Additionally, GAS5 inhibited cell cycle and proliferation of FTC cells via reducing miR-221-3p expression to enhance CDKN2B expression. CONCLUSION: GAS5 induced G0/G1 phase arrest and inhibited cell proliferation via targeting miR-221-3p/CDKN2B axis in FTC. Thus, GAS5 may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of FTC.

Colon cancer is the third most common malignant tumor and its mortality rate ranks fourth among all malignant tumor types. Bioinformatics analysis has shown that GSPT1 is dysregulated in colon cancer and is associated with tumor progression. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. To address this research gap, we examined the impact of GSPT1 on cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion in vitro as well as tumor growth in vivo in colon cancer by using a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry, transwell migration assay, transwell invasion assay, and tumor xenograft model-based analysis, respectively. GSPT1 was significantly up-regulated in colon cancer tissues and cell lines. High GSPT1 expression was correlated with a larger tumor size. Depletion of GSPT1 suppressed cell proliferation, migration, and invasion-induced colon cancer cell apoptosis in vitro and restrained tumorigenicity in vivo in HCT116 colon cancer cells. Taken together, our findings suggest that the GSPT1/GSK pathway exerts tumor-promoting actions in colon cancer oncogenesis and progression. The GSPT1/GSK pathway may thus be an effective target for controlling colon cancer.

We present a system for designing indoor scenes with convertible furniture layouts. Such layouts are useful for scenarios where an indoor scene has multiple purposes and requires layout conversion, such as merging multiple small furniture objects into a larger one or changing the locus of the furniture. We aim at planning the motion for the convertible layouts of a scene with the most efficient conversion process. To achieve this, our system first establishes object-level correspondences between the layout of a given source and that of a reference to compute a target layout, where the objects are re-arranged in the source layout with respect to the reference layout. After that, our system initializes the movement paths of objects between the source and target layouts based on various mechanical constraints. A joint space-time optimization is then performed to program a control stream of object translations, rotations, and stops, under which the movements of all objects are efficient and the potential object collisions are avoided. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system through various design examples of multi-purpose, indoor scenes with convertible layouts.

Intense particle beams generated from the interaction of ultrahigh intensity lasers with sample foils provide options in radiography, high-yield neutron sources, high-energy-density-matter generation, and ion fast ignition. An accurate understanding of beam transportation behavior in dense matter is crucial for all these applications. Here we report the experimental evidence on one order of magnitude enhancement of intense laser-accelerated proton beam stopping in dense ionized matter, in comparison with the current-widely used models describing individual ion stopping in matter. Supported by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we attribute the enhancement to the strong decelerating electric field approaching 1 GV/m that can be created by the beam-driven return current. This collective effect plays the dominant role in the stopping of laser-accelerated intense proton beams in dense ionized matter. This finding is essential for the optimum design of ion driven fast ignition and inertial confinement fusion.

PURPOSE: The difference in prognosis between genders after abdominoperineal resection (APR) for low rectal cancer (LRC) is unclear. This study aimed to compare survival outcomes between genders in patients with LRC who underwent curative APR. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used a database of consecutive colorectal resections. Patients who received curative APR with LRC were grouped according to their gender. Female patients were frequency-matched 1:1 on American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage to male patients. Overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and their independent risk factors were examined. RESULTS: A total of 140 patients with APR for LRC were included after matching: 70 (50.0%) males and 70 (50.0%) females. No significant differences were found between the groups in terms of age, operation methods, AJCC stage, and adjuvant therapy (all P > 0.05). Median follow-up was 39 (range: 3-128) months. Male gender was independently associated with worse OS (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 2.755, 95% CI: 1.507-5.038, P = 0.001) and worse DFS (adjusted HR = 2.440, 95% CI: 1.254-4.746, P = 0.009). Subgroup analysis revealed that female patients with stage III disease had better OS (P = 0.001) and DFS (P < 0.001) than male patients. CONCLUSION: Gender affects survival after a curative APR for LRC. Compared with females, male patients with LRC after curative APR had worse prognosis, especially for stage III disease.

INTRODUCTION: Estrogen receptor α (ERα) plays important roles in the etiology of osteoarthritis (OA), in which cartilage degradation and cellular inflammation are involved. MiR-203 is reported to direct target ERα, but its roles in chondrocytes remain uncovered. METHODS: In this study, ELISA showed that the level of estrogen hormone in the serum of postmenopausal OA patients was significantly lower than the one in patients without OA. RT-PCR revealed that the expression level of miR-203 was significantly up-regulated in the OA patients. Furthermore, western blotting demonstrated the lower expression levels of aggrecan, Col2A1, and ERα in the isolated articular cartilage tissues of OA patients. To decipher the association between ERα and miR-203 in the pathogenesis of OA, IL-1ß stimulated cultured chondrocyte cell model was established to measure the cell viability, cellular inflammation, cell injury, as well as cartilage degradation with miR-203 inhibitor and ERα. RESULTS: The results showed that IL-1ß stimulation induced the expression of miR-203, which promoted cellular inflammation and cell injury, and caused down-regulation of aggrecan and Col2A1. Luciferase assay indicated the direct binding between miR-203 and ERα, and ERα-specific SiRNA inversed the protective role of miR-203 inhibitor in the progression of OA in the cell system. CONCLUSIONS: MiR-203 is critical in the onset and progression of OA, at least in part, caused by estrogen deficiency and ERα instability in OA patients, providing a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of OA.
