Objective: This article aims to assess the adherence level to second-line therapy for cardiovascular prevention in a tertiary hospital in Mexico City and identify key barriers to adequate pharmacological adherence. Methods: A single-center prospective cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2018 and February 2020. Sociodemographic data were collected, and the Morisky medication adherence scale was performed. Directed interviews during medical consultations were also conducted to determine reasons for non-adherence. Results: Showed that out of 991 patients included with a median age of 65 (58.72) years, 70.3% exhibited inadequate adherence, with forgetfulness being the most common reason (55.4%). Patients receiving combined therapy with coronary revascularization showed higher adherence compared to those on optimal medical therapy alone. Low educational level (OR 1.68, IC 95% 1.23-2.23, p = 0.0001) and the use of optimal medical therapy alone (OR 1.2, I 95% 1.11-2.007 p = 0.007) were identified as predictors of poor adherence. Conclusion: Among patients with ischemic heart disease and pharmacological therapy for secondary prevention, inadequate adherence is observed in 70% of cases. Factors associated with poor pharmacological adherence were low educational level and prescription of medical therapy without revascularization.


Objetivo: Determinar el nivel de adherencia a la terapia secundaria de prevención cardiovascular en un hospital terciario de la Ciudad de México e identificar las barreras que contribuyen a la inadecuada adherencia farmacológica. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal entre agosto de 2018 y febrero de 2020. Se obtuvieron los datos sociodemográficos, la escala de adherencia a la medicación de Morisky, y se realizó una entrevista sobre las razones de la no adherencia. Resultados: 991 pacientes fueron incluidos con una mediana de edad de 65 (58,72) años. La adherencia inadecuada fue de 70.3%, siendo el olvido la causa más frecuente (55.4%). Aquellos pacientes en terapia farmacológica combinada con revascularización coronaria fueron más adherentes que aquellos en terapia médica óptima. El bajo nivel educativo (OR 1.68, IC95%1.23-2.3, p = 0.001) y el uso de tratamiento médico óptimo solo (OR 1.52, IC95%1.11-2.07, p = 0.007) fueron predictores de mala adherencia. Conclusión: En pacientes con cardiopatia isquemica y terapia farmacológica para prevención secundaria se observa adherencia inadecuada en 70%. Los factores asociados a mala adherencia farmacológica fueron el bajo nivel educativo y la prescripción de tratamiento médico sin revascularización.

PURPOSE: Achieving the initial stability of implants is necessary for hip hemiarthroplasty (HHA), especially in elderly patients, and this can be achieved with a cement mantle of quality. The direct anterior approach (DAA) for HHA lately has shown positive results. However, evidence is lacking of HHA in elderly patients with osteoporosis after femoral neck fracture (FNF). This study compares differences in cement mantle quality after HHA, its complications, radiological outcomes and functional status in elderly patients with FNF intervened through different approaches. METHODS: A non-interventional, retrospective case-control study was conducted. 150 cases were selected based on the surgical approach (DAA, DLA and PLA) in a 1:1:1 proportion between 2018 and 2019. Under 75 years old suspicion or confirmation of a pathological fracture were excluded. Antibiotic-loaded cement was utilized. Cement preparation involved vacuum centrifugation and standard instructions for preparation canal and filling, and prosthesis placement were followed. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences in cement mantle quality, radiological outcomes, and the majority of the postoperative complications and functional status considering the surgical approach (p > 0.05). However, the DAA was associated significantly with shorter hospital stays (8.3 days vs 11.3 and 13 days for DLA and PLA) a decrease in postoperative blood transfusion (22% vs 34% and 53%), and lower rate of loss of walking (8% vs 20% and 28.6%). CONCLUSION: The DAA for HHA in patients with FNF provides a high-quality cement mantle, similar to other approaches. Also, the DAA shows advantages like shorter hospital stays and lower transfusion rates in elderly patients.

Cochlear tuning and hence auditory frequency selectivity are thought to change in noisy environments by activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR). In humans, auditory frequency selectivity is often assessed using psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs), a plot of the level required for pure-tone maskers to just mask a fixed-level pure-tone probe as a function of masker frequency. Sometimes, however, the stimuli used to measure a PTC are long enough that they can activate the MOCR by themselves and thus affect the PTC. Here, PTCs for probe frequencies of 500 Hz and 4 kHz were measured in forward masking using short maskers (30 ms) and probes (10 ms) to minimize the activation of the MOCR by the maskers or the probes. PTCs were also measured in the presence of long (300 ms) ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral broadband noise precursors to investigate the effect of the ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral MOCR on PTC tuning. Four listeners with normal hearing participated in the experiments. At 500 Hz, ipsilateral and bilateral precursors sharpened the PTCs by decreasing the thresholds for maskers with frequencies at or near the probe frequency with minimal effects on thresholds for maskers remote in frequency from the probe. At 4 kHz, by contrast, ipsilateral and bilateral precursors barely affected thresholds for maskers near the probe frequency but broadened PTCs by reducing thresholds for maskers far from the probe. Contralateral precursors barely affected PTCs. An existing computational model was used to interpret the results. The model suggested that despite the apparent differences, the pattern of results is consistent with the ipsilateral and bilateral MOCR inhibiting the cochlear gain similarly at the two probe frequencies and more strongly than the contralateral MOCR.

OBJECTIVES: We compared sound quality and performance for a conventional cochlear-implant (CI) audio processing strategy based on short-time fast-Fourier transform (Crystalis) and an experimental strategy based on spectral feature extraction (SFE). In the latter, the more salient spectral features (acoustic events) were extracted and mapped into the CI stimulation electrodes. We hypothesized that (1) SFE would be superior to Crystalis because it can encode acoustic spectral features without the constraints imposed by the short-time fast-Fourier transform bin width, and (2) the potential benefit of SFE would be greater for CI users who have less neural cross-channel interactions. DESIGN: To examine the first hypothesis, 6 users of Oticon Medical Digisonic SP CIs were tested in a double-blind design with the SFE and Crystalis strategies on various aspects: word recognition in quiet, speech-in-noise reception threshold (SRT), consonant discrimination in quiet, listening effort, melody contour identification (MCI), and subjective sound quality. Word recognition and SRTs were measured on the first and last day of testing (4 to 5 days apart) to assess potential learning and/or acclimatization effects. Other tests were run once between the first and last testing day. Listening effort was assessed by measuring pupil dilation. MCI involved identifying a five-tone contour among five possible contours. Sound quality was assessed subjectively using the multiple stimulus with hidden reference and anchor (MUSHRA) paradigm for sentences, music, and ambient sounds. To examine the second hypothesis, cross-channel interaction was assessed behaviorally using forward masking. RESULTS: Word recognition was similar for the two strategies on the first day of testing and improved for both strategies on the last day of testing, with Crystalis improving significantly more. SRTs were worse with SFE than Crystalis on the first day of testing but became comparable on the last day of testing. Consonant discrimination scores were higher for Crystalis than for the SFE strategy. MCI scores and listening effort were not substantially different across strategies. Subjective sound quality scores were lower for the SFE than for the Crystalis strategy. The difference in performance with SFE and Crystalis was greater for CI users with higher channel interaction. CONCLUSIONS: CI-user performance was similar with the SFE and Crystalis strategies. Longer acclimatization times may be required to reveal the full potential of the SFE strategy.

Noise adaptation is the improvement in auditory function as the signal of interest is delayed in the noise. Here, we investigated if noise adaptation occurs in spectral, temporal, and spectrotemporal modulation detection as well as in speech recognition. Eighteen normal-hearing adults participated in the experiments. In the modulation detection tasks, the signal was a 200ms spectrally and/or temporally modulated ripple noise. The spectral modulation rate was two cycles per octave, the temporal modulation rate was 10 Hz, and the spectrotemporal modulations combined these two modulations, which resulted in a downward-moving ripple. A control experiment was performed to determine if the results generalized to upward-moving ripples. In the speech recognition task, the signal consisted of disyllabic words unprocessed or vocoded to maintain only envelope cues. Modulation detection thresholds at 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio and speech reception thresholds were measured in quiet and in white noise (at 60 dB SPL) for noise-signal onset delays of 50 ms (early condition) and 800 ms (late condition). Adaptation was calculated as the threshold difference between the early and late conditions. Adaptation in word recognition was statistically significant for vocoded words (2.1 dB) but not for natural words (0.6 dB). Adaptation was found to be statistically significant in spectral (2.1 dB) and temporal (2.2 dB) modulation detection but not in spectrotemporal modulation detection (downward ripple: 0.0 dB, upward ripple: -0.4 dB). Findings suggest that noise adaptation in speech recognition is unrelated to improvements in the encoding of spectrotemporal modulation cues.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Asprosin is a promising candidate for novel treatments for metabolic-endocrine disorders. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to consolidate the existing evidence regarding asprosin levels in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and obesity. METHODS: Scopus, Embase, PubMed, Ovid/Medline, and Web of Science were systematically searched without restrictions. We only used the standardized mean differences (SMD) with their 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) as the effect measure. A random-effects model (DerSimonian and Laird method) was used for the meta-analysis. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for Cross-Sectional Studies. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies (n = 3,787) were included in the meta-analysis. Participants with T2D had higher asprosin values than those without T2D (SMD: 1.64; 95 % CI: 1.08-2.21; I2 = 97 %). Patients with MetS had higher asprosin levels compared to those without MetS (SMD: 0.99; 95 % CI: 0.34-1.64; I2 = 96 %). Patients with obesity had higher asprosin levels than participants without obesity (SMD: 1.49; 95 % CI: 0.23-2.76; I2 = 98 %). CONCLUSIONS: Asprosin is significantly higher in patients with either T2D, MetS, or obesity, compared with controls.

The master control of mammalian circadian rhythms is the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which is formed by the ventral and dorsal regions. In SCN neurons, GABA has an important function and even excitatory actions in adulthood. However, the physiological role of this neurotransmitter in the developing SCN is unknown. Here, we recorded GABAergic postsynaptic currents (in the perforated-patch configuration using gramicidin) to determine the chloride reversal potential (ECl) and also assessed the immunological expression of the Na-K-Cl cotransporter 1 (NKCC1) at early ages of the rat (postnatal days (P) 3 to 25), during the day and night, in the two SCN regions. We detected that ECl greatly varied with age and depending on the SCN region and time of day. Broadly speaking, ECl was more hyperpolarized with age, except for the oldest age studied (P20-25) in both day and night in the ventral SCN, where it was less negative. Likewise, ECl was more hyperpolarized in the dorsal SCN both during the day and at night; while ECl was more negative at night both in the ventral and the dorsal SCN. Moreover, the total NKCC1 fluorescent expression was higher during the day than at night. These results imply that NKCC1 regulates the circadian and developmental fluctuations in the [Cl-]i to fine-tune ECl, which is crucial for either excitatory or inhibitory GABAergic actions to occur in the SCN.

RESUMEN

The One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, has gained significance amid emerging zoonotic diseases and antibiotic resistance concerns. This paper aims to demonstrate the utility of a collaborative tool, the SIEGA, for monitoring infectious diseases across domains, fostering a comprehensive understanding of disease dynamics and risk factors, highlighting the pivotal role of One Health surveillance systems. Raw whole-genome sequencing is processed through different species-specific open software that additionally reports the presence of genes associated to anti-microbial resistances and virulence. The SIEGA application is a Laboratory Information Management System, that allows customizing reports, detect transmission chains, and promptly alert on alarming genetic similarities. The SIEGA initiative has successfully accumulated a comprehensive collection of more than 1900 bacterial genomes, including Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica and Legionella pneumophila, showcasing its potential in monitoring pathogen transmission, resistance patterns, and virulence factors. SIEGA enables customizable reports and prompt detection of transmission chains, highlighting its contribution to enhancing vigilance and response capabilities. Here we show the potential of genomics in One Health surveillance when supported by an appropriate bioinformatic tool. By facilitating precise disease control strategies and antimicrobial resistance management, SIEGA enhances global health security and reduces the burden of infectious diseases. The integration of health data from humans, animals, and the environment, coupled with advanced genomics, underscores the importance of a holistic One Health approach in mitigating health threats.

Several studies have reported higher damage from insect herbivores to hybrid compared to inbred (pure line) rice. We used a collection of 20 hybrid and 12 inbred genotypes from diverse origins to test the hypotheses that hybrid rice susceptibility is due to (a) the hybrid plant type and/or (b) rice phylogeny. We challenged the genotypes with Nilaparvata lugans (BPH), Sogatella furcifera (WBPH) and Scirpophaga incertulas (YSB) in greenhouse and screenhouse bioassays and monitored herbivores in field plots. We used single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers to assess genetic similarities between the genotypes and found that the hybrids and inbreds formed two distinct clusters regardless of origin. In the screenhouse, hybrids were more susceptible than inbreds to YSB; however, resistant hybrids and susceptible inbreds were also apparent from both the screenhouse and field plots. Plant biomass was the best predictor of susceptibility to YSB. Plant origin had a greater effect than plant type on susceptibility to BPH and WBPH. WBPH was the most abundant planthopper in the field plots where numbers were highly correlated with planthopper fitness in the greenhouse bioassays. Our results provide evidence that high-yielding hybrids that are relatively resistant to herbivores can be achieved through careful breeding. The avoidance of susceptible genotypes during breeding should remain a key element of integrated rice pest management.

Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. Their structural, compositional, morphological, optoelectronic, and electrochemical properties have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Porosimetry and specific surface area in terms of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) technique have also been studied. XRD indicates the formation of a polycrystalline kesterite CZTSe phase. Raman peaks at 173 and 190 cm-1 confirm the formation of a pure phase. TEM micrographs revealed the presence of nanoparticles with average sizes of ~90 nm. A BET surface area of 7 m2/g was determined. The CZTSe NPs showed a bandgap of 1.0 eV and a p-type semiconducting behavior. As a proof of concept, for the first time, the CZTSe NPs have been used as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst to Congo red (CR) azo dye degradation. The nanophotocatalyst material under simulated sunlight results in almost complete degradation (96%) of CR dye after 70 min, following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (rate constant of 0.334 min-1). The prepared CZTSe was reusable and can be repeatedly used to remove CR dye from aqueous solutions.

Transition metal oxides are a great alternative to less expensive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. However, the lack of conductivity of these materials requires a conductor material to support them and improve the activity toward HER. On the other hand, carbon paste electrodes result in a versatile and cheap electrode with good activity and conductivity in electrocatalytic hydrogen production, especially when the carbonaceous material is agglomerated with ionic liquids. In the present work, an electrode composed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and cobalt ferrite oxide (CoFe2O4) was prepared. These compounds were included on an electrode agglomerated with the ionic liquid N-octylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate (IL) to obtain the modified CoFe2O4/MWCNTs/IL nanocomposite electrode. To evaluate the behavior of each metal of the bimetallic oxide, this compound was compared to the behavior of MWCNTs/IL where a single monometallic iron or cobalt oxides were included (i.e., α-Fe2O3/MWCNTs/IL and Co3O4/MWCNTs/IL). The synthesis of the oxides has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), RAMAN spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FE-SEM), corroborating the nanometric character and the structure of the compounds. The CoFe2O4/MWCNTs/IL nanocomposite system presents excellent electrocatalytic activity toward HER with an onset potential of -270 mV vs. RHE, evidencing an increase in activity compared to monometallic oxides and exhibiting onset potentials of -530 mV and -540 mV for α-Fe2O3/MWCNTs/IL and Co3O4/MWCNTs/IL, respectively. Finally, the system studied presents excellent stability during the 5 h of electrolysis, producing 132 µmol cm-2 h-1 of hydrogen gas.

Objectives: The study aimed to know the clinical, demographic, diagnostic, and treatments characteristics in patients with cardiomyopathies in Mexico. Methods: The Mexican Registry of Cardiomyopathies (REMEMI) is an observational, prospective and national study of patients with cardiomyopathies, which includes: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy of the right ventricle (ARVC). Results: A total of 1026 patients from most states of the Mexican Republic (19) were included, with 494 corresponding to DCM, 490 to HCM, 35 to RCM, and seven to ARVC. We found significant differences between the various cardiomyopathy phenotypes (p < 0.05) in the coexistence with diabetes, use of implantable defibrillator, presence of ventricular tachycardia, and NYHA functional class ≥ 1. There were no significant differences in age and predominant gender between each one. When analyzing by phenotype, we found that patients with HCM have limited use of diagnostic methods considered indispensable, such as cardiac magnetic resonance, Holter monitoring, and genetic testing in patients and their relatives. Conclusion: Seeking contemporary information through observational registries in Mexico is a valuable opportunity to understand the characteristics of the methods used in the study and treatment of diseases such as cardiomyopathies by Mexican physicians. It can provide information for the implementation of management guidelines and strategies to disseminate findings to improve healthcare in our country.


Objetivo: Conocer las características clínicas y demográficas, así como las herramientas diagnósticas y tratamientos utilizados en pacientes con miocardiopatías en México. Métodos: El Registro Mexicano de Miocardiopatías (REMEMI) es un estudio observacional, prospectivo y nacional de pacientes con diagnóstico de miocardiopatía, que incluye: miocardiopatía dilatada (MCD), miocardiopatía hipertrófica (MCH), miocardiopatía restrictiva (MCR) y miocardiopatía arritmogénica del ventrículo derecho (MAVD). Resultados: Se incluyó un total de 1026 pacientes provenientes de la mayoría de los estados de la República Mexicana (19), de los cuales 494 corresponden a MCD, 490 a MCH, 35 a MCR y 7 a MAVD. Encontramos diferencias significativas entre los diversos fenotipos de miocardiopatías (p < 0.05) en la coexistencia con diabetes, empleo de desfibrilador implantable, presencia de taquicardia ventricular y la clase funcional de la NYHA ≥ 1. No hubo diferencias significativas en la edad y sexo predominante entre cada uno. Al analizar por fenotipo encontramos que la MCH tienen poco empleo de métodos diagnósticos considerados como indispensables como la resonancia magnética cardiaca, el monitoreo Holter y el estudio genético en los pacientes y sus familiares. Conclusión: La búsqueda de información contemporánea a través de registros observacionales en México es una buena oportunidad para conocer las características de los métodos empleados en el estudio y tratamiento de enfermedades como las miocardiopatías por médicos mexicanos, y puede ofrecernos información para la implementación de guías de manejo y estrategias de difusión de los hallazgos para así mejorar el cuidado de la salud en nuestro país.

Auditory masking methods originally employed to assess behavioral frequency selectivity have evolved over the years to infer cochlear tuning. Behavioral forward masking thresholds for spectrally notched noise maskers and a fixed, low-level probe tone provide accurate estimates of cochlear tuning. Here, we use this method to investigate the effect of stimulus duration on human cochlear tuning at 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Probes were 20-ms sinusoids at 10 dB sensation level. Maskers were noises with a spectral notch symmetrically and asymmetrically placed around the probe frequency. For seven participants with normal hearing, masker levels at masking threshold were measured in forward masking for various notch widths and for masker durations of 30 and 400 ms. Measurements were fitted assuming rounded exponential filter shapes and the power spectrum model of masking, and equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs) were inferred from the fits. At 4 kHz, masker thresholds were higher for the shorter maskers but ERBs were not significantly different for the two masker durations (ERB30ms=294 Hz vs. ERB400ms=277 Hz). At 500 Hz, by contrast, notched-noise curves were shallower for the 30-ms than the 400-ms masker, and ERBs were significantly broader for the shorter masker (ERB30ms=126 Hz vs. ERB400ms=55 Hz). We discuss possible factors that may underlay the duration effect at low frequencies and argue that it may not be possible to fully control for those factors. We conclude that tuning estimates are not affected by maker duration at high frequencies but should be measured and interpreted with caution at low frequencies.

Identification of different species of animals has become an important issue in biology and ecology. Ornithology has made alliances with other disciplines in order to establish a set of methods that play an important role in the birds' protection and the evaluation of the environmental quality of different ecosystems. In this case, the use of machine learning and deep learning techniques has produced big progress in birdsong identification. To make an approach from AI-IoT, we have used different approaches based on image feature comparison (through CNNs trained with Imagenet weights, such as EfficientNet or MobileNet) using the feature spectrogram for the birdsong, but also the use of the deep CNN (DCNN) has shown good performance for birdsong classification for reduction of the model size. A 5G IoT-based system for raw audio gathering has been developed, and different CNNs have been tested for bird identification from audio recordings. This comparison shows that Imagenet-weighted CNN shows a relatively high performance for most species, achieving 75% accuracy. However, this network contains a large number of parameters, leading to a less energy efficient inference. We have designed two DCNNs to reduce the amount of parameters, to keep the accuracy at a certain level, and to allow their integration into a small board computer (SBC) or a microcontroller unit (MCU).

Introduction: Dengue is a vector-borne disease, especially important in tropical and subtropical areas. The first presentation of many arboviral diseases occurred mainly in animals, including multiple Alphaviruses and Flaviviruses, such as dengue. Objective: To determine the serological and molecular frequency of the dengue virus in animals. Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out in five databases for the proportion of animals infected with dengue, defined by molecular and serological tests. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to calculate the pooled prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Cochran?s Q test and the I2 statistic were used to assess the heterogeneity between the two studies. Results: The presence of dengue in bats, primates, birds, sheep, horses, cattle, pigs, rodents and buffaloes, according to serological methods, had a prevalence of 10%, 29%, 8%, 1%, 11%, 0%, 49%, 2%, 7%, respectively. According to molecular methods, the presence of dengue in bats had a seroprevalence of 6.0%. Conclusion: The present study confirms the presence of the Dengue virus in a large group of animal species, with potential implications as possible reservoirs of this virus, raising the possibility of zoonotic transmission.

Introduction: Avian influenza A H5N1 is a significant global public health threat. Although relevant, systematic reviews about its prevalence in animals are lacking. Methods: We performed a systematic literature review in bibliographic databases to assess the prevalence of H5N1 in animals. A meta-analysis with a random-effects model was performed to calculate the pooled prevalence and 95 % confidence intervals (95%CI). In addition, measures of heterogeneity (Cochran's Q statistic and I2 test) were reported. Results: The literature search yielded 1359 articles, of which 33 studies were fully valid for analysis, including 96,909 animals. The pooled prevalence for H5N1 in birds (n = 90,045, 24 studies) was 5.0 % (95%CI: 4.0-6.0 %; I2 = 99.21); in pigs (n = 3,178, 4 studies) was 1.0 % (95%CI: 0.0-1.0 %); in cats (n = 2,911, 4 studies) was 0.0 % (95%CI: 0.0-1.0 %); and in dogs (n = 479, 3 studies) was 0.0 % (95%CI: 0.0-2.0 %). Conclusions: While the occurrence of H5N1 in animals might be comparatively limited compared to other influenza viruses, its impact on public health can be substantial when it transmits to humans. This virus can potentially induce severe illness and has been linked to previous outbreaks. Therefore, it is essential to closely monitor and comprehend the factors influencing the prevalence of H5N1 in both avian and human populations to develop effective disease control and prevention strategies.

Hybrid rice results from crossing a male-sterile line (the A line) with a pollen doner (the restorer or R line). In 3-line hybrid breeding systems, a fertile B line is also required to maintain A line populations. Heterosis is defined as a condition of traits whereby the hybrid exceeds the average of the parental lines. Heterobeltiosis is where the hybrid exceeds both parents. Hybrid rice may display heterosis/heterobeltiosis for growth, yield and resistance to herbivores, among other traits. In a greenhouse experiment, we assessed the frequency of heterosis for resistance to the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugans (BPH)), whitebacked planthopper (Sogatella furcifera (WBPH)) and yellow stemborer (Scirpophaga incertulas (YSB)) in eight hybrids under varying soil nitrogen conditions. We also assessed plant biomass losses due to herbivore feeding as an approximation of tolerance (the plant's capacity to compensate for damage). Nitrogen reduced resistance to all three herbivores but was also associated with tolerance to WBPH and YSB based on improved plant survival, growth and/or yields. Plant biomass losses per unit weight of WBPH also declined under high nitrogen conditions for a number of hybrids, and there were several cases of overcompensation in rice for attacks by this herbivore. There was one case of nitrogen-related tolerance to BPH (increased grain yield) for a hybrid line with relatively high resistance, likely due to quantitative traits. Heterosis and heterobeltiosis were not essential to produce relatively high herbivore resistance or tolerance across hybrids.

OBJECTIVES.: Motivation for the study. No study conclusively recommends the use of medicinal plants to treat COVID-19 symptoms, and their indiscriminate use may present health risks. Main findings. Sixty percent of participants consumed medicinal plants to prevent COVID-19. This was particularly true for those living in the Peruvian highlands and individuals with family members diagnosed or deceased from COVID-19, who perceive a higher risk of infection and use medications or chlorine dioxide as preventive measures. Implications. Communication strategies emphasizing validated preventive practices and educating about the risks of consuming medicinal plants should be tailored to the predominant characteristics of the consumer. Determine the factors associated with the consumption of medicinal plants as a preventive measure against COVID-19 in the Peruvian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS.: A population over 18 years of age, living in Peru and without a history of COVID-19 disease, was evaluated. The factors associated with the consumption of medicinal plants were evaluated using a Poisson regression model with robust variances. RESULTS.: Of the 3231 participants included, 84.6% were young adults (18-29 years old), 62.7% were women, and 59.7% consumed a medicinal plant to prevent COVID-19 infection. The factors associated with the consumption of medicinal plants to prevent COVID-19 infection were residing in the Peruvian highlands, having had a family member diagnosed with COVID-19, having had a family member die from COVID-19, considering their family to be at increased risk of infection, having used medications or chlorine dioxide to prevent COVID-19, having medical information as the main source of information about COVID-19, thinking that medicinal plants are effective in preventing COVID-19 disease, or not being informed about their effectiveness. CONCLUSION.: Sixty percent of the participants reported having consumed a medicinal plant to prevent COVID-19. Authorities must apply communication strategies about the implications of consuming medicinal plants, prioritizing population groups with higher consumption patterns.

Ningún estudio recomienda de manera concluyente el uso de plantas medicinales para tratar los síntomas de la COVID-19, y su uso indiscriminado puede presentar riesgos para la salud. Principales hallazgos. El 60% de los participantes utilizó plantas medicinales para la prevención de la COVID-19. Especialmente aquellos de la sierra peruana y personas con familiares diagnosticados o fallecidos por COVID-19, que perciben mayores riesgos de contagio y utilizan medicamentos o dióxido de cloro como medidas preventivas. Implicancias. Las estrategias de comunicación esenciales para las prácticas preventivas validadas y la educación sobre los riesgos del consumo de plantas medicinales deben adaptarse a las características predominantes del consumidor. Determinar los factores asociados al consumo de plantas medicinales como prevención de la COVID-19 en la población peruana. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS.: Se evaluó población mayor de 18 años, residentes en Perú y sin antecedentes de enfermedad por COVID-19. Los factores asociados al consumo de plantas medicinales se evaluaron mediante un modelo de regresión de Poisson con varianzas robustas. RESULTADOS.: De 3231 participantes incluidos, el 84,6% eran jóvenes (18-29 años), el 62,7% eran mujeres y el 59,7% consumía alguna planta medicinal para prevenir la COVID-19. Los factores asociados al consumo de plantas medicinales para prevenir el contagio de COVID-19 fueron residir en la sierra peruana, haber tenido un familiar diagnosticado con COVID-19, haber tenido un familiar fallecido por COVID-19, considerar que su familia se encuentra en mayor riesgo de infección, haber usado medicamentos o dióxido de cloro para prevenir la COVID-19, tener información médica como principal fuente de información sobre la COVID-19, pensar que las plantas medicinales son efectivas para prevenir la enfermedad COVID-19 o no estar informado sobre su eficacia. CONCLUSIÓN: . El 60% de los participantes reportó haber consumido alguna planta medicinal para prevenir la COVID-19. Es importante que las autoridades apliquen estrategias de comunicación sobre lo que implica el consumo de plantas medicinales, priorizando los grupos poblacionales que tienen mayores patrones de consumo.

Mpox is a zoonotic disease that became epidemic in multiple countries in 2022. There is a lack of published systematic reviews on natural animal infection due to Mpox. We performed a systematic literature review with meta-analysis to assess animal Mpox prevalence. We performed a random-effects model meta-analysis to calculate the pooled prevalence and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) for prevalence studies. After the screening, 15 reports were selected for full-text assessment and included in qualitative and quantitative analyses. Ten reports assessed Mpox infection by molecular or serological tests (n = 2680), yielding a pooled prevalence of 16.0% (95%CI: 3.0-29.0%) for non-human primates; 8.0% (95%CI: 4.0-12.0%) for rodents and 1.0% (95%CI: 0.0-3.0%) for shrews. Further studies in other animals are required to define the extent and importance of natural infection due to Mpox. These findings have implications for public human and animal health. OneHealth approach is critical for prevention and control.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) may derive from Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV)-infected human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) that migrate to sites characterized by inflammation and angiogenesis, promoting the initiation of KS. By analyzing the RNA sequences of KSHV-infected primary hMSCs, we have identified specific cell subpopulations, mechanisms, and conditions involved in the initial stages of KSHV-induced transformation and reprogramming of hMSCs into KS progenitor cells. Under proangiogenic environmental conditions, KSHV can reprogram hMSCs to exhibit gene expression profiles more similar to KS tumors, activating cell cycle progression, cytokine signaling pathways, endothelial differentiation, and upregulating KSHV oncogenes indicating the involvement of KSHV infection in inducing the mesenchymal-to-endothelial (MEndT) transition of hMSCs. This finding underscores the significance of this condition in facilitating KSHV-induced proliferation and reprogramming of hMSCs towards MEndT and closer to KS gene expression profiles, providing further evidence of these cell subpopulations as precursors of KS cells that thrive in a proangiogenic environment.
