RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the association of different obesity measurement indexes on serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in Chinese adult women. Methods: The data were obtained from baseline and follow-up surveys of the urban Breast Cancer Screening Program in Shuangliu District, Chengdu. A total of 441 adult women were included in the study. A questionnaire survey, physical examination, and laboratory testing were conducted on the subjects. Multivariate logistic regression model, two-level mixed effects logistic regression model, and restricted cubic spline method were used to investigate the linear and nonlinear correlation between different obesity measurement indexes and serum CRP in adult women. Results: For every 1 unit increase in BMI, waist circumference (WC), and adiposity, the risk of elevated serum CRP or exacerbation of chronic low-grade inflammation in adult women increased by 16.5%, 5.0%, and 11.1% (P<0.05), respectively. Both BMI and adiposity were nonlinear correlated with serum CRP. Using BMI=24.0 kg/m2 as the reference point, serum CRP level increased with the increase of BMI when BMI >24.0 kg/m2. Using adiposity=30% as the reference point, serum CRP level increased with the increase of adiposity when adiposity >30%. Conclusions: Overall, obesity reflected by BMI had the strongest association with serum CRP in adult women, followed by body fat content reflected by adiposity, and central obesity reflected by WC had the weakest association with CRP. Adult women with BMI >24.0 kg/m2 or adiposity >30% are at high risk for obesity-related inflammatory manifestations.

RESUMEN

Hexane is a widely used organic solvent in industry, and chronic hexane poisoning is the main occupational toxic lesion in China. In particular, axonal and myelin lesions in the distal thick fibers of the peripheral nervous system may be caused by 2, 5-hexanedione (2, 5-HD), an intermediate metabolite of n-hexane in humans. Hexane has toxic effects not only on the nervous system but also on the liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs. In this paper, we review the progress of research on the mechanism of n-hexane toxic neuropathy.

RESUMEN

Objective: To compare the ophthalmic examination indices of different occupational groups in Shenzhen and analyze the possible health problems, so as to provide research basis for further health intervention. Methods: In March 2021, 5426 professionals with ophthalmic examination index data were selected from the basic health database of "Shenzhen occupational population protection action". Among them, radiation workers (694), port operators (1756), sanitation workers (946), teachers (224), video workers (154), police (927) and firefighters (100) were selected as the investigated occupational population. They were exposed to noise 625 workers with traditional occupational hazards such as noise, chemical poisons and dust were used as the control population.Ophthalmic examination indices included right eye vision, left eye vision, outer eye, conjunctiva, cornea, lens, and fundus oculi. The differences of each index in different occupational groups were compared. Results: Compared with the control group, the port operator group showed lower abnormal rates of binocular vision and fundus oculi (P<0.05), but higher abnormal rates of conjunctiva (P=0.029), the environmental sanitation worker group showed higher abnormal rates of binocular vision and conjunctiva (all P<0.01), the teacher group had higher abnormal rates of binocular vision, but only the difference of left eye vision was statistically significant (P=0.021), and the video worker group had higher abnormal rates of right and left eyes vision (P=0.029、0.006) . Conclusion: There were some degrees of ophthalmic problems in different occupational population, therefore targeted intervention measures should be taken according to the characteristics of each group.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have suggested that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in various tumors. The present research was designed to examine the prognostic values of a newly identified lncRNA, lncRNA LEF1-AS1 (LEF1-AS1), in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The relative levels of LEF1-AS1 in ESCC tissues and normal esophageal tissues were examined by applying quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR). The relations between LEF1-AS1 expressions and clinical factors were analyzed by conducting the Chi-square test. The Kaplan-Meier assay was used for assays of the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) dates. Univariate and multivariate analyses were applied for the identification of the independent prognostic factors for ESCC. RESULTS: We showed that LEF1-AS1 was distinctly upregulated in ESCC tissues compared with the matched normal tissues (p < 0.01). Higher levels of LEF1-AS1 were associated with lymph nodes metastasis (p = 0.009) and clinical stage (p = 0.008). Clinical investigation revealed that ESCC patients with high LEF1-AS1 level showed a significant shorter 5-year OS (p = 0.0028) and DFS (p = 0.0025). Multivariate analyses confirmed LEF1-AS1 as an independent prognostic parameter indicating unfavorable clinical prognosis for ESCC patients. CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggested that LEF1-AS1 could be a novel ESCC-related lncRNA involved in the clinical progression of ESCC, which may be used as a potential predictor.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of DUXAP10 in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and its underlying mechanism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We detected DUXAP10 expression in 82 CML patients, 12 normal controls, and CML cell line by qRT-PCR (quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction). After transfection of si-DUXAP10 or si-PTEN in CML cell lines (K652, KG-1), we detected proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis by CCK-8 (cell counting kit-8), colony formation assay, and flow cytometry, respectively. Finally, protein expressions of p21, CDK2, Bcl-2, Bax, and PTEN were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: DUXAP10 was upregulated in CML tissues and cells, which was gradually increased in the chronic phase (CP), acceleration phase (AP), and blast phase (BP) of CML. Knockdown of DUXAP10 in K652 and KG-1 cells can remarkably inhibit cell proliferation, promote cycle arrest and apoptosis. Western blot and flow cytometry results demonstrated that DUXAP10 can reduce apoptosis by inhibiting PTEN expression. CONCLUSIONS: Overexpressed DUXAP10 accelerates the development and progression of CML by promoting cell proliferation, reducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via inhibiting PTEN expression.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential effect of miR-363 on the development of laryngeal cancer and to reveal the relevant mechanism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The expression level of miR-363 was detected in laryngeal cancer tissues and cells (TU-177), respectively. Luciferase assay was performed to evaluate the interaction between miR-363 and myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1). The effect of the miR-363/Mcl-1 axis on TU-177 cells was determined by subsequent experiments including cell proliferation, invasion, apoptosis and the expression level of Mcl-1. RESULTS: In the present study, we found that miR-363 was both repressed in laryngeal cancer tissues and cells (TU-177). To find the regulating target of miR-363, we searched three publicly available algorithms, including TargetScan, miRDB, and microRNA. Results showed that Mcl-1 was a direct target of miR-363, and the Luciferase assay confirmed our suggestion. Subsequent experiments indicated that the decreased expression of Mcl-1 resulting from the up-regulation of miR-363 could deaccelerate cell proliferation and invasion, and accelerate cell apoptosis in laryngeal cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our research revealed the suppressed function of miR-363 in laryngeal cancer by targeting Mcl-1. Meanwhile, we found that the restoration of miR-363 could serve as a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of laryngeal cancer.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS)in 259 professional automobile drivers, and to put forward targeted suggestions on protection. METHODS: In October 2014, 114 male bus drivers and 145 male taxi drivers in a transportation service company were enrolled as investigation group, and 121 non-operating male staff were enrolled as control group. Physical examination and a questionnaire survey were conducted for both groups, and the results were analyzed. RESULTS: The bus drivers and taxi drivers had significantly higher prevalence rates of MS than the nonoperating staff(17.5%/13.1% vs 3.3%, P<0.05). The results of univariate logistic analysis showed that smoking(OR=2.58, 95%CI 1.14~5.88), exercise (OR=0.21, 95% CI 0.10~0.43), meal time (OR=0.27, 95% CI 0.13~0.59), and a family history of chronic diseases (OR=2.26, 95% CI 1.13~4.50)were associated with MS, and each independent variable showed significant differences between groups (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that with age remaining the same, smoking was the risk factor for MS in professional automobile drivers (OR=5.25, 95%CI 2.00~13.80), and meal time (20~40 min)(OR= 0.20, 95%CI 0.09~0.44)and exercise (OR=0.13, 95% CI 0.06~0.30)were protective factors against MS. CONCLUSION: Professional automobile drivers have a higher prevalence rate of MS than non-operating staff, which should be taken seriously by working personnel.
