RESUMEN

Sero-epidemiological survey of 34 blind people, 26 abattoir workers and 117 others to detect antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii was conducted. Only 15% of the blind people had positive levels of agglutinins in their sera. 42% of the abattoir workers and 25% of other donors were also serologically positive. While Toxoplasmosis is zoonotic, it does not seem that the disease was responsible for the blindness among the group that we have studied.

RESUMEN

An investigation was conducted to determine the incidence of Echinococcus infection among dogs and slaughtered sheep and goats in Ibadan Municipality. Of 102 dogs examined, forty-nine (48%) had Echinococcus-like ova. Parasite eggs from four (3.9%) of these animals produced Echinococcus larvae when cultured while twenty (19.6%) of the faecal samples had proglottides. Two hundred and fifteen sheep and goats were examined at four different abattoirs. Only 28% had hydatid cysts.

RESUMEN

An epidemiological survey of human faeces collected from open places in native quarters and from volunteers in modern housing areas was conducted so as to ascertain the intestinal helminth infections in Ibadan a town in South Western Nigeria. Out of four hundred and seventy eight stool samples examined between February 1980 and January 1981 in twenty nine localities grouped into 7 zones, Ascaris (Round worm) Trichuris (Whip worm) and hookworm were most prevalent. Ascaris and hookworms were three times as prevalent in native areas as in modern quarters. Two local dispensary records confirmed many reported cases of 'stomach aches' that responded to deworming therapy. The public health significance of open field defecation is discussed. The need to resuscitate the public sanitary inspectors' act as practiced prior to the country's independence in 1960 is also advocated.
