BACKGROUND: Evidence on the genetics of functional seizures is scarce, and the purpose of the current scoping systematic review is to examine the existing evidence and propose how to advance the field. METHODS: Web of science and MEDLINE were searched, from their initiation until May 2023. The following key words were used: functional neurological disorder(s), psychogenic neurological disorder(s), functional movement disorder(s), psychogenic movement disorder(s), functional seizures(s), psychogenic seizure(s), nonepileptic seizure(s), dissociative seizure(s), or psychogenic nonepileptic seizure(s), AND, gene, genetic(s), polymorphism, genome, epigenetics, copy number variant, copy number variation(s), whole exome sequencing, or next-generation sequencing. RESULTS: We identified three original studies. In one study, the authors observed that six (5.9%) patients with functional seizures carried pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants. In another study, the authors observed that, in functional seizures, there was a significant correlation with genes that are over-represented in adrenergic, serotonergic, oxytocin, opioid, and GABA receptor signaling pathways. In the third study, the authors observed that patients with functional seizures, as well as patients with depression, had significantly different genotypes in FKBP5 single nucleotide polymorphisms compared with controls. CONCLUSION: Future genetic investigations of patients with functional seizures would increase our understanding of the pathophysiological and neurobiological problems underlying this common neuropsychological stress-associated condition.

BACKGROUND: To prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, in vitro maturation (IVM) allows the oocytes for infertility treatment without hormone therapy. Although many oocytes matured during IVM, some deficiencies in the culture conditions lead to inhibition of the growth and development of the cumulus cells and the oocyte nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation. OBJECTIVES: The challenge of improving the oocyte culture conditions prompted us to use greater omentum (GOM), full of growth factors and proteins, as a rich supplement to the base culture medium. METHODS: Cumulus-oocyte complexes were recovered from rabbits and divided into 3D and 2D conditions cultured for 12 and 24 h. In 3D cultures, the oocytes embedded in alginate containing FBS decellularized GOM. Corresponding supplements were also added in 2D conditions-maturation of the oocytes evaluated by Aceto-Orcein, TEM, and RT-PCR for MAP2K1 and Cdk2. RESULTS: DNA quantification, Hoechst, and H&E staining confirmed cell depletion from GOM, and SEM showed the preservation of ultra-architecture after decellularization. Histochemical staining methods showed appropriate extracellular matrix preservation. ELISA assessment showed retention of VEGF content. MTT assessment indicated decellularized GOM was non-toxic. Both Aceto-Orcein assessment and ultra-structure study of the oocytes showed that supplementation of 2D or 3D cultures with decellularized omentum promoted oocyte maturation. Expression of MAP2K1 and Cdk2 also increased in the presence of GOM. CONCLUSIONS: GOM supplementation has a beneficial impact on oocyte maturation, probably due to the presence of growth factors and proteins.

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used chemical with toxic effects on the liver. Resveratrol (RES) is an herbal compound with protective properties. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of RES on the liver in rats exposed to BPA. Methods: This study was conducted in 2018 in Shiraz, Iran. Thirty Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into five groups: a control group (distilled water), a sham group (olive oil as a BPA solvent), a BPA group (50 mg/kg), an RES group (100 mg/kg), and a RES+BPA group (50 mg/kg+100 mg/kg). Olive oil, BPA, and RES were administered to the animals via gavage for eight weeks. After eight weeks, the animals' livers were removed, and stereological measurements were made to obtain the total liver volume, portal triad volumes, hepatocyte nucleus and cytoplasm volumes, hepatocyte numbers, sinusoidal space volumes and lengths, and Kupffer cell (KC) numbers. The data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance test. Results: The hepatocyte number, the total liver volume, and hepatocyte nucleus and cytoplasm volumes in the BPA group decreased by 41% (P<0.001), 18% (P<0.001), 32% (P=0.030), and 37% (P=0.014), respectively. The number of KCs and the length of sinusoids in the BPA group were increased compared with all the other groups (P<0.001). Our histological study revealed vacuolization, sinusoidal space dilatation, and congestion in the BPA group. Conclusion: In this study, the RES group, compared with the BPA group, exhibited a decrease in the total volume and length of sinusoids and the number of KCs. Additionally, the RES group showed an increase in the total liver volume, hepatocyte nucleus and cytoplasm volumes, portal triad volumes, and hepatocyte numbers after oral administration.
