RESUMEN

The mitotic and pyknotic indices were counted in the local germinative zones of Ammon's horn and dentate gyrus of normal mice from embryonic day 18 (ED 18) to postnatal day 60 (PD 60). The local germinative zone of Ammon's horn (the suprafimbrial zone) forms from ED 16 but the first pyknoses appear in it from ED 20. After a rapid increase of the mitotic and pyknotic indices with a maximum reached on PD 3 there is a sharp decrease of their values corresponding to the reduction of the suprafimbrial zone. The local germinative zone of the dentate gyrus is generated from ED 14, however pyknoses appear from PD 1. The greatest values of the mitotic and pyknotic indices fall within PD 3. Later on the values of both indices gradually decrease, however, they are sufficiently pronounced even on PD 60. It is suggested that the mitotic death by means of pyknotic degeneration is connected with elimination of the spontaneous mutations of glial precursors in the germinative zones of the brain.

RESUMEN

A significant decrease in the rate of cell entering into mitosis was discovered in exocrine cells of the pancreas and in liver parenchymal cells of 7-day-old rats after colchamine injections at varying times of day. These data indicate that the colchamine method should not be applied to the assessment of mitosis duration and cell proliferation rates in animal tissues.

RESUMEN

A significant increase in the mean mitotic indices was found after adrenaline injection (2 micrograms/g) in the corneal epithelium of rat fetuses and in rats aged 3 to 4 days. This was accompanied by an appreciable rise in the number of metaphases, anatelophases and nucleus reconstruction, leading to an increase (by 3.7 times in fetuses; by 2.4 and 2 times in 3- and 4-day-old rats, respectively) in relative mitosis duration as compared to control animals. By the 10th day of postnatal development the differences in the magnitudes of the mitotic indices and relative mitosis duration completely disappeared. The method for appraising the relative duration of mitosis that occurs in response to varying exposures bases on a comparative analysis of the frequency of different mitotic phases was called "the time course of mitotic phases".

RESUMEN

Significant suppression of the entry of leukemic spleen cells in mitosis was found to be produced by the administration of colchamin (5 mg/kg) to mice with transplanted leukemia La. These data allow a conclusion that the duration of mitosis and the rate of mitotic activity in tissues cannot be determined by the colchamin method.

RESUMEN

Significant retardation of cell entering the division cycle before prophase was recorded in the tongue epithelium and exocrine cells of the pancreas after colchamine injection (4 mg/kg) to mice. The retardation occurs rather in the evening and night hours. Almost complete supression of cell entering mitosis and presumably delayed course of cell division were observed in liver parenchymal cells as a result of colchamine injection at the same hours. The data obtained call in question the feasibility of the colchamine method for determining mitosis duration in bodily tissues.
