RESUMEN

Radiation imaging is extensively applied in nuclear industry for various purposes including fuel characterization. Accurate quantitative evaluation of these radiographic images is difficult by the existing manual process and therefore image analytical methods have been attempted. The method of wavelet transform analysis has been applied on Gamma autoradiography (GAR) images of experimental (U, Pu)O2 mixed oxide (MOX) fuel pins with the objective to investigate the effectiveness of the method for fuel homogeneity characterization. The method was found effective to carry out quantified estimations of size and relative plutonium concentration of the heterogeneous portions in the fuel. The results were validated with theoretically simulated results as practical standards and calibrations are not possible in these samples. The results of wavelet transformation analysis were found to be more accurate with reference to the theoretically simulated values in comparison with conventional pixel analysis applied on the original GAR images.

Goltz-Gorlin syndrome is a rare X-linked inherited disorder associated with PORCN (porcupine homolog-Drosophila) gene mutation. It primarily affects the skin and its appendages. The characteristic cutaneous features include a blaschko-linear pattern, skin atrophy, pigmentary changes, and telangiectasia. The oral manifestations have been reported in more than half of the affected individuals. The most common oral findings include enamel hypoplasia, hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, microdontia, vertical grooving of the teeth, taurodontism, fusion, and abnormal root morphology reported in sporadic cases. The objective of this case report is to describe the dentofacial characteristics of a middle childhood aged girl with Goltz-Gorlin syndrome.

RESUMEN

Single-cell analysis (SCA) improves the detection of cancer, the immune system, and chronic diseases from complicated biological processes. SCA techniques generate high-dimensional, innovative, and complex data, making traditional analysis difficult and impractical. In the different cell types, conventional cell sequencing methods have signal transformation and disease detection limitations. To overcome these challenges, various deep learning techniques (DL) have outperformed standard state-of-the-art computer algorithms in SCA techniques. This review discusses DL application in SCA and presents a detailed study on improving SCA data processing and analysis. Firstly, we introduced fundamental concepts and critical points of cell analysis techniques, which illustrate the application of SCA. Secondly, various effective DL strategies apply to SCA to analyze data and provide significant results from complex data sources. Finally, we explored DL as a future direction in SCA and highlighted new challenges and opportunities for the rapidly evolving field of single-cell omics.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Individuals with special healthcare needs (SHCN) are more likely to sustain traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) due to distinct risk factors. The aim of this review was to assess various risk factors associated with TDIs in individuals with SHCN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The protocol was designed according to the recommendations of the Cochrane-handbook, Joanna Briggs Institute, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022357422). A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, LILACS, Web of Science, EMBASE and Scopus using a pre-defined strategy without any limitation of language and year of publication. It was last updated on 25 April 2023. Studies addressing the TDIs in individuals with SHCN were included. Data extraction and analyses were performed, risk of bias (ROB) assessment was done using the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool, and a meta-analysis was performed using random-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 21 studies were included in the review. They were categorized according to the target disease/condition: cerebral palsy (n = 5), ADHD and autism spectrum disorders (n = 5), visually impaired (n = 4), and multiple disorders (n = 7). The studies showed variability in the design and methods; however, 17 out of 21 studies showed moderate to low ROB. Increased overjet and lip incompetence were the main risk factors reported in the studies. The commonest injuries were observed to be enamel and enamel and dentine fractures. CONCLUSION: The overall pooled prevalence of TDI in individuals with special healthcare needs was 23.16% with 20.98% in males and 27.06% in females. Overjet >3 mm and inadequate lip coverage were found to be associated with a higher risk of TDI in all the categories of individuals with special healthcare needs except ADHD and ASD. Falls at home in cerebral palsy, falls while walking and self-harm in ADHD and ASD, falls at home and collision in visual impairment, and unspecified falls in multiple disorders could be identified as the most common cause of TDI.

Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) also known as Cranio-skeletal dysplasia is a rare genetic disorder of bone metabolism. It is mainly characterized by acro-osteolysis and generalized osteoporosis. The other distinctive features include a dysmorphic face, short stature, aplasia of facial sinuses, and persistent cranial sutures. Although the condition begins to manifest since birth, the characteristic features become more prominent with age. This syndrome is usually recognized by dentists due to these craniofacial abnormalities. This case report aims to highlight a case of 6-year-old girl HCS who presented with aberrant facial features, premature exfoliation of teeth, unusual mobility of teeth and atypical root resorption in primary dentition.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is an important public health issue in India. This study was performed to determine the impact of acupuncture at the GB39, BL17, and LR13 points on hemoglobin levels, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and red cell distribution width (RDW) in people with IDA. One hundred women with IDA were randomly allocated to the acupuncture group (AG) or placebo control group (PCG). For 30 minutes per day, daily for 2 weeks, the AG received acupuncture at GB39, BL17, and LR13, while the PCG received needling at non-acupuncture points. Outcomes were assessed before and after the intervention. We found a significant increase (p < 0.001) in hemoglobin level (AG 10.39-11.38 g/dl, effect size 0.785; PCG 10.58-10.40 g/dl, effect size 0.191), MCH (AG 25.69-27.50 fl, effect size 0.418; PCG 27.43-27.23 fl, effect size 0.058), and RDW (AG 15.12-16.41 fl, effect size 0.626; PCG 14.91-14.94 fl, effect size 0.017) in the AG compared to the PCG. Results suggest that needling at the GB39, BL17, and LR13 acupuncture points is more effective in treating people with IDA than needling at non-acupuncture points.

Efforts in cancer immunotherapy aim to counteract evasion mechanisms and stimulate the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells effectively. Combination therapies that target multiple aspects of immune evasion are being investigated to enhance the overall efficacy of cancer immunotherapy. PD-1 (Programmed Cell Death Protein 1), CTLA-4 (Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Antigen 4), LAG-3 (Lymphocyte-Activation Gene 3), and TIM-3 (T Cell Immunoglobulin and Mucin Domain-Containing Protein3) are all immune checkpoint receptors that play crucial roles in regulating the immune response and maintaining self-tolerance often exploited by cancer cells to evade immune surveillance. Antibodies targeted against immune checkpoint inhibitors such as anti-PD-1 antibodies (e.g., pembrolizumab, nivolumab), anti-CTLA-4 antibodies (e.g., Ipilimumab), and experimental drugs targeting LAG-3 and TIM-3, aim to block these interactions and unleash the immune system's ability to recognise and destroy cancer cells. The US FDA has approved different categories of immune checkpoint inhibitors that have been utilised successfully in some patients with metastatic melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, head and neck cancers, and non-small lung cancer. Although several immune checkpoint inhibitor antibodies have been developed, they exhibited immune-related adverse effects, resulting in hypophysitis, diabetes, and neurological issues. These adverse effects of antibodies can be reduced by developing aptamer against the target. Aptamers offer several advantages over traditional antibodies, such as improved specificity, reduced immunogenicity, and flexible design for reduced adverse effects that specifically target and block protein-protein or receptor-ligand interactions involved in immune checkpoint pathways. The current study aims to review the function of particular immune checkpoint inhibitors along with developed aptamer-mediated antitumor cytotoxicity in cancer treatment.

We previously reported that chitosan nanoparticle-encapsulated Naringenin (CS-NPs/NAR) could scavenge free radicals at lower doses and be cytotoxic to cancer cells. The current study continues to focus on the mechanism behind CS-NPs/NAR-induced breast cancer cell (MDA-MB-231) death. MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with higher concentrations (100, 200, and 200 µg) of Chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs), naringenin (NAR), and chitosan-encapsulated naringenin (CS-NPs/NAR). The cell viability, proliferation, and oxidative stress parameters, such as nitric oxide [NO], xanthine oxidase (XOD), and xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) levels, were analyzed. ROS levels were determined through DCFDA analysis. MTT-based cell cytotoxicity and BrdU cell proliferation analysis depicted the cytotoxicity effects (37% and 29% for 24 and 48 h) and exhibited a reduction in the proliferation of MDA-MB-231 by CS-NPs/NAR. A significant increase in NO content, XOD, a decrease in XDH, and an increase in ROS levels were observed upon treatment with CS-NPs/NAR. Fluorescent images suggested the increase in the ROS level upon treatment with CS-NPs/NAR in cancer cells, and the results suggested that it could induce apoptosis. Further, to confirm this, the activity of caspase-3 was analyzed through western blotting, and the result suggested that the higher concentration of CS-NPs/NAR has increased the activation of procaspase3 when compared to free NAR. Hence, the current investigation concludes that high doses of CS-NPs/NAR induce and increase oxidative stress and so increased activation of procaspase3 may lead to cancer cell apoptosis and reduction in cell proliferation.

Background: Autoimmune connective tissue diseases (AICTD) present with a myriad of clinical manifestations, including cutaneous. These disorders occur because of immune dysregulation that produces autoantibodies targeting connective tissue and internal organs. Screening these autoantibodies not only aids in the diagnosis but also in predicting specific organ involvement and the risk of complications related to the disease. Aims: This study was conducted (a) to study various cutaneous and systemic manifestations of AICTD, (b) to study the antinuclear antibody (ANA) profile and (c) to determine the association between systemic manifestations and antinuclear antibodies. Methodology: Thirty cases of autoimmune connective tissue disease were recruited for the study. A physical examination, clinical profile and ANA profile were done. Results: Nonscarring alopecia (83.3%) was the commonest cutaneous manifestation noted, followed by photosensitivity (73.3%). The most common system affected was musculoskeletal (67%), followed by renal (40%). Anti-dsDNA antibodies were significantly associated with musculoskeletal involvement (85%) with a P value of 0.038 and anti-Sm antibodies with neurological involvement (87%), followed by renal involvement (75%) with a P value of 0.018 and 0.001, respectively. Anti-SCL 70 antibodies were significantly associated with lung involvement (75%), with a P value of 0.009 and the presence of anti-SS-A antibodies with cardiovascular involvement (40%) with a P value of 0.014. Conclusion: Antinuclear antibodies are diagnostic as well as prognostic biomarkers for AICTD and contribute to precision medicine. These antibodies serve as markers to pursue involvement of organs, which in turn helps the treating physician to choose appropriate preventive measures.

Background Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a multi-step process. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an important step in the progression of OSCC. One of the components that influence EMT is E-cadherin. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of E-cadherin in oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), various grades of epithelial dysplasia, OSCC, and to compare it with the expression in the normal mucosa. Material and methods E-cadherin immunohistochemical detection was done using a monoclonal antibody of clone EP-6TM and the PolyExcel HRP/DAB chromogen detection system. A total of 100 samples, were divided into four groups, which included epithelial dysplasia (group 2) (30 cases), oral submucous fibrosis (group 3) (OSMF-30 cases), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (group 4) (OSCC-30 cases), which was compared with normal mucosa (group 1) (10 cases). The positive control used for E-cadherin was ductal breast carcinoma. Results All the cases of normal mucosa, epithelial dysplasia, and OSMF showed positivity for E-cadherin expression. In OSCC, 97% of cases expressed E-cadherin except one case. Out of 30 cases of epithelial dysplasia, 53% of mild epithelial dysplasia had a moderate intensity of expression and 75% had a mild intensity of E-cadherin expression. In moderately differentiated OSCC, 82% of cases showed mild intensity. Tissue localization of the E-cadherin stain in the basal layer decreased from normal mucosa to grades of epithelial dysplasia and OSCC. The pattern of E-cadherin staining in all the cases of group I, group II, and group III was membranous. In 97% of OSCC cases, both membranous and cytoplasmic staining were seen. Conclusion E-cadherin expression was reduced in increasing grades of epithelial dysplasia, OSCC, and OSMF compared to that of normal mucosa. E-cadherin expression is reduced as the lesions progress to malignancy. Hence, E-cadherin can be considered a surrogate marker of malignancy.

This article presents a comprehensive dataset extracted from published annual, sustainability and integrated reports, focusing on environmental (GRI300) and social (GRI400) disclosures, for the top 100 Malaysian public listed companies (based on Market Capitalization as of 31 December 2016). The dataset covers three years (2018 to 2020) with 300 firm-year observations. Environmental and Social disclosure scores were calculated using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework and derived from the content analysis of the companies' reports accessed from respective corporate or Bursa Malaysia's websites. A binary scoring method (one for disclosure or zero, otherwise for each environmental and social disclosure item) was employed. This scoring process underwent three stages of rigorous manual verification protocol: initial check and scoring by research assistants, review by the research team, and a final review by an independent external accounting firm for validation. This dataset is valuable for academics, practitioners, and policymakers to evaluate corporate alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #12, encouraging Responsible Consumption and Production, and shape strategic policies to meet Bursa compliance for enhanced corporate sustainability. It further aids in investigating associations between governance factors and other firm characteristics with environmental and social disclosures.

Socio-ecological determinants of high myopia incidence among school students largely remain unexplored, especially in developing countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural schools in North India to assess the relationship between these determinants and myopia among adolescent students. A public health nurse used a pre-tested questionnaire (demographics, family ocular status, and screen time) and Snellen's chart for testing visual acuity, and referred suspected cases for cycloplegic refraction assessment. Among the total of 955 students, the median (range) age was 14 (13-15) years. The prevalence of myopia was 5.03% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.99-5.07). Myopia was found to be associated with computer usage at school (P = 0.058), malnutrition (P = 0.001), and familial myopia (P = 0.079) in the bivariate analysis. Significant predictors of myopia in the regression model were females (odd ratio [OR]: 6.29; 95% CI: 2.69-14.72), higher maternal age (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1-1.17), and reading distance <20 cm (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 1.01-3.87).

Background: Papillary fibroelastomas (PFEs) are uncommon primary cardiac tumours and their recurrence after resection is rare. Case summary: A 32-year-old woman, who was evaluated for recurrent embolic stroke, was found to have lesions on mitral leaflets on echocardiography. The mitral leaflets were otherwise normal with no clinical or laboratory evidence of infective endocarditis. Transthoracic, as well as transesophageal echocardiography, revealed masses on mitral leaflets, which remained almost the same over 3 years. A tentative diagnosis of PFE on the mitral valve was made. She had undergone intra-cardiac excision of mitral valve mass along with ring annuloplasty in February 2020. In November 2021, during her regular follow-up visit, transthoracic echocardiography revealed the recurrence of the masses on mitral leaflets with severe mitral regurgitation. She underwent mitral valve replacement and excision of tumour masses. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of recurrent PFE. Discussion: Recurrence of PFEs is rare. We report a rare case of histologically proven recurrence of PFE of the mitral valve. This highlights the importance of routine post-operative echocardiographic follow-up in patients with PFE.

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that impairs a person's thinking capacity, feelings and emotions, behavioural traits, etc., Emotional distortions, delusions, hallucinations, and incoherent speech are all some of the symptoms of schizophrenia, and cause disruption of routine activities. Computer-assisted diagnosis of schizophrenia is significantly needed to give its patients a higher quality of life. Hence, an improved adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system based on the Hybrid Grey Wolf-Bat Algorithm for accurate prediction of schizophrenia from multi-channel EEG signals is presented in this study. The EEG signals are pre-processed using a Butterworth band pass filter and wICA initially, from which statistical, time-domain, frequency-domain, and spectral features are extracted. Discriminating features are selected using the ReliefF algorithm and are then forwarded to ANFIS for classification into either schizophrenic or normal. ANFIS is optimized by the Hybrid Grey Wolf-Bat Algorithm (HWBO) for better efficiency. The method is experimented on two separate EEG datasets-1 and 2, demonstrating an accuracy of 99.54% and 99.35%, respectively, with appreciable F1-score and MCC. Further experiments reveal the efficiency of the Hybrid Wolf-Bat algorithm in optimizing the ANFIS parameters when compared with traditional ANFIS model and other proven algorithms like genetic algorithm-ANFIS, particle optimization-ANFIS, crow search optimization algorithm-ANFIS and ant colony optimization algorithm-ANFIS, showing high R2 value and low RSME value. To provide a bias free classification, tenfold cross validation is performed which produced an accuracy of 97.8% and 98.5% on the two datasets respectively. Experimental outcomes demonstrate the superiority of the Hybrid Grey Wolf-Bat Algorithm over the similar techniques in predicting schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic and its prevention and control policies have impacted maternal and child health (MCH) services. This study documents the challenges faced by patients in accessing MCH services, and the experiences of health care providers in delivering those services during the COVID-19 outbreak, explicitly focusing on the lockdown period in India. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (rapid survey) was conducted in 18 districts from 6 states of India during March to June, 2020. The sample size included 540 MCH patients, 18 gynaecologists, 18 paediatricians, 18 district immunisation officers and 108 frontline health workers. Bivariate analysis and multivariable analysis were used to assess the association between sociodemographic characteristics, and challenges faced by the patients. RESULTS: More than one-third of patients (n = 212; 39%) reported that accessing MCH services was a challenge during the lockdown period, with major challenges being transportation-related difficulties (n = 99; 46%) unavailability of hospital-based services (n = 54; 23%) and interrupted outreach health services (n = 39; 18.4%). The supply-side challenges mainly included lack of infrastructural preparedness for outbreak situations, and a shortage of human resources. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS: A holistic approach is required that focuses on both preparedness and response to the outbreak, as well reassignment and reinforcement of health care professionals to continue catering to and maintaining essential MCH services during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Universally, the most predominant cause of female mortality is mainly due to breast cancer. Owing to numerous constraints in the existing imaging technique, researchers are trying out an alternative tool to detect the tumor before going to the miserable stage. METHODS: This article presents a novel method to detect the mean value system for detecting the location of the tumor in different depths by shifting the antenna anywhere in the breast tissue. In addition, an algorithm to reconstruct the breast image, namely Delay-Multiply-and-Sum (DMAS) is followed to identify the tumor implanted in the breast tissue. RESULTS: The analysis shows that the maximum mean value occurs while the antenna moves very near to the tumor while the mean value reduces while the antenna shifts apart from the tumor location. The mean value in different locations is converted into a microwave image. The high intensity in the image exhibits the precise position of the tumor. This technique can identify the location of early-stage tumor of size 3mm. Multiple tumors of sizes 6mm and 7mm can identify at a depth of 12mm and 18mm in the homogeneous breast phantom. DMAS can provide better imaging results in the early stage tumor of size 3mm embedded in the breast phantom. CONCLUSION: Microwave imaging is an efficient technique to differentiate healthy and malignant tissue in the breast. Antenna plays a major role in identifying tumors in the breast in the early stage. Hence a high-performance Ultra Wideband Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA-UWB) is used to identify the tumor in the breast. An antenna is sketched in different locations of the breast phantom. On account of the hemispherical structure, the mean value of the reflected signal is high at the center than at the edge. Hence, the difference in mean value is calculated with and without breast phantom for identifying the tumor location. The overall efficiency of this technique can be improved by using a high-performance UWB antenna. The image of the breast is reformed by the DMAS beamforming algorithm.

Lung cancer is the most devastating cause of death among all cancers worldwide, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 80% of all the lung cancer cases. Beyond common genetic research and epigenomic studies, the extraordinary investigations of non-coding RNAs have provided insights into the molecular basis of cancer. Existing evidence from various cancer models highlights that the regulation of non-coding RNAs is crucial and that their deregulation may be a common reason for the development and progression of cancer, and competition of cancer therapeutics. Non-coding RNAs, such as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), are increasingly recognized as potential cancer biomarkers for early detection and application of therapeutic strategies. The miRNAs have gained importance as master regulators of target mRNAs by negatively regulating their expression. The lncRNAs function as both tumor suppressors and oncogenes, and also compete with miRNAs that influence the translational inhibition processes. This review addresses the role of lncRNAs in lung cancer development, highlights their mechanisms of action, and provides an overview of the impact of lncRNAs on lung cancer survival and progression via miRNA sponging. The improved understanding of lung cancer mechanisms has opened opportunities to analyze molecular markers and their potential therapeutics.

The clinical presentation of MIS-C overlaps with other infectious/non-infectious diseases such as acute COVID-19, Kawasaki disease, acute dengue, enteric fever, and systemic lupus erythematosus. We examined the ex-vivo cellular parameters with the aim of distinguishing MIS-C from other syndromes with overlapping clinical presentations. MIS-C children differed from children with non-MIS-C conditions by having increased numbers of naïve CD8+ T cells, naïve, immature and atypical memory B cells and diminished numbers of transitional memory, stem cell memory, central and effector memory CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, classical, activated memory B and plasma cells and monocyte (intermediate and non-classical) and dendritic cell (plasmacytoid and myeloid) subsets. All of the above alterations were significantly reversed at 6-9 months post-recovery in MIS-C. Thus, MIS-C is characterized by a distinct cellular signature that distinguishes it from other syndromes with overlapping clinical presentations. Objective: To assess factors associated with COVID-19 stigmatizing attitudes in the community and stigma experiences of COVID-19 recovered individuals during first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in India. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 18 districts located in 7 States in India during September 2020 to January 2021 among adults > 18 years of age selected through systematic random sampling. Data on socio demographic and COVID-19 knowledge were collected from 303 COVID-19 recovered and 1,976 non-COVID-19 infected individuals from community using a survey questionnaire. Stigma was assessed using COVID-19 Stigma Scale and Community COVID-19 Stigma Scale developed for the study. Informed consent was sought from the participants. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis were conducted. Results: Half of the participants (51.3%) from the community reported prevalence of severe stigmatizing attitudes toward COVID-19 infected while 38.6% of COVID-19 recovered participants reported experiencing severe stigma. Participants from the community were more likely to report stigmatizing attitudes toward COVID-19 infected if they were residents of high prevalent COVID-19 zone (AOR: 1.5; CI: 1.2-1.9), staying in rural areas (AOR: 1.5; CI:1.1-1.9), belonged to the age group of 18-30 years (AOR: 1.6; CI 1.2-2.0), were male (AOR: 1.6; CI: 1.3-1.9), illiterate (AOR: 2.7; CI: 1.8-4.2), or living in Maharashtra (AOR: 7.4; CI: 4.8-11.3). COVID-19 recovered participants had higher odds of experiencing stigma if they had poor knowledge about COVID-19 transmission (AOR: 2.8; CI: 1.3-6.3), were staying for 6-15 years (AOR: 3.24; CI: 1.1-9.4) in the current place of residence or belonged to Delhi (AOR: 5.3; CI: 1.04-26.7). Conclusion: Findings indicated presence of stigmatizing attitudes in the community as well as experienced stigma among COVID-19 recovered across selected study sites in India during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Study recommends timely dissemination of factual information to populations vulnerable to misinformation and psychosocial interventions for individuals affected by stigma.
