RESUMEN

Charged microdroplets are favored in microfluidic control, biomedicine, chemistry and materials processing due to their unique physicochemical environment, including interface double layers, high electric fields, surface concentration enrichment, and more. Herein, we investigated the crystallization of charged sodium chloride microdroplets and achieved the formation of hollow single crystals in a single-step process lasting only a few seconds, without the use of templates. Additionally, we discussed the plausible crystal growth mechanism, which appears to be an unconventional outward-inward growth process.

RESUMEN

Charged microdroplets offer novel electrochemical environments, distinct from traditional solid-liquid or solid-liquid-gas interfaces, due to the intense electric fields at liquid-gas interfaces. In this study, we propose that charged microdroplets serve as microelectrochemical cells (MECs), enabling unique electrochemical reactions at the gas-liquid interface. Using electrospray-generated microdroplets, we achieved multielectron CO2 reduction and C-C coupling to synthesize ethanol using molecular catalysts. These catalysts effectively harness and relay electrons, enhancing the longevity of solvated electrons and enabling multielectron reactions. Importantly, we revealed the intrinsic relationship between the size and charge density of a MEC and its reaction selectivity. Employing in situ mass spectrometry, we identified reaction intermediates (molecular catalyst adducts with HCOO) and oxidation products, elucidating the CO2 reduction mechanism and the comprehensive reaction procedure. Our research underscores the promising role of charged microdroplets in pioneering new electrochemical systems.

p28 is a poxvirus-encoded E3 ubiquitin ligase that possesses an N-terminal KilA-N domain and a C-terminal RING domain. In Ectromelia virus (ECTV), disruption of the p28 RING domain severely attenuated virulence in A strain mice, which normally succumb to ECTV infection. Moreover, this mutant virus exhibited dramatically reduced genome replication and impaired factory formation in A strain mice peritoneal macrophages (PMs) infected at high multiplicity of infection (MOI) These defects were not observed in PMs isolated from C57BL/6 mice which survive ECTV infection, demonstrating that p28 functions in a context-specific manner. To further investigate p28 function, we completely deleted the p28 gene from ECTV (ECTV-Δp28). In contrast to previous findings, we found that the ECTV-Δp28 virus exhibited severely compromised virus production and genome replication in PMs isolated from A strain mice only when infected at low MOI. This defect was minimal in bone marrow-derived macrophages and two cell lines derived from A strain mice. Furthermore, this low MOI defect in virus production was also observed in PMs isolated from the susceptible BALB/c mouse strain, but not PMs isolated from C57BL/6 mice. Taken together, our data demonstrate that the requirement for ECTV p28 to establish a productive infection depends on the MOI, the cell type, as well as the mouse strain.

Poxviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that infect insects and a variety of vertebrate species. The large genomes of poxviruses contain numerous genes that allow these viruses to successfully establish infection, including those that help evade the host immune response and prevent cell death. Ankyrin-repeat (ANKR)/F-box proteins are almost exclusively found in poxviruses, and they function as substrate adapters for Skp1-Cullin-1-F-box protein (SCF) multi-subunit E3 ubiquitin (Ub)-ligases. In this regard, they use their C-terminal F-box domain to bind Skp1, Cullin-1, and Roc1 to recruit cellular E2 enzymes to facilitate the ubiquitylation, and subsequent proteasomal degradation, of proteins bound to their N-terminal ANKRs. However, these proteins do not just function as substrate adapters as they also have Ub-independent activities. In this review, we examine both Ub-dependent and -independent activities of ANKR/F-box proteins and discuss how poxviruses use these proteins to counteract the host innate immune response, uncoat their genome, replicate, block cell death, and influence transcription. Finally, we consider important outstanding questions that need to be answered in order to better understand the function of this versatile protein family.

In the context of a transitional economy, there are much more studies with a heroic characterization of social entrepreneurs, whereas there is limited exploration of their less positive stories. A range of studies tried to address this issue, although very few delved into the "inner layer" (work-related mental health) to unveil the mechanism of how social entrepreneurs develop their intention to quit their businesses. With a sample of 196 social business owners from China, this research focuses on the prosocial motivation of social entrepreneurs as well as its impacts on their work-related wellbeing and thus their business exit intention. With the partial least squares structural equation modeling, this research finds that prosocial motivation decreased entrepreneurs' partial work-related wellbeing, increasing their exit intention, and the mediating effects among the three components of work-related wellbeing were different. Furthermore, this research finds that work-related wellbeing's impact on exit intention was largely stronger for the social entrepreneurs without political connections.

One of the most successful approaches for balancing the high stability and activity of water oxidation in alkaline solutions is to use amorphous and crystalline heterostructures. However, due to the lack of direct evidence at the molecular level, the nano/micro processes of amorphous and crystalline heterostructure electrocatalysts, including self-reconstruction and reaction pathways, remain unknown. Herein, the Leidenfrost effect assisted electrospray approach combined with phase separation was used for the first time to create amorphous NiO x /crystalline α-Fe2O3 (a-NiO x /α-Fe2O3) nanowire arrays. The results of in situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that with the increase of the potential at the a-NiO x /α-Fe2O3 interface, a significant accumulation of OH can be observed. Combining with XAS spectra and DFT calculations, we believe that more OH adsorption on the Ni centers can facilitate Ni2+ deprotonation to achieve the high-valence oxidation of Ni4+ according to HSAB theory (Fe3+ serves as a strong Lewis acid). This result promotes the electrocatalysts to follow the lattice oxygen activation mechanism. This work, for the first time, offers direct spectroscopic evidence for deepening the fundamental understanding of the Lewis acid effect of Fe3+, and reveals the synergistic effect on water oxidation via the unique amorphous and crystalline heterostructures.

This study was designed to test if satisfaction with health and personal financial wellbeing mediates the relationship between prosocial motivations and exit intentions among social entrepreneurs. Using a sample of 317 social entrepreneurs, the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) revealed that prosocial motivation decreased the financial satisfaction of entrepreneurs, which increased their exit intentions. However, health satisfaction did not have a mediating effect on the relationship between prosocial motivation and exit intention. Moreover, adopting the multi-group analysis (MGA) technique, we found that the negative impact of prosocial motivation on financial satisfaction was stronger for males than for females, suggesting male entrepreneurs were more likely to experience lower financial satisfaction caused by prosocial motivation than female entrepreneurs. There was no evidence that gender moderated the relationship between prosocial motivation and health satisfaction.

Why does social entrepreneurship tend to live so shortly? A range of studies tried to answer this question, although very few delved into the "inner layer" (psychological status) to unveil how social entrepreneurs decide to quit. Accordingly, focusing on prosocial motivation of social entrepreneurs and its impact on their work-related wellbeing and then their business exit intention, we conducted this empirical research. Furthermore, gender differences are involved based on relevant calls for in-depth investigation. With a sample of 301 respondents in China, deploying the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), we found prosocial motivation decreases entrepreneurs' work-related wellbeing, which in turn, increases entrepreneurial exit intention. Furthermore, adopting the multi-group analysis (MGA) technique, we uncovered that the impact of prosocial motivation on work-related wellbeing largely is stronger for males. Our research thus contributes to the growing research and knowledge on social entrepreneurship in terms of individual personality traits and how they impact a social entrepreneur's psychological status and thus their intention of exiting the social business. This study's further theoretical and practical implications, as well as its limitations and thus future research directions, are discussed at the end.

RESUMEN

The energy crisis is a continuing topic for all human beings, threatening the development of human society. Accordingly, harvesting energy from the surrounding environment, such as wind, water flow and solar power, has become a promising direction for the research community. Water contains tremendous energy in a variety of forms, such as rivers, ocean waves, tides, and raindrops. Among them, raindrop energy is the most abundant. Raindrop energy not only can complement other forms of energy, such as solar energy, but also have potential applications in wearable and universal energy collectors. Over the past few years, droplet-based electricity nanogenerators (DENG) have attracted significant attention due to their advantages of small size and high power. To date, a variety of fundamental materials and ingenious structural designs have been proposed to achieve efficient droplet-based energy harvesting. The research and application of DENG in various fields have received widespread attention. In this review, we focus on the fundamental mechanism and recent progress of droplet-based nanogenerators in the following three aspects: droplet properties, energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Finally, some challenges and further outlook for droplet-based nanogenerators are discussed to boost the future development of this promising field.

Strive to develop the interaction and efficient co-catalysts is one of the vital projects in realizing hybrid photocatalytic systems for water remediation. In this work, p-type porous Co3O4 was embedded onto n-type vertical TiO2 nanotube via an in-situ thermal etching method. ZIF-67 was employed as the structural template for Co3O4, which then augmented the light harvesting ability of the resultant photocatalyst. Such improvement was prompted by the light reflecting and directing attributes of porous Co3O4. Therefore, a remarkable MB removal rate was attained under sunlight irradiation, with superoxide radical being identified as the major reactive species. Photoelectric properties evaluation also verified that the p-n heterojunction developed herein exhibits outstanding charges separation ability with low impedance, particularly under light irradiation. This work highlights the idea on coupling both porous and p-n heterojunction engineering in augmenting photoactivity of catalyst, while offering insights in such structure-mediating approach.

Sluggish kinetics of the multielectron transfer process is still a bottleneck for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, and the reduction of reaction overpotential is crucial to boost reaction kinetics. Herein, a correlation between the OER overpotential and the cobalt-based electrode composition in a "Microparticles-in-Spider Web" (MSW) superstructure electrode is revealed. The overpotential is dramatically decreased first and then slightly increased with the continuous increase ratio of Co/Co3 O4 in the cobalt-based composite electrode, corresponding to the dynamic change of electrochemically active surface area and charge-transfer resistance with the electrode composition. As a proof-of-concept, the optimized electrode displays a low overpotential of 260 mV at 10.0 mA cm-2 in alkaline conditions with a long-time stability. This electrochemical performance is comparable and even superior to the most currently reported Co-based OER electrocatalysts. The remarkable electrocatalytic activity is attributed to the optimization of the electrochemically active sites and electron transfer in the MSW superstructure. Theoretical calculations identify that the metallic Co and Co3 O4 surface catalytic sites play a vital role in improving electron transport and reaction Gibbs free energies for reducing overpotential, respectively. A general way of boosting OER kinetics via optimizing the electrode configurations to mitigate reaction overpotential is offered in this study.

Inspired by lotus leaves, self-floating Janus cotton fabric is successfully fabricated for solar steam generation with salt-rejecting property. The layer-selective soot-deposited fabrics not only act as a solar absorber but also provide the required superhydrophobicity for floating on the water. With a polyester protector, the prepared Janus evaporator exhibits a sustainable evaporation rate of 1.375 kW m-2 h-1 and an efficiency of 86.3% under 1 sun (1 kW m-2) and also performs well under low intensity and inclined radiation. Furthermore, no special apparatus and/or tedious processes are needed for preparing this device. With a cost of less than $1 per m2, this flexible Janus absorber is a promising tool for portable solar vapor generator.

An advanced optical design for a low-cost and astigmatism-corrected spectrometer with a high resolution is presented. The theory and method of astigmatism correction are determined with the use of a concave toroidal mirror. The performances of a modified spectrometer and a traditional spectrometer are compared, and the analysis is verified. Experimentally, the limiting resolution of our spectrometer is 0.1 nm full width at half-maximum, as measured for 579.1 nm.

The immunogenicity of recombinant adenovirus serotype 5 (rAd5) vectors has been shown to be suppressed by neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) directed primarily against hexon hypervariable regions (HVRs). Preexisting immunity can be circumvented by replacing HVRs of rAd5 hexon with those derived from alternate adenovirus serotypes. However, chimeric modification of rAd5 hexon HVRs tends to cause low packaging efficiency or low proliferation of rAd5 vectors, but the related mechanism remains unclear. In this study, several Ad5-based vectors with precise replacement of HVRs with those derived from Ad37 and Ad43 were generated. We first observed that a HVR-exchanged rAd5 vector displayed a higher efficacy of the recombinant virus rescue and growth improvement compared with the rAd5 vector, although most hexon-chimeric rAd5 vectors constructed by us and other groups have proven to be nonviable or growth defective. We therefore evaluated the structural stability of the chimeric hexons and their interactions with the L4-100K chaperone. We showed that the viability of hexon-chimeric Ad5 vectors was not attributed to the structural stability of the chimeric hexon, but rather to the hexon maturation which was assisted by L4-100K. Our results suggested that the intricate interaction between hexon and L4-100K would determine the virus rescue and proliferation efficiency of hexon-chimeric rAd5 vectors.

Adenoviruses (Ads) are non-enveloped DNA viruses that have been extensively studied and used as vectors for gene therapy and several potential vaccines. There are 57 Ad serotypes in seven species (A-G), and Ad neutralizing antibody (NAb) titres can vary by serotype and geographical location. Until now serotype- and species-specific antibodies have been detected by neutralization or haemagglutination inhibition assays. These expensive and cumbersome methods of adenovirus typing have mainly been used in epidemiological studies. Our prior work demonstrated that NAbs against the fiber protein are commonly generated during natural Ad infection in humans and the trimeric knob is preferentially recognized by fiber-induced NAbs. In this study, we expressed nine trimeric knob proteins from representative Ad serotypes of human Ad (HAdV)-A-F in Escherichia coli and found no cross-reactivity of these recombinant proteins with rabbit hyperimmune sera (among HAdV-A-F or within HAdV-C). Results of the ELISA based on Ad2 and Ad5 (both HAdV-C) knob proteins were consistent with those of neutralization assays, indicating that the trimeric knob protein would be a good candidate antigen for detecting Ad serotype-specific NAbs in sera from naturally infected subjects. We also demonstrated the primary seroepidemiology of nine Ad serotypes in 274 children using the knob-based ELISA. These results have potential implications for epidemiology of Ad serotypes and future development of Ad-based vaccines and gene therapy.

Although it is known that Ad5-specific neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) against three major viral capsid components (hexon, penton and fiber) are generated, differences in the frequency and nature of these pre-existing NAbs remain unclear. The results emphasized the contribution of anti-fiber antibodies to Ad5 neutralization responses generated during natural viral infection. Additionally, Ad5-specific NAbs against the fiber knob protein were present in over 90% of the positive serum samples while 42% of the sera had NAbs against hexon in this study based on neutralization assay of anti-HVR and anti-knob subtracted sera and Western blotting analysis. We also found that the trimeric knob was preferentially recognized by fiber-induced NAbs and it was serotype-specific in human adenovirus species C. Results indicated that the trimeric knob protein would be a good candidate antigen for detecting adenovirus serotype-specific NAbs in naturally infected sera.

BACKGROUND: Efficacy of recombinant adenovirus serotype 5 (rAd5) vaccine vectors for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and other pathogens have been shown to be limited by high titers of pre-existing Ad5 neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) in the developing world. RESULTS: Using a secreted embryonic alkaline phosphatase (SEAP) neutralization assay, 50% serum neutralization titers against rAd2 and rAd5 vectors were measured in samples from 274 infants and young children in northeast China. The pediatric population was found to be 59.6% and 43.3% seropositive for rAd2 and rAd5, respectively. Of all participants, 44.9% had moderate and high (> 200) and 25.6% had high (>1000) Ad2 NAb titers, compared with the corresponding rates of 26.6% and 9.3% against Ad5. Marked age-dependent increases in NAb titers to both Ad serotypes were observed across five age groups, with the exception of infants in the 0-6-month group commonly having relatively high titers due to pre-existing maternal antibodies. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that Ad-based therapies may be suitible for children in the 7-12-month age range in this region.

Adenovirus is widely used in gene therapy and vaccination as a viral vector, and its hypervariable regions (HVRs) on hexon are the main antigen recognition sites of adenovirus. The modification of this area by genetic engineering will change the antigenic specificity of the virus. In addition, recent studies have demonstrated the importance of coagulation factor X (FX) in adenovirus serotype 5-mediated liver transduction in vivo. The binding site of adenovirus to FX is the HVRs on hexon. By constructing five proteins containing chimeric HVRs from different adenovirus serotypes, we focused on the antigenic specificity and the affinity for FX of these proteins compared with the corresponding viruses. Our data showed that HVR5 and HVR7 had only a part of hexon activity to neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) compared with the complete activity of HVR1-7. Results also demonstrated a differential high-affinity interaction of the HVRs proteins with FX and indicated that HVRs protein had a similar binding ability with corresponding adenovirus serotype. These results highlighted some properties of chimeric HVRs proteins and revealed the influence on the structure and function of hexon proteins and adenovirus resulting from the HVRs.
