The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most generally injured one of the major knee ligaments. These injuries plague both athletes and non-athletes. This cross-sectional and comprehensive study was conducted in the Department of Radiology and Imaging collaborating with Department of Orthopedics of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh, completed from January 2014 to December 2015. The study evaluated the role of MRI in the diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament injury of knee joint, keeping Arthroscopy as standard, compared the MRI and arthroscopic findings to determine accuracy, sensitivity and predictivity of MRI in the diagnosis of ACL injury in knee joint. For this purpose, a total of 50 patients having clinical suspicion of ACL injury in knee joint were enrolled in this study to perform MRI and Arthroscopy. MRI was done in all these patients. Clinically suspected but MRI diagnosed as no ACL injury, patients who were not willing to undergo arthroscopy examination and patient who were not fit for arthroscopy were excluded from the study. More than half (52.0%) of the patients were in 3rd decade and male to female ratio was 3.5:1. Less than one fourth (24.0%) of the patients were service holder. Forty two percent patients had duration of suffering for 2 weeks. Most 49(98.2%) patients had history of trauma, 45(90.0%) had pain in Knee joint, 24(48.0%) had difficulty in walking, 19(38.0%) had swelling in Knee joint and 13(26.0%) had restricted range of motion. Anterior drawer test was 37(74.0%) and Lachman test 16(32.0%). Loss of normal contour of ACL was found in 50.0%. Signal change of ACL in PD and T2W1 was found 42(84.0%) patients, and thickened ACL in 33(66.0%) patients. In MRI diagnosis tear was present in 80.0% of the patients. ACL tear diagnosed by MRI among the patients, 20(40.0%) had partial tear and 20(40.0%) had complete tear. In arthroscopy diagnosis 38(76.0%) had tear present. ACL tear diagnosed by arthroscopy of the patients 15(30.0%) had partial tear and 23(46.0%) had complete tear. Majority 20(40.0%) patients had medial meniscus injury, 15(30.0%) had lateral meniscus injury, 11(22.0%) had PCL injury, 4(8.0%) had lateral co-lateral ligament injury and 2(4.0%) had medial co-lateral ligament injury. In MRI diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament tear, 37 cases were true positive, three cases false positive, one case false negative and nine cases was true negative. The validity of MRI diagnosis evaluation for anterior cruciate ligament tear was 97.4% sensitivity, 75.0% specificity, 92.0% accuracy, 92.5% positive predictive values and 90.0% negative predictive values.

Meningitis literally means inflammation of the meninges. It is mostly caused by bacteria, virus, fungus and protozoa and pyogenic meningitis constitutes a serious neurological disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This study was carried out to evaluate the clinical presentation and immediate outcome of pyogenic meningitis in children. This was a prospective observational study and conducted at department of Paeditrics in Cumilla Medical College Hospital, Cumilla, Bangladesh from July 2014 to June 2015. Total 50 children were diagnosed as pyogenic meningitis fulfilling the inclusion criteria was included in this study. Cases were enrolled purposively. Immediately after admission through history and clinical examination, complete blood count, random blood sugar, Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination and blood culture was done in all patients. For statistical analysis chi-square test was done and significance of analysis was made when p value <0.05. This study includes patients aged between 2 months to 12 years and male female ratio was 1.5:1. Several risk factors like male sex (60.0%), age below one year (42.0%), Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) (30.0%), not exclusively breastfed (44.0%) were identified. Common presenting complaints were fever (100.0%), convulsion (96.0%), altered consciousness (42.0%) and vomiting (38.0%). Common physical signs were neck rigidity (56.0%), Kernig's sign (26.0%) and bulged fontanelle (34.0%). CSF was hazy in 54.0%, clear in 38.0% and turbid in 08.0% cases, CSF protein was more than 100mg/dl in 90.0% of the cases and glucose was less than 40mg/dl in most of the cases (94.0%). Streptococcus Pneumoniae (49.0%) followed by Neisseria Meningitidis (38.0%) were the two most commonly isolated organism responsible for pyogenic meningitis. Mortality rate during hospital stay was 18.0% and complications developed in 18.0% of cases. To avoid maltreatment in our resource limited setting due to failure of identifying organism, this study might help to administer appropriate antibiotics against organism and to reduce morbidity and mortality in meningitis. This study revealed less mortality rate in our country than neighbors and severe malnutrition important risk factors for the burden of pyogenic meningitis. It requires large scale multicentre studies to establish the whole scenario of Bangladesh.

The disease may be an explicit status that negatively affects human health. Cardiopathy is one of the common deadly diseases that is attributed to unhealthy human habits compared to alternative diseases. With the help of machine learning (ML) algorithms, heart disease can be noticed in a short time as well as at a low cost. This study adopted four machine learning models, such as random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), AdaBoost (AB), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN), to detect heart disease. A generalized algorithm was constructed to analyze the strength of the relevant factors that contribute to heart disease prediction. The models were evaluated using the datasets Cleveland, Hungary, Switzerland, and Long Beach (CHSLB), and all were collected from Kaggle. Based on the CHSLB dataset, RF, DT, AB, and KNN models predicted an accuracy of 99.03%, 96.10%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. In the case of a single (Cleveland) dataset, only two models, namely RF and KNN, show good accuracy of 93.437% and 97.83%, respectively. Finally, the study used Streamlit, an internet-based cloud hosting platform, to develop a computer-aided smart system for disease prediction. It is expected that the proposed tool together with the ML algorithm will play a key role in diagnosing heart diseases in a very convenient manner. Above all, the study has made a substantial contribution to the computation of strength scores with significant predictors in the prognosis of heart disease.

In case of any natural disasters or technical failures of nuclear facilities, the surrounding media including human beings may receive unexpected radiation exposures. In such a situation, there is no viable way to know how much radiation dose is received by human beings. Realizing that motorized vehicles are parked at fixed but increasing distances within the nuclear installation and industrial environment, this study investigates the kinetic parameters of readily available car windscreens which form the basis to be employed in post-accident dose reconstruction or for retrospective dosimetry. To understand the luminescence features of this crystalline media, a convenient thermoluminescence (TL) technique has been employed. Several well-defined theoretical models and methods were employed to calculate the kinetic parameters including the order of kinetics (b), activation energy (E) or trap depth, frequency factor (s) or escape probability and trap lifetime (τ), by analyzing the glow curves of the irradiated samples. The analysed trapping parameters indicate that the Toyota (E = 0.75-1.31 eV, s = 3.0E+6 - 3.7E+9 (s-1), τ = 6.9E+5 - 1.3E+14 s) and Honda (E = 0.95-1.68 eV, s = 2.1E+10 - 4.1E+13 (s-1), τ = 2.2E+9 - 3.1E+20 s) windscreen offer promising features for conventional TL dosimetry applications, while the obtained longer lifetime (τ = 6.8E+10 - 8.6E+29 s) or higher activation energy (E = 1.23-2.15 eV) for Proton brand windscreen indicates better stability or slow fading of the material, thus suitable for retrospective TL dosimetry. In addition, by assessing the area of deconvoluted micro-Raman spectra of windshield glasses in high-frequency regions, it has been observed the phenomenon of dose-dependent structural alterations and internal annealing of defects. This pattern is also consistent with those cyclical pattern observed in the intensity ratio of defect and graphite modes in the studies of carbon-rich media. Such common phenomena indicate the possibility of using the Raman microspectroscopy as a probe of radiation damage in silica-based media.

SATB homeobox proteins are important regulators of developmental gene expression. Among the stem cell lineages that emerge during early embryonic development, trophoblast stem (TS) cells exhibit robust SATB expression. Both SATB1 and SATB2 act to maintain the trophoblast stem-state. However, the molecular mechanisms that regulate TS-specific Satb expression are not yet known. We identified Satb1 variant 2 as the predominant transcript in trophoblasts. Histone marks, and RNA polymerase II occupancy in TS cells indicated an active state of the promoter. A novel cis-regulatory region with active histone marks was identified ∼21 kbp upstream of the variant 2 promoter. CRISPR/Cas9 mediated disruption of this sequence decreased Satb1 expression in TS cells and chromosome conformation capture analysis confirmed looping of this distant regulatory region into the proximal promoter. Scanning position weight matrices across the enhancer predicted two ELF5 binding sites in close proximity to SATB1 sites, which were confirmed by chromatin immunoprecipitation. Knockdown of ELF5 downregulated Satb1 expression in TS cells and overexpression of ELF5 increased the enhancer-reporter activity. Interestingly, ELF5 interacts with SATB1 in TS cells, and the enhancer activity was upregulated following SATB overexpression. Our findings indicate that trophoblast-specific Satb1 expression is regulated by long-range chromatin looping of an enhancer that interacts with ELF5 and SATB proteins.

Poor weaning practice and malnutrition among under 5 (yrs) children are still major public health issues in Bangladesh. This study aimed to develop a cheap and nutritious weaning food for the children of Bangladesh. For this purpose, three weaning formulations of Q1, Q2, and Q3 with different ratios of germinated wheat, germinated mung-bean, and soya-bean, and a constant amount of sweet potato, sugar, salt, and milk flavor were processed and evaluated. The prepared formulations were investigated for proximate composition and sensory evaluation and compared with six commercial weaning food products. The proximate composition values indicated that the fat content of formulated foods ranged between 09.29% and 11.40%. The carbohydrate content was ranged between 52.80% and 61.20%, which was low compared with commercial ones. The protein content of the formulated foods was 20.33%-27.70%, and that was approximately two times more than available commercial foods. The energy content was also more than locally available commercial weaning foods, which were 411.40 ± 1.51 kcal to 419.30 ± 1.12 kcal. Sample Q2 had an 8.4 acceptance score in sensory analysis of a 9-point hedonic scale scorecard, which made it more acceptable than the other two samples. The values of mineral elements (Na, K, Fe) were similar to all analyzed varieties of commercial weaning foods. This nutrient-enriched weaning food will easily be affordable for the people of developing countries like Bangladesh. The results showed that the formulated weaning food had the desired characteristics of a weaning food; hence, it could decrease malnutrition in children.

Nuclear radiation shielding capabilities for a glass series 20Bi2O3 - xPbO - (80 - 2x)B2O3 - xGeO2 (where x = 5, 10, 20, and 30 mol%) have been investigated using the Phy-X/PSD software and Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. The mass attenuation coefficients (µm) of selected samples have been estimated through XCOM dependent Phy-X/PSD program and MCNP-5 code in the photon-energy range 0.015-15 MeV. So obtained µm values are used to calculate other γ-ray shielding parameters such as half-value layer (HVL), mean-free-path (MFP), etc. The calculated µm values were found to be 71.20 cm2/g, 76.03 cm2/g, 84.24 cm2/g, and 90.94 cm2/g for four glasses S1 to S4, respectively. The effective atomic number (Zeff)values vary between 69.87 and 17.11 for S1 or 75.66 and 29.11 for S4 over 0.05-15 MeV of photon-energy. Sample S4, which has a larger PbO/GeO2 of 30 mol% in the bismuth-borate glass, possesses the lowest MFP and HVL, providing higher radiation protection efficiency compared to all other combinations. It shows outperformance while compared the calculated parameters (HVL and MFP) with the commercial shielding glasses, different alloys, polymers, standard shielding concretes, and ceramics. Geometric Progression (G-P) was applied for evaluating the energy absorption and exposure buildup factors at energies 0.015-15 MeV with penetration depths up to 40 mfp. The buildup factors showed dependence on the MFP and photon-energy as well. The studied samples' neutron shielding behavior was also evaluated by calculating the fast neutron removal cross-section (ΣR), i.e. found to be 0.139 cm-1 for S1, 0.133 cm-1 for S2, 0.128 cm-1 for S3, and 0.12 cm-1 for S4. The results reveal a great potential for using a glass composite sample S4 in radiation protection applications.

In the present study, the effect of concentration of titanium carbide (TiC) particles on the structural, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of Ni-P composite coatings was investigated. Various amounts of TiC particles (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g L-1) were co-electrodeposited in the Ni-P matrix under optimized conditions and then characterized by employing various techniques. The structural analysis of prepared coatings indicates uniform, compact, and nodular structured coatings without any noticeable defects. Vickers microhardness and nanoindentation results demonstrate the increase in the hardness with an increasing amount of TiC particles attaining its terminal value (593HV100) at the concentration of 1.5 g L-1. Further increase in the concentration of TiC particles results in a decrease in hardness, which can be ascribed to their accumulation in the Ni-P matrix. The electrochemical results indicate the improvement in corrosion protection efficiency of coatings with an increasing amount of TiC particles reaching to ~ 92% at 2.0 g L-1, which can be ascribed to a reduction in the active area of the Ni-P matrix by the presence of inactive ceramic particles. The favorable structural, mechanical, and corrosion protection characteristics of Ni-P-TiC composite coatings suggest their potential applications in many industrial applications.

This study investigates the use of microalgae as a biosorbent to eliminate heavy metals ions from wastewater. The Chlorella kessleri microalgae species was employed to biosorb heavy metals from synthetic wastewater specimens. FTIR, and SEM/XRD analyses were utilized to characterize the microalgal biomass (the adsorbent). The experiments were conducted with several process parameters, including initial solution pH, temperature, and microalgae biomass dose. In order to secure the best experimental conditions, the optimum parameters were estimated using an integrated response surface methodology (RSM), desirability function (DF), and crow search algorithm (CSA) modeling approach. A maximum lead(II) removal efficiency of 99.54% was identified by the RSM-DF platform with the following optimal set of parameters: pH of 6.34, temperature of 27.71 °C, and biomass dosage of 1.5 g L-1. The hybrid RSM-CSA approach provided a globally optimal solution that was similar to the results obtained by the RSM-DF approach. The consistency of the model-predicted optimum conditions was confirmed by conducting experiments under those conditions. It was found that the experimental removal efficiency (97.1%) under optimum conditions was very close (less than a 5% error) to the model-predicted value. The lead(II) biosorption process was better demonstrated by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Finally, simultaneous removal of metals from wastewater samples containing a mixture of multiple heavy metals was investigated. The removal efficiency of each heavy metal was found to be in the following order: Pb(II) > Co(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Cr(II).

Hypertension and diabetes co-exist frequently. Therefore, salt intake behavior, a risk factor of hypertension, in diabetic patients plays an important role in determining their cardiovascular outcome. The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge and behaviors of health risks associated with a salt intake in adults with type 2 diabetes. This cross-sectional study was conducted among the type 2 diabetic in-patients of Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from October to December 2016. Data were collected from 131 respondents through interview using WHO STEPS module of salt with adaptation to local context like on amount of added salt while taking meal. Information on blood pressure, body mass index and relevant co-morbidities were also collected. About half of the respondents were women (56.5%). Mean age of the respondents was 54.3±14.4 years. More than six in 10 of them (62.6%) took added salt while taking meal; and 40.5% took processed foods with high salt. The mean amount of added salt intake among the users was 4.4±1.6gm per day having no significant difference between men and women. Though 47.3% of the respondents believed that lowering salt in meal is very important and 77.9% of them believed that excess salt or salty sauce can cause health problems. Salt intake behavior is poor in patients with type 2 diabetes even having regular contacts with doctors and other health professionals. Appropriate measures can be taken to increase awareness, change their attitude and behavior regarding salt consumption.

Batu Dam is of considerable importance to the metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, its existence and the quality assessment of its waters being essential in helping to maintain the lives of a large sector of the Malaysian population. Concerning the level of naturally occurring radioactivity contained within its waters, a well characterised HPGe γ-ray technique has been used in making measurements of the concentrations of primordial radionuclides in samples of surface water from the Dam. Based on the mean individual daily consumption of dam water, estimation has been made of the concomitant radiation dose. Activity concentrations, in units of Bq l-1, have been found to be in the range 2.4-3.2 for 226Ra, 1.1-1.3 for 232Th and 22.7-40.7 for 40K, in line with literature data for surface waters. The total annual ingestion dose for infants (<1 y) and adolescents (12-17 y) are found to be significant and greater than the World Health Organization recommended maximum dose of 0.1 mSv y-1 from the imbibing of drinking water. However, the Dam water does not pose a threat to public health, the Dam water not being used as the sole source of drinking water. Noting that this is the only known study of water from Batu Dam, the reported levels allow for evaluation of future changes in the natural radioactivity profile.

This cross sectional descriptive study was performed on 70 postmortem vermiform appendices (male 34 and female 36) to find out the various positions of vermiform appendix of Bangladeshi people. The specimens were collected from autopsy laboratory of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh by purposive sampling technique from October 2016 to March 2017. The collected samples were divided into four age groups. They were Group A (upto 20 years), Group B (21 to 40 years), Group C (41 to 60 years) and Group D (above 60 years). Dissection was performed according to standard autopsy technique. During postmortem examination abdominal cavity was routinely exposed by classical midline incision from xiphoid process to the symphysis pubis and a semicircular incision around the umbilicus and the flaps were reflected to give a good view of the abdominal cavity along with its contents and then the taeniae coli of the caecum were identified. The three taeniae coli of the caecum converge at the base of the appendix and become its longitudinal muscle coat. The anterior caecal taeniae coli acts as the best guide for identification of the vermiform appendix. The relation of the base of the appendix to the caecum is constant but the position of the vermiform appendix, which is variable, was studied in relation to caecum and the terminal part of the ileum. Accordingly the position of the vermiform appendix was noted either retrocaecal, pelvic, preileal or postileal, subcaecal. All data were recorded in the predesigned data sheet, analyzed by SPSS program (version 21, 2012) and compared with the findings of other national and international studies and standard text books. Among 70 specimens, 44(62.9%) vermiform appendices were retrocaecal in position. The next common position was pelvic which was in 22(31.4%) specimen followed by postileal in 3(4.3%) specimen and subcaecal was observed only in 1(1.4%) specimen. In this study in all age groups incidence of retrocaecal vermiform appendix was highest and it was about 67.6%, 50%, 69.2% and 72.7% in Group A, B, C, D respectively. Pelvic position was 7.1%, 46.9%, 23.1% and 27.3% in Group A, B, C, D respectively. Subcaecal vermiform appendix was absent in Group A, B and Group D. On the other hand postileal vermiform appendix was absent in Group C and Group D. The findings of this study may help the physician and the surgeons for proper diagnosis, management and treatment of disease of vermiform appendix.

Beta thalassaemia trait is one of the most common forms of thalassaemia in Bangladesh. This clinical entity usually remains undiagnosed because they present with mild anaemia or sometimes no anaemia. Determination of trait is the mainstay of prevention of thalassaemia. RBC indices can provide valuable diagnostic tool for beta thalassaemia trait. This was a hospital based cross-sectional, analytical study, done at Department of Paediatrics, Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Rangpur, Bangladesh from July 2014 to June 2016. A total of 150 anaemic children, aged 1-15 years from inpatient and outpatient department were included by purposive sampling. Blood samples were collected and sent to the Department of Biochemistry, Rangpur Medical College to determine the value of RBC indices. Out of 150 anaemic children 37(24.66%) children were diagnosed as E-trait, 9(9%) E-disease 6(4%) as E-Beta thalassaemia, 1(0.66%) had error in the report, a total of 53 children were excluded from the study. Finally, 32(21.3%) children, diagnosed as beta thalassaemia trait and 65(43.33%) children, diagnosed as normal Hb variant, so a total of 97 children were enrolled in this study. Age of the children was 1-15 years. Their mean age was 6.4 years. Male female ratio was 1.15:1. There was significant difference of HbA2 between BTT and non BTT group of participants (p value <0.001). Value of MCV and MCH were significantly greater in BTT than non BTT group (p value <0.05). Sensitivity, Specificity, Positive predictive value, Negative predictive value and Youden index of MCV were 81.25%, 90.76%, 81%, 90% and 71 respectively. Sensitivity, Specificity, Positive predictive value, Negative predictive value and Youden index of MCH were 84.37%, 92.30%, 84%, 92% and 76 respectively.

It is evident that date fruits provide a wide variety of essential nutrients which impart potential human health benefits. In Bangladesh, the popularity of date and its consumption surge few-fold during Ramadan among Muslims owing to the profound emotion related to religious belief that breaking of dawn-to-dusk fasting with dates is fulfilling a Sunnah. The present study aimed to explore the microbiological quality of the five most popular fresh date samples (Nagal, Dhapas, Boroi, Morium, and Tunisia) purchased from different locations of Dhaka City, Bangladesh. Among 25 samples tested, 23 were observed to carry 3.30-5.65 Log CFU/gm aerobic bacteria and 3.30-5.36 Log CFU/gm yeasts and molds population. Coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli were not found in any of the samples analyzed in this study. However, except Nagal and Boroi from Mohammadpur and Mirpur, respectively, none of the samples were found safe to consume according to the microbiological grade recommended by Woolworths Quality Assurance Standard (WQAS), 2009, as fresh dates with microbial load can cause food poisoning or even foodborne intoxication. Date samples with less or no processing is responsible for this contamination which can be subsided and eliminated by appropriate handling and hygiene practices during postharvest processing.

The prognostic value of admission troponin I (tnI) levels and the resolution of the ST-segment elevation in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is well established. However, the combination of these two early available markers for predicting the risk of early mortality has not been evaluated yet. This prospective analytical study conducted in the department of Cardiology, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, Dhaka and NICVD, Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 2004 to February 2005. We have evaluated 80 patients with streptokinase treated STEMI who had both admission troponin I and ST-monitoring. We used a prospectively defined cut-off value of troponin I of 0.1ng/ml. For ST-segment resolution, a cut-off of 50% measured after 90 minutes was used. Both a troponin I >0.1ng/ml and ST segment resolution <50% was related to higher early mortality; 16.7% vs. 14.3% (p<0.001) and 57.1% vs. 1.7% (p<0.001) respectively. In a multivariate analysis ST-segment resolution was and troponin I showed a strong trend to be independently related to early mortality. The combination of both further improved risk stratification. The early mortality in the group with elevation of troponin I and without ST-segment resolution compared to the group without troponin I elevation and with ST-segment resolution was 55.6% vs. 0%. Both troponin I on admission and ST-segment resolution after 90 minutes are strong predictors of early mortality. The combination of both gives additive early information about prognosis and further improves risk stratification.

Ilizarov method is the best weapon for the treatment of the limb length discrepancy, especially in traumatic or congenital shortening of long bones. Post burn bony defect can be corrected by osteosynthesis. Here we treated a 7 years old boy, suffering from 33% electric burn affecting face, trunk, left upper limb & both lower limbs with loss of soft tissue of medial side of right leg along with dead and exposed of some segment (about 14cm) of Left tibia . Initially the patient was managed by plastic surgeons in the form of surgical toileting, wound debridement and wound coverage by split thickness skin graft. After about 6 weeks, we applied Ilizarov fixator on the affected limb and maintained it for 7 days to increase vascularity. As there was minimum bone in the proximal part, we did corticotomy at the distal end. After 7 days further, we started distal to proximal bone transport at a rate of 1mm per day. Staged excision of about 2.5 to 3cm dead bone was done, after transporting the same length of bone each time. In 5 such sittings, a total of 14cm bone was excised. Thus the burned portion was replaced by new bone; bony union was achieved after applying compression. Now the patient is able to walk individually, without any difficulty. So, we found that, Ilizarov method is a good option for the management of post burn bone loss. To our knowledge, such an application of the Ilizarov external fixation device in post burn bone loss has yet to be reported.

Solid-state nanopores are promising candidates for next generation DNA and protein sequencing. However, once fabricated, such devices lack tuneability, which greatly restricts their biosensing capabilities. Here we propose a new class of solid-state graphene-based nanopore devices that exhibit a unique capability of self-tuneability, which is used to control their conductance, tuning it to levels comparable to the changes caused by the translocation of a single biomolecule, and hence, enabling high detection sensitivities. Our presented quantum simulation results suggest that the smallest amino acid, glycine, when present in water and in an aqueous saline solution can be detected with high sensitivity, up to a 90% change in conductance. Our results also suggest that passivating the device with nitrogen, making it an n-type device, greatly enhances its sensitivity, and makes it highly sensitive to not only the translocation of a single biomolecule, but more interestingly to intramolecular electrostatics within the biomolecule. Sensitive detection of the carboxyl group within the glycine molecule, which carries a charge equivalent to a single electron, is achieved with a conductance change that reaches as high as 99% when present in an aqueous saline solution. The presented findings suggest that tuneable graphene nanopores, with their capability of probing intramolecular electrostatics, could pave the way towards a new generation of single biomolecule detection devices.

Iranian livestock diversity is still largely unexplored, in spite of the interest in the populations historically reared in this country located near the Fertile Crescent, a major livestock domestication centre. In this investigation, the genetic diversity and differentiation of 10 Iranian indigenous fat-tailed sheep breeds were investigated using 18 microsatellite markers. Iranian breeds were found to host a high level of diversity. This conclusion is substantiated by the large number of alleles observed across loci (average 13.83, range 7-22) and by the high within-breed expected heterozygosity (average 0.75, range 0.72-0.76). Iranian sheep have a low level of genetic differentiation, as indicated by the analysis of molecular variance, which allocated a very small proportion (1.67%) of total variation to the between-population component, and by the small fixation index (FST  = 0.02). Both Bayesian clustering and principal coordinates analysis revealed the absence of a detectable genetic structure. Also, no isolation by distance was observed through comparison of genetic and geographical distances. In spite of high within-breed variation, signatures of inbreeding were detected by the FIS indices, which were positive in all and statistically significant in three breeds. Possible factors explaining the patterns observed, such as considerable gene flow and inbreeding probably due to anthropogenic activities in the light of population management and conservation programmes, are discussed.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a hepatic manifestation of insulin resistance and serum uric acid (SUA) levels seemed to be elevated during this disorder. There is a paucity of data regarding the association of SUA with NAFLD in prediabetes. In this context, the present study has been undertaken to investigate this association. Methods: In a cross-sectional analytical design, a total of 110 prediabetic subjects [M/F; 63/47, age in ranges, 45 (25-68)] were recruited in the study and divided into non NAFLD (n = 62) and NAFLD (n = 48) group after examined with ultrasonogram. Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated by homeostasis model assessment. Results: NAFLD subjects had significantly higher levels of SUA compared to non NAFLD subjects (6.10 ± 1.42 vs. 5.38 ± 1.14, p = 0.004). They also had significantly higher levels of HOMA-IR (2.4 ± 1.09 vs. 1.4 ± 0.45, p < 0.001). In binary logistic regression analysis, HbA1c (OR = 3.505, p = 0.002), SUA (OR = 1.514, p = 0.023) and HOMA-IR (OR = 1.478, p = 0.029) were found to be significant determinants of NAFLD after adjusting the effects of BMI and triglyceride (TG). In multiple linear regression analysis, SUA showed significant positive association with HOMA-IR (ß = 0.355, p = 0.027) and TG (ß = 0.325, p = 0.033) after adjusting the effects of BMI and HbA1c. Conclusions: Increased levels of serum uric acid are significantly associated with NAFLD and this association seemed to be mediated by insulin resistance among prediabetic subjects.

A metamaterial-embedded planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is proposed in this study for cellular phone applications. A dual-band PIFA is designed to operate both GSM 900 MHz and DCS 1800 MHz. The ground plane of a conventional PIFA is modified using a planar one-dimensional metamaterial array. The investigation is performed using the Finite Integration Technique (FIT) of CST Microwave Studio. The performance of the developed antenna was measured in an anechoic chamber. The specific absorption rate (SAR) values are calculated considering two different holding positions: cheek and tilt. The SAR values are measured using COMOSAR measurement system. Good agreement is observed between the simulated and measured data. The results indicate that the proposed metamaterial-embedded antenna produces significantly lower SAR in the human head compared to the conventional PIFA. Moreover, the modified antenna substrate leads to slight improvement of the antenna performances.
