RESUMEN

Background and aim: Baneh (Pistacia atlantica) is a plant species that is commonly consumed as food and has a long-standing traditional use as a sexual enhancer. Despite its widespread use, a limited amount of academic and scientific literature is available regarding its potential impact on the reproductive system. The present research aimed to study the effect of a diet enriched with Baneh on the female rats' reproductive system. Experimental procedure: Three groups of rats (n = 8) were subjected to the intended diet for six weeks. Subsequently, their histomorphometric parameters, sex hormone levels, as well as the expression of oxytocin (OXT) and oxytocin receptor (OXTR) genes were measured. The rats' serum vitamin D, zinc, and lipid profiles were also evaluated. Results and conclusion: Results revealed that compared to the normal food, the diet containing 20 % Baneh significantly increased the progesterone and estradiol levels three and two times, respectively. It decreased the total body weight while increasing the ratio of ovary weight to the body weight. Furthermore, the Baneh-enriched diet raised HDL, zinc, and vitamin D levels, though it reduced the LDL and TG levels by 15 µg/dl and 24 µg/dl, respectively, and the concentration of ovary malondialdehyde decreased by 50 % in the treated group. Also, the diet increased the follicle graph, corpus luteum, the thickness of the epithelium, the number of endometrial glands, and the expression of both OXT and OXTR genes. Our findings suggested that P. atlantica could considerably improve the female sex hormone levels and their reproductive system.

OBJECTIVE: Orofacial pain with high prevalence is one of the substantial human health issues. The importance of this matter became more apparent when it was revealed that orofacial pain, directly and indirectly, affects cognition performances. Currently, researchers have focused on investigating pharmaceutics to alleviate pain and ameliorate its subsequent cognitive impairments. DESIGN: In this study, the rats were first treated with the central administration of methyl jasmonate (MeJA), which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bio-compound. After 20 min, orofacial pain was induced in the rats by the injection of capsaicin in their dental pulp. Subsequently, the animals' pain behaviors were analyzed, and the effects of pain and MeJA treatments on rats learning and memory were evaluated/compared using the Morris water maze (MWM) test. In addition, the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-1ß, BDNF, and COX-2 genes in the rats' hippocampus was evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Experiencing orofacial pain resulted in a significant decline in the rats learning and memory. However, the central administration of 20 µg/rat of MeJA effectively mitigated these impairments. In the MWM, the performance of the MeJA-treated rats showed a two- to threefold improvement compared to the nontreated ones. Moreover, in the hippocampus of pain-induced rats, the expression of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1ß, and COX-2 significantly increased, whereas the BDNF expression decreased. In contrast, MeJA downregulated the pro-inflammatory factors and upregulated the BDNF by more than 50%. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the notable antinociceptive potential of MeJA and its ability to inhibit pain-induced learning and memory dysfunction through its anti-inflammatory effect.

The present study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective activity of the black peel pomegranate extract, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) biosynthesized using the extract. We pretreated the human neuroblastoma SH-SY5 cells with the extract and AgNPs and evaluated the neuroprotective activity of these agents against methamphetamine (Meth) cytotoxicity. The NPs were spherical with 19 ± 8 nm size, - 28 mV surface charge, and 0.20 PDI. Meth killed the cells by increasing proapoptotic (Bax, PTEN, AKT, PI3K, NF-κB, P53, TNF-α, Cyt C, and Cas 3) and decreasing the antiapoptotic genes (Bcl-2) expression. Exposure to Meth caused DNA fragmentation and increased the intercellular ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels while reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). A 4-h pretreatment of the cells with the extract and AgNPs could retain the viability of the cells above 80% by increasing the Bcl-2 expression up to fourfold and inhibiting the cell death pathways. ROS, MDA, and MMP levels in the pretreated cells were close to the control group. The percentage of necrosis in cells pretreated with the extract and AgNPs declined to 32% and 8%, respectively. Our promising findings indicated that AgNPs could reduce Meth-induced oxidative stress and prevent necrotic and apoptotic cell death by regulating related genes' expression.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic stress is considered a severe risk factor leading to various disorders, including anxiety and cognitive decline. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Origanum vulgare (oregano) extract on improving anxiety-like behavior and learning and memory defection caused by chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). METHOD: A 10-day CUS protocol was executed on male rats, and on day 10, their anxiety, learning, and memory status were evaluated. After that, in addition to the CUS, the rats were treated with the oregano extract for 2 weeks. Then, the expression of BDNF, TrkB, and TLR2/4 genes in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of the rats was evaluated. Also, the liver- and kidney-related serum parameters, including triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, creatinine, urea, serum glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase were assessed. Further, the extract's lethal effect and its impact on animals' body weight were investigated. RESULTS: Behavioral tests confirmed the anxiety-like behavior and learning-memory function impairment caused by CUS. In contrast, the administration of the extract could significantly alleviate the mental deficiencies and diminished anxiety-like behaviors. Molecular assessments showed that CUS could markedly decrease the BDNF and TrkB genes' expression levels while increasing that of TLR2 and TLR4. In contrast, in extract-treated animals, mRNA levels of BDNF and TrkB considerably increased, yet TLR2 and TLR4 mRNA levels reduced. Additionally, consumption of the extract caused weight gain, while having no lethality and detrimental effect on the liver and kidneys functions. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate the anxiolytic properties of the extract and its improving effect on cognitive dysfunction.

Background and aim: Alongside the advancement of various modern treatments, attention has recently been focused on finding alternative infertility treatments based on diet and herbal medicine. Pistacia atlantica (wild pistachio; Baneh) is a plant species traditionally known as a libido booster and sexual enhancer. Experimental procedure: The study aim was to evaluate the effects of a P. atlantica-enriched diet on the functions of the reproductive system of male rats. Results and conclusion: Results revealed that the diet containing 20% P. atlantica doubled testosterone levels in the treatment group compared to the control. It decreased the total bodyweight, while significantly increased the ratios of the seminal vesicles, testis, and epididymis to the bodyweight of rats. The sperm count in the treatment group was 4.8 × 106/mL, which was significantly more than the control group (4.2 × 106/mL). Furthermore, the utilization of P. atlantica significantly raised HDL levels, though it reduced the LDL and TG levels and the concentration of testis MDA. Concerning other factors, the 20% of P. atlantica considerably increased the serum level of Zinc and vitamin D. Histomorphometric analysis revealed that the diet increased the testicular capsule thickness, whereas it did not cause any significant change in the diameter of the seminiferous tubule, the number of Leydig cells, and Sertoli cells. Additionally, the repopulation index, tubular differentiation index, and spermiogenesis index increased in the treatment group. Molecular analysis showed that the prescribed diet increased the expression of both oxytocin (OXT) and its receptor (OXTR) genes, improving the reproductive system function.
