RESUMEN

This case report describes the findings in a seven-month-old heifer with diabetes insipidus attributable to internal hydrocephalus. The heifer was referred to the clinic because of reduced appetite, polydipsia, decreased faecal output and weight loss. The heifer was examined daily for 8 days. She was thin and weak and had a dull dry hair coat and decreased appetite. The heifer urinated frequently; the urine was clear and yel low, had a specific gravity of 1.015. A complete blood cell count, biochemical profile and blood gas analysis revealed increased serum urea, increased serum creatinine, hypernatraemia, hyperchloraemia, hypercalcaemia and hypophosphataemia. The heifer received 10 litres of water and 3 litres of ruminal fluid from a healthy cow per os daily for 5 days. The heifer had access to fresh water ad libitum. The general condition of the heifer did not improve after this treatment. Although the concentration of serum urea and creatinine decreased, the concentrations of sodium, chloride and calcium remained higher than normal. Based on the findings, a diagnosis of diabetes insipidus was made and the heifer was euthanatized. Postmortem examination revealed severe internal hydrocephalus, and a definitive diagnosis of central diabetes insipidus attributable to internal hydrocephalus was made.

RESUMEN

Seventeen cows with right displacement of the abomasum (rda) without abomasal volvulus, nine cows with abomasal volvulus and 10 clinically healthy cows were examined ultrasonographically. A 5.0 MHz transducer was used to scan the eighth to 12th intercostal spaces and the cranial and caudal aspects of the flank on the right side. The position, size and dorsal and ventral margins of the abomasum were determined at each imaging position. In both groups of diseased cows, the ventral abomasum contained fluid ingesta, which appeared hypoechogenic with diffuse echogenic stippling. The abomasal folds could be seen clearly as echogenic sickle-shaped structures within the ingesta. The dorsal abomasal gas cap varied in size and was characterised by reverberation artefacts, which appeared as echogenic lines running parallel to the body surface. Compared with the healthy cows, the abomasum was larger and located significantly closer to the midline of the dorsum in both groups of cows. Compared with the cows with rda, the abomasum in the cows with abomasal volvulus was significantly smaller in the eighth intercostal space and significantly larger in the 11th intercostal space. It was not possible to differentiate between rda and abomasal volvulus on the basis of the ultrasonographic findings.

RESUMEN

The goal of the present paper was to establish criteria for the differentiation of thymic lymphoma and haematoma of the ventral neck in cattle. Four cattle with thymic lymphoma and seven with haematoma of the ventral neck underwent physical, haematological, biochemical and ultrasonographic examinations as well as histological evaluation of a biopsy specimen. All of the animals had firm non-painful swellings, which were no warmer than normal and extended from the pharyngeal region to the thoracic inlet. A diagnosis could not be established based on the results of physical examination and palpation of the swellings. Animals with a haematoma had a shorter history of being ill compared to those with thymic lymphoma. In patients with a haematoma, anaemia was present, the heart rate was elevated and the haematocrit was decreased, but not in cattle with thymic lymphoma. A tentative diagnosis was made on the basis of a macroscopic evaluation of the biopsy samples, which were dark red and firm in cattle with a haematoma. All cases of malignant thymic lymphoma were confirmed by histological examination of a biopsy sample. Ultrasonography did not help to differentiate between haematoma and thymic lymphoma. All animals with thymic lymphoma and three of those with a haematoma were euthanased. The four remaining animals with a haematoma were treated successfully.

RESUMEN

This case report describes the diagnostic trial of an inspiratory wheeze in a 1.5-year-old Swiss Alpine goat. Left grade 4 laryngeal hemiplegia was diagnosed via laryngoscopy, whereas the severity of the hemiplegia was assessed according to the grading system used in horses. The results of clinical, radiographic, sonographic and endoscopic examinations as well as haematological, biochemical and serological analyses did not reveal the cause of the hemiplegia. Treatment with an antibiotic and vitamin B complex resulted in only slight improvement. A postmortem examination four months later revealed no gross lesions in the left laryngeal nerve, larynx and intrinsic laryngeal musculature. Histological examination of the nerve, arytenoid cartilage and intrinsic laryngeal musculature also showed no lesions. Therefore, the cause of the disease in this goat is suspected to be on the cellular or molecular level of the intrinsic laryngeal musculature.

RESUMEN

Limb buds of 11-day-old mouse embryos were cultured. On day 5, 0.1 mM colchicine was added for 3, 6, 12 or 24 h in vitro. 3 or 6 h after application of colchicine, electron-dense granula appear to an increasing extent. These granula can be interpreted as collagen-containing secretion granula and as an indication of a secretion inhibition. The peripheral localization of the granula groups speaks for an effect on the actual discharge of the secretion after having passed the Golgi apparatus. Additional effects of colchicine are fragmentation of the Golgi apparatus and an increased occurrence of bundles of fine filaments. Since only few microtubuli occur in the periphery of the chondroblasts and recent studies indicate an influence of colchicine not only on the microtubule system, a site of action at the functional unity 'cell membrane-microfilaments' is discussed. 12 or 24 h after colchicine application, the contents of the congested secretion granula change. The occurrence of cross-striated structures indicates an activity of procollagen peptidase in the granula in the case of secretion inhibition. In addition, cytolysosomes (autophagic vacuoles) develop. The occurrence of polymorphism of the granula contents under these conditions is attributed to an effect of lysosomal enzymes.
