RESUMEN

Early engagement in employment-related activities is associated with greater lifetime labor force attachment, which correlates with positive health, social, and quality of life outcomes. People with disabilities often require vocational intervention to enter and remain in the workforce and reap the employment-related health and social benefits. Their labor force attachment brings about the added societal-level benefits of increased tax contributions and reduced social assistance funding. Reason and evidence both support the need for early intervention to facilitate young people with disabilities' workforce entry. Based on available evidence and best practices, and in conjunction with expert input, a cost-benefit model was constructed to provide support for public investment in early employment intervention by demonstrating the societal-level benefits that could be projected. Results indicate the potential benefits for investment in early, targeted employment intervention at a societal level. Two personas were crafted to demonstrate the lifetime societal-level impact of investment in intervention for an individual with disabilities. The results provide relevant arguments for advocates, policy makers, program directors, and people entering adulthood with disabilities to understand the benefits of investing in interventions with the goal of long-term public savings.

RESUMEN

The development of green, selective, and efficient catalysts, which can aerobically oxidize a variety of alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones, is of both economic and environmental significance. We report here the synthesis of a novel aerobic oxidation catalyst, a zeolite-confined nanometer-sized RuO(2) (RuO(2)-FAU), by a one-step hydrothermal method. Using the spatial constraints of the rigid zeolitic framework, we sucessfully incorporated RuO(2) nanoparticles (1.3 +/- 0.2 nm) into the supercages of faujasite zeolite. Ru K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure results indicate that the RuO(2) nanoclusters anchored in the zeolite are structurally similar to highly hydrous RuO(2); that is, there is a two-dimensional structure of independent chains, in which RuO(6) octahedra are connected together by two shared oxygen atoms. In our preliminary catalytic studies, we find that the RuO(2) nanoclusters exhibit extraordinarily high activity and selectivity in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions, for example, air and ambient pressure. The physically trapped RuO(2) nanoclusters cannot diffuse out of the relatively narrow channels/pores of the zeolite during the catalytic process, making the catalyst both stable and reusable.

We investigated effects of nutrient addition on several physiological characteristics of 60-cm-tall black spruce (Picea mariana Mill. B.S.P.) layers (i.e., rooted branches of overstory trees) and 20-cm-tall planted seedlings on a clear-cut, N-limited boreal site. After two growing seasons, current-year and one-year-old needles of fertilized trees (layers and seedlings combined) had higher net photosynthetic rates (A(n)) and maximum capacity of Rubisco for CO(2) fixation (V(max)) than unfertilized trees. One-year-old needles of fertilized trees had higher stomatal conductance (g(s)), higher water-use efficiency, and lower intercellular to ambient CO(2) ratio than unfertilized trees. Additionally, fertilized trees had higher predawn and midday shoot water potentials than unfertilized trees. Stomatal conductance of 1-year-old needles was 23% higher in seedlings than in layers, but there were no significant differences in g(s) of current-year needles between the regeneration types. For both needle age-classes, A(n) and V(max) of layers were 25 and 40% higher, respectively, than the corresponding values for seedlings. The higher values of A(n), V(max) and foliar N concentration of layers compared with seedlings after two growing seasons may be associated with the larger root systems of the layers compared with the transplanted seedlings.
