RESUMEN

Hydatid disease is an infective picture caused by echinococcus, which progresses with cysts in various organs, especially in the liver. Renal involvement is an unusual location in the course of the disease. Although mostly asymptomatic renal cysts are seen, rarely glomerular or tubular associated nephropathy develops. In addition, the development of amyloidosis has been shown previously in patients with untreated chronic hydatid cysts. We wanted to bring a 27-year-old female patient with a 10-year history of hydatid cyst and AA amyloidosis to the literature. In addition, in our literature review for hydatid disease-associated nephropathies, we brought together data from 12 studies involving a total of 21 cases. Of these cases, 3 were membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN), 5 were, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), 1 was minimally change disease (MCD), 5 were AA amyloidosis (including our case), 3 were immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), 1 was tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN), 1 was chronic kidney disease (CKD), 1 was TIN with mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis (MesPGN), 1 was TIN with IgAN, 1 was MPGN with immunoglobulin M nephropathy (IgMN). In this way, we wanted to shed light on the relationship between Echinococcus and nephropathy. In this way, we wanted to emphasise the necessity of doing renal examinations in the follow-up of hydatid cyst patients.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: In polycythemia vera (PV) patients undergoing phlebotomy, iron deficiency (ID) may develop. ID has been linked to restless legs syndrome (RLS), and in one study, 29.6% of PV patients had RLS. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of RLS in PV and to evaluate factors that might play a role in RLS development among PV and essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients. METHODS: We consecutively included PV cases as the patient group, and ET and ID patients and healthy subjects (HSs) were included as controls. Those with conditions that could lead to RLS were excluded. All subjects were questioned according to the diagnostic criteria of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. RESULTS: Twenty-seven PV, 23 ET, and 22 ID patients and 23 HSs were included. RLS was detected in 25.9%, 34.8%, and 45.5% of PV, ET, and ID patients, respectively. None of the HSs had RLS. In univariate analysis, interferon-α and anagrelide use, magnesium levels, and the Leeds assessment of neuropathic symptoms and signs (LANSS) scores had a significant impact on RLS in PV and ET patients (p = 0.014, p = 0.032, p = 0.036, and p = 0.003, respectively). CONCLUSION: RLS was more common among PV and ET patients than HSs, which was irrespective to the iron status. RLS was more frequent in ET patients than that observed in PV cases, indicating that ID may not be the only causative factor for RLS development in PV. Further prospective studies are needed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of RLS developing in PV and ET.

RESUMEN

Since the introduction of imatinib, the management of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has changed considerably. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are the mainstay of CML treatment; however, the high financial burden of TKIs can be problematic for both the patients and health care systems. After the emergence of generics, reimbursement policies of many countries have changed, and generics offered an alternative treatment option for CML patients. There are many papers published on the use of generics in CML patients with conflicting results regarding both efficacy and safety. In this paper, we systematically reviewed the current literature on generic imatinib use in CML, and 36 papers were evaluated. Both in vitro and in vivo studies of generic imatinib showed comparable results with branded imatinib in terms of bioequivalence and bioavailability. In most studies, generics were comparable with the original molecule in terms of efficacy and safety, both in newly diagnosed patients and after switching from Gleevec. Some generic studies showed contradictory findings regarding efficacy and toxicity, and these differences can be attributed to some factors including the use of different generics in different countries. Both in hypothetical models and in real life, introduction of generic imatinib caused significant reduction in health care costs. In conclusion, generics are not inferior to original imatinib in terms of efficacy with an acceptable toxicity profile. Notwithstanding the generally favorable efficacy and safety of generics worldwide to date, we most probably still need more time to draw firmer conclusions on the longer-term outcomes of generics.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Polymers are used in dentistry on a daily basis due to their mechanical, functional and aesthetic properties. However, such biomaterials are subject to deterioration in the oral environment. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the structural properties of five commonly used dental polymers to determine their best clinical indications. METHODS: Four hundred-fifty samples of five dental polymers (polyethylenterephthalat - glycol modified (PG), polymethyl methacrylate (PA), ethylene vinyl acetate(E), polycarbonate (PC), polyetheretherketone (PK) were prepared to investigate their thermal, structural and chemical characteristics using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared analysis(FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), X-ray diffraction(XRD), and Shore D hardness test. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD, and Levene's tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: PK (87.2) and PA (82.4) displayed the highest hardness values and smooth surfaces, as observed with SEM (p<0.001). Silica was detected in PK, PA, and E by EDS and XRD. The highest glass transition temperature was recorded for PC (145.00±2.00°C) and PK (143.00±1.87°C), while the lowest value was measured for E (50.00±2.12°C)(p<0.001).The highest mass loss was detected for PG (91.40±1.40%) by TGA. CONCLUSIONS: PA and PK polymers can be used for stress-containing treatments due to their mechanical properties. These two materials are also advantageous in terms of plaque accumulation as these polymers reveal smoother surfaces than other groups. Insufficient physical and thermal properties require the use of E with caution and only in limited clinical indications.

RESUMEN

In the current study, organoruthenium(II)-arene complexes (I-IV) have been prepared by the reaction of [{(η6-p-cym)RuCl}2(µ-Cl)2] with new thiosemicarbazones (TSC1-4).The isolate was analyzed using elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal XRD. Subsequently, the complexes and TSC ligands were assessed for anticancer properties in vitro against three different colorectal cancer stage's cell lines (Caco-2, DLD-1, and SW620) and a noncancerous cell line (CCD18Co). The complexes (I-IV) showed higher cytotoxicity with low IC50 values as 0.1-0.33 µM in colorectal cell lines except for SW620 (47.4-84.20 µM) than in a noncancerous cell. Complex I was 2.8 and 24.5-fold more active against Caco-2 and DLD-1 than CCD18Co, respectively. The complexes (I-IV) accumulated at a high concentration in the cell nuclei and caused cell cycle arrest by affecting the G0/G1 and/or G2/M phase and showed high binding affinity with CT-DNA (Kb = 104 M-1). The expression of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 apoptosis-related protein levels was slightly upregulated and Atg5 autophagy-related protein level was clearly downregulated according to control and 5-FU-treated cells after complex I and II treatment. Furthermore, it was observed that cytotoxicity of the complexes is decreased while cancer progresses. Altogether, this study indicates that all organoruthenium (II)-arene complexes (particularly complex I) can be a promising alternative to platinum counterparts in cancer treatment.

RESUMEN

During development of colon cancer, Protein Kinase Cs (PKCs) are involved in regulation of many genes controlling several cellular mechanisms. Here, we examined the changes in cell adhesion molecules and PKCs for colorectal cancer progression. We identified that PKCs affected expression of EpCAM, claudins, tetraspanins. Treatment with low concentrations of PKC inhibitors resulted in decreased cell viability. In addition, immunoblotting and qRT-PCR analysis showed that apoptosis was inhibited while autophagy was induced by PKC inhibition in colon cancer cells. Furthermore, we observed decreased levels of intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl, confirming the ROS-induced apoptosis. Taken together, our results reveal that PKC signalling modulates not only cell adhesion dynamics but also cell death-related mechanisms. Abbreviations: PKC: Protein Kinase C; EpCAM: Epithelial cell adhesion molecule; FBS: fetal bovine serum; MTT: 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide); CAM: cell adhesion molecule; ROS: reactive oxygen species.

RESUMEN

Human fascioliasis with Fasciola species occurs worldwide and is most common among rural people who tend sheep and eat uncooked water vegetables, particularly watercress. The natural history of the acute phase begins with ingestion of metacercariae encysted on various kinds of aquatic vegetation such as watercress. Fascioliasis primarily involves the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and occasionally ectopic sites. We describe herein a case of ectopic fascioliasis. This uncommon form of disease was peritonitis; both visceral and parietal peritoneal layers were affected with the formation of multiple nodules and ascites.
