RESUMEN

BACKGROUND Severe hypertriglyceridemia is a well-known cause of acute pancreatitis. Mild elevations of triglyceride levels are common in patients presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Rarely, DKA can be accompanied by an elevation of serum triglyceride level severe enough to lead to AP. CASE REPORT We report one such case of a young diabetic male who presented with DKA that was complicated by hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis (HTGAP). We were able to treat the condition with a slightly prolonged infusion of intravenous (IV) regular insulin in an efficient and cost-effective manner with a good outcome. CONCLUSIONS From our experience, DKA-associated HTGAP can be rapidly, efficiently, and cost-effectively treated with IV regular insulin and close biochemical monitoring. A high index of suspicion for acute pancreatitis is necessary in patients with DKA, especially with co-existing hypertriglyceridemia; and all efforts should be made to diagnose it in a timely manner to prevent subsequent complications.

RESUMEN

This study of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in fecal droppings of migratory Egyptian vultures (Neophron p. percnopterus) revealed eight positive samples (n=25) by a 16S rRNA gene-based PCR in two consecutive winter seasons. Disk diffusion sensitivity testing revealed three multiple antimicrobial resistant (MAR) isolates. Genotypic characterization showed mutually exclusive exo-s and exo-u virulence genes in five and three isolates, respectively, while the alg gene was present in all of the isolates. MAR isolates with virulence genes were detected in both seasons. The Egyptian vultures could potentially be vectors of pathogenic and MAR P. aeruginosa, thereby affecting regional control and preventive measures.

RESUMEN

Present study was undertaken to study the prevalence of ß-haemolytic streptococci in equine of northern temperate region of Jammu and Kashmir, India. One hundred and forty one samples were collected in duplicate from nasopharyngeal tract of diseased (53) and apparently healthy equine (88) for isolation and direct PCR. A total of 77 isolates of streptococci were recovered from 141 samples with an overall prevalence rate of 54.60%. Out of these 77 isolates, 52 were from diseased and 25 from apparently healthy animals. Of the 77 isolates, 4 were identified as Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, 56 as S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus and 17 as S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis. Thus the overall prevalence of S. equi subsp. equi, S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus and S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis was 2.83, 39.71 and 12.05% respectively. The sensitivity of the PCR for the detection of S. equi species was found higher when attempted from direct swab samples.
