Shellfish sanitary controls are very important to guarantee consumer health because bivalve molluscs (BVM) are filter-feeders so they can accumulate pathogens, environmental contaminants and biotoxins produced by some algae, causing infections and food poisoning in humans after ingestion. The purpose of this work was to analyse with chemometric methods the historical data relating to routine analyses carried out by the competent authority (Liguria Local Health Unit, National Health Service) on the BVM reared in a shellfish farm located in the Gulf of La Spezia (Italy). Chemometric analysis was aimed at identifying any correlations between the variables, as well as any seasonal trends and similarities between the stations, in order to be able to provide further material for a more accurate risk assessment and to improve the monitoring organization for example by reducing sampling stations and/or sampling frequency. The dataset used included 31 variables classified as biotoxicological, microbiological and chemical variables, measured twice a week, monthly or half yearly respectively, for a total of 6 years (from 2015 to 2021), on samples of Mytilus galloprovincialis coming from 7 monitoring stations. The results obtained by the application of principal component analysis have shown positive alga-biotoxin correlations, as well as seasonal trends linked to algae growth, with a greater algal biomass and their toxins during the spring months. In addition, periods characterised by low rainfall were found to affect algal development, promoting especially species such as Dinophysis spp. Considering the microbiological and biotoxicological variables, significant differences between the monitoring stations were not found. However, stations could be distinguished on the basis of the nature of the predominant chemical pollutants.

The present contribution aims to enhance solar cells' performance via the development of advanced luminescent down-shifting based on encapsulated nanostructured perovskite materials. Here, thin films of inorganic lead halide (CsPbBr3) perovskite nanocrystal luminophores were synthetized, by hot-injection, deposited on glass substrates by spin-coating, and encapsulated with parylene type C, via chemical vapor deposition, to protect and stabilize the films. The optical properties of these thin films were characterized by absorption, emission and 2D contour spectra, their structure by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the morphology by Scanning Transmission Electron microscopy. I-V curve and spectral response nanocrystalline silicon photovoltaic (nc-Si:H PV) cells were studied in the absence and presence of the perovskite and parylene luminescent down-shifting layers. The incorporation of the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals and their encapsulation with the parylene type C polymeric coating led to an increase in the current generated and the spectral response of the PV cells in the regime of the nanocrystals' fluorescence emission. A 3.1% increase in the short circuit current density and a 5.6% increase in the power conversion efficiency were observed.

Resumen En este estudio se evaluó la actividad antimicrobiana in vitro de extractos de Xenophyllum poposum sobre microorganismos bucales como Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Lactobacillus casei, Actinomyces naeslundii, Actinomyces odontolyticus, Candida albicans y Veillonella sp. Se empleó el método de difusión radial en agar y como controles negativo y positivo de inhibición se emplearon etanol y clorhexidina al 0,12% (Plac out NF®) respectivamente. Los extractos con mayor actividad antimicrobiana fueron el etanólico y el clorofórmico. La diferencia entre ambos no fue estadísticamente significativa (p≥0,05). Tampoco se observó diferencia significativa con respecto a la clorhexidina, excepto sobre Veillonella sp., ya que el extracto etanólico presentó halos de inhibición significativamente menores sobre este microorganismo. Esto es importante ya que Veillonella se considera indicador de salud en relación a la caries dental. En base a esto, el extracto etanólico de Xenophyllum poposum podría ser usado como control químico de la biopelícula dental.


Abstract In this study, the in vitro antimicrobial activity of Xenophyllum poposum extracts on oral microorganisms such as Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Lactobacillus casei, Actinomyces naeslundii, Actinomyces odontolyticus, Candida albicans, Veillonella sp. was evaluated. The radial diffusion method in agar was used and 0.12% ethanol and chlorhexidine (Plac out NF®) were used as negative and positive inhibition controls, respectively. The extracts with the highest antimicrobial activity were the ethanolic and chloroform extracts. The difference between the two was not statistically significant (p≥0.05). No significant difference was observed with respect to chlorhexidine, except on Veillonella sp., since the ethanolic extract presented significantly lower inhibition halos on this microorganism. This is important as Veillonella is considered an indicator of health in relation to dental caries. Based on this, the ethanolic extract of Xenophyllum poposum could be used as chemical control of dental biofilm.

Com base nisso, o extrato etanólico de Xenophyllum poposum pode ser utilizado como controle químico do biofilme dental.

This work further explores the possibilities for designing the high-temperature electrical performance of the thermoelectric Ca3Co4O9 phase, by a composite approach involving separate metallic iron and nickel particles additions, and by employing two different sintering schemes, capable to promote the controlled interactions between the components, encouraged by our recent promising results obtained for similar cobalt additions. Iron and nickel were chosen because of their similarities with cobalt. The maximum power factor value of around 200 µWm-1K-2 at 925 K was achieved for the composite with the nominal nickel content of 3% vol., processed via the two-step sintering cycle, which provides the highest densification from this work. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was shown to be strongly dependent on the processing conditions and added amounts of metallic particles. Although the conventional one-step approach results in Fe- and Ni-containing composites with the major content of the thermoelectric Ca3Co4O9 phase, their electrical performance was found to be significantly lower than for the Co-containing analogue, due to the presence of less-conducting phases and excessive porosity. In contrast, the relatively high performance of the composite with a nominal nickel content of 3% vol. processed via a two-step approach is related to the specific microstructural features from this sample, including minimal porosity and the presence of the Ca2Co2O5 phase, which partially compensate the complete decomposition of the Ca3Co4O9 matrix. The obtained results demonstrate different pathways to tailor the phase composition of Ca3Co4O9-based materials, with a corresponding impact on the thermoelectric performance, and highlight the necessity of more controllable approaches for the phase composition tuning, including lower amounts and different morphologies of the dispersed metallic phases.

Graphene nanocomposites are emerging carbon-based materials with interesting electrical, mechanical, optical and magnetic properties, relevant for applications in different fields. Despite this increased use, the impact of graphene nanocomposites residues in the environment has not been properly studied. Thus, the goal of this work was to assess the toxicity of two nickel/graphene nanocomposites (G/Ni1 and G/Ni2) differing in size and shape to Danio rerio embryos. Their toxicity was evaluated using apical (mortality, development and hatching), biochemical [cholinesterase (ChE), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and catalase (CAT) activities] and behavioral (locomotor activity) endpoints. At the tested concentrations, neither of the nanocomposites presented lethal or developmental effects. Nevertheless, both nanocomposites induced behavioral effects, reducing swimming distances. This effect was, however detected at lower concentrations in the G/Ni1 nanocomposite. At biochemical level, only G/Ni1 nanocomposite showed to interfere with the measured parameters, increasing the activities of ChE, CAT and GST. Differences in the effects induced by the two nanocomposites seem to be related not only with their size, but also with the shape and the ability to continuously release nickel ions to aqueous medium. This work highlights the importance of studying graphene nanocomposites effects to aquatic organisms even when acute toxicity is not expected. The relevance of the effects found in this work need to be further analyzed in light of the consequences to the long-term fitness of the organisms and in light of the environmental concentrations expected for this type of compounds.

Water contamination with antibiotics is a serious environmental threat. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is one of the most frequently detected antibiotics in water. Herein, silica-based magnetic nanosorbents prepared using three seaweed polysaccharides, alginic acid, κ- and λ-carrageenan, were developed and evaluated in the uptake of ciprofloxacin. The sorbents were firstly characterized in detail to assess their morphology and composition. A systematic investigation was conducted to study the adsorption performance towards CIP, by varying the initial pH, contact time and initial CIP concentration. The maximum adsorption capacity was 464, 423 and 1350 mg/g for particles prepared from alginic acid, κ- and λ-carrageenan respectively. These high values indicate that these materials are among the most effective sorbents reported so far for the removal of CIP from water. The kinetic data were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. The CIP adsorption on λ-carrageenan particles followed a cooperative process with sigmoidal isotherm that was described by the Dubinin-Radushkevich model. The high charge density of λ-carrageenan and the propensity of CIP molecules to self-aggregate may explain the cooperative nature of CIP adsorption. The sorbents were easily regenerated in mild conditions and could be reused in CIP removal up to 4 times without a significant loss of adsorptive properties.

BACKGROUND: The development of new noninvasive approaches for the diagnosis of human platelet antigen (HPA)-1 fetomaternal incompatibility has become of great interest. These approaches allow determination of whether the fetus is incompatible or not with the mother and a decision on antenatal therapy to avoid fetal or neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT). The objective of this work was to perform rapid, noninvasive prenatal test for HPA-1ab fetal antigen detection after the detection of an HPA-1-homozygous mother by using plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The HPA-1 genotypes of 142 pregnant women and 17 nonpregnant controls were retrospectively determined by high-resolution melting (HRM) polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Coamplification at lower denaturation temperature (COLD) HRM PCR was performed to determine the fetal genotype analyzing cfDNA from all HPA-1bb pregnant women. RESULTS: After the HRM analysis, the following genotypes were identified: HPA-1aa (71.13%), HPA-1bb (2.8%), and HPA-1ab (26.06%). Four HPA-1bb-homozygous pregnant women were carrying an incompatible fetus. Plasma samples from these mothers were analyzed by HRM COLD-PCR. Homozygous HPA-1bb pregnant women carrying an HPA-1ab-heterozygous fetus did not group with either the HPA-1ab or the HPA-1bb controls. Thus, COLD-PCR analysis allows the detection of HPA-1ab-heterozygous fetuses carried by homozygous mothers during first weeks of pregnancy. CONCLUSION: The fetal genotype from HPA-1bb-homozygous women was detected by a noninvasive prenatal test as soon as 12 weeks of gestation.

Nanographene oxide (nGO) has been recently proposed as a new antitumoral therapeutic agent, drug delivery carrier and gene transfection vehicle, among others. Treatment is carried out by hyperthermia induced by infrared irradiation. After treatment, the nanosystems will be inevitably excreted and released to the environment. To understand the potential impacts of pegylated nGO (nGO-PEG), three key species from different trophic levels were used: the green micro-algae Raphidocelis subcapitata (growth inhibition test), the cladocera Daphnia magna (acute and chronic tests), and the fish Danio rerio (fish embryo test). Besides a regular standard procedure to assess toxicity, and considering the mode of action of nGO-PEG in cancer treatment, a simultaneous infrared lamp exposure was carried out for D. magna and D. rerio. Additionally, and taking advantage of the phenotypic transparency of D. magna, nGO-PEG was fluorescently tagged to evaluate the potential uptake of nGO-PEG. The R. subcapitata growth inhibition test showed effects during the first 48 h, recovering till the end of the test (96 h). No acute or chronic effects were observed for D. magna, under standard or infrared light exposures although confocal microscope images showed nGO-PEG uptake. Very small percentages of mortality and abnormalities were observed in D. rerio exposed with and without the infrared lamp. Although low hazard may be expected for nGO-PEG in aquatic ecosystems, further studies with species with different life traits should be accomplished, in order to derive more accurate conclusions.

Graphene-based materials are elective materials for a number of technologies due to their unique properties. Also, semiconductor nanocrystals have been extensively explored due to their size-dependent properties that make them useful for several applications. By coupling both types of materials, new applications are envisaged that explore the synergistic properties in such hybrid nanostructures. This research reports a general wet chemistry method to prepare graphene oxide (GO) sheets decorated with nanophases of semiconductor metal sulfides. This method allows the in situ growth of metal sulfides onto GO by using metal dialkyldithiocarbamate complexes as single-molecule precursors. In particular, the role of GO as heterogeneous substrate for the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals was investigated by using Raman spectroscopic and imaging methods. The method was further extended to other graphene-based materials, which are easily prepared in a larger scale, such as exfoliated graphite oxide (EGO).

Amine-functionalized bridged silsesquioxanes (BSs) were synthesized from bis[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl] amine via a solvent-mediated route. BS-1 and BS-2 were obtained at neutral pH with sub- and stoichiometric amounts of water, respectively, and high tetrahydrofuran content. BS-3 was prepared with hyperstoichiometric water concentration, high tetrahydrofuran content, and hydrochloric acid. BS-4 was synthesized with hyperstoichiometric water concentration, high ethanol content, and sodium hydroxide. BS-1 and BS-2 were produced as transparent films, whereas BS-3 and BS-4 formed white powders. Face-to-face stacking of flat or folded lamellae yielded quasi-hydrophobic platelets with emission quantum yields of 0.05 ± 0.01 (BS-1 and BS-2) or superhydrophilic onion-like nanoparticles with exciting emission quantum yields of 0.38 ± 0.03 (BS-3) and 0.33 ± 0.04 (BS-4), respectively. The latter two values are the largest ever reported for amine-functionalized siloxane-based hybrids lacking aromatic groups. Fast Grotthus proton hopping between = [Formula: see text]/ = NH groups (BS-3) and = N-/ = NH groups (BS-4), promoted by H+ and OH- ions, respectively, and aided by short amine-amine contacts provided by the onion-like morphology, account for this unique optical behavior.

Fetal and Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) is a condition which could occur when pregnant women develop an alloimmunization against paternally inherited antigens of the fetal platelets. Approximately 80 % of FNAIT cases are caused by anti-HPA-1a, about 15 % by anti-HPA-5b and 5 % by other HPA antibodies. Only 2 % of the total population is HPA-1a negative (HPA-1b1b). The HPA-1a allele differs by one single nucleotide from HPA-1b allele, yet it represents around 27 % of total severe thrombocytopenias. HPA-1 was studied in serum cDNA from 12 volunteer pregnant women to determine their HPA-1 genotype by HRM (high resolution melting) PCR. When an homozygous HPA-1 gene was detected in a mother, a COLD HRM was performed to determine whether or not the fetal genotype differs from the mother's.The differences in the melting curve shapes allow us to accurately distinguish the three pregnants genotypes. The fetal heterozygous genotype of homozygous pregnant women was correctly detected by COLD PCR HRM in maternal serum. HPA-1 genotyping by HRM may be a useful aproach for genotyping all pregnant women in inexpensively. Moreover, when HPA-1 homozygosis was detected in a pregnant woman, fetal heterozygosis may be diagnosed by COLD HRM to select pregnancies for preventive monitoring.

Graphene nanoribbons (GNR) were generated in ethanol solution by unzipping pyrrolidine-functionalized carbon nanotubes under mild conditions. Evaporation of the solvent resulted in regular few-layer stacks of graphene nanoribbons observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction. The experimental interlayer distance (0.49-0.56 nm) was confirmed by computer modelling (0.51 nm). Computer modelling showed that the large interlayer spacing (compared with graphite) is due to the presence of the functional groups and depends on their concentration. Stacked nanoribbons were observed to redissolve upon solvent addition. This preparation method could allow the fine-tuning of the interlayer distances by controlling the number and/or the nature of the chemical groups in between the graphene layers.

The EPICOLON consortium was initiated in 1999 by the Gastrointestinal Oncology Group of the Spanish Gastroenterology Association. It recruited consecutive, unselected, population-based colorectal cancer (CRC) cases and control subjects matched by age and gender without personal or familial history of cancer all over Spain with the main goal of gaining knowledge in Lynch syndrome and familial CRC. This epidemiological, prospective and multicentre study collected extensive clinical data and biological samples from ∼2000 CRC cases and 2000 controls in Phases 1 and 2 involving 25 and 14 participating hospitals, respectively. Genetic susceptibility projects in EPICOLON have included candidate-gene approaches evaluating single-nucleotide polymorphisms/genes from the historical category (linked to CRC risk by previous studies), from human syntenic CRC susceptibility regions identified in mouse, from the CRC carcinogenesis-related pathways Wnt and BMP, from regions 9q22 and 3q22 with positive linkage in CRC families, and from the mucin gene family. This consortium has also participated actively in the identification 5 of the 16 common, low-penetrance CRC genetic variants identified so far by genome-wide association studies. Finishing their own pangenomic study and performing whole-exome sequencing in selected CRC samples are among EPICOLON future research prospects.

BACKGROUND: Aflatoxins are mycotoxins derived from foodstuffs colonized by fungal species of the genus Aspergillus; they are common food contaminants with immunosuppressive, mutagenic and carcinogenic activity. Aflatoxins are heat-resistant and are thus easily transmitted along the food chain. They are hepatotoxic and have the potential to induce hepatocellular carcinoma. Agri-food industry workers are thus at risk of ingestion as well as transmucosal absorption or inhalation of toxins released during product preparation or processing. OBJECTIVES: To measure the levels of airborne mycotoxins, particularly aflatoxins, in a laboratory analysing imported foodstuffs for mycotoxin contamination. METHODS: The protocol used to analyse a batch of shelled peanuts from Vietnam, especially the grinding phase, which is held to be at the highest risk ofgenerating airborne toxins, was assessed at the A.R.PA.L. laboratory (Liguria Region Environmental Protection Agency) of Genoa, Italy, which participates in a European aflatoxin monitoring project. RESULTS: Wet grinding was performed to avoid production of large amounts of dust. Comparison of airborne concentrations before and after grinding with legal thresholds disclosed that the analytical procedures involved negligible aflatoxin levels for operators (environmental burden 0.11 pg/ m3). CONCLUSIONS: Given the toxicity of aflatoxins, worker protection measures should be consistently adopted and enforced. Threshold limit values for working environments should be introduced besides the existing ones for public health.

RESUMEN

Three different types of photoluminescent hybrid materials containing trivalent lanthanide (Ln(3+) = Eu(3+), Tb(3+)) ions, chitosan, and silica have been prepared with different structural features. The different silica sources lead to diverse microstructures of hybrid materials, with silica being homogeneously dispersed in the chitosan materials (LnChS-H), or forming a core-shell morphology. Postsynthesis treatment is necessary for embedding the luminescent probe. The Ln(3+)-based materials have been investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy (12-300 K). The chitosan-Eu(3+)-related local environment is maintained in the EuChS-H hybrid material. The emission features of the core-shell materials are characterized by the presence of two Eu(3+) distinct local environments, one associated with the chitosan core and the other with the silica shell.
